| Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - PG-13 |
The reunion between Indy and Marion was disappointing, to say the least - definately NOT the same two people risking their lives for each other trying to rescue the Lost Ark...
There was no chemistry between Jones and Ravenwood - like two divergent souls who were never really invested in each other as living entities - just two people who's lives happened to cross paths a long time ago with no effect or emotion. There wasn't the fire and energy and conflict of love like the two had shared together in Raiders... There was too much technical focus on stand here, do this, react this way, pretend you two really love each other. Too bad more could not have been developed to really pull Indy and Marion back together like the original Indiana Jones Chronicle... Shia Labeouf was completely UNbelievable!! - Literally. His lame attempt as a Marlon Brando-esque Biker Bad Ass was so laughable and uninspiring to the point that I wanted to reach through the screen and beat the living crap out of him -- Labeouf's Henry 3 couldn't pass himself off as Indy's son if he had the DNA of a tadpole's tail to prove it. Let's hope he finds another hole and buries himself in it... Action sequences and plot lines were completely ridiculous -- a part-time professor-cum-archeologist who suddenly - in the fourth film, no less - becomes a highly decorated WW2 pilot-backslash-SOS Agent-backslash-CIA Spy with sudden Top Secret clearance to a Top-Secret Installation in the desert -- Can anyone say Tonopah?... Indy survives a ground zero nuclear detonation by hiding in a lead box that should have been incinerated -- but instead gets thrown tens of thousands of feet at high velocity and all Indy has to worry about is a little radiation... Why didn't he just go after another secret installation - the one in Washington with the Arc locked away inside? Now that would have been an interesting storyline to follow and a believeable reason for bringing Henry and Marion back into each others clutches - or talons... Indy also, miraculously, survives being strapped in front of a vacuum-sucking turbine engine intake at full thrust, gets launched across the desert at 500 MPH - coming to a dead stop with no injuries - survives being launched over a 500 foot cliff in an amphibious jeep - landing, of course, on a tree that bends and gently lowers them to the waterline - and survives, unharmed, being thrown down THREE massive waterfalls that a professional white-water rafter couldn't survive -- all too much for any faithful movie afficianado to appreciate, much-less believe... The Crystal Skull Aliens coming to life was a neat touch -- probably the one special effect worthy of note in this film. The others have all been seen before - usually to much better effect. Not a lot of originality in this one... Overall, Temple of Doom was more enjoyable to watch the second and third time around than this FX-laden experiment in futility was to swallow just the first time - at least 'Doom' was semi-believeable - or, at least, semi-enjoyable in its not-too-serious disbelief... |
