J's Favorite Movies
Chasing Amy
R
A young man pursues a lesbian. Their joining conflicts his relationship with his best friend. I like Kevin Smith movies, even the bad ones, because he examines simple life in a complex way. He takes every day situations and analyzes and discusses what's happening. Not like straight dudes convert lipstick lesbians on a daily basis, but the events surrounding are quite normal. I guess superficially its a chick flick, love story. But the conversations are interesting on a deeper level (and sometimes funny as shit). Like when Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs discussed tipping waitresses, Alyssa and Holden orally unpack and analyze relationship dynamics. The scene where Holden professes his love to Alyssa is one of my all time favorite scenes of any movie evar. Its romantic and crushing and dramatic, complete with rain and thunder. I know this movie like the back of my hand up until the, maybe last third of the movie. I have to stop watching when it gets too emotional and tragic. I just sympathize with the characters too much. I've watching this movies a million times. But hardly to completion. Kevin Smith was dating Joey Lauren Adams when he wrote this. I really like Adams and Jason Lee. And why does everyone hate Ben Affleck so much?
