Talk Radio is an extraordinary powerful film directed by Oliver Stone which is also inspired by the true story of Alan Berg.

    - Alan Berg

"Alan Berg was a Denver talk-radio host who was murdered on June 18, 1984. He was a goofy-looking bird, with a thin face and a bristly white beard that hid the ravages of teenage acne. He wore reading glasses perched far down on his nose, and he dressed in unlikely combinations of checks and stripes and garments that looked left over from the 1950s. When the members of a lunatic right-wing group gunned him down in the driveway of his home, they could not have mistaken him for anybody else.

I met Berg three or four times. The first time I was going to be on his radio show, I listened to it as I drove from Boulder, Colo., to Denver. He was chewing out some hapless housewife whose brain was a reservoir of prejudices against anyone who was the slightest bit different from her. Berg was telling her that no one in his right mind would want to be anything like her at all.

"Why were you so hard on that lady?" I asked him, when we were on the air. "She was asking for it," Berg said. "Why would she call up and feed me all those straight lines if she didn't want me to tell her how stupid she was?""
    - ROGER EBERT

Eric Bogosian wrote the screenplay for Talk Radio which was based on his own original play, with the help from Oliver Stone, but he used quite a handful of biographical information on Alan Berg. Being that this movie was mixed with Eric's own original content, as well as the truth, some facts were turned around but you still get the gist of what Alan Berg was all about.

Talk Radio is an amazing film. Barry Champlain, played by Eric Bogosian, is the man who is portraying Alan Berg. There's a little something about Barry that you should know about...he is pissed off at the world and he will say anything that he feels like to your face. What's even scarier then Barry in this film are the people who call into the radio station, where it's there that lies the enemy and it seems Barry becomes our hero(or you may actually think otherwise). But there are just some buttons that you shouldn't push, something that Barry seems to have trouble keeping under control, for he's pushing every single person's button. Many people hate Barry Champlain, but of course it's the people that hate him the most who call in and help keep Talk Radio the number one talk show in Dallas.

The whole movie mainly just consists of long conversations between Barry and his callers, but don't let that fool you...these conversations are very intense and powerful. Half the people who call in are either psychotic, depressed or troubled and some are even so angry at Barry that they go as far as making scary death threats. You have to see this movie and just listen to what all these people have to say. It's a series of sick conversations, ranging from pathetic, scary, to outright hilarious(yes, many parts here are very funny), and it just seems to remind us again how messed up this world really is. Great acting, outstanding dialogue, and emotionally powerful storytelling. One of Oliver Stone's best films. Highly Recommended!

    The Funhouse The Funhouse
    5.0 Stars by Creep
The Funhouse is a great little campy, fun, atmospheric horror flick. This is another popcorn flick with a good old Halloween holiday feel to it.

    Plot -

"Against her father's orders, Amy goes to a sleazy traveling carnival with her new boyfriend Buzz, her best friend Liz, and Liz's boyfriend Richie. Unbeknownst to the four teens, Amy's prank-happy little brother Joey (who happens to be obsessed with classic horror movies) sneaks out of the house and follows them to the carnival...which Amy's father was opposed to because a couple of girls were found murdered at its previous location; no one knows who killed the two children or how, although both girls had to be identified via dental records.

At the carnival, the four youngsters smoke marijuana and sneak into a 21-and-over strip joint. They heckle Madame Zena the fortune teller , visit a freaks of nature exhibit, and view a magic show. Finally, the foursome telephone their parents and lie to them, so they can spend the night in the carnival's funhouse - actually a dark ride - after it closes. While Joey waits for them to emerge, the teenagers enjoy a sexual romp in the dark funhouse. Then they notice the Funhouse Barker's assistant - a huge man in a Frankenstein suit who never speaks - making out with a lingerie-clad Madame Zena (who is old enough to be the teens' grandmother). She demands a hundred dollars from "Frankenstein," and then refuses to "go all the way" as agreed. When she won't give back the money, "Frankenstein" attacks and strangles her to death. The four teenagers attempt to leave the funhouse, but it is locked up. It is now up to the group of four young teenagers to survive the night from the Frankenstein masked creature, and his crazed father Conrad Straker who is protecting him."

More then half of this movie just shows the teenagers hanging out at the carnival getting into all sorts of little mischievous adventures, and that's all in the beginning of the film. It's in the middle of the movie when the terror starts picking up little by little, but everything before that was the perfect build up and it still managed to be creepy without even showing anything at all. It was the tone of the film that carried it so well...the weird carnival with a troubled past, the creepy homeless people just wandering around aimlessly, an angry old fortune teller, sad deformed animals, a drunken magician dressed as Dracula, and a whole bunch of freaky deaky carnival ride owners. It's later on when the horror really gets thrown into your face with the psychotic ride owner Conrad Straker and his horribly deformed, mentally challenged blood thirsty son.

The acting isn't all that bad at all and the story, although not too original, was told in a very creepy fashion. Again, this is just a fun little horror flick, nothing's here that will stick with you forever but it is still enjoyable to watch(perhaps one of those movies that's good for a stormy night). This is another one that's not all about the gore, but more just for the creepy atmosphere and bizarre characters. I think this is one of Tobe Hooper's best films and I highly recommend it if you're a fan of campy little horror films with great dark atmosphere. I grew up on this one and I just love this movie!

    Witchboard Witchboard
    5.0 Stars by Creep
Witchboard is a good creepy little 80's horror film. The movie was directed by Kevin S. Tenney, the same man who brought you "Night of the Demons". I remember being frightened when I saw this as a little kid, and even though not so much any more, this movie still has the tendency to creep you out. If you've seen Night of the Demons then you should already know, just like Witchboard, Kevin S. Tenney tends set the cheese factor at a very high level. Yes Witchbaord is cheesy, but it's done in such a way that makes the movie a very fun film to watch. Like Night of the Demons, Witchboard has many creepy elements that are thrown into mix. Right in between the corny humor and the dramatic acting lies a very chilling story to be told, which involves an even creepy character that goes by the name of Malfeitor. And don't expect any gore, although this is rated R this movie isn't about that.

"Witchboard centers around Linda Brewster and the evil that befalls her whilst trying to communicate with the dead with a Ouija board. Linda falls under the seductive spell of the Ouija one night at a big party, and while her friend warns her to "never play with it alone", Linda does just that. She comes in contact with a spirit named "David" who claims to be the spirit of a seven year old boy, but in reality it is the spirit of an axe murderer named Malfeitor. Malfeitor starts to use his supernatural force to kill off all of Linda's acquaintances in a series of bizarre accidents. However, by the time that anybody realizes what the hell is going on, Malfeitor has already seized control of Linda's soul."

Don't watch this movie and expect any top notch grade "A" film making. This is a semi low budget horror film that doesn't take it self as serious as you might think. The acting sometimes becomes over dramatic, but that's not to say that the acting is really bad. The acting is actually really good, and given the situations that are thrown into the story, the performances become quite believable. The humor in Witchboard, same as Night of the Demons, is subtle and quite cheesy but it's always very funny. Not "laugh out loud" humor, but still very funny. The good thing too was that the humor, or even the moments of dramatic acting, never really took away from the creep factor and as a matter of fact there are some truly chilling moments. Add to that a very creepy score and a very creepy character, Malfeitor, you got yourself an eerie little gem here. Witchboard is highly recommended! Watch this one alone at night.

    Hell Night Hell Night
    5.0 Stars by Creep
Hell Night is a creepy little fun horror movie from the 80's. The atmosphere in this movie is amazing, and to me atmosphere is one of the strongest qualities in a horror film. Yes there's the typical 80's cheese, but it's always fun and it never takes away from the fear that this movie delivers. We get a spooky old mansion in the dark foggy mist, possibly haunted by a ghost, and a killer who's on a murderous rampage killing off a group of teens one by one. It's all great and there are some really true intense nail biting moments in here as well. To me, this is Linda Blair's best movie by far.

"Hell Night focuses on Marti, a young college co-ed played by Linda Blair. Marti is pledging a sorority and must endure "hell night," the night when pledges must perform some idiotic stunt in order to become members. So, Marti along with fellow pledge Denise, must spend the night in Garth Mansion, along with fraternity pledges Jeff and Seth. Why Garth Manor you may ask? Well, it seems that millionaire Mr. Garth and his wife had three deformed children. Mr. Garth couldn't take this, so he slaughtered his family and killed himself, but only three bodies were found. The legend has it that Andrew, the youngest Garth child, still roams the grounds.

So, Marti and the rest of the gang enter Garth Mansion. Soon, frat president Jeff, and two cronies arrive to begin playing pranks on the group to try and frighten them. But, someone else is in the house, someone who isn't there for fun and games. One by one the young partiers are picked off by an unseen assailant. Is this all an elaborate "hell night" trick or has one of the Garth's returned to seek vengeance?"

Hell Night is such an underrated film that had never gotten the attention that it deserved. The beautiful Linda Blair was stunning in this film(and no, I'm not just talking about all that cleavage she showed here), even though that definitely was a plus. The acting wasn't great, but it wasn't bad either, and it never becomes too unbelievable. Actually the performances were just right for the type of movie that this was and the story, although not too original, was told in a very creepy fashion. Another great thing about this movie too was the score, the music here was very eerie and spine tingling and it had added much tension to several scenes in the movie.

This movie is definitely perfect to watch around Halloween time, for it does have that spooky spirited Halloween feel to it. I just loved this movie! Don't expect any gore or anything like that, because even though it's rated R with the occasional spurts of violence and some nudity, this movie strongly relies on the spooky dark atmosphere, along with a good old creepy story. Try to watch this movie in the dark, when you're alone at night, I'm sure you'll be quite pleased. Check this movie out...Hell Night is a must see!

Paradise Lost - The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills Paradise Lost - The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills
    5.0 Stars by Creep
This one is truly horrifying. It's shocking, ugly, depressing and repulsive. This documentary will definitely leave some sort of mark on you and I'm sure you won't be able to shake it off that easily. It's based on the true story of "The West Memphis 3"(Damien Echols, Jessie Misskelley, Jason Baldwin), who "supposedly" murdered three young children in the Robin Hood Hills area of West Memphis, Arkansas. They say that Damien Echols, the alleged ringleader, was partially influenced by Death Metal and that he dressed in black clothes and practiced in the Wicca religion. These were just a few subjects that were brought to the people's attention at the trial. The West Memphis 3 still sit in prison till this day and there are many who actually believe that the three defendants were wrongfully convicted at the trial.

Damien Echols was sentenced to death. Jessie Misskelley and Jason Baldwinwere were sentenced to life in prison.

The Murders at Robin Hood Hills:

"Three eight year old boys(Steve Branch, Christopher Byers, and Michael Moore), were found stripped naked and had been hog-tied with their own shoelaces: their right ankles tied to their right wrists behind their backs, the same with their left limbs. Their clothing was found in the creek, some of it twisted around sticks that had been thrust in the muddy creek bed. The clothing was mostly turned inside-out; two of the boys' underwear was never recovered. All of the boys had been severely beaten about their heads and faces, and Byers further had a fractured skull. Chris Byers had deep lacerations and injuries to his scrotum and penis. The original autopsies were inconclusive as to time of death, but stated that Byers died of blood loss (from either stab wounds or a deep head wound), and the other boys drowned."

You have to watch this documentary and tell me what you think. You might actually think that they're innocent because at the trial there were just so many things that really didn't sound right. Or you might just agree with the courts and believe that justice was well served. You'll know more what I'm talking about when you see this documentary. It's scary. This is real life horror, and it's actually more terrifying then most horror films out there. The good news is that you can watch the whole thing on YouTube. Last time I checked they had the whole documentary in several parts, but be warned, the subject matter in this is disturbing as Hell. Just go to YouTube and type in "Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills"

There is also a sequel to this documentary titled Paradise Lost 2: Revelations.

    Possessed Possessed

This isn't one of the best horror movies out there, but it sure is an extremely entertaining well made for television film. I first saw this movie when they premiered it on Showtime around the Halloween season back in 2000. I had heard of this film months before they aired it, which got me even more psyched to see it, and I even did a little research on it. From what I've heard this movie was based on the actual 1949 case of a Maryland boy which inspired "The Exorcist", and everything that I read on the computer showed that this was indeed
true. So for anyone out there who wants to get an idea of what really happened on the actual case, I suggest you go and see this movie.

    The True Story:

"It began in Maryland on the evening of January 15, 1949, when 14-year-old "John Hoffman" and his grandmother heard strange scratching and dripping noises in their house. No explanation could be found for the noises, which stopped after ten days, only to be replaced by mysterious footsteps and drumbeats. After John's Aunt Dorothy suddenly died, the poltergeist-like phenomena increased - with John's mattress shaking violently, food flying through the air and furniture falling over. John and his parents tried to communicate with the poltergeist, which at the time claimed to be the spirit of Aunt Dorothy.

Then, in late February, livid red marks emerged on John's skin, taking the shape of actual words. After neither physicians nor psychiatrists could find anything wrong with John, his parents, although Lutheran, consulted a Roman Catholic priest. His recommendations of prayers and holy water only seemed to aggravate John's condition. John's mother took him to St. Louis, hoping things would calm down. But the manifestations intensified. "Father Lawrence," a Jesuit priest, came to visit John in St. Louis, saying prayers over him and pinning two crucifixes under his pillow. After he left, one crucifix propelled itself across the room and the other moved to the foot of the bed as the bed shook violently.

On March 16, the Archbishop of St. Louis gave Father Lawrence permission to begin the formal rite of exorcism. During the first night of the ritual, marks appeared on John's skin 30 times -- including the word "Hell" and a portrait of a Satanic visage. The 45-minute ritual was performed several times a night over the next week. John's responses became increasingly rabid, including screaming torrents of profanity and foreign words, violent seizures and uncontrolled urinating. With the parents' permission, John was converted to Catholicism. But his responses to the rituals only became worse. The disturbances suddenly stopped on March 26. Father Lawrence believed John's possession was over.

However, they began again on March 31, with John's behavior during the rituals getting even more violent. "I am always in him," the demon said through John's lips. After more days of no progress, Father Lawrence read about an 1870 case of possession that provided a key to exorcising the demon. On the night of April 18, he forced John to wear a chain of religious medals and hold a crucifix in his hand during the exorcism ritual. When Father Lawrence commanded the demon to declare itself, John exploded in a violent spasm of amazing strength, needing five men to hold him down. At 11 p.m., John suddenly interrupted the ritual by shouting, "Satan! I am St. Michael. I command you, Satan, to leave his body now!" After then enduring the most violent spasms yet, John uttered, "He is gone" and suddenly returned to normal, breaking into a smile."

William Peter Blatty, then a student at Georgetown University, read about John's story in the newspapers. The story stuck with him and 20 years later he fictionalized it to create "The Exorcist."

The acting in this isn't all that great and this movie doesn't come close to being as good as The Exorcist, but trust me, this is a very entertaining and edifying movie. This film has R rated material but mainly for subject matter alone, don't expect any gore or anything like that. Also, don't watch this and expect anything like The Exorcist either because you will be disappointed if you do. Understand that this was made for television and it does have the occasional made for TV cheese, but it's always fun to watch and yes, there are some truly creepy ass moments as well. You should definitely see this movie, it's very well made and plus it's very interesting to see what actually happened to the real boy. I recommend it.

The Midnight Hour The Midnight Hour

This is one of my favorite holiday movies. This was another made for TV movie back in the 80's that I caught around Halloween time. I know this movie use to be on DVD and I actually own a copy, but unfortunately as far as I know this movie is out of print. You should still see it if you can find a copy somewhere because this movie was just awesome. I know that they have used copies on Amazon but there asking for over $100 and that's just ridiculous. Maybe they have a cheap copy somewhere on EBay but I don't know for certain.

This movie has a lot of shit in it...vampires, zombies, a werewolf, and even a midget zombie(the cutest zombie I have ever seen). It's about a teenage boy named Phil, who on Halloween time, shows his classmates a slideshow of a legendary witch from their community named Lucinda. After class one of Phil's dumb friends, named Mitch, gets an idea and tells everyone that they should steal artifacts from Lucinda's three hundred year old wardrobe and wear them as costumes. Of course, a group of them feel the need to go along with Mitch's idea, and after school the teens break into an old basement where Lucinda's artifacts remain. While in the basement one of them comes across an old trunk bearing the "Grenville" seal. Nathaniel Grenville was actually the man responsible for hanging Lucinda hundreds of years ago, and saving the town from her curse. The teens now also feel that they should take the trunk along with them on their little mission to the local cemetery.

While at the cemetery the group of teens, now wearing their Halloween costumes, decide to open the trunk and inside they find Nathaniel's ring and a timeworn scroll. Melissa, one of Phil's friends, takes the scroll and begins to read the accursed incantation. Little did she know that she just raised hell from beyond the grave and everyone and everything starts to rise from their tomb. In the mist of all this chaos Phil meets a beautiful young girl named Sandy, who wears a cheerleading outfit and does cheers with her pom-poms. What Phil doesn't know at first is that Sandy is also a zombie herself, but the thing is that she's actually a good zombie.

Back at the teens Halloween party the dead are dancing it up, literally. No one at the party seems to know that the zombies are crashing it, for everyone there is dressed up in a costume. The party's biggest threat though is Lucinda, the witch/vampire that they brought back from the grave, and it's all up to Phil and his new girlfriend Sandy to save the day...or can they?

This movie is just so much fun. What a great Halloween time view this was! Don't expect any violence or anything like that because this was a made for TV movie that was viewable for the younger crowd, all though they did show some stuff that might be too frightening for them. The good thing too was, it wasn't all that cheesy(well at least not in a bad way) and this movie had plenty of spooky atmosphere to go around. If you can you have to get your hands on this movie. Hopefully they'll release it again on DVD just in time for the Halloween season, but you should really try to see this one as soon as possible. Like I said, it's one of my favorite holiday movies!
