| Wanted - R | How about a big ol' bag of "HELL FUCKING YES". This is EXACTLY what I expected from Timur Bekmambetov (The NIGHT-WATCH films). I crown him the new big official action BAD-ASS on the planet. Fuck all the dirty scabs like Ratner, Bay and their moronic little clones. Lets let the guys who have the juice and the balls to bring the HARDCORE back into action movies through the gates. It takes someone OUTSIDE of the brain-dead coffins of Hollywood to do something right. Sure, this movie is over-the-top, but I knew that going in. Its done icreativily and with intelligent film grammer that isn't happy with just recycling ripped off John Woo cliches. Yea, I don't buy that a bullet can be curved around a room, do a full 360 going through about 6 skulls either... but it sure played cool within it's own microcosm of "Super-Assasins". So just say YES to this return to style even if it comes from the other side of the world. | August 10, 2008 | N/A | |||
| Doomsday - R | At what point does homage become rip-off? How many sub-genre's can a single film cross and still be taken seriously? Sadly, this film feels like a moronic blast to the head as regurgitates Escape From New York and The Road Warrior.. of course mixing a little Excalibur/Gladiator doesnt hurt either right? Urghh.. I can't tell you how many times I rolled my eyes. The film's only saving grace is Rhona Mitra who I am totally convinced could play a female James Bond if anyone had the balls to attempt it. I've loved her since her days on THE PRACTICE/BOSTON LEGAL. She deserves better than this farce. If our future is that we are going to pick the dead bones of other films and claim it's homage than we are headed for dark days as film fans. I hope this isn't a trend. I can't image John Carpenter enjoys this retarded do-over of his work as well. | August 1, 2008 | N/A | |||
| Casshern - Unrated | At least in the category of a FULL green-screened film this is visually stunning, but beyond that it is a jumbled mess. I've heard there is a Director's Cut that adds a sizable chucnk of this film back in, but as it exists in this form it's a train wreck. I also really hated the METAL music score, it just didnt seem appropriate to the film. This is a "coulda been", but I do leave my final FINAL judgement for the Director's Cut edition. As for creating the ANIME/MANGA feel in live action this is very successful. | July 29, 2008 | N/A | |||
| Forgetting Sarah Marshall - R | Nothing profound here, but I had a few really huge laughs. A great "see it with your Wife/Girlfriend" type of flick. Russell Brand is outstanding and someone to watch in the future. Paul Rudd, once again, scores with a fantastic cameo/supporting role. Mila Kunis = gorgeous! I had a great time with this one. | July 29, 2008 | N/A | |||
| The Dark Knight - PG-13 | OUTSTANDING!! - I will discuss this in much greater detail on a Hollywood Saloon Specoial Edition dedicated completely to THE DARK KNIGHT. | July 23, 2008 | N/A | |||
| Batman Gotham Knight - Unrated | July 23, 2008 | N/A | ||||
| The Signal - R | WOW!! This is a unique, fresh and brave sci-fi/horror flick. It was like a zombie apocalypse but through the eyes of the zombies almost...fighting for their humanity, clinging to what , if anything, makes any sense. Considering the budget I am VERY impressed for what they pulled off. LOVED the 3 stories and the disjointed time line. You have to have some brains to get this one and thank God for that... for a damn change. | July 19, 2008 | N/A | |||
| Kissing Jessica Stein - R | July 19, 2008 | N/A | ||||
| Metropolis (Metoroporisu) - PG-13 | Yet another fantastic anime film and a "film" it is. An echo of the 1927 film, this takes place in a future where robots have become a threat to the mainstream populus. This has some common dystopic themes with other stories but is done in a fresh way. I continue to see how the Japaneese take their animated films seriously and attain to create profound art rather than just silly and vapid entertainment. | July 15, 2008 | N/A | |||
| Monster House - PG | July 15, 2008 | N/A | ||||
| The Love Guru - PG-13 | BAD, BAD, BAD...so why the hell was I laughing so much? See, really what we have here is a totally new form of comedic arts, a movie that really doesn't give a shit if it sucks, but only that you laugh. This, like the Austin Powers movies is chock full of zingers and one-liners that people will be qoting for years to come..BUT no one will ever admit to actually enjoying the film. I could see this having a strong life on Home Video moreso than in any theatrical run. I enjoy Mike Myers' humor as a long time SNL fan, so really that same "sketch" humor is here and works in short bursts. The movie as a whole experience is really painful, but really isn't it just being used as a vehicle for Myers to hit us with these small jabs of quicky jokes? So really I'm perplexed with this because there are some absolutely dreadful moments in this sad film..head slap NOT FUNNY fall on your face LAME jokes.. but then Myers redeems himself with a good one. Its up to you if there are more good than BAD jokes in this.. but more like a standup routine than anything else in the end it's really where your brand of humor lies that makes this thing enjoyable for you or not. | July 11, 2008 | N/A | |||
| Hancock - PG-13 |
ya knoooooooooow.....
I really enjoyed the first part of this. Things were setting up for something different, but then about half way through the movie turns a sharp corner and becomes almost an entirely different flick. The 2nd part should have almost been the sequel rather than squashed in to one movie. I enjoyed Smith and Bateman, but Theron seemed like she was playing under her talents. I would be interested to see if there will be a Director's Cut of this. I think this movie COULDA be good... but the script just gets messy and bloated. Its too bad. |

| Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (Wo hu cang long) - PG-13 | July 6, 2008 | N/A | ||||
| The Incredible Hulk - PG-13 | Suprise! Suprise! I actually really liked this a lot. Ed Norton was great (as he usually is). I enjoyed the supporting cast as well, even Liv Tyler. While some of the CGI isn't out and out belivable I was eventually able to enjoy the film for what is was. This felt much more like the Hulk I grew up with than the Ang Lee film, which I also liked, but I think works better with this film. Loved the homages back to the TV series, especially hearing the theme. Count another one for Marvel. Great Job. | June 25, 2008 | N/A | |||
| King Corn - Unrated | Interesting Documentary on how we mostly survive on the Corn in our diets and it's effects. This is good info. that people need to know about. The Doc. itself makes good points, but comes across as a little self indulgent and very "preachy"... but it's points are strong and worthy of dissemenation. | June 23, 2008 | N/A | |||
| The Happening - R | Absolutely over the top DUMB. I really HTAED this waste of time disaster joke. TREES can talk to the bushes can talk to the grass?? WTF? I guess if you BELIEVE that plants can think, communicate, plan and then release toxins then maybe you can buy into this silly idea, but not me. In the past I have supported M. Night when all others were kicking his ass. I really backed LADY IN THE WATER, but I just cannot spin this tale of stupid. Maybe it's just me, but I just couldnt buy into this in anyway. It only took about 5 minutes and I was completely BORED. Its 90 minute run time felt like an eternity and was a complete chore to get through. WTF was going on in M. Night's head? He is so far above this, so I thought. It's not even worth a curious look. Just a sad waste of time. Mark Walberg is just terrible in his role as a mousey High School Science Teacher. The whole movie felt mis-cast. Don't even get me started on the Hot Dog loving guy with all the planet theories. HEAD SLAP Moronic. | June 20, 2008 | N/A | |||
| Appleseed Saga: Ex Machina - Unrated | Absolutely Brilliant all the way around. Fantastic animation. KICK ASS action. This film had a more personal story than the previous film, but still with a huge worldwide scope to things. Great techno score. I saw some influences from other genre films (Star Wars, Star Trek) but I appreciated the tip of the hat and it felt more like an homage than a rip-off. I truly hope this story continues and I get a chance to see this story in some form on the big screen. More and more I find myself draw to foreign cinema. Films like this just simply do it better and smarter than the warmed over drivel we are getting stateside. This is a MUST for all action and sci-fi fans. I just LOVED it !! I'd love to know how deep John Woo's hand had in the quality of this anime film because it's the best thing he has been involved with in MANY years. | June 20, 2008 | N/A | |||
| Appurushîdo (Appleseed) - R | Simple brilliant Anime, across the board. Incredible eye-popping animation with a great HARD sci-fi story that most American audiences will never be able to comprehend on their diet of silly garbage. I didnt LOVE the music score...but the good things more than made up for it. | June 20, 2008 | N/A | |||
| 21 - PG-13 | Visually flashy, but extremely cliche and predictable tale of WINNING and then, of course, LOSING it all in Vegas. Very by the numbers, dot to dot, like I've seen it 5 times before. Beyond the fun the Director was having making Vegas and Blackjack look amazing, there just isn't much else to offer. I never once believed that Kate Bosworth would give The Jim Sturgees character 5 minutes of her time. I disliked her in Superman Returns as well and am just now of the opinion that I don't like her much at all. She and everyone else thinks she's prettier than she actually is. | June 20, 2008 | N/A | |||
| Kung Fu Panda - PG | WOW!! Fantastic fun!! Loved it! So much better than most animated films. this is as close to PIXAR material as you can get. SO happy they made this without pandering to the kiddies. Jack Black is funny and Dustin Hoffman is suprising deep in his role of the Master. This is a keeper and I think will even improve with multiple viewings. Especially loved all the training sequences and the rise and fall of Tae-Lung... it reminded me of a much better fall of Darth Vader/Anakin Skywalker. Damn.. coulda beeen. Loved hearing Jackie Chan's voice as Monkey as well. | June 20, 2008 | N/A | |||
| Drillbit Taylor - PG-13 | Ya knowwww..... It just kinda lays there and doesn't do much. A few scattered laughs here and there, but sadly it just kinda adds up to nothing. The kids are fun but any story revolving around Owen Wilson just kinda falls flat. GREAT cameo by Adam Baldwin. | June 20, 2008 | N/A | |||
| The Forbidden Kingdom - PG-13 | Color this a guilty pleasure if need be but I had a damn good time with this wanna-be Chinese Cinema flick. Sure.. it's american made, but thats not down home fight choreography. Just great, great stuff. Chan and Li are fantastic in this as well. Right or wrong.. I had a blast with my 2 boys at the theater enjoying this bad-ass chop sockey radness. Loved Jet Li as the Monkey King. | June 20, 2008 | N/A | |||
| Johnny Mnemonic - R | This is a bucket load of STUPID. Really terrible film all the way around. I enjoy looking at DINA MEYER (Starship Troopers) but beyond that this movie offers nothing but head slap stupid moments. Ice-T looks ridiculous and he should be embarressed by this now. Robert Longo is a pretty hideous director as the acting was abyssmal across the board and his film grammar is complete ASS. The whole "cyber-punk" theme just looks ridiculous and is completely out of date as represented in this flick. It rarely gets more stupid than this flick. | June 15, 2008 | N/A | |||
| Vince Vaughn's Wild West Comedy Show: 30 Days & 30 Nights - Hollywood to the Heartland - R | This plays much better as a bonus feature doc. to the actual Wild West Comedy Show rather than the actual show itself, which we only see in brief snippets. I appreciate the behind-the-scenes look at a 30-day tour, but the film seemed to be marketed more as a "concert film" than a Documentary following the show. Show us the actual show and I would dig this Doc. as the making of. And while I liked the featured comedians (especially Ahmed Ahmed) they were rather middle-of-the-road to me. Just not great. Justin Long's impression of Vince Vaughn in Swingers was actually the only thing that got a true genuine laugh from me throughtout the entire film. | June 15, 2008 | N/A |
