This movie freaked me out because I'm a very paranoid person who thinks technology will literally take over us one day. Though most plot elements from 9 have appeared in countless other movies, it manages to be refreshing thanks to its avan-garde animation (the serpent-like thing scared the shit out of me!), characters you want to root for and action scenes that really get you worked up.

I knew next to nothing about this movie before watching it and was completely surprised at how much it moved me. Both main characters are loneliness personified and it's very touching and intriguing to see how their paths cross. It has a very genuine humanity to it.

Brilliant film. Ballast is a subdued and poetic examination of the effects of a suicide on three people in the Mississippi Delta. This is such a humanistic piece of work by Lance Hammer and his cast of nonactors.it was released last year playing on the festival circuits but got no wide release. Look for it on DVD. One of the best films I've seen this year.

    Audrey Hepburn is RADIANT!
Breakfast at Tiffany's Breakfast at Tiffany's
    by Mark
A radiant Audrey Hepburn highlights this adaptation of the Truman Capote novella about a carefree woman who cannot commit to anyone or anything. She can't even bring herself to name her cat. Indeed it is a tribute to Audrey Hepburn's talent that she can make this shallow, chain smoking, shoplifting, gold digging drunk, so utterly charming. There is real vulnerability here. Nevertheless, this light, frothy flight of fancy is extremely overrated and awfully dated (Mickey Rooney's exaggerated performance is an embarrassment). However, the vividly eccentric characters and the luxurious style of it all, is captivating.

Of course I never send out recommendations but "never say never" is a motto to live by and so we make exceptions when necessity dictates. And it does here. Not everyone will get Bright Star - I'm certain of that it. But give it a chance and some of you might be pleasantly surprised.
    I was.
    Bright Star Bright Star
    by William
I find it hard to talk about this one without it bringing a lump to my throat.
This kind of achingly beautiful and unashamedly romantic tale is deeply unfashionable now and it's such a crying shame. Campion has surely bested herself here with this subtle and divinely lyrical love poem - so making 'The Piano' feel almost like galumphing over-ripe melodrama in comparison.
I'm sure that much of today's impatient audience will be snoring into their popcorn at Campion's leisurely and smoldering drip drip pace. And the long scene's of poetry reading (it's no mean feat to read poetry with emotional conviction so Whishaw and Cornish should be cherished for sure), the quiet and often silent moments heavy with bated breath and the melancholy longueurs of love unrequited will sorely test the patience of many.
But us hopeless romantics will (quietly) cheer and find rich rewards. Bright Star has a precious, almost nameless, quality that will linger in your heart and consciousness long after it's utterly sublime credit sequence has faded and I really do pity those that don't fall under its mesmerising spell.
    Exquisite.

Enjoyable holiday treat is a 3D feast for the eyes.
    Disney's A Christmas Carol Disney's A Christmas Carol
    by Mark
Gorgeous adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic is a 3D feast for the eyes. This slavishly faithful interpretation, is highlighted by effects so extraordinary, there are moments where it literally looks as if snow is falling in the theater. As recounted here, the story really takes its time and exhibits a dark moodiness, especially in the early scenes. In other parts, there are nightmarish images that are rather jolting for a PG rated film. Consequently, the film will please adults much more than it will entertain young children. However, for those that are patient, this atmospheric version of the classic tale is an enjoyable holiday treat.

The 1939 film is better, but this is good too. Just has some flaws.

Of Mice and Men Of Mice and Men
    by Ross
This is a good, enjoyable adaption of Steinbeck's timeless novel but doesn't quite compare to the first adaption, Lewis Milestone's 1939 film.

The most obvious reason why is because it is changed and not nessesarily for the best. Key moments are messed with or moved around in structural terms, or even skipped altogether (although that rarely happens). I don't like certain ways the novel was adapted here and it seemed somewhat incomplete on several occasions.

Another reason was the portrayal of Lennie by John Malkovich. Malkaovich plays the character extremely well but he is not the Lennie I (and I expect others), envisioned. His voice is higher, he is quiter and he is played as if he is medically mentally ill and not just slow and childlike. It was disappointing to see the charcter played like this but as a performance alone, Malkovich was magnificent. However, George was given an accurate portrayal by Gary Sinise. He gives a driven performance but the emotion is less prominant that in Burgess Meredith's performance, especially in the final, tragic scene, where I just didn't feel as much as I did when I watched the 1939 version.

Although there are these bad parts, and they do hinder it, there are many fantastic factors to mention too. It is directed well by Sinise (although I think the final scene could have been made to have a better impact), the score adds a bitter sweet atmosphere and the cinematography is glorious. I also like the little addition after the saddening climax, it works wonderfully well.

As a whole, if you want to see a faithful adaption of the novel, watch the superior 1939 version but do watch this aswell, as it is still a very good film.

An almost flawless adaption of the great book.
Also shocked that no one in my friends list (although that list is small) have seen this. If you love the book, you will not be disappointed with this as it is mostly faithful.

Of Mice and Men Of Mice and Men
    by Ross
A classic film based on the classic novel of the same name. Brilliantly faithful, from the dialogue right down to the very small details Steinbeck meticulously wrote. Yes, there are some changes but these were essential for the transition from book to screen.

Firstly, Lon Chaney Jr. is the best Lennie you could possibly ask for. He plays him exactly how I imagined the character in the book. A gentle giant with scary capabilties, a deep, dumb tone of voice and a child-like aura surrounding him. Burgess Meredith as George, his short, weaker but saner copnaion is played with great emotion and is pretty much how I pictured him in the novel.

Beautiful, artistic directon by Lewis Milestone captures the essenece of the book because it avoids ommiting too much of Steinbeck's vital poetic devices needed to carry the story.

The screenplay is extremely faithful in terms of pacing and actual worded content. The structure isn't messed up and what remains is basically the book in film form, which is fantastic to view.

This film was up for best picture but obviously stood no chance against Mr. Smith Goes To Washington, The Wizard Of Oz and of course, Gone With The Wind. However, the nomination itself proves the importance and greatness of this film and it is definately one I urge you all to see.

See No Evil, Hear No Evil See No Evil, Hear No Evil
    by Ross
Madcap 80's film. Comic genius pulled off brilliantly by two great comediens.

Well made and even better acted, See No Evil, Hear No Evil may not be a staple of the 80's comedy trend but it certainly is a genre great.

Gene Wilder, perfectly chosen as deaf guy Dave and Richard Pryor, perfectly chosen as blind guy Wally, bumble around on screen in a variety of funny and at times, touching ways. Gene Wilder is at his mad, tempormental and eccentric best whilst Richard Pryor plays the blind guy like a proper method actor, just turning it into comic gold instead. He mixed with blind people and trained himself to not even blink in his scenes. Amazing acting right there, to accompany his fantastic, witty delivery.

Directed well with nice pacing, See No Evil is non stop action and comedy at its most entertaining. Well written, with a great supporting cast (Kevin Spacey as a cold villain!!), See No Evil pulls all the punches, with a little help of Dave and his clock directions!
