In the midst of the cold war, popular culture was used to promote the american military hero. Do you remember Rambo. Full Metal Jacket was reminder that War is real, it makes men scared of the real possibility of death.
This movie was controvesial in South Africa, where 18 year old white kids had to go a fight a border war for a cause that they did not believe in anymore. This is the story of non-heroic American boys heading into one of the bloodiest conflicts of the 20 century. They try to execute the war while also driven by their fears and their need to survive. This movie is so well done, you feel it, it puts you right there in the action. Only Saving Private Ryans one ups this one. |
