The Dark Knight
PG-13
Absolutely fantastic. No opportunity to get bored, plot was great, music was spot on, acting was superb, Heath Ledger was mind blowing. You must see this film!
Ocean's Thirteen
PG-13
Meh, not anywhere as near as good as I was hoping but marginally better than Ocean's Twelve. Worth a watch, even if it's just for Eddie Izzard's atrocious acting.

1.
American History X
R
This is an extremely powerful and provocative film with some disturbing scenes. Outstanding performances from Edward Norton and Edward Furlong.
2.
The Libertine
R
A great opening monologue and an extremely strong and compelling performance from Johnny Depp throughout. A must see for any Johnny Depp fan that appreciates him for his talent and not just his ridiculously good looks.
3.
Donnie Darko
R
A strange, intriguing and mesmerising film. I always seem to be in the mood to watch Donnie Darko, which doesn't happen with films very often. The soundtrack is also superb.
4.
Scent of a Woman

A very stunning performance from Pacino to the point where I'm quite happy to forgive the odd cliche. The tango scene is breath taking and the closing scene where Pacino gives his speech is very powerful.
5.
The Godfather, Part III
R
A powerful ending to a powerful trilogy. Pacino gives a very evocative perfomance in the closing scenes outside the Opera house.
6.
Fight Club

How anyone can not think Brad Pitt is a good actor after seeing this is beyond me. Extremely fresh and entertaining, great twist, superb acting and directing. A "must see" for any serious film lover!

Diary of the Dead
by TaniaPretty watchable movie.
And quite easy to review also.
Wanna bet?
- Sudden zombie boom;
- film students catching zombies on camera;
- zombies roaming around all over the place;
- film students running away from zombies while catching them on camera;
- normal people turning into zombies;
- film students witnessing normal people turn into zombies while catching them on camera;
- ...
... And so on and so forth.
It's not a great film, as you may suspect already, but it isn't all that bad either.
The amateur camera work adds a nice touch to it. Makes it feel a little different from other zombie movies and a bit more realistic.
As far as realism can go in this genre, that is.
But, yeah, the directing style helped the rating a great deal. And considering that I only gave it 3 stars... You can imagine how it isn't such a must-see movie.Watch it only if you have a tendency for enjoying movies with an amateur filming style.
If you don't, then there's a pretty good chance you'll hate it.
And if, on top of that, you don't usually tend to care for regular zombie movies all that much either... Then there's a pretty good chance you'll end up slitting your wrists halfway through it.posted 3 days ago -

The Dark Knight
by DavidTo start off here. I've been a Batman fan since I was child. I do remember reading all of the comics I could get my hands on. As with most kids I had alot of comics I would read but Batman was always the top pick for me. He was the one that was real to me. No superpowers, just a ordinary man who has built up his mind and body to perfection in a attempt to rid Gotham City of the kind of criminal element that took his parents away from him as a child. I do remember thinking of Batman as I was reading the comics back then ( and I still do) that maybe in his mind he figures that if he puts away enough villians that in the end he will get to see his parents alive one last time. A kids way of thinking I guess but thats one thought I had from my childhood about him that always stuck with me. Then in my teens the film series started. The previous film series started out promising with Batman 1989, not a great film but a good start. Each film that followed got worse until we hit the lowest of the low with" Batman And Robin" a film so bad that I haven't been able to sit through the entire thing to this day. I have to admit things looked bleak for the Batman live action films . To me I could at least say I had the animated series to fall back on and the great animated film " Batman Mask Of The Phantasm" which anyone who hasn't seen this film should check it out as soon as possible. Then Christopher Nolan entered the picture and helped bring life back to the Batman live action films. I will begin my Dark Knight review with this, hype can be the undoing of an undeserving movie. And I've never seen a movie in my lifetime with more hype than The Dark Knight ( maybe except for Batman 1989). Between the return of The Joker and Two-Face to the big screen, the tragic death of Heath Ledger and the fact that it was following one of the most realistic and best comic based movies ever, the pressure was on Chris Nolan and his cast to deliver. And not only did they, but they hit it out of the park. The plot was finely crafted to make every scene, every character, important to the film. To make a long story short and simple, Harvey Dent is trying to clean up Gotham through the "proper" channels, basically acting as Batman's lawful counterpart. The Joker, however, would rather watch the city burn (figuratively). Heath Ledger dissolved into the sick, twisted role in a way I've seen very few actors do and deserves to be commended, regardless of his untimely passing. Its been a while since I could say that something made my skin crawl until The Joker tells the story (or at least A story) of how he got his facial scars. That along with the pencil trick which made me jump in my seat.
Gotham's need for a hero is glorified in this film. And so is it's hate for that same hero. A masked hero is not a hero at all. He is more like a vigilante who is to be arrested on sight. For it is he who has brought darkness upon them. Hence, they await a 'White Knight'. One who does not need to hide his face from the people. One whose identity is known by all and sundry. One who fears nothing. We find ourselves witnessing sacrifice. Then again, it isn't merely the sacrifice of a person, or even many, for the sake of something good in the end. It is the sacrifice of oneself.
The genius of Christopher Nolan brings to us the sequel of Batman Begins, a revamp to the entire saga of Batman on the big screen. A film that helped change the way the entire world looked at comic book superheroes. The Dark Knight succeeds in taking it not just one, but a couple of steps further. Christian Bale is still the same under that black mask. Heath Ledger's portrayal of The Joker is not just terrifying or shocking, it is beyond belief. That voice, that walk, that laugh! It is nothing short of haunting. Then there is Aaron Eckart, playing Harvey 'Two-Face' Dent, who is just as good. Everyone in this film is spot on. Everything about it is a revelation.
It's two and a half hours long. The dialogue is gripping. It is absolutely magnificent seeing something like this on the big screen. The entire concept of Batman wanting to go back to becoming Bruce Wayne and be done with his superhero days, and how he tries to achieve that by glorifying Harvey Dent, the DA of Gotham City, goes deep into the character of Bruce Wayne. Bruce Wayne is, after all, only human. The character of The Joker, his want to give Gotham a 'better class of criminal', to prove that 'when the chips are down, civilized people will eat each other' shows us an entire different side of the common people.
Going back to The Joker, he is perhaps the most complex villain created in comic book history and giving him a simple 'bad guy' tag would not be doing justice to him. The wonders they have done with him is unbelievable. He robs millions of dollars only to burn it. He is indeed a man one 'does not understand'. He is one who 'just want to watch the world burn'. The film is a work of art, often obscure. The sequences have been made with the utmost attention to detail, the last 45minutes being absolutely outstanding.
While Heath deserves the most attention for the Joker, the rest of the cast deserves some extra praise. Christian Bale is excellent as both playboy Bruce Wayne and the dark knight. Aaron Eckhart plays the ying to Batman's yang until the accident that scars him, turning into a madman with a purpose. Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman both show their old charm and Maggie Gyllenhaal steps in and does a very good job replacing Katie Holmes. To sum up here since I feel I might be rambling, this is an epic comic book masterpiece that I feel fans and even non fans of Batman will enjoy. Simply one of the bestHey, you should really see this!

Halloween (2007)
by TaniaPretty interesting to follow the life story of an emerging sociopath such as Myers.
This is exactly what captivated me the most in this film: the chance to follow the evolution of one of the most mind-blowing psychopathologies in the history of mankind. (Well, at least in my book it is a very mind-blowing one.) Here we get the chance to take a peek at its implications while it is still in a sort of incubation stage. While the child is still discovering his abnormal anti-social tendencies as well as his compelling urge to slice open every breathing being.
And although I wouldn't have minded witnessing the whole thing right from the very start (right since the moment that little psycho brat was born), Myers' already a young man when the movie begins. Pitty! But the way this story is portrayed, I guess watching him in his earlier years wouldn't be much of a help when it comes to shed some light on his condition.
And it is in fact the whole story behind the main character that makes this movie worthwhile. Not the chills (which are very few), not the bloody scenes, not the suspense,... Nothing like that. It's really not all that scary to watch. But it is rather unsettling, though. At least until Myers grows up, that is. Then it's just like all the other horror movies portraying serial killers. Nothing new in that department.
Still, the first half makes up perfectly for the 'been there, done that' rest of the film. Can you imagine what would be like to have a child like that?
Well, take a look and decide for yourself.

Dan in Real Life
by TaniaMeh... Too sweet for my taste.
But I'm not gonna say it's a bad movie. I'm sure you'll love it, if by any chance you're into this sort of films.
And Carell is quite funny as this 'How the hell am I supposed to deal with these teenage girls who happen to be my daughters' kind of father. I personally liked him better on the Daily Show, but I must admit he doesn't do bad here either.
This was a first for me, you know? I mean, watching him perform in a movie. And I was quite pleased to find his talent for comedy is still in shape.
But as it turns out, it wasn't enough to win me over. The romance factor is too much of a presence and spoils just about any laughs Carell's silliness may provide.
And besides, Binoche's being part of the cast didn't help all that much either. I don't know why, but that woman really gets on my nerves sometimes. I think maybe it's because of her annoying naive look and persistent silly-cute smile. A real pãozinho sem sal as they say in my country.
Roughly translating it, a real tiny bread without salt.
What?
It makes sense where I come from.Average romance/drama/comedy.

Wanted
by TaniaCrazy, crazy action flick!
Quite different from all the rest, I can tell you.
First of all, and unlike most action movies out there, it's not supposed to portray reality while at the same time using some ridiculous, annoying far-fetched scenes as a way of dealing with the infamous plot holes. This happens all the time in this genre. You know like, for instance, when a plot is flowing in a somewhat tidy fashion and then out of the blue comes a car flying over a burning bridge, only to fall on the road later again and keep on moving as if it never happened.
No, Wanted's not like that at all. It was never meant to portray reality as we know it. It's way too insane for that.
Let's just say they put the far in the far-fetched and manage to go beyond it. And what usually looks ridiculous in other movies becomes acceptable and even enjoyable in this one. Because they're not breaking any reality-bound rules. And how could they? The whole movie makes us feel that there are absolutely no rules to be broken. It's like they've created a whole new reality where anything goes. A quite clever move in my opinion, as it completely obliterates the far-fetchedness problem. Truth is, you can't have a far-fetched scene in a movie where all the scenes are meant to look unreal.
And that's really the beauty of Wanted.
That and also the dark humour in it. Sharp and unconventional, just the way I like it.
Also, the directing is just amazing. Definitely not ordinary in any sense of the word. Sometimes it's sheer madness, with very specific scenes rushing after each other to provide you with a sense of being in the characters' shoes and seeing things from their perpective, not only in terms of what they're capturing with their eyes, but also in terms of how those images and situations affect their state of mind.
Yeah, some shots are really that good.
But I guess I won't be mentioning any more about the directing. Better watch for yourself. As it turns out, reviews are no match for the real deal. Which in this case is well worthy of your time and attention.
Although...
And you know what they say...
All good comes to an end, right?...
Right.
(Except for Fight Club, that is. And very few other movies... But that's really not the point here.)
Well, despite all the good things I've been mentioning until now... I gotta be honest. The movie theme is not all that exciting or even original. And it's my belief they didn't make all that much effort while working on the plot either. Which means the storyline could have been a lot more breathtaking and also a whole lot more awe-inducing.
Very entertaining, but by no means brain candy.
Still, it beats the crap out of most movies lacking a top-noch plot. And considering the amount of films which fit in that category, I'd say Wanted is a pretty goddamn good movie in the overall.
And that's that. It's a bit hard to explain the way this movie works.
Better watch the thing and find out for yourself.posted 7 days ago -

Kung Fu Panda
by LadyAfter a bit of a slow start, this film really comes to life about half way through, the animation of course was great, Jack Black's voice completely matched the main character and the ideas and choreography that went into this film was quite something.
This feature length cartoon really has captured something from the Martial Arts movies and with clever little morals for the young ones to catch on to. Kung Fu Panda was a really enjoyable film. One for the kids (adults too?)

by LadySome really impressive effects in this film throughout. Well done to James McAvoy for landing this role, of which he played the main character well. The storyline was more impressive than some other graphic novels, despite a lot of it being pretty predictable.
Angelina jolie didn't really put any kind of stamp on it, other than pretty action chick.
Overall a very enjoyable action flick and again, impreesive effects, not sure how much of that came across better as it was on the big screen.Hey, you should really see this!

Sweet Smell of Success
by xGaryThis pitch black hearted noir was something of a flop on its release, and it's not difficult to see why. Not through lack of quality, but rather the fact that its unrelenting cynicism and bleak outlook is certainly not for the faint hearted. Tony Curtis turns in easily his best performance as Sidney Falco, an obsequious press agent who is perfectly willing to sell his soul to get on top, and Burt Lancaster is similarly superb, brilliantly cast against type as a cold-hearted tyrant (even describing an attack on his character as an attack on his country, the cry of despots throughout the ages) who controls all around him through contemptible manipulation. The core of the film is the creepily ambiguous relationship between he and his sister; at one point he refers to her "apron strings", an allusion to motherhood, but he also keeps a portrait on his desk as one would a spouse or lover... It is unusual in that instead of fists and bullets, all the damage is done through words and insinuations; the razor sharp dialogue is amongst the best ever written for the screen, and the magnificent photography represents the city streets as blackly as the protagonists' hearts. The package is completed by a soundtrack of fantastic contemporary jazz and the overall result is one of the pinnacles of film noir.

Hancock
by TaniaHum...
I don't quite know what to think of this movie. And I still don't know whether it was supposed to be a comedy or a serious film. I mean, the first half is full of humorous scenes and funny lines, but then they somehow turn the story around and start to get a bit on the weird romantic side (and I don't mean weird in a good way). And the explanation for the main character's condition would be fine by me if only they hadn't embellished it so much.
As the movie was developing I was going like: 'HA HA HA HA HA... That was funny!... HA HA HA.. Funny as hell!... HA HA... HA... ah... Hu?!... Really?!... Ooohh, right... So that's why he... But what about... Oh, man! WTF?!... Is it just me or are they turning the plot into a cheesy romantic one?... Wait, wait... There's still hope... Ehr... Nope. There it is. They really are doing it... Thank you so much for the mainstream outcome, you guys. I really appreciate it.'
Basically, this movie was pretty entertaining until they started with the metaphysical, romantic mumbo jumbo.
But that was about it. I don't think it's a great film whether with or without the romantic BS.
A whole lot funny, though. Especially the first half or so.Only fun the fun of it. It's not a great film.

Withnail and I
by xGaryWithnail & I is the tale of a pair of out of work actors in 1969 Camden who decide to get away from it all for a weekend in a country cottage. And that's about it; plot heavy this film is not. It's all about the character of Withnail, played to perfection to a pre-insufferable Richard E. Grant; in fact Grant was a tee-totaler when he made this film, but Bruce Robinson insisted that the leading actors be paralytic during filming, just to make it more authentic! The pair are like a foul-mouthed, drunken version of Laurel & Hardy as they stagger through the ordinary world in much the same way as Raoul Duke and Dr. Gonzo were in Fear & Loathing, except that this film is very, very British. This film is all about the dialogue, which is hilarious, containing some of the funniest swearing you'll ever hear! It is also, like Gilliam's film, making a comment about the times in which they lived; the end of the sixties. Except in Fear & Loathing, Thompson was bemoaning the loss of power and optimism of the American youth movement, and here Withnail is shown as an endearing but childish and cowardly person, constantly avoiding responsibility and life as a whole, through a cocktail of drink and drugs. He is left behind at the end, like the decade, as "I" gets a haircut and a job, and moves on with his life. Some may think that the "screaming homosexual" uncle Monty is a bit of a caricature and figure of fun, but he is in fact the most sensitive and sympathetic character in the film. it may not translate well to foreign audiences, but it will forever be a firm favourite amongst the British post hippy generation and students alike.

What Happens in Vegas...
by TaniaYeah, yeah, I know... WTF, right?
Wrong.
So, ok, it's not a masterpiece...
Hu?!
What the...
OMFG!
No way.
How can it be?
I mean... Kutcher and Diaz in the leading roles... A plot about two people getting married in Vegas while under the influence of alcohol...
Not a masterpiece?!... Really?
Who would have thought?
Well...
As it turns out, there are certain movies I'm willing to give a chance to, even though I'm well aware they won't be all that great. And all for the sake of a few good laughs. So maybe you shouldn't take my word for granted when it comes to comedy movies. Not unless you enjoy them the way I do. Which means to say separating them from all the other movies when it comes to decide whether they're good or not, and having a completely distinct rating system. And that's why I've decided, right from the start, to make a separate movie list for this genre. Because the way I enjoy this sort of movies is somewhat different from the way I enjoy all the others. While watching a comedy film, I'm not really looking for plot accuracy. Nor am I hoping the direction will swept me off my feet. I'm really just looking for a bit of fun.
All this to say that the above rating (as well as all my other ratings to comedy movies) should be perceived as a comparison within the genre and nothing but. And 3 stars means something like 'fun, but not too funny'. It won't crack you up, that's for sure. But it'll still be able to pull a few sincere laughs out of you.
Or not.
It will depend on how much you enjoy the genre.Recommended only to those who enjoy the genre just for the sake of a few good laughs.
If you're only looking for masterpieces, don't bother watching it. Nor any other comedy movie, for that matter.posted 16 days ago -

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
by TaniaI guess I'm a little fed up with Indiana. It used to be a lot of fun when I was little, but now I just don't know...
The thrill isn't there anymore, it seems. At least for me it isn't. Maybe they should have left it alone instead of making yet another sequel.
I mean, don't get me wrong. It's not a terrible movie. It's still pretty decent to watch (if you don't count the far-fetched scenes, that is). And Indianas' sense of humour is still as sharp as ever. But I guess we could have done without all the forced romantic explanations sorrounding this character's life. The way I see it, he was supposed to remain in our memory as some sort of mysterious icon forever in pursuit of new adventures. And that's why I think they shouldn't have bothered making this film. The magic is forever gone. Now he's just an ordinary man for all I care.
GODDAMN IT!!!

Funny Games (2008)
by TaniaThis movie is (I'm glad to say) a true anti-Hollywood anthem in all its essence. Its main guiding question seems to be: 'What would Hollywood NOT do?'. Because almost every single thing in it breaks (or at least defies) the rules that usually guide major movie productions. And it felt as if though it was meant to be a declared war against the traditional blockbuster pattern.
No wonder the theater room was almost empty. This is by no means a movie for the masses. And if you like your motion pictures with extra Hollywood dressing, then I would advise you to stay away from Funny Games. I'm sure you won't find it to be all that funny after all.
I, on the other hand, felt quite refreshed after having watch it. It was like the first breath of fresh air after having been locked inside a closet reeking of mothballs and old socks. It was undoubtedly a very pleasant way of breaking the blockbuster routine and somehow taking a rest from all the commercial movies that linger in the international film sector. It's like an epidemic tendency, nowadays. Every movie seems to follow the same steps as the previews ones. And maybe it has been like this all the time. But that doesn't mean I have to enjoy it. I actually don't. And that's why I'm thankful for the fact that at least a few movies still manage to avoid the dominant, tiring commercial cycle.
The thing I most liked about Funny Games is that it has the ability to pull the strongest feelings out of the viewers. Well, at least in my case it worked like a real button pusher. Tension was the word of the day. From a particular moment on, few were the scenes that didn't make me anxious to at least a certain degree. The story is gripping, the plot is great and the supposedly funny games are just outrageous (in a very good way, I mean). Plus, the performances are as fantastic and realistic as can be. I was already expecting it to be that way when it comes to Watts and Roth, but... HELL! Even Pitt managed to fall on my good side. He couldn't have done a better job. And his character... Absolutely out of this world!
'WHERE'S THE REMOTE?'
Priceless!
I'm sure not everyone will enjoy this particular scene, but I, for one, tend to think it was a clever move.
And, finally, the only reason why the above rating isn't higher is because of a few anti-climactic scenes that somehow broke the pace of the movie. Those particular scenes should have been shorter, in my opinion, because at some point they started to get a bit boring.
And I don't know... Maybe it was supposed to be that way....
Let's just say it didn't work for me.
And who knows?... Maybe it'll work for you.NOTE TO ALL THE HOLLYWOOD WORSHIPERS OUT THERE: Stay away - I repeat - STAY AWAY from this movie. Whatever you do, DO NOT watch it.

City of Angels
by TaniaOh, right... Now I remember why I didn't think too highly of this movie when I first saw it... I'd forgotten how terribly frustrating it was.
There's really nothing to it, is there?... Yeah, ok, an angels falls madly in love with a mortal, and I must admit that's not the kind of thing we see happening everyday, but... Besides that, what have we got here?... Ehr... Not much,right?... I mean, they talk, and talk, and hang around the library, and talk, and talk, and go fruit shopping, and talk, and talk, and stare at each other, and talk a little more, and cry, and argue, and... finally comes an interesting scene to break the dullness, and then... What was it, really?... Oh, that's right... They kiss, and cuddle, and talk, and talk, and... Yep, a love story pretty much like all the rest, except that he's an angel instead of a human being. And that's really the only original thing about this movie. And also what saved it from an even lower rating.Lovely, lovely movie.

El Orfanato (The Orphanage)
by TaniaI can't say this is a perfect spook movie, but I think it's still pretty good all the same. The plot is interesting enough to keep your attention throughout, and is also quite clever and original for its genre. The thing is, the atmosphere in it could have been a lot eerier than it was. Not only the heart racing scenes are almost non existent, but they're also a bit soft for my taste... Ok, cutting the crap, they're not heart racing at all in their majority. Which in turn makes this movie a lot less scarier than it actually could have been.
So, I guess what seems to make this film worthy of your time is really the story that is being told. That alone makes it all worthwhile. And the performances are quite good also. It is my belief the Spanish actors and actresses of the world are finally succeeding on not acting as if though movies were soap operas... Oh... If only the actors and actresses in my country were capable of that achievement... One can only hope. Not all that spooky, but worth a shot.
