Sayonara Jupiter - Unrated Japan's answer to 2010, this film is a gluttony of imagery for those who grew up with 1980's sci-fi special effects. It's overlong, with silly plotting and hilarious English dubbing. The length is stretched so afar as to make parts of the second half a bit boring. And there are the hippies. Oh, those terrorist hippies.

Enjoyably fun for those who already enjoy such things.

La morte negli occhi del gatto (Seven Deaths in the Cat's Eye) - Unrated Fun if overlong Italian whodunit with a splash of gore and a host of eccentric characters. Very much of it's time. The cat is great. November 26, 2009

Lady Snowblood - Love Song of Vengeance (Shura-yuki-hime: Urami Renga) - R More plot-heavy but somehow less compelling than its predecessor, Love Song of Vengeance utilizes a short running time to help deflect criticism. Fans of the original shouldn't be disappointed. November 22, 2009

Sharkwater - PG A counterpoint to most of the sensational shark documentaries out there, this one introduces sharks as shy and amazing. It focuses on the fishing, finning, and depopulation issues. Even the mob and Greenpeace are involved.

An interesting film for those looking for another side to sharks and our global aquatic ecosystem.

Deep Water - PG Documentary about first solo, non-stop boat race around the world. I expected a more mechanic how-they-did-it approach to the film, but instead it ended up focusing on the psychological toll it took on the sailors. It ended with a haunted chill.

Good stuff.

Tintorera: Killer Shark - Unrated I'm giving this film way more stars than it deserves. Ostensibly about a killer tiger shark, the film is an utter failure as such. It's mostly stock footage and poorly choreographed "suspense" scenes.

What made me enjoy Tintorera so much was what the film ended actually being about - a bromance, and a hilarious one at that. Every time you'd start wondering where the sharks were, a new aspect of the bromance was explored at length. It all culminates with a hysterically edited discussion where they acknowledge their feelings with their eyes.

I think you can watch the whole thing for free on YouTube, though it may not have all of the blood and nudity in that version.

The Ugly Truth - R Choppy, unbelievable romcom with Heigl playing yet another unlikable character. Overcomes some of its woes through the sheer audacity of its dialogue, which is surprisingly profane at times. November 22, 2009

Star Trek - PG-13 No need to go into detail - you've all seen it. It's better than I'd anticipated. Fun filmgoing, to be sure.

A few nitpicks instead:

- Totally botched Scotty.
- The guy playing Chekov had a hard time with the accent. It sounded too deliberate.
- "Red matter" must be the most obvious deus ex machina I've seen in some time.

Turkey Shoot (Escape 2000) - R This used to be controversial? Really?!

Another variation on The Dangerous Game, this time with overtures to Punishment Park. However, there is no one to root for, the message is heavy handed at best, and the much ballyhooed violence is fairly timid for today's audiences. Railsback and Hussey are both horribly miscast, with Railsback near hilariously so.

The best part is in the extras where some of the cast members don't mind trashing the film.

Fun in a non-thinking kind of way, but don't get your hopes up.

Miss March - R Silly, crass tripe with a couple of good laughs here and there. Nothing original. You'll want to kill Trevor Moore within a few minutes. November 22, 2009

The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 - R If you've seen any other Tony Scott film, you'll know exactly how this plays how, even if you haven't seen the original.

I will give credit to Travolta, who is uneven in the film, but shows moments of a truly fun and great performance. Hopefully he'll find the right director one day that will harness his Travoltaness.

G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra - PG-13 Not horrifying, not really good either. Makes some strange narrative choices concerning the audience they're aiming for.

But instead of discussing any of that, I'll just say that Snake Eyes shouldn't have lips. They were distracting in every scene they were in.
