Avatar - PG-13 Man, do I feel lucky to be alive in a time like this. A time when James Cameron is back on top of his game, and when the magic of special effects and CGI have become as breath-takingly flawless as it is. And breath-taking is truly the word here. Because not only is Avatar a fantastic sci-fi film, but it's taken movies in general to a whole new level, far beyond everything we've previously seen. The CGI looks so real that you can almost touch it (especially in 3D), and it's hard to believe that Pandora and its inhabitants were all made in a bunch of computers. That's just how amazing this movie looks.

My only complaint concerns the story and some of the dialogue, as its highly predictable and quite thin. Most of the plot events feel very familiar, and is unfortunately rife with clichés and stereotypes. It's a pity, because it dragged down the overall experience a bit. Even so, it's still an amazing movie, that had me drop my jaw more than a few times. And to give you an idea of just how awesome it really is, I've here gathered some of the titles it deserves to be awarded with:

* Best movie of 2009

* Best CGI effects of all-time

* One of my top 100 favourite movies

* Most realistic animation ever created

* One of the greatest sci-fi films ever made

The bottomline is: this is no ordinary cinematic experience. It's a mindblowing and emotional thrill ride, that'll take you to a place beyond your wildest dreams. A visual masterpiece, that truly leaves you lost for words.

Law Abiding Citizen - R Cleverly plotted and well-paced thriller, with an intelligent script and intriguing turn of events. Initially, I thought this would be like any other revenge story. I mean, how many times haven't we seen movies about a man's family being murdered, followed by him going on a personal quest for revenge? It may start out that way, but once I got a little more into it, I was surprised to find that it has some innovative elements. Because I can't really recall anything that reminded of it. The only beef I have with the film is that it's not very believable. Some character actions and plot events are a bit preposterous, and it stretches credibility a whole lot in its aims to be exciting. Despite said drawback, however, its a good movie all in all, that held my attention throughout. Certainly one of the best in the genre that I've seen this year. December 18, 2009

Saw VI - R They must be going for a record here with the number of sequels in this franchise. And I'm amazed that they still keep such solid quality. Because altough they fail to go beyond mediocracy, I haven't seen a Saw movie so far I didn't like. As goes for this sixth installment, which contrary to my expectations, was a pretty good watch. So as long they don't sink the below the bar, I'm all for seeing a continuation of the series. December 18, 2009

Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian - PG Short of spectacular, but pretty good for a sequel to a mediocre family flick. Ben Stiller is his usual bland and lifeless self, and could easily have been replaced with any other actor. Not that he's bad or anything, but he just never seems to give much of an effort in what he does. Good thing this film has a nice supporting cast though, who do their best with a less-than-impressive script. I'm mainly refering to Robin Williams here, who can take the most dull and silly of material and turn it into something funny. Even so, his charismatic presence isn't enough to keep this film from the "average pile". Sure, it has its moments, and yeah it's fairly entertaining, but out of a 100 gags, there's maybe only 2-3 that got my smile muscles going. And even when they did, it only got a chuckle out of me at best. Overall, however, I thought it was slightly better than the first film. Mainly due to the entertainment value, which was a little higher this time around. December 16, 2009

The Spongebob Squarepants Movie - PG Truth be told, I haven't always been a fan of Spongebob. I had heard a lot about the show before, but dismissed it as a weird-looking Nikelodeon product made solely for kids. Not until now, when I took the time to watch some whole episodes (as well as this movie), did I discover and understand why everyone likes it so much. And boy, did it teach me a lesson in not judging something beforehand. Because the more I saw, the more I fell in love with its characters. Not since the golden days of The Simpsons during the 90's, have I enjoyed watching an animated series so much. And I'm happy to say that it was just as great in this larger format. A really enjoyable watch, full of fun and adventure. So if this doesn't put a smile on your face, I regret to inform that you're as humorless as Squidward ;-) December 14, 2009

Felon - R This is a great example of how a movie can be amazingly captivating, and ascend to impressive heights, without as much as a single explosion, car chase or CGI effect. The story is very reminiscent of The Shawshank Redemption, only more violent, gritty and realistic. Most of the actors (apart from Val Kilmer, who here gives one of his best-ever performances) are quite unknown, but I thought that worked in the movie's favor, as it added to the authenticity factor. It's just boggles me how a film as brilliant as this one has received so little notice and publicity. I had never heard of it myself, up until about a week ago when I was recommended to see it. And I certainly don't regret that I did. Because this is, without question, one of the best prison flicks I've ever seen. Incredibly engaging and riveting, and with a ending that was both believable and satisfying. November 28, 2009

Zombieland - R Coolest zombie movie ever! Altough Dawn of the Dead from 2004 is still my #1 favourite, this comes at a very close second and is certainly the best one in the comedy subgenre of zombie flicks. What makes it such a winner, is primarily the entertainment value. It's funny, action-packed and stylishly directed. Something out of the ordinary, yet still within familiar zombie territory. As for the cast, it couldn't have been much better than it was. I haven't seen Woody Harrelson in any comedies in a while, so it was great to see him back in the spotlight again. But the true highlight of this film, has got to be the cameo by Bill Murray. It was hilarious to say the least, and the funniest thing he's done since Kingpin in 1996. All things put together, the end result is a highly enjoyable movie experience. One of my absolute favourite comedies of the year. November 28, 2009

Gamer - R Why waste great actors like Gerard Butler and Michael C. Hall on such poor of a story? It's nothing less than an insult to their talent. They must be needing that third house and fifth porsche really badly, because I doubt I'd hear any of them say they did it for the love of the script. The plot (altough pretty cool on a conceptual level) is thinner than a pancake and preposterous enough to have you roll your eyes. Other words I could use for this film are "bizarre" and "disturbing". I'm not gonna go into why, as I don't wanna waste any more time than I already have on it, but let's just say that it added a lot to the negative side. The only thing that made it endurable to watch was the nice amount of action. Well, that and all the hot girls hanging out in the background ;-) November 28, 2009

9 - PG-13 Pinocchio meets Terminator in this well-animated, but rather mediocre CGI flick. You'd think a movie produced by a creative genius like Tim Burton would be really amazing, but it seems his contribution to this has been meagre in reality. An advertisting trick, to lure more people into watching it. Because altough you can sense his influence visually, the script sadly leaves a lot to desire. The dialogue is bland and the characters pretty soulless (which is ironic indeed, as they're supposed to be an anti-thesis to the robots, with their human values and emotions). Consequently, it failed to engage me. Fairly entertaining on the whole, but ultimately quite forgettable. November 23, 2009

Inglourious Basterds - R Brutal, bad-ass and superbly directed! A WWII movie made in classic Tarantino style. You got the chapter division, eclectic soundtrack, well-written dialogue and colorful characters. Basically all the great elements that we recognize from his previous productions. Sadly though, it also possesses some of the same flaws. I mean, I'm all for dialogue-driven stories, but I don't think this movie would have suffered from a little more action. Because 2½ hours is a lot to sit through, when the better part of the film consists of "talking heads". In any case, it's thoroughly enjoyable. Not as good as to be called great, but still the best work by Tarantino since Pulp Fiction. November 22, 2009

2012 - PG-13 Precisely what I expected it to be: an entertaining, but crappily written disaster flick. Just like in Emmerich's previous films, the special effects are breath-takingly good. Definitely some of the best I've ever seen. The script, however, is so full of clichés that the film really had no identity at all. Many scenes will make you cringe, and there's such a multitude of silly, sappy and cheesy moments that it almost bordered on becoming a parody. I mean, I know it's hopeless to look for believability in this type of story, but when the main characters make a close-call plane escape for the third time in a row, it started to get on my nerves. And by the end, you just dont care anymore about who lives and who dies. Even so, I have to say I liked it for the most part. Because altough being founded upon a lousy screenplay, it sure delivered on the action. In other words, a pretty good popcorn flick, but nothing I'd wanna add to my own movie shelf. Funny People - R Judd Apatow has proven to be a consistently good film-maker. Ever since I saw his TV show Freaks and Geeks, and the brilliantly funny The 40 Year-Old Virgin, I've had a tremendous respect for his work. Because he delivers every time, and all the movies he's put out so far have been well above the average. As for this film, it's certainly no exception. The dialogue is superb and flows so well and naturally, that you may think it was all improvised and made up on the spot. Most of it probably is, because it felt more like the actor's own words, as opposed to pre-written dialogue. As it comes to the acting, it keeps an equally high level. Adam Sandler gives us the whole spectrum of his capabilites, jumping back and forth between being funny and serious. His chemistry with the rest of the cast is nothing short of perfect. However, altough it's much like a semi-biography/self-parody of his life and acting career, it isn't just his movie. Because beside him is a top notch supporting cast, including a lot of fun and unexpected cameos. The film isn't without it's flaws and downsides though. First of all, it's way too long for its own good. The first half flies by pretty fast, but the second, which holds most of the drama, got pretty draggy and long-winded. Less is always more, and that's something a great writer like Apatow should know by now (but maybe I shouldn't say much, considering how overly long this review became). Anyhow, if you liked his previous movies, you're bound to enjoy this one as well. Especially the stand-up parts, which alone makes it worth the watch. November 18, 2009
