Drag Me to Hell - PG-13 I've been anticipating this for a while. I was glad to see it getting strong reviews on it's release and it only made me more excited to see it.
The storyline is pretty straight forward: A young girl who works at a bank denies an ugly old woman an extension on her mortgage payment. Unfortunately for the young girl [who's name i don't remember, i think it was Kristine] the old woman is actually a witch....or something, and in a fit of anger, the old woman puts a curse on the girl for not helping her. The girl has 3 days before an evil spirit comes for her soul. She sets out to try and put an end to the curse, which in turn brings her face to face with a hooved demon, slimy corpse mouths rubbing on her face, flies up her nose and a whole lot of other fugly ass shit!

This turned out to be a lot funnier than i expected. It wasn't very scary unfortunately, but in typical Sam Raimi style, it was overly gross, silly and really enjoyable. I just can't believe how gross it was at times, lol! i was laughing so hard! You'll be cringing at a few scenes for sure.

One thing Sam is known for is his GREAT use of sound in his films, and this was FULL of them! He has a crazy imagination as well, some of the scenes were shot really well. The opening scenes before the credits were loud and visually very strong and the "curse" scene had some great camera work in it too. He has a really strong eye for dynamic direction, it's really enticing to the eyes.

I could recommend this to pretty much anyone, the balance of humor and horror would make it more appealing to a broader audience imo. You'll need to see it with a sense of humor though. If you're expecting a serious and slow burning dark horror film, you'll be disappointed. It's cartoony and over the top, and it makes no apologies for it, and that's what i liked about it. I also liked that they didn't cop out with the ending. It was a twist i THOUGHT i might see coming, but that didn't matter, i still liked the direction the final scene went in anyway.
I give credit to Alison Loham in this too, she took a very simple role and made her character really likeable. You actually gave a shit about her, and that doesn't happen a lot in horror films.

I'm tempted to give it a 4/5, and i think i will with another viewing. But for now, it's a 3.5.

See it!

The Combination - Unrated It touches on some strong subjects surrounding racism in Australia, but the whole "gangsta" element felt a little over the top and forced. A lot of the actors were new to acting, and you could tell in parts, but overall most of the them did a decent job. There was something missing though, something that stopped it from really punching through the screen, which is what i think it tried to do. Watchable, but nothing to rave about. July 7, 2009

10,000 B.C. - PG-13 I've heard bad things about this since it first came out. I happened to catch it randomly last night and was interested in seeing what it was like.
It starts off ok, but once the story kicks in, it just goes from mess to mess. Firstly, there's no historical accuracy in any of it, not that it's TRYING to be historically accurate, but it would have been good to see them do something a little more realistic. There's no structure to the landscape or the people that live in it. The characters walk from ice mountains to amazon forests and deserts like they're in walking distance of each other. It makes no sense and became really annoying.
The people that live in the lands are also really random, from Eskimos to Africans to Egyptians [?], and just when you least expect it, one white guy too. The "villains" in the film make no sense either, what are they? Egyptians, Myans, Asians? it's this random mish mosh of cultures and styles that has no explanation. They also have SHIPS?..........i've never heard of any SAVAGE CAVE PEOPLE building BOATS and going across seas.

As for the visual effects, surprisingly average, i thought they'd at least get that right. There's some really obvious blue screen pasted backgrounds in the beginning, and the abnormally large Sabertooth tiger looked very cartoony.

I felt like i was watching a history lesson for retards, it just seemed really juvenile and silly. It starts off as Apocalypse and ends like Stargate. I'm not quite sure what it was that i was watching? it's just bizarre.

Fast and Furious - PG-13 I loved part 1, the cast was my favourite thing about it, which is why i was excited for this, because they all came back for part 4. It was a shame to see my favourite character die, but it set up the movie pretty nicely so it was ok. This one had the best racing scenes in the franchise as well. May 29, 2009

Seven (Se7en) - R Good thriller with some shocking moments. I'll never forget seeing the ending for the first time, it was such a twist! May 27, 2009

Jumper - PG-13 I can see why this got crap reviews when it came out, it was mildly entertaining but was filled with SO many plot holes and unanswered questions. It's like they came up with this really cool concept for a story and couldn't be bothered filling in the gaps. The Jumpers "jump" all over the place and NO ONE seems to notice, even though they teleport in the middle of huge crowds. They are always teleporting OTHER random innocent bystanders to other parts of the world with ZERO consequences and we knew NOTHING about Samuel L. Jacksons character in this!......why was he hunting the Jumpers? what's his back story? so many annoying unanswered things!
The rest of the cast were HUGELY under developed as well, especially Rachel Bilson, who had more to do in the O.C than she did in this. The only real highlight was that guy from Billy Elliott [forgot his name], and Hayden Christianson looked good in it............everything else was a fast paced, empty mess.

Frontière(s) (Frontier(s)) - NC-17 Man, French horror is always so violent lol.gif This had a bit of a confusing start, but once the movie settles down after the first 10 minutes it became a lot smoother. I liked the direction the story went in, i wasn't sure what to expect, but i was pleasantly surprised. It's graphic, but not too much, for me anyway. Has a similar vibe to 'High Tension', but it's better. May 11, 2009

X-Men Origins - Wolverine - PG-13 Since it came out that the working print of this movie that leaked online IS in fact the final film going to be put in cinemas, i went ahead and watched it. I wasn't OVERLY excited about this movie, but i was curious, and to my surprise i really enjoyed it. There's been a really mixed reception about the leaked version, some people really hated it, i honestly can't say why? it's completely entertaining and fun from start to finish. The actors helped elevate the movie also, Hugh is ALWAYS good to watch as Wolverine, the guy playing Gambit was cool and Liev was PERFECT as Victor [Sabertooth]. I liked a few of the cameos in it too, seeing a young Cyclops was cool, as was the cameo by Xavier.

The action was pretty good, and even the missing effects didn't take away from some of the scenes for me. I look forward to seeing the final product at some point.

I'm not sure what it is people were expecting? it'll no doubt get the tired and endless comparisons to movies like Watchmen and The Dark Knight like ALL comic book films are getting now days. Personally...........i wasn't expecting it to be like either, so i really enjoyed it. The movie COULD go down to a 3.5 on repeat viewings, and the movie may seem a tiny bit rushed in places, but other than that, i honestly really liked it.

The Wackness - R 2.5 seems a bit low, but it really wasn't a BAD movie, it was just a bit boring. I didn't mind it though, i liked the mian character, i could relate to him a little, he was kinda cute too. Ben Kingsly got a bit annoying though, and i'm guessing the relationship between him and the main character was supposed to pull me in a bit more, but it didn't. Decent, but a bit flat all the way through. April 5, 2009

The Unborn - PG-13 It was a bit of a mess, the lead actress looked too much like she had stepped out of Gossip Girl and the exorcism at the end was pretty funny. There were some cool creepy images, but it wasn't very scary and the predictable and stupid ending was crap. Pointless.

Note to the Director: UPSIDE DOWN HEADS ISN'T SCARY.

Låt den Rätte Komma In (Let the Right One in) - R After hearing nothing but 5 star ratings and endless praise for this movie, i was expecting A LOT from it, and to be honest, it didn't live up to the hype as much as i thought it would.
I did enjoy it though, it was a decent thriller, it had a lot of atmosphere which i liked and the snowy Swedish backdrop gave it a really unique look and feel. The two leads did a great job and at times they had some really sweet moments.

It wasn't very scary, and i would have liked to have seen a bit more stuff going on, maybe a bit more of an exciting ending or some more gore/violence. I also would have liked to have seen a tiny bit more back story on Eli [the vampire girl], we know so little about her, not that i didn't like the mystery around her, i did, but i liked her so much i wanted to know a bit more about her.

For a movie that's had SO much praise by pretty much....EVERYONE, you'd expect it to be something anyone could watch, but i honestly wouldn't recommend this to everybody. In fact, people who are looking for a bit more gore and action may be really disappointed.

I would have liked it a bit more if they upped the anti a bit, but i still liked it for what it was, a quiet, slow burning, lite horror story.

Enjoyable, but it didn't blow my mind.

Watchmen - R Saw it last night on an Imax screen, good movie, hard to review though........there is SO much story to get through, SO much going on and it's VERY long. I don't think i could give it a proper rating until i saw it again, you definitely need to see it a few times to let it really soak in properly imo.
I can see why people either like it or hate it, it's a very unconventional superhero story, plus the movie itself is just massive, such a MONSTER! so it may turn some people off.
For people who like their stuff kinda violent and over sexed and quirky and plot heavy, you'll like it. Seeing it on an Imax screen was good fun too.
Dr. Manhattan's giant blue DICK flops about all over during the movie, so distracting

Really good movie, and in a few scenes kinda brilliant too. It's an experience, go see it.

Rachel Getting Married - R Good acting from everyone involved, i didn't find many of the characters very like able though and the hippie engagement and wedding were kind of annoying. It does drag at times, and when the movie finished i didn't feel like it really WENT anywhere....but i still didn't mind it. Anne Hathaway has the weirdest head, she looks like her face is MELTING.

I wouldn't recommend it to everyone.

Changeling - R Based on a true story about a woman who's young son goes missing in 1920's America. The LAPD claim to have found her son, but when Mommy brings him home, things don't seem right. Is it really him?
Of course most people by now know the story, it ISN'T her son, and Christine [ Angelina] sets out to find out what happened to her real son and uncover the truth. I was pretty surprised, the story ends up being a lot more brutal than i expected, and Angelina eats up the whole movie from the start. She's SO good in it! After her role in 'A Mighty Heart' and now this, i think it's time for her to nab her next Oscar! at least imo, but then i love her, don't i ;)
Nicely filmed, scored and cast, the best film of 09' for me so far, SEE IT!

Underworld: The Rise of the Lycans - R I've enjoyed the Underworld franchise, i don't LOVE it or anything, but it's still entertaining enough and good fum.
I went into this not expecting much, and not really caring for the storyline being a "flashback", i just wanted them to continue the story from the previous Underworld movie, but oh well.
After watching it though, i think it was a nice idea to give us a bit of Vampire history, and i enjoyed seeing actors from the first movie return. Bill Nighy and Michael Sheen stole the show, really great actors playing fairly straight forward characters, but adding enough of their own spark to the roles making the characters a little more interesting, they had some cool scenes. That big black scary guy from part 1 is in this too........i imagined what it would be like for him to corner me and possibly sexually assault me, very scary
There was some nice violent action, some cool scenes featuring some feral Werewolves, especially one "cave" scene which was kinda creepy. The rest was pretty much like the other 2 Underworld movies, easy to watch, decent enough and leaving you feeling like you should go out and buy some latex and walk around in it a lot.
My only minor issue with the movie was Rhona Mitra as Sonja, i'm not sure if she was the right person for the role, i pictured Sonja to be much more different than she was. She did an ok job, but i dunno, something about her just didn;t set well with me as much as the rest of the cast.
Oh, and there's also a really random sex scene, which was kinda corny and not very sexy. But oh well, the guy in it was pretty much NAKED so i got a good look.

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 - PG-13 The first one was alright, i enjoyed it in a tweeny girly type way. This new one is a bit of a turd though, two movies is too much, who cares abut these dumb cunts? and their "life experiences" are SO BORING and shit. One girl sort of has a pregnancy scare [oh my god! like], one other girl dates a guy who doesn't believe in true love [seriously! like], another one finds out she's good at acting and learns about herself through it [wow, like amazing], and the other one travels to Turkey [it actually looks like the American dessert with a few Belly dancers thrown in to "Turkey" it up] and finds out that digging up Ancient corpses reminds her of her dead Mother [ omg, like, so sad]..........lame!.....and don;t even start me on how much of a shit actress America Ferrara is, and Blithe Danner [ or however you spell it, she's Gwyneth Paltrows Mommy,] does a pretty SHIT job too.
And seriously, those pants must fucking stink being shared between 4 girls and being stuck in the post 500 times a year. Dirty bitches.

Milk - R I'm not heavily into politics, but i enjoyed movies like JFK and Malcolm X because they were much more "dramatized" type films, so it kept me watching. And to be honest, both those men were a lot more interesting than Harvey Milk seemed to be [was he named Harvey? can't remember].
It was well cast, the acting was good, especially Emile Hirsh [sp?] who was unrecognizable in his role. But the script was really weak imo, it just didn't hold my interest enough.
I'm that way with Gus Van Sants films anyway, some i really love [Elephant, Good Will Hunting], others i can;t fucking stand because they bore me to tears [Gerry, Last Days]............Milk falls into the latter.

Twilight - PG-13 Great book, shit movie. I'm surprised it's being enjoyed by so many, i found it to be poorly acted, scripted and horribly miscast in places. Kristen Davies as Bella was fucking AWFUL, what a BAD actress. Rob Pattinson was decent in the role and looked good, the casting of Jasper was hilarious and the added new scene at the end of the film with Victoria the vampire was completely left field and crap. And don;t even start me on the cheap effects. Amidst all of this, there are some nice moments, Bella and Edward at dinner, the baseball scene.....but the bad out ways the good sadly.
