Ha. That's probably that exact type of movie we're talking about. It looked pretty interesting at first, and a lot of people loved it, but I was miserable by the end due to boredom. Then again, we all have different tastes.

I was thinking about renting 8 1/2, but I think I'll stick to movies that sound interesting to me, rather than seeing ones just because how highly rated they are.

I was pretty generous with my 2 stars too. It was until the VERY end that I found any value to the movie. I guess I can interpret the movie as poaching that goes on, as in people trying to take other people's lovers away (maybe some reference with the hunting scenes). I guess that's what I got out of it. Still, the movie felt very uninvolving with the characters with hardly any development or coherent plot. I almost turned it off half way, but finished it and got at least some redeeming value.

I agree with that and I would rate "Paths of Glory" a hair higher than "FMJ". It's more powerful with it's anti-war message, and really makes you angry about how the soldiers were treated, while "FMJ" had a touch of dark humor and satire. They are both very good in my opinion.

Read your "Full Metal Jacket" review and just wanted to weigh in a little. What I got out of it, was that A) Every man has his breaking point and B) The movie shows how the ordinary people can be turned into ruthless killing machines. I know the second half has been bashed by many, me included, but I think it makes sense thematically.

It seems like people buy the hype and haphazardly rate any new movie they enjoyed as 10/10. I sometimes can't take that site seriously, especially when stupid comedies (i.e. "Superbad" and "Knocked Up") reach the top 250. The older movies seem to be rated more accordingly however. Rottentomatoes is the most reliable rating site I look at, mostly because it's done by critics.

Yeah, it's been number 1 for a couple days. Just a product of extreme hype and bandwagoning fans who can't put things in perspective. I've seen so many greats that have raised the bar. Movies like "North by Northwest", "12 Angry Men", "Goodfellas", and MANY more are masterpieces..."The Dark Knight" is NOT in my opinion, although it does feature a great performance by Heath Ledger.

Definitely in my top 10, if not higher. I like to think about this movie right now, after seeing the over-hyped "Dark Knight", which was good, but when I compare it to movies like "12 Angry Men" it eats its dust.

I have yet to see "The Maltese Falcon" but Bogart is always good. If you like Film-Noir than you should also check out "Touch of Evil" and "The Third Man".

For a really reliable, non MTV generation like movie list, check this out:

It wasn't one I was really eager to see, but my brother and sister both loved it and recommended it. I can see why people would love it, because it is still well made, just not exactly my bag I guess.

Good reviews so far. I was pretty disappointed in "Notorious" also, because like you wrote, it starts WAY too slowly. The last half is much better though thankfully.

"The Shining" is indeed a very good horror movie. I saw it when I was pretty young, and that ghost lady in the tub scared me good. In fact, just the shot of the door was scary. Other good horror movies : "The Exorcist", "Texas Chainsaw Massacre", and "Suspiria".

I think it's time to remake the "Lord of the Rings" Trilogy too. It's been like 4 years now...think of what they could do with today's technology! About remaking "Casablanca" they kind of did :

It's about a couple who are trying to get out of war-torn country with the help of a former lover. But it takes place in Germany instead.
