One of the best movies I've seen in a long time, Let the Right One In is based on a book by Swedish author John Ajvide Lindqvist. Set in 1980's Stockholm, a 12 year old boy finds himself an easy target for school bullies and dreams of gaining revenge on them. When a 12 year old girl girl moves in to the same apartment block as him, she helps change his life and helps him stand up to the bullies, while struggling to hide her own secret. She needs to be invited in to rooms before entering, she cannot go out during the daytime and needs to drink blood to survive. Despite finding out about her secret, the young boy falls in love with her and helps her when she's put in jeopardy after corpses are found drained of their blood. This pre-teen vampiric romance is the movie that Twilight wishes it was. |

Sam Rockwell stars as an astronaut nearing the end of his 3 year contract on the moon, where he is mining for the Earth's main source of power, Helium-3 with the aid of a helper computer known as GERTY (voiced by Kevin Spacey). After injuring himself in an accident, he is greeted by a young man claiming to be him and soon begins to question his sanity. |

| Pirate Radio (The Boat That Rocked) - R | Very fun British comedy with an excellent mixed cast of Brits and Americans. Philip Seymour Hoffman, Rhys Ifans, Bill Nighy and Nick Frost are among those who work on a boat broadcasting pirate radio in the mid-1960's. Kenneth Branagh and Jack Davenport play the Government workers who plan to abolish what they claim is 'illegal' entertainment, and Tom Sturridge is the young teenager sent to live the DJs on the radio boat and finding love. Exactly how the Punisher should be portrayed, Ray Stevenson (from TV series Rome) is perfectly cast as Frank Castle, who gets on the wrong side of the law after killing an undercover FBI agent attempting to bring mobster Billy Russoti (Dominic West from 300) to justice. Russoti is horribly wounded in the process and is brought back from the brink of death as the disfigured Jigsaw. With the help of the Punisher Task Force, Castle stands against Jigsaw and his new gang (complete with crazy younger brother Loony Bin Jim) and to try and make up for his mistake beforehand while bonding with the deceased agent's family. Some of the accents may seem like cheap Godfather knock-offs and some action scenes get a bit repeitive, but the performances of Stevenson, West, Doug Hutchison and Colin Salmon keep up the fun factor in this no holds barred, extremely gory thriller. |

| Dragonball Evolution - PG | Extremely painful viewing, especially if you're a huge fan of the Dragonball series. It tries to make a few nods to the original storyline, but it falls flat and ends up ripping off multiple movies with some scenes (most notably Spider-Man, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Transformers). James Marsters and Chow-Yun Fat are horribly wasted in their roles and the remaining characters in the story are extremely laughable (especially Yamcha, played by a Korean who talks like a Californian surf dude). 80 minutes of your life you'll never ever get back, DB fan or not. | September 18, 2009 | N/A | |||
| Inglourious Basterds - R | One of the best movies of 2009, and a perfect way to finish off the summer movie season. Tarantino injects his brand of humour, excelent storytelling and bloodthirsty violence into World War II, focusing on a group of American Jews known as the Basterds, who are hunting Nazis for information on their hideouts around France as well as that of their Fuhrer. Brad Pitt puts in one of the performances of his career as Lt. Aldo Raine, the leader of the Basterds but the show stealing performance goes to Melanie Laurent as French Jewish cinema owner Shosanna who uses her business to plot a mass assassination of Nazis during a movie premiere. Although the running time clocks in at 152 minutes, the time flies by, and Tarantino delivers another fantastic job with what is probably his best movie this decade. | September 2, 2009 | N/A | |||

Very fun, no-brainer action film, one of the better movies of a poor/mediocre summer. Christopher Eccleston's Scottish accent's pretty laughable, but the action and some acting performances (most noteably the underused Adewale and the fantastic Ray Park) are well worth seeing this movie for. Those of you who remember the '80's GI Joe series will have a laugh at hearing some old catchphrases as well (Yo Joe, Knowing is half the battle etc.) |

| Lionheart (Wrong Bet) (A.W.O.L.: Absent Without Leave) - R | One of Jean-Claude's better films from his early career, Lionheart (or AWOL as it was known on this side of the Atlantic) sees him escaping from a French Foreign Legion outpost in Northern Africa to travel to Los Angeles when he finds out his brother has been left for dead after a botched deal with drug dealers. Arriving in New York after 3 or 4 weeks at sea, he attracts the attention of a former fighter turned hustler who promotes him as an underground boxer in order for Lyon (Van Damme) to help pay for his trip to LA, and to help his widowed sister in-law to help pay the rent to keep her and her daughter from living rough. A decent movie based off an obscure videogame from the mid-90's, full of crude humour and extreme violence. Uwe Boll is actually quite underrated as a director as he makes something actually enjoyable after quite a poor opening 20 minutes. Boll also makes a small cameo as himself before being attacked by the man who created the original game in a small in-joke towards his reputation as a movie director. |
