Toy Story 3

As much as i love the Toy Story films, i am apprehensive about a third one. The potential, as with most third installments to mess up and destroy the originals is too great. Hopefully though this film will be great.
Toy Story

The first and the best computer animated film. The animation is flawless, the storyline is original and funny, the voice actors are perfect. Pure genius. This film never gets old.
Tae Guk Gi: The Brotherhood of War
R
This film was great and one of the best war films i've seen. Set during the Korean War of the 1950s. It revolves around two brothers who are forced to join the South Korean army and their continuing efforts to survive. Shows how war can affect people and tear families apart. There would have been a time when i would have overlooked any film which wasn't in english or wasn't made by Hollywood. But this film, which is Korean cinemas most successful film just shows that other countries can make films just as good if not superior to Hollywood. I have read that this film has been compared to Saving Private Ryan. Although i wouldn't really compare them both, I think this film is far better. The storyline is good and the battle scenes are fantastic and seem so incredibly real and far greater than those of Saving Private Ryan. It was especially good to see a war film about something other than the Second World War. The Korean War has often been known as the Forgotten War and this film does it justice i think. A must see!
Forrest Gump
PG-13
I only saw this film fairly recently, after most people had already seen it. I was surprised at how good it was and how much i enjoyed it. I enjoyed Tom Hanks' performance and i am not usually a massive fan of Tom Hanks, but i am beginning to like him as an actor more and more. The story flows perfectly and is edited perfectly along with the music. A wonderful film. The director Robert Zemeckis has also become one of my favourites.
Gladiator
R
Great inspiring film. Probably Ridley Scott's best film. A great story, told well which can be watched again and again. Russell Crowe's acting is excellent along with the rest of the cast. I particulalry liked Oliver Reed, who sadly died during the making of the film. Its a shame this film didn't win best score. I think the music is fantastic and possibly Hans Zimmer's best.

V for Vendetta

An awesome film!!! Hugo Weaving is really good in this film, while Natalie Portman shows she can act and really gets away from her restricted role in the Star Wars movies. A very clever and impressive film.
2.
The Lord of the Rings - The Return of the King
PG-13
This has to be the best film ever made. Acting, the effects, the directing, everything is excellent. Rightly deserved the 11 Oscars that it won. A total epic.
4.
Batman Begins
PG-13
This is a far superior film than previous Batman installments. Director Christopher Nolan restores the franchise and explores the origins of Batman and why he became who he did. A much darker and more serious film, with one of my favourite casts for a movie. Everyone is cast perfectly, Christian Bale (who puts on a flawless American accent) is an excellent Batman. while Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Liam Neeson, Morgan Freeman and Cillian Murphy lend great support. The only weak actor is Katie Holmes. However her acting does not detract from the overall quality of the film. The cast, the acting, the dialogue, the music and directing are all fantastic. One of my all time favourites!

The Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring
PG-13
This is a brilliant film. The first part of the epic film trilogy excellently directed by Peter Jackson. It was vey ambitious and daunting to adapt a book such as The Lord of the Rings to the big screen. But the result is amazing. I think every actor fits their role perfectly and is just as i imagined them in the book. Ian Mckellen's Gandalf is spot on while Christopher Lee's Saruman is better than i could have hoped for. The film boasts some impressive special effects thanks to Peter Jacksons effects company Weta Digital which shows its skill, one notable example being the mines of Moria. The music is also superb and matches well with the film. The cinematography is also great and i think is even more so in The Two Towers and The Return of the King. The choice of New Zealand for filming couldn't have been better and the incredible landscapes are put to good use to really bring the world of Middle Earth alive.Although some things have been slightly changed in the film from the book, that is only to be expected and i don't think it impacts on the overall quality of the film. I have heard some people complain about the length of the films but to me that doesn't matter, because the film is so engrossing and it just sucks you right in. Overall an incredible film well worth watching along with its two impressive sequels.

Hero
by JackThe first foreign film I've watched. And it certainly won't be the last.
Plot: In feudal China, the King of Qin is waging a bloody campaign to conquer the entire land. He has been made a target of three dangerous assassins: spear-wielding Sky, and the lovers Broken Sword and Flying Snow. One day word comes that he has nothing left to fear; a prefect known only as Nameless has killed all three assassins. Nameless is called to the palace and asked to recount the tale of how he accomplished this amazing feat. After he tells his story, however, the King notices some flaws in it.
Doesn't sound like a film I would enjoy, seeing the plot. But, the way it was performed was flawless.
A true masterpiece. Even if you do have to watch like a deaf person. Most of you on my friends list have seen this, and the review sucks. But whatever.

Iron Man
by DuncanOther reviews I've read have been mixed, so I was worried that my eager anticipation of this movie was unwarranted. Thankfully, Iron Man turned out to be a rather enjoyable experience for me.
Robert Downey Jr. is excellent as the movie's protagonist: genius inventor and weapon's tycoon Tony Stark. He starts off as snarky and arrogant, but he undergoes a change of heart (both figuratively and literally) after he's captured by terrorists who use weapons he's manufactured to do their dastardly deeds. He escapes, thanks to a bitchin' suit of armor he built on the fly, and vows to use his technology for the betterment of mankind rather than it's destruction. He returns to America, retires to his fancy seaside condo, and begins work on a second prototype of that same suit of armor.
As I mentioned before, Downey's performance was fantastic. The supporting cast was pretty good overall as well, particularly Gwyneth Paltrow as Stark's perky assistant Pepper Potts (alliterative names are so fun, aren't they?). The only chink in the armor, as far as the cast is concerned, is Terrance Howard. He seems like he's going through the motions, like a high school freshman who doesn't want to be in the play, but his parents forced him to audition for it. His role isn't that big, thankfully, so his lackluster performance is tolerable.
My one and only gripe, and one I'll probably get flack for, is that there's not enough action. I like superhero movies with an engaging story and dynamic characters, and Iron Man's characters and plot are well rounded. But more emphasis is put on plot development than blowin' shit up, rahter than finding a balance between the two. Spider-Man and Batman Begins are movies that have successfully found this balance, which is what made them so great.
That doesn't mean Iron Man is terrible. In fact, it's far from it. The action that IS there is beautifully orchestrated, the special effects are top notch, and the script is well-written. Throw in the best cameo by Stan Lee since Mallrats, and you have yourself a great superhero movie.
Not a bad way to start the summer...If you haven't seen it yet, and you plan on seeing it in the theater, wait through the credits. Not only will your ears be treated to Tony Iommi crankin' out sweet riffs, but there's an extra scene that'll be worth the wait...

88 Minutes
by MichaelI can't firmly declare 88 MINUTES as Pacino's worst film (I have yet to see REVOLUTION, and there's always GIGLI), but it is quite possibly the worst film that we'll see released in 2008 (not including those witless, pointless horror films we seem to be getting every few weeks).
Don't see 88 MINUTES... it's as bad as you've heard. A prime contender, hell front runner, for worst picture of 2008.

You're welcome. See I have won and lost film quizzes off the back of these very questions in the past.
wikipedia, you gotta love it! but like you said "take with a pinch of salt" etc
Keifer Sutherland was born in England (London to be precise) so technically that makes him a Brit! true his dad is Canadian... so you could get away with that one. Keanu Reeves on the other hand, I'll have to argue with you on that one. from the internet movie database @ IMDB.COM http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000206/ but he isn't even Hawaiian (which is where I always thought he was from - it's where he grew up) Based on his place of birth, he's middle eastern, so we're both wrong! but you'd never have guessed.
Apart from that I think we can agree all your other candidates are definitely from the land of the mounted policemen. LOL

Lust, Caution (Se jie)
by SarahDirector:Ang Lee
Released: 2008
Stars: Joan Chen, Tony Leung Chi Wai, Tang Wei
Genre:Drama, Romance, War
Country:China/Taiwan/Hong Kong/USA

Frustrated in his attempts to assassinate Yee, who is an important official in Japanese-ruled Shanghai, Old Wu, who has lost his wife and two sons as well as two women who had attempted to seduce Yee, now recruits Kuang, Mai Tai Tai, and their troupe of drama students from Hong Kong University in yet another attempt to do away with Yee. Mai Tai Tai is chosen to befriend Yee, which she does by posing as the wife of Mak, befriending Yee's wife and her female friends, and then eventually befriending Yee himself
Well I waited a gone long while to see Ang Lee's latest film after being albeit slightly disappointed with Brockback Mountain. Lust,Caution however blew me away. My expectations were slightly shortened because of the many dissapointing reviews I read both in newspapers her ein the UK and reviews on here. To be honest I don't quite know what film they were watching. Utterly compelling and kept me on tender hooks throughout.
As most of my friends on here know I tend to watch a lot of Asian cinema and that Tony Leung is one of my top 5 favourite actors, so I just had to see this. The narrative of the film is incredibly orginal and also because it deals with the subject of Japanese occupied Shanghai, something not familiar to Western audiences. I must admit that I wasn't 100% clear about the background to the story but as time went on it didn't seem to matter as it was inevitably about one character. The film is long but for a reason. It's depicting a story which is incredibly complex and just isn't going to be told in 1 and a bit hours. There are so many sides to the story that you don't envisidge at the first part of the film.
I love the way Lee switches narrative as we see the end of the story at the beginning. This means that we are able to see the full backdrop of the characters and understand their motives, feelings and of course the realtionship with one another. By this I mean Wong and her Dram clas friends who are part of the Resistance. This is an example of superb storytelling, which to be honest I haven't seen for a good few months. What is great is that the 2 and a bit hours just flew by and suddenly I realised the film is almost over. As I've said before just utterly mangnificent.
Oddly, this being a part USA film, this received no Oscar nominations but luckily us Brits awarded some BAFTA nominations. Believe me it so deserves it and it just depicts the story so so well. Being an art house film lover aswell, the story was paced so so well. This is partly due to the superb script writen by American James Schamus who brilliantly writes quick, informative dialogue that imeadialty gets you hooked from the start. Again....utterly amazing. Still can't get over the snobbery at the Oscars these days. As many of Lee's films, Lust caution is ipeccably photographed throughout it's length time. From the gorgeous sceney to the lush lanscapes of Shaghai.
The acting in Lee's film is fantastic. Tony Leung, who I will never say a bad word about, brilliantly plays two sides of Yee; charming and albeit slightly callous. This meant that as a viewer you liked him one minute and hated him the next. Leung is utterly amazing and deserves more credit by Western audiences. I hope he gains some sort of way into Western cinema soon. Tang Wei, who gained a BAFTA rising Star nomination was equally brilliant playing the naive yet incredibly strong Wong who eventually completely turns Mak(chi-Wai) around from this cold hearted man to a man who is left helpless at the end of the film. Their relationship is depicted strongly in the conterversial sex scenes, which were heavy publisied in the USA and that it was awards an NC-17 rating. Which is ridiculous. The sex scenes look so real and depict this up and down relationship betwen the two charactersl for instance the several sexual posistions and the more "harder" scene and a more emotive one. This I think is a reason why a lot of people didn;t get this film. I think because it's very "arty" and not exactly your more mainstream film.
Overall a stunning masterpiece which might very well be one of my favourite films as I could watch this again. Lust,Caution is seriously UNDERATED and deserved far more credit. It's offical Ang lee is on of the great story tellers our there.
Highly recomend and one of Lee's very best films.
10/10So good I've written a whole essay about it....go and rent it now!

Hors de prix (Priceless)
by CraigDirected by: Pierre Salvadori.
Starring: Audrey Tautou, Gad Elmaleh, Marie-Christine Adam, Vernon Dobtcheff.
<< I'd like too...I'd love too... >>
The story follows Jean, an average, shy bartender who works in a fancy hotel. On a quiet night in the bar, he is mistaken by a beautiful opportunist as another millionaire for her to flirt with. But things soon turn around when she finds out who he really is and a series of events take both of them down a path they never expected each other to go.
This won't be the first time I'll say this in this review...but Priceless is one hell of a surprise. The main reason I picked this up was because of Audrey Tautou, who is up there as one of my favorite actresses. I got more than just her amazing presence.
Priceless succeeds on more levels than one. The obvious one where it slips into cliché is the ending...but a lot of people should know by now that in any romantic comedy, it's not the ending we want to be surprised at, its the trip there.
The direction is simple but never confined. Armed with some exquisite locations and set designs, Pierre Salvadori really has the room to expand the amazing tones of the script and places them nicely into every frame...and the script is certainly a surprise. Sweet, charming and witty are few words to describe the content. Throughout a majority of the film, these charming characters are given a rather sweet spark to work with and they get there avoiding cliché along the way, twisting its way through in a rather witty style, its surprising to see that it doesn't fall into another annoying rom-com.
The performances are brilliant. Audrey Tautou continues to show her incredible presence and charm in everything she tackles and its her greatest performance in years...and shes even more beautiful than ever. Alongside a very good supporting cast, Gad Elmaleh impressed me more than I expected to be. He successfully manages to play the ways of the character in such a smooth and realistic way without any slip-ups, from the shy, stumbling 'virgin' to life...to the charming, believable millionaire, its something worth mentioning.
Priceless is a surprise. Alongside obvious brilliant performances, the production values and some exquisite cinematography and set design also add the right effect to the underlying tones of this incredible little film with help from some sharp direction. The ending is obvious, but the trip there is 'Priceless'.Definitely look around for this one, should be relatively new on DVD shelves in most countries.

Hi Mark, re your "Canadian actor poll" I think you gotta redo it because you got a couple of definite errors, and a couple of uncertain options.
Keanu Reeves is HAWAIIAN
Keifer Sutherland is BRITISH
others I'm not sure about, so this conversation will run for a bit longer yet...

Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay (Harold & Kumar 2)
by MichaelI laughed A LOT... and the film gets an extra half-star from me for it's inspired tastelessness and gut-busting gags. This is probably the worst film I've given 4 stars to (it's filled with unnecessary schtick, especially a segment featuring a one-eyed inbred child) but this is one of the rare times I was able to overlook obvious faults and just go along for the ride. Sure to offend just about everyone, ESCAPE FROM GUANTANAMO BAY is one hell of a good time.
I rarely laugh out loud during comedies anymore; this was a huge exception! I still think WHITE CASTLE was the better film though.

Zoolander
by CraigDirected by: Ben Stiller.
Starring: Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Christine Taylor, Will Ferrell, Milla Jovovich.
<<"I'm pretty sure there's a lot more to life than being really, really, ridiculously good looking. And I plan on finding out what that is.">>
The story follows Derek Zoolander, worldwide fashion model and an icon to everyone in the industry...but is as clueless as they come. After an event where he accepts the award for male model of the year in a state of confusion, a band of political assassins posing as male models see there chance to brainwash someone to kill the prime minister of Malaysia, someone who uses child labor that they want for there fashion production.
Its one hell of a far out plot right there, but when you plan to do an 'idiot' comedy, anything goes...as long as you can do it right. I usually hate Ben Stiller as an actor, continuously repeating role after role with his wooden persona, but with his own creation 'Zoolander', that he not only starred in, but directed, produced and co-wrote, hes at the top of his game.
What made this film steps above many is the sharp take on making this film a satire. Not only is it successful in creating a realistic portrayal of such an industry and ridicules it at every turn, but its truly respectful to everything and everyone in that business and that is thanks to some sharp writing and impressive direction from Ben that has some great attention to detail.
The performances are brilliant for what they try to achieve. Ben Stiller achieves the moronic ways of the character through simple facials and well delivered lines and it makes a change to see that he can actually achieve something and do it well. Owen Wilson stands alongside Ben with the same idea and achieves the same style...and alongside a great supporting cast, it all works extremely well...and Will Ferrell is as crazy as ever before and he delivers.
What some people forget to accept is that this is intentionally an 'idiot' comedy and the fact that it is underrated because of that shows who the real idiots are. Zoolander is leagues ahead of Dumb and Dumber and a majority of Farrelly Brothers film thanks to its excellent blend of sharp satire and great comedic timing. A cult classic that has stayed memorable...people just need to experience it again.Had to re-watch and I'm glad I did...an underrated cult classic.
