Eraserhead (1977, Unrated)
One of the greatest. A lot of the stylish and atmospheric moments in this film have been revisited by Lynch again and again, but never quite as well as it was in this film. Jack Nance is excellent as the acidhead's version of an everyman and the story about the fear of parenthood (fatherhood specifically) can be understood by everyone, despite it's surrealness. A masterpiece in low budget filmmaking and the start of a great director. |

The Happiness of the Katakuris (2001, R)
One of the few films that have changed my life. Such a nice movie, despite being demented, really focuses on what's important in life. Being happy and making those who are close to you (eg. family) as happy as possible as well. Such a simple concept, but this movie pulls it off spectacularly. The Quiet Family is great, but I like this one even more. |

Dellamorte Dellamore (Cemetery Man) (Demons '95) (Of Death, of Love) (1996, R)
One of the best horror comedies of all time. As if Tim Burton, George Romero and Takashi Miike collaborated on one film. Rupert Evert is amazing and really pulls off the character well. I've read Dylan Dog and this seems to be a really loose adaption of that comic book. Can't say enough good things about this one. |

Frailty (2002, R)
Watching this film it's hard to believe it's done by a first time director (not including Fish Heads of course). It's such a great film on so many levels, a perfect horror film, psychological drama and one of the best and most controversial twists in recent memory. Also, it's one of the few movies that you can watch over again, knowing all the surprises, and it's like watching a whole other film. I think this movie scared a lot of critics, not that they gave it bad reviews, but they misunderstood it, I think intentionally, so they didn't hate the ideas behind it. A brilliant film. |

The Ninth Configuration (Twinkle, Twinkle, Killer Kane) (1980, R)
Willaim Peter Blatty's masterpiece, one of the few movies that are better than the source novel. Great performances from the ensemble cast and a superb screenplay with heavy doses of amazing dialogue and philosophical debates about "Shoes" existance make this one of the greats. Watch with Bad Lieutenant for a spiritual movie mania! |

Funny Games (1998, Unrated)
Another movie that assaults the audience. Heneke knows what the audience expects in a suspense/horror film, and does his damndest to disappoint. Yet, despite his efforts to be a intellegent, shove your love of cinematic violence in your face, movie, it still works on a mainstream suspense level, minus a few surreal moments. An intense film. |

Naisu no mori: The First Contact (Funky Forest: The First Contact) (2005, Unrated)
Saw this one at the Toronto After Dark Film Festival and it ranks up there along with Schizopolis and a midnight showing of Army of Darkness as my favourite theater experience. Surreal, hilarious, stylish and lots of fun, this is a perfect cult film with lots of opportunity for audience interaction. As always Tadanobu Asano and Susumu Terajima (who is quickly becoming one of my favourite actors) were excellent. |
