    Unbreakable Unbreakable
    4.0 Stars by justin
Theres that little piece of imagination in all of us, that part of our brains that wants so badly to beleive the impossible can be made possible. That if we were to just beleive in it enough, it could happen. Anything could happen. Is it just a human delusion? Or has the surface of human potential even been scraped yet?

"Unbreakable", for me, was the realisation of that piece of imagination. Like "The Craft", it presents you with our usually dull typical drudgery of everyday life, and slowly makes the reality of the impossible sink in, making it more exciting and connecting with you on a much deeper and more personal level than a typical car chase or shoot out. Because unlike a car chase or shoot out (for example), our imaginations literally coming to fruition in front of us is more than just a cheap adrenaline shot.

Sam. L is nothing like the intimitading cinematic goliath we know him as typically, but rather a twisted, sad, deluded little man. But he's also a man who has kept his mind steady and focused on that idea, that little piece of imagination that we all have, to beleive that there is something extraordinary to be had. You can see it when you hear him speak, he speaks with purpose, and when he sits motionless, you can truly see him mind deep at work.

Bruce is essentially the opposite, he plays a man who has been sucked down into lifes sad stranglehold just like the rest of us schmucks, but unbeknownst to him, he is the living realisation of that impossible fantasy. His stoney face and hard attitude make him perfect for the portrayal.

I found pretty much every aspect of Unbreakable to be really intruiging. The idea that comic book heroes are just exaggerations of regular people make it a movie with a very different angle, one that is enjoyable to those with a bit of an appetite for having a twist on the regular world.

It doesent really mater what your a fan of, heroes, comics, imaginative storytelling or Jason goddamn Voorhees (of which there is a remake being released) I highly reccomend watching Unbreakable next time you get the chance. It really shows you that even though we just do what we have to, day in day out, there is still that fantasy, that little piece of imagination floating around out there, and that out human potential, has most definately, not even been touched on yet. Very strangely touching, if a little slow, but that makes it all the more effective.

Justins Best Bit: When you see Bruce Willis step out into the night for the first time as his full, realised self, then you will probably renew that gym membership you never used, just because you were in awe of a childish fantasy being brought to life.
Unbreakable. Isnt that what we all wished we could be at some point or another?

    Underworld: Evolution Underworld: Evolution
    4.0 Stars by justin
On the inside cover of the dvd for this movie, part of a statement claims that it sports "....action sequences surpassing even those witnessed in the Matrix trilogy" This is false. The Matrix boasts the best fight sequences of modern cinema, Underworld Evolution boasts the best fight sequences between vampires and werewolves of modern cinema. The one thing Underwold does have over the Matrix is a much sexier heroine in a much sexier leather outfit with a face that doesent look like a cardboard box.

Kate Beckinsale is perfect for playing Selene. She's hauntingly beautiful and can project the perfect "icy" on the outside but with a warm gooey centre" mytique, even though that formula has been used a zillion times, only here have I noticed it as really visually apparant, and its great.

Werewolves have had a pretty rough trot in the history of cinema, and a favorite method of bringing them to life seems to be a guy in a suit. The first Underworld maybe focusedthe camera on the Lycans for a tad too long, and as a result, their clunky, geriatric nature as anamatronic dolls was revealed. Here, howerver, the Lycans move much more fluidly, and are blended with CGI to allow them more breathing room to eat someones face off (one of them really eats someones face off! Yay!).

In fact, the entire movie seems to run smoother than the first, its no longer just a case of "this scene in this area" Completely different scene in completely different area" and so forth. Its much less blocky and makes well oiled scene transitions.

The love interest, for me, kind of screwed it though. there must be a trend in Hollywood of just not bothering to work on a few more action scenes (think along the lines of the Blade movies, no love interest WHATSOEVER and still good) or be creative and think about what they could do with 2 hours run time."Maybe in this scene we could have something that gives a new fresh perspective on these genres we havent seen yet? "Nah, just do what we always do and slap up a love interest scenario. Better whack a shot of cleavage in there too".

Dont get me wrong, I love cleavage as much as the next normal male, but Im pretty damn sick of something that could ONLY be ruined by a love scenario, being ruined by a love scenario.

The Hybrid in this movie also looks a little more fudged up than he did at the end of the Underworld, looking less like a twitching, angry, dark super mutant and more like one of the pshycos from "The Hills Have Eyes". He looks like they were halfway designing him and they just said "bugger it thatll do". Having said that, its still the hybrid scenes that take the biggest slice of action cake.

Underworld Evolution may not have a whole lot to bring to the table when it comes to thinking of radically new ideas, or when it comes to a particularly good aim during a sex scene (bellybutton penetration anyone?) but its slick, violent, visceral, dark, sexy and very shiny to look at.

Justins Best Bit: Spinning helicopter rotors are such a bother, best stop them by flinging your enemy into them. (Also for those who are aware of the "OK enough not to deserve the butchering they got by Uwe Boll" Bloodrayne games, you will agree with me that Rayne and Selene need to have some sort of crossover.)
Theres guns. Violence. Werewolves. Vampires. Leather clad heroine. Not the worst combination in the world.

Kung Fu Hustle....what the hell do I do with you?

This is one martial arts movie stranger
than porn backwards. theres a paper thin storyline to masquerade as the plot, which makes the way for the most retarded martial arts ever witnessed.

I found this to be a hell of alot of fun to watch because while watching it, its almost as if it is completely unaware that its making a total mockery out of the Kung Fu movies of old.

Its just completely silly through and through, therefore, never dull. This has to be one of the least dull movies I've ever seen. There are moments of genuinely funny humor that would be at home on "Whos Line Is It Anyway" (YouTube it). The knife throwing scene in particular fits quite well.

To further its strangeness, Kung Fu Hustle includes a bizzare Loony Tunes-esque *blur of legs* chase scene between the useless (and a bit of an arsehole) hero and the entertainingly surley landlady. This is made possible because all the characters have super awesome powers. Why? I dunno. They just do. The landlady can scream down a house like the big bad wolf. Yes really.

There is not a total lack of respect for actualy choreography however. The fight scenes, although crazy, are precise, well constructed and beautifully executed. The cinematography is also something to behold and is particulary evident in the musician scene, in which a pair of musicians skillfully play some kind of big cello that flings swords and ghosts at you. Yeah its weird, but its so colourful and sounds so wonderful that you will enjoy yourself regardless.

At no point does this movie ever take itself too seriously. Its a colourful, trippy, extravaganza of martial arts, Loony Tunes, weirdness, wackiness and good times for all. Long live the Toad Man (yes there is a toad man).

Justins Best Bit: The gong of Justins Best Bit goes to the musician scene. It packs in everything thats great about the movie into about six minutes of pure anti-boredom.
Kung Fu Hustle has not a single moment of dullness and comes reccommended whether your bored, sad, unimaginitive or enjoy getting high while watching stuff.
