I considered this the best superhero movie yet until a few days ago (ahem), but it's very strong on a number of fronts. Great action, visuals, character design-- but there are also some brains in there with interesting characterization, political commentary,
Very pleased, I honestly didn't know how this thing would work on film, and I was very surprised at the translation; I think Snyder did it as well as it could be done. For the uninitiated, it will be a creepy, weird epic-- and hopefully a cue to filmmakers that audiences can handle things that are complicated, controversial, and not explained to death. For fans Snyder really got everything in there that we needed him to, and it rarely felt rushed. I also loved the use of familiar music to remind us that these fantastical things were happening in the 'real' world (made explicit in the comic), and the dark cinematography reminded me of great 80s noir like Jacob's Ladder, Angel Heart, and of course Blade Runner (which I assume was intentional). Good effort!
I'm sure this movie is so wonderful that it should be loaded onto planes and dropped in care packages over third world countries. That's what this troubled planet needs: "sex and the city: the movie."
