Battle Royale (Batoru Rowaiaru)
Unrated
I have been waiting awhile to see this..and finally...I found it at FYE..in fact it was a special edition with Battle Royale 2..Let me just say..I was not dissapointed...It was a grime and grusome tales of survival...40 school children sent to a desert island..and told..you must kill each other and only one can survive...the book was brilliant..and the movie IMO held true to the book...this was a graphic portrait of survival...the killings were endless...the story was tight and moved right along..The subtitles were easy and not hard to read or in turn watch the action..This movies easily will grab you by the throat and will not let go until the bloody end...HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!!

Black Christmas
by BrianThank God, as I'd heard, this film was MUCH better than the pathetic waste of space that was the 2006 remake.
It's not hard to enjoy this film, despite the fact that it was made 34 years ago. Yes, you have to do your best to put yourself in the shoes of a 1974 moviegoer, but it's not too hard.
It was actually creepy, and funny in parts too (intentionally). Also, I laughed at some of the fashion/style of dress (what's up with the white people 'fros?)
Much better and I wish I had seen this one first.Wrong time of the year maybe, but finally got around to seeing this. Worth a rent for sure.

Shutter
by BrianOK, this has been done before, several times...and the whole, "I see Asian dead people" isn't scary or even creepy, but...
It was still better than I thought it was going to be, and it was nice to see Joshua Jackson in a halfways mainstream film for once. I do think he's a good actor who needs a new agent.
There was a "twist" in the middle which I figured out almost right away and a twist at the end which made it cool and enough to make it worth watching the DVD.
I will say that studios either need to abandon the whole genre tho entirely, or do something to liven it up a bit. Maybe a J horror-inspired ORIGINAL non-remake film that's not totally based on dead people haunting the living...Good for fans of Joshua Jackson, or if you a fan of the genre. Otherwise, nothing too special.

The Dark Knight
by NickMy mind is still racing trying to wrap itself completely around all that happened in this film. That's what this is by the way, a serious film that Nolan has moved beyond being a "comic book movie". Take away the costumes and you could forget this is based on a comic book. This could be a new generation's Godfather, or Citizen Kane, a film that tansends the others of the genre. It reminds me most of Heat. Now it is not perfect by any means but it is revolutionary in it's approach. The faults are small... the raspy voice Bale uses for Batman is even more gravely than ever, Maggie Gyllenhaal is forgetable, Alfred the butler has too much familiararity at times, fight scenes are good, but only good because they are there to advance the story not to take center stage. This is a study in the dichotomy of humans, the good vs evil in every man. The "what would you do if...." *spoiler* The few that didn't like this are complaining that the Joker wasn't ever givin a motive for his actions and even my son mentioned this.... but he just is. Stephen King said in a recent article that the scariest villians are those who do what they do for no real reason. That is this Joker. Psychotic and sadistic because he can be. Ok so that brings us to Ledger. I was worried that beacause of his death that his performance was overblown and maybe it is a bit. But one thing I will say is that I forgot about all of that and forgot that he even was The Joker for most of the time. That doesn't happen often that I see the character and not the actor portraying him so it really is amazing. The makeup work was fantastic and parts of the story were very unexpected. There are some very cool action scenes and it does inject some dark humor which I appreciated. I need to see this again to fully take away all that there is in it and I am looking forward to doing so again!
Some movies almost live up to the hype. Amazing. See in the theatre if possible.

In Bruges
by BrianAmazingly funny in a perfectly witty way that says a big FUCK YOU to political correctness and just has a good time with itself.
Also very shocking at times, and expertly acted by Farrell and Gleeson in a way that pulled us in to their characters so well.

Get Smart
by BrianOK, I know I had originally decided I didn;t want to see this film but I changed my mind.
And it's pretty decent for what it is. Yes, there are definitely a lot of "funny parts" that just aren't funny (like what was the deal with Bill Murray in the tree?), but I did laugh enough to be mostly satisfied.
I still see Hathaway as a one-trick pony who gets parts for her looks and by playing characters with personalities so close to what I imagine is her own.
Most of you will wait for the DVD. No need to rush out.Funny enough, but nothing amazing. Wait for the DVD.

The Dark Knight
by BrianSome of you might hate me for this review, but at least read it before you string me from the rafters.
The Dark Knight delivers more than even Iron Man or The Crystal Skull could. And it makes the Incredible Hulk look like a joke. It's easily the best Batman of the franchise,
Bale makes Keaton look frumpy and Clooney Clooney look like a bad joke.
Heath Ledger's performance WAS amazing. I was amazed at how he took all of himself out of the character of the Joker and just WAS the joker.
The supporting characters also were expertly cast and did great job.
The one thing I'm not compelled to do is what I considered a lot of people's over-exaggeration/ I'm not speechless, it didn't make me cry, iy's not the best movie of all time (all of which I read in different reviews_. This, s I said, is just a slight overstatement in my opinion that makes me uncomfortable.
However, I will say that The Dark Knight delivers amazingly as the best "summer film" of this year. It's pacing is near perfect and it is totally deviod of cheesy one-liners and moments that made me cringe.
For all this, it gets five starts from mw. Because it delivers.
But it's not a masterpiece.Go see this now! Dance, monkeys, dance!

The Dark Knight
by K JOnce upon a time, Batman Begins was my all time favorite Batman movie. Not anymore... Enter The Dark Knight----PHENOMENAL!!!
It is rare that a much hyped film lives up to or surpasses that hype. TDK more than equals all the hype presented months leading up to its release. With much anticipation and high expectations, this film delivered all I wanted and more.
Plot details are best left for viewing, but if you truly listen to the dialogue in TDK, you will understand that from a comic book genre film, a masterpiece has arisen. Christopher Nolan has perfected the art of putting the comic book on screen. Jonathan Nolan has written a script which knows no boundaries.
Christian Bale is Batman. Bale captures Batman/Bruce Wayne in a way no actor before him ever could. Oldham, Morgan, and Caine reprise their respective roles from Batman Begins and add great flavor to the film. Eckhart shines as Harvey Dent and Gyllenhall is a nice replacement as Rachel Dawes. The chemistry between all the actors help Nolan create a world which works beautifully.
Heath Ledger- the Joker...WOW ... mere words cannot describe what Ledger brought to this character. The level to which Ledger took the Joker is almost incomprehensible. No comparison to those who have played the role before as it would be like comparing apples to oranges. Ledger owns the Joker, and most likely no one will ever take that ownership away. Anyone would be foolish to even attempt. Ledger's performance alone is enough reason for anyone to see this film. Will he receive an Oscar nod? He should for this is one of the most brilliant roles ever portrayed on screen.
The plot, the acting, the directing, and the cinematography are blended seamlessly in TDK. The film is easily the best film of 2008 to date. The action and drama, the darkness of the film itself all make this much, much more than a comic book adaptation. This is the must see film of the decade.Prepare yourself to be blown away.... TDK rises above any which have come before it. (Seeing this in IMAX is magnificent and highly recommended!)

Charlie Bartlett
by BrianTo me, the plot/story of Charlie Bartlett is most certainly secondary to that of Anton Yelchin's acting, and the interplay between him and Downey and Davis.
Hope Davis is inspired casting, but this film just really showcases Yelchin's acting ability.
The plot is OK, and the execution is admittedly aimed at a younger audience than I, but it's still fun to watch and will be enjoyable to a wide audience.Hey, you should really see this!
