My Favorite Movies

  cholerymorbilus's Rating My Rating
1
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968,  G)
2001: A Space Odyssey
A profound movie, revolutionary in its time and still as powerful as a film can be (especially if screened at the Imax).
2
Rescue Dawn (2007,  PG-13)
Rescue Dawn
One of the best Herzog films in a long time-- glad he finally got it made.
3
There Will Be Blood (2007,  R)
There Will Be Blood
One of the best period pieces-- probably ever. P.T. Anderson paces and frames the film with almost Kubrickian consideration.
4
Inland Empire (2006,  R)
Inland Empire
A great step for Lynch, it almost didn't feel like a movie. I was extremely excited that he used The Rabbits.
5
Lunacy (2006,  G)
Lunacy
My favorite Jan Svankmajer movie is every new Jan Svankmajer movie.
6
The Cameraman (1928,  Unrated)
The Cameraman
A wonderful culmination of Keaton's independent style combined with the bigger budget of a studio. Don't miss the chance to see it with an audience and live pianist if possible.
7
M (1931,  Unrated)
8
Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980,  PG)
9
Le Procès (The Trial) (1962,  Unrated)
10
Punch-Drunk Love (2002,  R)
11
Fitzcarraldo (1982,  PG)
Fitzcarraldo
Great Herzog movie about a guy with no money who drives a boat over a mountain, during which a guy with no money drives a boat over a mountain.
12
Apocalypse Now (1979,  R)
13
Raging Bull (1980,  R)
14
The Godfather (1972,  R)
15
Pee-wee's Big Adventure (1985,  PG)
16
Giulietta degli Spiriti (Juliet of the Spirits) (1965,  Unrated)
Giulietta degli Spiriti (Juliet of the Spirits)
Incredible as Fellini's first color film, and I believe that LSD inspired Fellini to use color, however one shouldn't confuse Fellini's brilliance with pure psychedelics.
17
Twin Peaks - Fire Walk with Me (,  R)
18
La Cité des Enfants Perdus (The City of Lost Children) (1995,  R)
19
Jason and the Argonauts (1963,  G)
20
Blade Runner (1982,  R)
21
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004,  R)
22
The Testament Of Dr. Mabuse (1933,  Unrated)
23
Brazil (1985,  R)
24
Freaks (1932,  Unrated)
25
Edward Scissorhands (1990,  PG-13)
26
Metropolis (1927,  Unrated)
27
Frankenstein (1931,  Unrated)
Frankenstein
This IS Frankenstein; Mary Shelly's novel was valuable as far as it contributed to this film.
28
Testament of Orpheus (1960,  Unrated)
Testament of Orpheus
Actually my favorite of the Orphic trilogoy; definately one of Cocteau's most unpretentious and casually introspective films.
29
A Clockwork Orange (1971,  R)
30
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937,  G)
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
Miyazaki is the only director to rival the precedent of stop motion craftsmanship and poignant storytelling set by this film.
31
Barton Fink (1991,  R)
32
King Kong (1933,  Unrated)
King Kong
The remake was enjoyable as an homage, but for me this is a far more emotional and profound experience.
33
The Dark Crystal (1982,  PG)
34
Eraserhead (1977,  Unrated)
35
The Shining (1980,  R)
The Shining
Name a scarier/better horror movie than this and the Exorcist. If you do, you're wrong.
36
Miller's Crossing (1990,  R)
37
The Exorcist (1973,  R)
38
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978,  PG)
Invasion of the Body Snatchers
More powerful than the original (and probably the new remake).
39
Duck Soup (1933,  Unrated)
40
Even Dwarfs Started Small (1970,  Unrated)
41
The Graduate (1967,  PG)
42
Maniac (Sex Maniac) (1934,  Unrated)
Maniac (Sex Maniac)
Very difficult to rate; a poor movie on every count, but somehow full of wonderful scenes and ideas. It has an unwholesome aura about it (also, I believe a cat was actually de-eyed in front of the camera).
43
Iron Man (2008,  PG-13)
Iron Man
I considered this the best superhero movie yet until a few days ago (ahem), but it's very strong on a number of fronts. Great action, visuals, character design-- but there are also some brains in there with interesting characterization, political commentary,
44
What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1960,  Unrated)
45
The Incredibles (2004,  PG)
46
The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951,  G)
47
Forbidden Planet (1956,  G)
48
War of the Worlds (2005,  PG-13)
War of the Worlds
Great science fiction, eons beyond the original, and surprisingly realistic for Speilberg (also, Cruise did a great job, who cares what his religion is?).
49
Psycho (1960,  R)
50
Watchmen (2009,  R)
Watchmen
Very pleased, I honestly didn't know how this thing would work on film, and I was very surprised at the translation; I think Snyder did it as well as it could be done. For the uninitiated, it will be a creepy, weird epic-- and hopefully a cue to filmmakers that audiences can handle things that are complicated, controversial, and not explained to death. For fans Snyder really got everything in there that we needed him to, and it rarely felt rushed. I also loved the use of familiar music to remind us that these fantastical things were happening in the 'real' world (made explicit in the comic), and the dark cinematography reminded me of great 80s noir like Jacob's Ladder, Angel Heart, and of course Blade Runner (which I assume was intentional). Good effort!
