Orfeu Negro (Black Orpheus)
PG
Black Orpheus was my introduction to international film at the age of five. Thank you Mom! Marpessa Dawn (Eurydice) was one of the most enchantingly beautiful people I have ever seen. Her portrayal of Eurydice in this modern adaptation of the Greek myth is superb. Bruno Mello delivers an equally stunning performance as Orfeu. The organic brazilian back drop coupled with the constant sound of carnival is awe inspiring. Black Orpheus is easily on of my favorite films of all times!!! This movie is definately a must see for fans of international classics! Thank you for this one Marcel Camus!
Carmen Jones
Unrated
I first saw Carmen Jones at age 9 and have been in love with this film every since! Dorothy Dandrige and Harry Belofonte provide outstanding performances in this black adaptation of the origional film, Carmen. Dandrige's portrayal of Carmen exceeds even the highest expectations. Carmen is a free spirited jook womyn of sorts who you will hate and have pity for at the same time. Joe's (Belofonte) decent into obsession with Carmen makes a smooth progression and you will be shocked by this gentle characcter's dark side by the end of the film. Extra treats include cameo appearances by Diahnne Carrol and Pearl Bailey! Definately a must see for classic musical lover's!
