The Third Man
Unrated
This is my favorite black & white movie. It takes place in my favorite European City: Vienna. About a man who's found dead and 2 people claimed he was accidentally killed by a truck..but a "third man" did not also confirm this. The Third Man ends up being the person who was thought to be dead in the first place: Harry Lime: played by a young, witty Orsen Welles. Anyways Harry Lime's old buddy, some American writer came to visit him and fall's in love with Lime's main squeeze...forgot her name (but I'm in love with her too). Anyways, the movie is a great story, about a very important time in Austrian history and filmed appropriately just when Vienna got freedom from Russia. I had no idea, that Vienna, like Berlin was partially under Soviet control for 10 years after WWII. There are also some surreal scenes that are powerful. Especially the crazy scene with a parrot...it was creepy in a Hitchcockian sense.
Just a very touching movie. The music of Madredeus is wonderfully captured. Teresa Salegueiro is utterly charming playing the role of herself. The ending is beautiful, in particular, the tape recording muse from the soundman to his idealistic movie director friend who has become disillusioned by the film making process. It's slow in developing, but because of that, you really get into the souls of the character's. The old portuguese silent movie director's aria about life and film was also powerful.
