Vertigo (1958,  PG)
Vertigo 5.0 Stars
After watching "Vertigo" a couple of times, I think it's official: it's my new all-time favorite movie. Maybe it ties with my former all-time favorite, but, damn! - I just love this film way too much.

2001: A Space Odyssey 5.0 Stars
A film combining Classical music, futuristic concepts and the evolution of man could only be impeccable under the direction of Kubrick. Zero out of one hundred people will understand the ending.

The Evil Dead (1981,  NC-17)
The Evil Dead 3.5 Stars
Classic sanguineous Cabin fever-esque horror film that was quite the controversy in its day. Even though the storyline is simple - The unleashing of malignant, possessive spirits due to an Egyptian enchantment - it manages to affect an entire genre. Pure fun for me. :D

Diabolique (Les Diaboliques) 4.5 Stars
Among the best thrillers I've seen, "Les Diaboliques" is an excellent guilt-filled mystery bound to satisfy all with its clever, heart-pounding conclusion. I adored every suspenseful minute it offered and I'm confident that you will too.

The Thing (1982,  R)
The Thing 4.5 Stars
After the interaction of an alien species is discovered in Antarctica, a mimicking, homicidal horror hides amongst a crew of researching men, making the isolated continent a deadlier residence. "The Thing" is one of the most excellent and paranoid horror films I've seen. The more that I think about this film in retrospect, the better it gets. That is THE greatest impact a horror film can have on a nightmareless movie watcher.

Memento (2000,  R)
Memento 5.0 Stars
A film created backwards so that you perceive what the character has to go through (And so that the audience can, ironically, keep guessing the ending). With its concept taken to the utmost extreme, this film's short and constant action sequences - due to the protagonist's ailment - take you on a real experience like no other, which will leave the majority in ponderous thought and the minority in awe. A thinker's film that you will, grantedly, never forget.

Cache (Hidden) (2005,  R)
Cache (Hidden) 4.5 Stars
I suppose I'm in the minority when I say that I liked "Cache." Haneke upsets the majority immensely here and seems like the biggest, most pretentious asshole director ever. It's not only the excessive ambiguity that causes such hatred, but the manner in which the directing had to take place. Artsy and very technical directing, yes: Haneke perfectly captures the stalker/voyeur and frustrations are sparked even more.

Overall collaboration aside, "Cache" has two of my favorite actors acting horribly, in that they lack chemistry. Haneke (or whomever) focused on the abstruseness too much. The malleable characters in here are placed without them having a purpose, unlike in "La Pianiste," where Haneke aced all areas - especially the character development. Seemingly a minor flaw, this vexation costs the film too much, at times, slowing the pace atrociously. But not all films are entirely dependent of acting. It would've been nice if this one was properly balanced, but it goes to show that its other areas are potent.

So, if you're prepared to be mind*****d in a unique style, and are patient enough, watch "Cache." Props, too, to the parts that visually disturbed the audience. Reality is what I ask from every film. Though, it's sort of anti-PETA.

I sayeth to thou, as a tribute, watcheth the Abrahamic Faith epic, for it remindeth of Heston's legendary filmography and since its pious contents could excite no more every time the Laws of Physics are to be defied.

Irreversible (2002,  Unrated)
Irreversible 4.5 Stars
I've been anticipating this one for quite some time now, and boy did it deliver. "Irreversible" is one of the few movies that offers highly controversial matters with nearly perfect executions; practically everything in this film has a purpose and is handled expertly.

Obviously an Existentialist film, dualities are scattered abroad and are often discussed in the dialogue: The decision-making, the philosophical books, and even a "2001" reference - neat-o!

But back to the part that causes people to faint and stuff: The extremely graphic portions. "Irreversible" has one of the most up-close feelings I've had in a movie since the last 3-D film that I watched. Visceral movements with the camera and some mighty fine transitions help make this possible, especially during the first quarter, where red lights flutter like crazy (Also might wanna mention the great tactic used in the underground club: Darkness and dim colors concealing the CGI). Furthermore, there's all sorts of sex, blood, gore.... but you already knew that, right?

"Irreversible" is somewhat similar to "Memento" with the reverse chronology, but is still original. Any negative reviews on this would pertain to the intensity so don't let that discourage you from watching this masterpiece.

Takashi Miike's talent is evident with "Audition:" the deceitfully wonderful anti-cliche horror that accumulates the audience's fear and knocks it dead in the second act.

I first watched "Ninja Scroll" with a tongue-in-cheek attitude and ultimately felt impressed at its potential. An average story but the adventurous conflicts make it all the better. Seriously.
