The Mist - R What happens, as the mist blankets the town and shows its horrific hand, is a slowly escalating nightmare that sacks the viewer in the gut and leaves them crushed by the climax. The Mist works fantastically as a B-horror flick, elevating the simplistic premise with engaging plays at subtext, hugely talented actors and some truly messed up creature design, throwing in some provocative (and fairly loud) social commentary to boot.

The Shape Of Things - R a stunningly provocative dissection of social manipulation in the context of romantic entanglement. despite the familiarity of that idea, trust me - you haven't seen this movie November 21, 2007

Cashback - R even though it would be ridiculously easy to place this on the shelf next to Garden State and The Rules Of Attraction, make a clever comparison of a marriage between the two, and call it a day, the Cashback critique deserves a little elaboration. while a fairly "artsy" romantic drama, the movie has some impressively inventive touches to call its own. the cinematography is downright gorgeous to behold, at times even hypnotic in the way it draws the viewer in. there are many moments in the film where its atmosphere is so immersive that it drowns out everything else in the room, sucking you into its beauty. ultimately though, that beauty is, ironically, no thicker than a sheen of oil on water much of the time. despite all the insight the story attempts to convey concerning loneliness and love, there's rarely enough real substance behind it to make its statements resonate, and this is a shame. i hate seeing potential undermined by shortsighted execution, but i can''t help but wonder what truth could have been revealed if the writer/director had spent more time fleshing out the essence of beauty rather than merely its aesthetic November 21, 2007

American Gangster - R there's something about a ridley scott film that always keeps my anticipation down. i think he's approaching spielberg territory in terms of how safe he tends to play things. that's not necessarily a knock on scott; he's a solid director with a strong sense of style and storytelling ability. there's nothing wrong with that. it just seems to me that he's grown maybe a little too comfortable with his esteemed place among modern epic directors. the last film that he truly showed some genuine creativity in was Matchstick Men; otherwise, the last ten years of his career has been taken up by dependable yet mildly sleepwalking epic dramas. American Gangster doesn't really break away from that pattern.

I'll give AG this much, it has a killer ensemble working for it: denzel, crowe, chiwetel ejiofor, cuba gooding jr, josh brolin, armand assante, john hawkes, ruby dee, common, rza, and ted levine, just to mention a handful. every scene is packed with famous and "that guy" actors, making half the enjoyment of watching the film picking out the who's who laundry list of actors and personalities. unfortunately, that creates an element of hollywood that detracts from the fascinating story that the film tries to tell. there is a ton of depth to frank lucas's story, and it is dealt with in a fair and balanced manner, so to speak. there are plenty of lucas's warts to show, and the movie doesn't apologize for them, but there's also an intriguing humanity to the kingpin that adds a new level of depth for the viewer. denzel earned his top billing for his portrayal of lucas, bringing a passion and guarded sensitivity to the role.

overall, i can't deny the ridiculous amount of talent involved in American Gangster from all angles. i can even honestly say that i liked it a lot. i just can't shake the fact that it's been a long time since ridley scott made me forget that i'm watching a movie, and with a project like this, that's the effect that was sorely needed

Gone Baby Gone - R Gone Baby Gone is one of those stealth pieces that you don't really prepare for. much like Mystic River (both movies based on Lehane novels), there's a real heaviness that weighs on the viewer long after the movie's done, which is all too rare in a time of flashy franchise pics and diluted crowd pleasers. Gone Baby Gone pulls none of its punches, uncovering one hell of a morality conflict as it progresses. many props to ben affleck. the unjustified hollywood punching bag himself, for shutting the naysayers' mouths by maintaining a suprising amount of restraint in his directorial debut, letting the gravitas of the story be all it needed to be. everything about this film was nearly pitch perfect. it's a genre piece to be sure, but it carries a hardened maturity that separates it from the average crime thriller November 17, 2007
