Hellbent - R Did taking place amid the gay scene in Hollywood make a difference with this slasher film? No, no it didn't. It spends so much time exercising the gay angle of the film that it forgets to be a slasher. Or entertaining. Pass on it. December 19, 2009

The Hangover - R Hard to believe this comedy raked in the cash it did. There are some belly laughs sprinkled throughout, but it's overlong by at least twenty minutes. None of the main characters are particularly likable, and Galifianakis is woefully under-utilized. Worth a watch if you like crude humor, but not nearly as great as they'd have you believe. Terminator Salvation - PG-13 Meh, it's not even worth writing up at length. Blazingly mediocre, without an ounce of suspense or interest. You'd be better off rewatching the first one. December 13, 2009

Ink - Unrated As I watched the enjoyable first hour, I had a sneaky feeling that the film would be more interesting as parts and ideas than as a whole, and I was right. The journey simply didn't feel all that worth it (or even credible) during the final act.

That said, if you're going to make a low budget film that will make people notice, you could hardly do better than this. It is thought out, visually interesting, and keeps you guessing for two thirds of the film. Not that the end isn't thought out - again, I just wasn't satisfied where it went. An interesting curio. I wonder what these folks could due with a real budget.

Contamination - R No surprises here. Early 80's Italian Alien knock-off with a budget low enough to keep all of the action on the Earth. Some explosively gory special effects, some laughable dialogue, and a terrifically silly monster that's a throwback to sci-fi days of old.

Nice to hear the director own up to the film being an Alien knock-off in the extras. Rare honesty.

Dragonball Evolution - PG Why would I do this to myself you ask? Much like when I rented Beer For My Horses, the bad movie lover within me just couldn't resist. Unlike that film, however, this one didn't have any redeeming qualities. Undemanding kids who already know the "story", the intended audience admittedly, will be the only ones who enjoy this. I just kept feeling bad for Chow Yun Fat. And wondered how Emmy Rossum thought this was a good career move. It also made me glad that I didn't attend one of those high schools where all the classmates are clearly in their mid to late 20s.

Finally, if you're going to give a name to the creature who is going to bring doom down upon us all, choose something a bit more imposing than Piccolo. Man, I bet he had a rough childhood in evil villain's school.
