| Linda Linda Linda - Unrated | I'm talking about Japanese high school girls who form a rock 'n' roll band, choose an infectious song ("Linda Linda Linda"), and pull out all the stops to perform in their school's talent show. You'll come out singing the damn song. | March 29, 2007 | N/A | |||
| The The Piano Tuner of Earthquakes - Unrated |
For me, this film is a trip through a wormhole back to 19th century Symbolism. There simply is nothing going on nowadays that is quite like what I saw up there on the screen--which is to say that my recommendation may only ring true for half of you. Dream rather than story logic prevails here, as do certain thematic preoccupations that would resonate with only two or three other directors that come to mind, including Jean Cocteau and David Cronenberg. It's a meticulously crafted, mesmerizing experience, and it would probably be diminished by viewing on a small screen. |

| Shortbus - Unrated | For those who've only seen previews, I'll confirm: yes, there is plenty of sexual content. But come on, see it anyway. It's a sweetheart of a movie, utterly, endearingly human in its disfunctional, downtown NYC way. I half expected to see a cameo by Cyndi Lauper, though a climactic parade-through by the Hungry March Band more than compensated. | March 29, 2007 | N/A | |||
| The Departed - R |
Scorsese showing off, Nicholson, DiCaprio, and Wahlberg in top form, and the rest of the cast not far behind. Not a pristine work of art, but the kind of movie that can be enjoyed for the sheer fun of it. |

| Flags of Our Fathers - R | A heartfelt and effective expression of liberal values, Eastwood succeeds, better than Spielberg did in SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, in weaving multiple stories into a single, larger, historical moment, into a rueful, but tough world view. The film is structurally ambitious (occasionally in an awkward way) and captures, here and there, images of warfare as bleakly beautiful as those in Jeunet's "A Very Long Engagement." | March 29, 2007 | N/A |
