not too shabby a movie. It is the best of the Warner Brothers bunch. They slowly get goofier and goofier as they progress. Worth watching when it pops up on TCM. Be nice to have the four Warren William 'Perry Mason' movies in a DVD set.
There is a reason that the critics loved this film. it was terrific. A great look atca wonderful player and his struggle against discrimination, before Jackie Robinson's struggle. Must see.
I wasn't impressed when I got out of my seat at the theater. However, this movie stuck with me a bit and it got a little better in my mind as some time passed. I think it was a movie whose goals outstripped its reach. Farriga was believable as the distraught mother, but Sarsgaard was flat. Just no emotional resonance for me. And Isabelle Fuhrman was terrific as the spooky child...
I got a real kick out of this movie. Just a great thriller. Although, I was annoyed at the chopped up edited version I saw on TV. This is one of those films where it was easy to buy into the premise and (pardon the pun) go along for the ride. Matthau was terrific. I really enjoyed watching him in this movie. Alone, his presence was enough to make watching this worthwhile.
I love musicals, and I really enjoy Judy Garland's singing. Her acting is usually more than adequate and it was here. A thin plot, thin storyline on which to hang several fun song and dance numbers. The real surprise for me was Angela Lansbury who played femme fatale with a quiet panache. And why don't we have leading men that have huge toothy grins like John Hodiak anymore? A question that has too long gone unanswered.
Satirical look at Network News, that is eerily prescient today. I see bits of Fixed News, CNN, MSNBC and Rush Limbaugh in this movie. Stellar performances from Holden, Finch and Dunaway. Highly recommended.
