One of my favorite older horror films. Definitely on the top ten of older classic horror movies. This is one spooky ride. Drenched in creepy atmosphere beyond belief and one of the spookiest horror scores I have ever heard. This movie reminds me of just one long Twilight Zone episode, which is great, because The Twilight Zone is probably the best horror series ever to be created. Carnival of Souls is the perfect movie for a dark and stormy night, and it wouldn't feel better any other way. This movie was only made for night time viewing, period. Even better, a great movie to watch around Halloween time.
Up there with "Horror Hotel", this is one of the most atmospheric horror films ever made. And spooky too. I highly recommend Carnival of Souls(that is of course if you appreciate older horror films). This movie is truly a classic!
Plot -
"Mary Henry is enjoying the day by riding around in a car with two friends. When challenged to a drag, the women accept, but are forced off of a bridge. It appears that all are drowned, until Mary, quite some time later, amazingly emerges from the river. After recovering, Mary accepts a job in a new town as a church organist, only to be dogged by a mysterious phantom figure that seems to reside in an old run-down pavilion. It is here that Mary must confront the personal demons of her spiritual insouciance."

This is the movie that made me get into horror films. My mother rented this for me when I was 5 years old. Judging by the cover alone she thought it was just another cartoon, lol. She knew I was into dark fairy tales(strange being that I was only five, but I guess I was naturally born with the appreciation of horror), so the cover of the skeleton on the front didn't make her question anything out of the ordinary. Thanks Mom! lol
This movie is both scary and funny at the same time. Let me rephrase that...this movie is hilarious. This is one of my favorite horror films and I owe it all to Creepshow.
Stephen King's Creepshow is a 1982 anthology horror movie with 5 stories directed by George A. Romero (of Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead fame), and written by Stephen King.
#1 Father's Day - Years ago, Nathan Grantham was killed on Father's day when his daughter Bedelia bashed him in the head with a marble ashtray as he screamed for his cake. Seven years later, as his relatives get together for their annual dinner on Father's day, Nathan Grantham comes back from the dead and returns the favor in a quest for his beloved cake, and is killing off his relatives one by one.
Father's Day is the creepiest one of the bunch. Truly horrifying. (Ed Harris dancing is horrifying as well, lol.)
Memorable quotes from Father's Day:
"Where's my cake, Bedelia? Where's my Father's Day cake? I want my cake you dirty bitch! I'm going to have it!"
- Nathan Grantham
"Mrs. Danvers..."
- Aunt Bedelia
"It's Father's Day, and I got my cake."
- Nathan Grantham
#2 The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill -A dimwitted backwoods hick thinks a newly-discovered meteorite will provide enough money to pay off the arrears $200 as his bank loan. Instead, he finds himself being overcome by a rapidly spreading plant-like organism that comes off the meteorite. Stephen King himself plays the doomed protagonist in this darkly humorous story.
The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill is one of the funniest of the bunch. A silly and gross out laugh riot.
Memorable quotes from The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill:
"Meteor shit!"
- Jordy
"This is going to be extremely painful Mr. Verrill"
- The doctor
"Please God...let my luck be good just this once."
- Jordy
# 3 Something to Tide You Over - A cold-blooded Leslie Nielsen stages a terrible doom for his unfaithful wife, Becky and her lover, Harry Wentworth (Ted Danson) by burying them up to their necks on the beach, below the high tide line. But the tide sometimes secure a power of reviving things back.
Something to Tide You Over is another creepy one of the bunch(especially the scene with the evil laughter on the beach). This one is my least favorite but it's still fun and entertaining as hell.
Memorable quotes from Something to Tide You Over:
"Wentworth! I suggest you get out of here! May I remind you, dear boy, I have the gun!"
- Richard Vickers
"You can't shoot us dead, Richard...?
"...because we're already dead!"
- Harry and Becky
"Oh I can hold my breath for a long, long time!"
- Richard Vickers
# 4 The Crate - A mysterious, extremely lethal creature is unwittingly ransomed from its crate in this suspenseful and gory monster story. Hal Holbrook stars as college professor Henry Northrup, who sees the creature as a way to get rid himself of his emotionally abusive wife, Wilma, played by Adrienne Barbeau.
The Crate is by far my favorite story in Creepshow! Pretty creepy and bloody as hell...oh yeah, and how can I forget. It's hilarious too!
Memorable quotes from The Crate:
"No, I don't think you'll expect this Wilma. No, this is going to be an entirely new experience!"
- Henry Northrup
"Oh, Henry, you are such a little kid! I swear to God you are! I mean were would you be without me to take care of you?"
- Wilma Northrup
"Just tell it to call you Billy."
- Henry Northrup
# 5 They're Creeping Up On You! - A cruel, miserly and ruthless businessman, Upson Pratt (played by screen legend E. G. Marshall), is disgusted by germs and insects, but finds himself helpless to stop them when Mr. White, his put-upon employee, allows his apartment to be overrun by endless hordes of cockroaches. His hatred of cockroaches was seen by some as a metaphor for prejudice.
They're Creeping Up On You is the grossest and nastiest story in Creepshow. This one will give you the chills. Totally disgusting. I hate bugs! lol
Memorable quotes from They're Creeping Up On You:
"Do it first...do it now!"
- Upson Pratt
"I hope you die!"
- Lenora Castonmeyer
"I don't give a fuck if you decided to take the kids to Attica this year. There are still roaches in this place, Reynolds. I killed one not five minutes ago."
- Upson Pratt
Creepshow is a crazy ass, scary and funny horror film. I highly Recommend this if you haven't seen it yet!
Other Reviews:
"Romero and King have approached this movie with humor and affection, as well as with an appreciation of the macabre."

A spooky, atmospheric, fun and chilling B horror movie. Dead of Night is the perfect popcorn flick for a Halloween night viewing. Directed by Bob Clark, the man who brought us Black Christmas, Dead of Night tells an eerie tale of a deceased soldier who returns from Vietnam as a zombie. This movie was shot on a very low budget, and it definitely shows. But not to worry, cause the cheap look only works more toward it's advantage. Here we get all the spooky elements that make a horror movie so frighteningly fun...the sounds of howling winds, the cold and dark spooky atmosphere, the creepy and dramatic music in the background, and of course one hell of a scary ass lead character.
Dead of Night is not gory, nor is it violent. There's nothing extreme about it. In fact, this movie is actually rated PG. But if that stops you from seeing it, then you're missing out. Dead of Night didn't need to be extreme. It was perfect just the way it was. This movie is more about mood and atmosphere than anything else. It aims to send shivers down your spine by building tension, and creeps up on you from it's dark and cold cinematography. Dead of Night is a true treat for any horror fan who longs a great ghost story. And like I said before, it's a perfect Halloween time movie! Alone in the dark, with a bowl of popcorn, is the only way Dead of Night should be viewed.
The Funhouse is a great little campy, fun, atmospheric horror flick. This is another popcorn flick with a good old Halloween holiday feel to it.
Plot -
"Against her father's orders, Amy goes to a sleazy traveling carnival with her new boyfriend Buzz, her best friend Liz, and Liz's boyfriend Richie. Unbeknownst to the four teens, Amy's prank-happy little brother Joey (who happens to be obsessed with classic horror movies) sneaks out of the house and follows them to the carnival...which Amy's father was opposed to because a couple of girls were found murdered at its previous location; no one knows who killed the two children or how, although both girls had to be identified via dental records.
At the carnival, the four youngsters smoke marijuana and sneak into a 21-and-over strip joint. They heckle Madame Zena the fortune teller , visit a freaks of nature exhibit, and view a magic show. Finally, the foursome telephone their parents and lie to them, so they can spend the night in the carnival's funhouse - actually a dark ride - after it closes. While Joey waits for them to emerge, the teenagers enjoy a sexual romp in the dark funhouse. Then they notice the Funhouse Barker's assistant - a huge man in a Frankenstein suit who never speaks - making out with a lingerie-clad Madame Zena (who is old enough to be the teens' grandmother). She demands a hundred dollars from "Frankenstein," and then refuses to "go all the way" as agreed. When she won't give back the money, "Frankenstein" attacks and strangles her to death. The four teenagers attempt to leave the funhouse, but it is locked up. It is now up to the group of four young teenagers to survive the night from the Frankenstein masked creature, and his crazed father Conrad Straker who is protecting him."
More then half of this movie just shows the teenagers hanging out at the carnival getting into all sorts of little mischievous adventures, and that's all in the beginning of the film. It's in the middle of the movie when the terror starts picking up little by little, but everything before that was the perfect build up and it still managed to be creepy without even showing anything at all. It was the tone of the film that carried it so well...the weird carnival with a troubled past, the creepy homeless people just wandering around aimlessly, an angry old fortune teller, sad deformed animals, a drunken magician dressed as Dracula, and a whole bunch of freaky deaky carnival ride owners. It's later on when the horror really gets thrown into your face with the psychotic ride owner Conrad Straker and his horribly deformed, mentally challenged blood thirsty son.
The acting isn't all that bad at all and the story, although not too original, was told in a very creepy fashion. Again, this is just a fun little horror flick, nothing's here that will stick with you forever but it is still enjoyable to watch(perhaps one of those movies that's good for a stormy night). This is another one that's not all about the gore, but more just for the creepy atmosphere and bizarre characters. I think this is one of Tobe Hooper's best films and I highly recommend it if you're a fan of campy little horror films with great dark atmosphere. I grew up on this one and I just love this movie!
My favorite werewolf movie of all time! Hands down, a terrific and frightful classic. Joe Dante is truly a maestro of thrills and chills. Drenched in spooky atmosphere, funny, and scary all at the same time. Great werewolf transformation effects as well. Wonderful and original script, superb performances, and beautifully directed - This movie goes down in horror history as one of the best werewolf movies ever made!
Don't expect any gore here, The Howling relies on atmosphere, a chilling score, and creepy ass characters to freak us out. And for those who crave a little nudity in your horror films, not to worry. I have just one question for you...Ever see two werewolves getting down and dirty, doing the nasty?(the hottest most beautiful werewolf at that I may add...RIP "Elisabeth Brooks").
Elisabeth Brooks
The Howling is an amazing horror film. It moves at a slow pace but never gets boring. Every horror fan should really see this movie. It's a real chiller and a spine tingler. Another good horror movie for a dark and rainy night. I highly recommend this movie!
Hell Night is a creepy little fun horror movie from the 80's. The atmosphere in this movie is amazing, and to me atmosphere is one of the strongest qualities in a horror film. Yes there's the typical 80's cheese, but it's always fun and it never takes away from the fear that this movie delivers. We get a spooky old mansion in the dark foggy mist, possibly haunted by a ghost, and a killer who's on a murderous rampage killing off a group of teens one by one. It's all great and there are some really true intense nail biting moments in here as well. To me, this is Linda Blair's best movie by far.
"Hell Night focuses on Marti, a young college co-ed played by Linda Blair. Marti is pledging a sorority and must endure "hell night," the night when pledges must perform some idiotic stunt in order to become members. So, Marti along with fellow pledge Denise, must spend the night in Garth Mansion, along with fraternity pledges Jeff and Seth. Why Garth Manor you may ask? Well, it seems that millionaire Mr. Garth and his wife had three deformed children. Mr. Garth couldn't take this, so he slaughtered his family and killed himself, but only three bodies were found. The legend has it that Andrew, the youngest Garth child, still roams the grounds.
So, Marti and the rest of the gang enter Garth Mansion. Soon, frat president Jeff, and two cronies arrive to begin playing pranks on the group to try and frighten them. But, someone else is in the house, someone who isn't there for fun and games. One by one the young partiers are picked off by an unseen assailant. Is this all an elaborate "hell night" trick or has one of the Garth's returned to seek vengeance?"
Hell Night is such an underrated film that had never gotten the attention that it deserved. The beautiful Linda Blair was stunning in this film(and no, I'm not just talking about all that cleavage she showed here), even though that definitely was a plus. The acting wasn't great, but it wasn't bad either, and it never becomes too unbelievable. Actually the performances were just right for the type of movie that this was and the story, although not too original, was told in a very creepy fashion. Another great thing about this movie too was the score, the music here was very eerie and spine tingling and it had added much tension to several scenes in the movie.
This movie is definitely perfect to watch around Halloween time, for it does have that spooky spirited Halloween feel to it. I just loved this movie! Don't expect any gore or anything like that, because even though it's rated R with the occasional spurts of violence and some nudity, this movie strongly relies on the spooky dark atmosphere, along with a good old creepy story. Try to watch this movie in the dark, when you're alone at night, I'm sure you'll be quite pleased. Check this movie out...Hell Night is a must see!
Witchboard is a good creepy little 80's horror film. The movie was directed by Kevin S. Tenney, the same man who brought you "Night of the Demons". I remember being frightened when I saw this as a little kid, and even though not so much any more, this movie still has the tendency to creep you out. If you've seen Night of the Demons then you should already know, just like Witchboard, Kevin S. Tenney tends set the cheese factor at a very high level. Yes Witchbaord is cheesy, but it's done in such a way that makes the movie a very fun film to watch. Like Night of the Demons, Witchboard has many creepy elements that are thrown into mix. Right in between the corny humor and the dramatic acting lies a very chilling story to be told, which involves an even creepy character that goes by the name of Malfeitor. And don't expect any gore, although this is rated R this movie isn't about that.
"Witchboard centers around Linda Brewster and the evil that befalls her whilst trying to communicate with the dead with a Ouija board. Linda falls under the seductive spell of the Ouija one night at a big party, and while her friend warns her to "never play with it alone", Linda does just that. She comes in contact with a spirit named "David" who claims to be the spirit of a seven year old boy, but in reality it is the spirit of an axe murderer named Malfeitor. Malfeitor starts to use his supernatural force to kill off all of Linda's acquaintances in a series of bizarre accidents. However, by the time that anybody realizes what the hell is going on, Malfeitor has already seized control of Linda's soul."
Don't watch this movie and expect any top notch grade "A" film making. This is a semi low budget horror film that doesn't take it self as serious as you might think. The acting sometimes becomes over dramatic, but that's not to say that the acting is really bad. The acting is actually really good, and given the situations that are thrown into the story, the performances become quite believable. The humor in Witchboard, same as Night of the Demons, is subtle and quite cheesy but it's always very funny. Not "laugh out loud" humor, but still very funny. The good thing too was that the humor, or even the moments of dramatic acting, never really took away from the creep factor and as a matter of fact there are some truly chilling moments. Add to that a very creepy score and a very creepy character, Malfeitor, you got yourself an eerie little gem here. Witchboard is highly recommended! Watch this one alone at night.
Night of the Demons is an amazingly great fun Halloween film. If you consider yourself to be a true horror fan then this movie definitely needs to be on your list. And if you take this movie seriously then your missing the whole point. It's fun! Plain and simple. This is just a fun horror movie with that good old spooky Halloween feel to it. The atmosphere in this is sick. Oh my God, does this movie have great dark atmosphere! Talk about scary demons too. Angela(the demon) will have you shitting in your pants. As far as cheese goes, thank God this movie was as cheesy as it was. It made it hilarious. Night of the Demons is one fucking funny and hilarious movie...scary as well.
The acting is bad(So what? It's hilarious)
The script is a mess(So what? It's hilarious)
The characters are retarded(So what? It's hilarious)
Nothing in here is believable or slightly convincing...And yes! It is hilarious.
And after saying all this I will say that Night of the Demons certainly has a charm. It makes and turns cheesy horror into a blast of good times. Everything that's wrong with this film works to it's advantage. The cheese factor is exactly what this movie needed. Because it's played out so well it makes Night of the Demons work as a classic bad 80's B horror film. Underneath all the ridiculous cheese and silliness Night of the Demons still manages to be frightful delight with many scares and chills on the surface. A great Halloween time movie. I highly recommend this one to any horror fan!

If you haven't seen this yet then you're totally missing out. This is one of John Carpenter's best!
"The story follows private investigator John Trent whose specialty is insurance fraud. He is called in by a publisher to investigate the alleged disappearance of the phenomenally popular horror novelist, Sutter Cane. Having vanished with his most recent novel unfinished, Cane's publisher asks Trent to retrieve the work at stake. Trent thinks the whole thing is a publicity stunt but agrees to take the case.
Trent, accompanied by Cane's editor, Linda Styles, eventually tracks the writer to the remote New England town of Hobbs End, previously thought only to exist in Cane's stories. There it soon becomes clear that the wall between fantasy and reality has blurred."
This film pays tribute to the work of horror novelist H. P. Lovecraft. I just love anything that deals with Lovecrafts's work, he has so much that's going on with his stories, all the key elements(along with many great creepy characters), that make a horror story get the well worth attention it deserves.
This movie is heavy on atmosphere. I'm talking about drenched in, all out, spooky ass atmosphere. Like I have said in another review, one of the most important key elements in a horror film is definitely the atmosphere. There are many creepy characters in this as well...a disfigured and angry police officer, a ghostly old and pasty faced man riding a bicycle, deformed and demonically evil little children, an old creepy woman who sprouts creature-like legs while chopping her husband up with an axe, and lots and lots more! This movie is just completely insane. It's an all out fun film to watch. The ending in this is completely brilliant too. It totally blew my mind.
In the Mouth of Madness is a spooky and darkly atmospheric fun film to watch. If you're a horror fan and you haven't seen this one yet, you must get your hands on it as soon as possible. Even if you're not a horror fan...to anyone who hasn't seen this movie, Watch it Soon! Great film!

"This was a great movie. I love these kind of what-if movies. I mean, what if what we read was real or somehow the line between fiction and reality was blurred? What if reality was just what everyone agreed upon? What is reality, anywho? All these questions are raised in the film."

"In the Mouth of Madness might be one of the best things that Carpenter has done to date."

A fun ass horror movie from the 80's. An underrated gem.
Nothing original here, same old slasher hack-em up concept, but still a whole lot of damn fun. A good movie to watch when you're alone at night. And although it probably will not scare you, I'm sure in the end you'll be quite pleased that you spend 90 minutes of your night eating from a bowl of popcorn and watching 5 teenagers get slaughtered by a guy wearing a Groucho Marx mask costume. lol
No gore here either, this movie wasn't about that. The acting was great and there's very good direction, with some spooky cinematography. Cheesy in some parts, but it's the kind of fun 80's horror cheese, and it's not overdone either. Don't take this movie too seriously. There's nothing here that's going to wow you. Just sit back, relax, be open minded and have fun with it. The 80's was a glorious decade for horror films, and believe me, this is one of the good one's from that wonderful time span of blood, guts, and maniacal madmen running amok and hacking up teenagers.
This is the perfect film to even watch around the Halloween season. It has that feel to it. You know that feel? That good old creepy October, things that go bump in the night feel! : )
And although you'll probably guess right at who the killer is, Terror Train will still have you guessing till the very end. It's not so much as to who the killer is, it's more of where the hell is he?...And have you already seen the killer? Because believe me, he'll most likely pass by your very eyes without you even knowing it!...you'll know more what I'm talking about when you see this. Little interesting twist at the very end!
Yes indeed, it's good times with bloodshed, the Groucho Marx killer, and our favorite legendary "scream queen" Jamie Lee Curtis.
I highly recommend this movie. But just have fun with it, that's all it's about.

Funny and cheesy in the best way possible. Bloody, gory, and deranged. This movie is f#@*& great!
Every horror fan needs an injection of Night of the Creeps. If you can't have fun with this movie then you need to immediately go out and find your sense of humor. It might be lost in one of the "Saw" films, lol.
Night of the Creeps is directed by Fred Dekker, the same man who brought us The Monster Squad. If you've seen how great The Monster Squad is then you should already know that Fred Dekker knows how to make one hell of an entertaining horror flick. The Monster Squad is a classic and Night of the Creeps is definitely right up there with it. Night of the Creeps pays homage to 50's sci-fi/horror films and kind of like the movie "Scream" in some ways, it's aware of exactly what it is, making it known that it's nothing more then just a bad B 80's horror movie(pointed out through many little inside jokes from the dialogue).
"Night of the Creeps stars Tom Atkins, Jason Lively and Jill Whitlow. The film is notable as both an earnest attempt at a B-movie as well as a spoof of the genre. While the main plot of the film is related to zombies (its title is a play on Night of the Living Dead) the film also mixes in takes on slashers and alien invasion films.
The classic B-movie Plan 9 from Outer Space is first referenced and then later watched by a character in the film. This is an intentional reference to the fact that the plot of the film is itself similar to Plan 9. Despite a strong cult following, the film has yet to be officially released onto DVD."
Night of the Creeps knows exactly what it's doing, and it does it well. The cheese factor wasn't an accident, it was purposely planned and it was brilliant as hell. If this film didn't have all the cheese that it did I guarantee it wouldn't have been as good. I loved everything about this film, especially the one-liners. From the first opening scene I knew right away I was in for a treat. The black and white 50's setting with an escaped mental patient ending in a blood bath was a beautiful touch. Then cut to 1986 pledge week, with cheesy 80's rock music, handsome jocks with no brains, a beautiful educated goodie-good girl and the two unlucky dorks who suddenly become hero's and might actually save the day. Not to mention the bad ass cop, played by the awesome Tom Atkins, who just can't seem to get a break and lives his life in a death wish, fucking up any slug infested zombie that crosses his path. Hell Yeah!...Atkins for president! lol
Bloody and outrageous. This movie is insanely fun and a must see for any horror fan who appreciates really good B popcorn flicks. This movie has everything a ("bad")horror movie needs. Highly recommended!

The Stuff is a fantastic B horror movie. Yes it's sort of cheesy, but this movie is fun as hell. This is the kind of movie I can see Elvira hosting on a late night Creature Feature. It almost plays off like a cheap 50's B sci-fi/horror film that would see at a drive thru. The Stuff isn't scary, it's not intense, and it's not that gory. The Stuff is just an entertaining, wacky, and wild romp! You can't take this movie seriously or you'll be hugely disappointed. Larry Cohen's intentions wasn't about making a serious movie. The Stuff is strictly tongue in cheek. Everything in this movie was done for a purpose. From it's bad acting, to the playful script and many cuckoo characters...all of this works to the film's advantage. The Stuff is another great movie for the Halloween season.
Another thing...The Stuff looks so damn deliciously good and creamy. I would eat it in a heartbeat. F**k being invaded by it's evilness! It looks so damn tasty!

"I wasn't sure what to expect from this movie. I knew it would be cheesy, because of the title and plot, but I didn't expect to find it so fun to watch."
- Upcoming Horror Movies
"This movie is hilarious! Doesn't really show much script wise, but it's so funny. Anyone who likes some of the lesser-known films of the 80's might appreciate this little gem."
- Bloody Disgusting.com
"The Stuff isn't the deepest or most thought-provoking production of all time, but it does make a valid point and does so in an intelligent and amusing way. It's a great way to spend an afternoon and has a genuine charm that one can enjoy."
- Scared Stiff Reviews
"For fans of sly horror movies with something to say, this is The Stuff you're looking for."
- Apollo Movie Guide
"More or less forgotten in today's day and age, The Stuff is an enjoyable, cheesy 1980s horror film from director Larry Cohen. Though it's classified as horror, it isn't scary at all. It's really more of a campy film with a neat premise, and with social commentary to lend it more credibility."
- Silver Screen Reviews
"***1/2 Larry Cohen's The Stuff is perhaps best described as Don Siegel's Invasion of the Body Snatchers meets Irvin Yeaworth's The Blob, replete with a black humor, Z-movie premise, presented via Swiftian satire, as the director highlights the absurdity of mass consumerism in a manner akin to George Romero's Dawn of the Dead."
- The Horror Review
"The Stuff is as entertaining as a movie about Killer Yogurt can get. All the stock characters are in place, the cliché playbook is run through with a fine toothed comb and as you might expect the movie is appropriately gooey."
- Brokedown Cinema
Whoever watches Waxwork and takes this movie seriously will probably not have a fun time with it. If before you watch this film and know what you're getting into, which is top-notch cheese, gory displays of bloody violence, bunches of corny ass one liners, and a shitload of classic Universal monsters running amok...then you'll probably be quite pleased with this movie. I for one loved Waxwork and I grew up on this film. The plot is quite original...
"A group of spoiled brat rich kids are invited to a special party at a new wax museum that sprung up over night in their neighborhood. Yeah, it strikes them as a bit odd that a waxworks was opened on a residential street, but they head over anyway. Our four friends roam the museum unattended and conveniently separate from one another. The museum itself is more like a chamber of horrors than anything else with one gruesome display after another. One by one each young adult steps into a display and are then transported directly into the exact scene and forced to play the part on display. Thrust into an alternate universe each one is made to fight for his or her life in a scene that resembles a classic horror flick whether it's involving a suave Dracula or the bite of a Wolf Man. If and when they don't succeed, they then become a permanent part of the scene as the waxwork becomes their new home. Two of them become part of the Waxwork while two escape, and needless to say they have a devil of a time convincing the police that something is wrong. Will our hero be able to put an end to the evil mastermind behind the waxworks before it's too late? Or will the prophecy be fulfilled allowing the Waxworks to take over the world?"
This movie is hell of a lot of fun and hilarious. A truly underrated hidden gem from the 80's and it's quite bloody too. The acting isn't that bad actually, in the sense that they all play corn balls extremely well, and the dialogue is so silly to the point where it becomes very funny. The makeup effects here are amazing, and it's always fun to watch a man being split in half by an angry werewolf, or even a vampire eating chunky flesh from a man's half severed leg. This movie is not at all about the scare factor, but more for the fun and entertaining eye candy as well as the silly gags. Waxwork is another good Halloweenie-feel horror movie, a good popcorn flick with all your favorite horror movie creatures in it...the wolfman, the vampire, the mummy, and my favorite waxwork segment in the movie, the zombies!
The ending part of Waxwork is truly classic. We get the ultimate battle between man and monster. When all the wax figures in the museum come back to life the humans fight back. Guns blazing, sword swinging, arrows flying through the air...a total and complete massacre(all though this specific fight wasn't that bloody, just very fun to watch). Also, don't expect this fight scene to be something out of a "300" movie, remember this was just a little B movie that's from the 80's. Not to be taken that seriously.
Get the popcorn and slide this DVD in. Waxwork is a cool little bloody, fun horror movie. Highly recommended.
As some of you may already know, atmosphere is the biggest factor for me in any horror film. Dead Birds is drenched with atmosphere. It drowns in it! This is up there with some of the most atmospheric horror films ever made, and I loved every second of it. The atmosphere alone was enough to send chills down my spine. Dead Birds is indeed one spooky ass ghost story. Eerie, breezing night winds that howl within the dark fields. Rumbling thunder from the rainy moonlit sky. Soft spoken whispers in every corner of a dark and creaky old farm house. Ghastly possessions and demonic-like children hiding under the beds. All of this is done at a calm and slow pace, but that's the beauty of it. That's it's charm. It's almost hypnotic, and in many ways relaxing, but spooky at the same time. Dead Birds is a horror movie to get cozy with, underneath the blanket, on a dark and stormy night. This movie isn't like any other horror film we're use to seeing these days. Dead Birds takes us back when horror films relied more on it's settings, with the dark and cold cinematography, as well as the eerie sounds inside the old dark house. It can almost pass for an old black and white horror film, in terms of it's style and way of storytelling. Dead Birds should be a lesson to all the crappy horror films these days. This is one good movie!
Amazing story, as well as a perfect thought out back story. A simple, but subtle script. Solid performances from the whole cast. And like I mentioned before, beautiful cinematography! Plus, how can I forget...it's bloody and gory too. Dead Birds should have gotten more play than it did. It's a shame something like this goes unrecognized or even ignored by the horror community. We need more horror movies like this. Dead Birds is a real spooky treat! A solid ghost story.
**For people looking for a fast paced horror movie(or something like SAW), look else where.**
This is one of my favorite holiday movies. This was another made for TV movie back in the 80's that I caught around Halloween time. I know this movie use to be on DVD and I actually own a copy, but unfortunately as far as I know this movie is out of print. You should still see it if you can find a copy somewhere because this movie was just awesome. I know that they have used copies on Amazon but there asking for over $100 and that's just ridiculous. Maybe they have a cheap copy somewhere on EBay but I don't know for certain.
This movie has a lot of shit in it...vampires, zombies, a werewolf, and even a midget zombie(the cutest zombie I have ever seen). It's about a teenage boy named Phil, who on Halloween time, shows his classmates a slideshow of a legendary witch from their community named Lucinda. After class one of Phil's dumb friends, named Mitch, gets an idea and tells everyone that they should steal artifacts from Lucinda's three hundred year old wardrobe and wear them as costumes. Of course, a group of them feel the need to go along with Mitch's idea, and after school the teens break into an old basement where Lucinda's artifacts remain. While in the basement one of them comes across an old trunk bearing the "Grenville" seal. Nathaniel Grenville was actually the man responsible for hanging Lucinda hundreds of years ago, and saving the town from her curse. The teens now also feel that they should take the trunk along with them on their little mission to the local cemetery.
While at the cemetery the group of teens, now wearing their Halloween costumes, decide to open the trunk and inside they find Nathaniel's ring and a timeworn scroll. Melissa, one of Phil's friends, takes the scroll and begins to read the accursed incantation. Little did she know that she just raised hell from beyond the grave and everyone and everything starts to rise from their tomb. In the mist of all this chaos Phil meets a beautiful young girl named Sandy, who wears a cheerleading outfit and does cheers with her pom-poms. What Phil doesn't know at first is that Sandy is also a zombie herself, but the thing is that she's actually a good zombie.
Back at the teens Halloween party the dead are dancing it up, literally. No one at the party seems to know that the zombies are crashing it, for everyone there is dressed up in a costume. The party's biggest threat though is Lucinda, the witch/vampire that they brought back from the grave, and it's all up to Phil and his new girlfriend Sandy to save the day...or can they?
This movie is just so much fun. What a great Halloween time view this was! Don't expect any violence or anything like that because this was a made for TV movie that was viewable for the younger crowd, all though they did show some stuff that might be too frightening for them. The good thing too was, it wasn't all that cheesy(well at least not in a bad way) and this movie had plenty of spooky atmosphere to go around. If you can you have to get your hands on this movie. Hopefully they'll release it again on DVD just in time for the Halloween season, but you should really try to see this one as soon as possible. Like I said, it's one of my favorite holiday movies!
Gory and action packed remake! A very fun 80's horror/sci-fi film. Good (goofy)acting, well written, great cinematography, faced paced and filled with gooey slime and tons of bloody outrageous moments. This remake destroys the original. The effects here are very well done too, given that this was made in the 80's, and it never gets too cheesy like most horror films of it's time. The best part I have to say, is when the guy gets sucked down the drain alive, literally his whole body down one little drain. Fu**ing classic!
This movie isn't scary, so don't expect any real chills here. It's just a fun, exciting and gory horror film that's not meant to be taken too seriously. I mean come on, how can you take a movie about a killer jello-like substance running amok serious in the first place? You shouldn't. But it's still damn fun as hell and entertaining to watch. I highly recommend this movie if you haven't seen it yet!
The Innocents is a scary and atmospheric horror film. Perfect movie to watch around Halloween time! This is an excellent film. Beautiful cinematography, amazing strong performances, and a chilling story. Some creepy ass kids in this movie too. Watch this one alone at night, with the lights off. Chilling stuff!

One of my favorite old horror films! Also one of the most atmospheric horror films ever made. To me, atmosphere is definitely one of the most important qualities that's needed in a horror film, and this movie has all the atmosphere that a horror movie needs. The movie is spooky in parts as well and the story is chillingly carried out by a great script. This is the perfect movie to watch on a dark rainy night(perhaps even on Halloween), and although it might not frighten you as much, it's still a fun and entertaining as hell little popcorn flick.
"On 03 March 1692, in Whitewood, Massachusetts, the witch Elizabeth Selwyn is sentenced to be burned at the stake, and her partner Jethrow Keane asks Lucifer to save her. About three hundred years later, the college student Nan Barlow decides to spend her vacation in the town to research witchcraft. Her professor Alan Driscoll suggests Nan to lodge in the Ravens Inn, managed by Mrs. Newless. Once in the village, the naive Nan is advised by the local priest, Reverend Russell, to immediately leave the place, where devil has ruled over for three hundred years, but she decides to stay and find that she is in a coven of evil witches. Nan vanishes, and the granddaughter of Reverend Russell, Patricia Russell, pays a visit to Nan's skeptical brother, Richard Barlow, and her boyfriend Bill Maitland, and they decide to follow her steps. Once in New England, they realize that a group of immortal witches have to sacrifice two beautiful women per year, one on Candleman Eve on February 1st, and the other on the Witch Sabbath, to stay alive forever, and only the shadow of a cross would be able to destroy them."
Yes indeed. This is quite possibly my favorite horror film that's based on witchcraft. Highly Recommended!

Salem's Lot is an atmospheric creepfest directed by Tobe Hooper(The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) and written by horror master Stephen King. Actually this one is up there with one of the most atmospheric horror films I have ever seen. Some moments in here are also creepy as fucking hell(the little boy floating by the window, the evil guy in the rocking chair, and a group of vampires slowly lurking in the cellar). Salem's Lot comes close to being the ultimate vampire flick and it is definitely without a doubt one of them. The atmosphere alone in this movie is enough to give you the goosebumps, throw in one of the scariest vampire's to ever be put on screen, you got yourself one truly chilling movie.
This movie is almost flawless. The acting is unbelievably good, the script is perfect, and the cinematography is beautifully dark and shadowy. Perfect movie for a dark and stormy night.
Every horror fan needs to see this movie. I hate it when people complain how slow this movie was. Salem's Lot is at a perfect pace. Everything comes together beautifully, and any faster this movie wouldn't have worked as well as it did. The slow built up in Salem's Lot just spends all it's time building on character development, which is perfect, cause now that we've become acquainted with all the characters we become a part of the movie more so then if we knew shit about anyone. It lets us understand Salem much better and it's people as well, almost making us feel like a part of the town, therefore scaring us a whole lot more. Good thing too is that everything here is very believable and it never becomes too cheesy for a single moment. And don't expect any gore, this was a made for TV movie. Besides it didn't need any at all.
I do have one complaint about this movie though. It is a 184 minutes long...It should have been 484 minutes long, lol. I did not want this movie to end! That's how good it was!
Yes indeed. Creepy and truly atmospheric. I highly recommend this movie to any true horror fan out there.
Excellent Christmas horror movie. The atmosphere here is what really steals the show. But this movie is still eerie with the story alone as well(and that damn lady in the white dress...what a creepy bitch!) lol...and sexy too :)
Dead End is chillingly saturated in dark spooky atmosphere. The long stretched road of death, in which the supernatural await in every corner of the shadowy, cold, and dreary woods that surround around it. As the Harrington family drive to Frank's in-laws house for the Christmas season, Frank takes a shortcut that will lead the family on a detour to hell! Suddenly, the road never ends. They always end up back where they started. And to top it all off, they're being harassed by seemingly evil entities, and a mysterious black Cadillac hearse. Can the Harrington family bind together, keep their sanity, and be able to survive the horrors in the town of Marcott??
Dead End is creepy, funny, and one hell of a little thrill ride! Ghoulishly, and mystifying, dark cinematography. Good enough acting for what it is(better than most DVD premieres of it's kind), and never becomes distracting from telling it's own story(an amazing story by the way). The twists that come at the end totally blow the top off of it's roof. It's well executed and thoroughly thought out and planned(kudos to the great screenwriters!) Watch Dead End and see if you can guess what's coming next!? lol Good stuff!
Dead End plays off like a made for TV horror movie, but a better one than that. It plays off like a TV horror movie on a spin off of some kind of creepy Twilight Zone episode.
That's what Dead End is exactly like! It's like one long Twilight Zone episode...but one that's in color...oh, and one that's rated R!
Just in time for Christmas! AND Dead End is a perfect little Christmas horror movie. A great ghost story to watch on a cold and snowy night, snuggled under the blankets.
And although it has it's flaws, Dead End still is a unique little horror film, and never becomes anything less than just simple, spooky, fun entertainment. It's a precious little gem and I highly recommend this movie!
"Dead End wound up being a quality filled, cleverly humorous, classy and spine-tingling road trip to hell that should be seen by all."

"Dead End was one heck of a freakishly strange and wild ride. At times throughout the movie I thought I had it all figured out - and I did, to a point."

I thought Transylvania 6-5000 was a laugh riot. I also use to always watch this around Halloween time, and I forget what channel it was but there was this channel that use to always have something called "Shock-tober" every month of October. Does anyone else remember Shock-tober back in the 80's? Well anyway they use to always play Transylvania 6-5000 along with other films such as The Wraith, Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, The Gate, and The Blob. Wow, what a wonderful time that was...I miss Shock-tober.
"Transylvania 6-5000 is about two tabloid reporters Jack Harrison and Gil Turner who are sent to Transylvania with two choices: find the Frankenstein monster or find new jobs. But before the jumpy journalists can dig up their big story, they must first face the horrors of an extremely clumsy butler a nymphomaniac vampire and a semi-mad doctor as well as assorted mummies, werewolves and more Transylvanian oddballs. Can these two bumbling heroes unravel this monstrous mystery or are they in for some very scary surprises?"
Just for the record this movie is not scary at all, it's an all out wacky-screwball comedy. This isn't a laugh out loud like crazy humorous movie, nor is it raunchy or anything, but it's definitely funny enough to give you the giggles every few minutes as well as a few out loud belly laughs. It's also a rated PG comedy/horror movie so don't expect any nudity or foul language, or anything like that. What makes the movie so damn funny is the complete silliness of it's characters. I swear to God, the characters in this movie are so fucking retarded it's hilarious.
Take Fejos for instance, a goofy idiot played by Michael Richards(who played Kramer on Seinfeld), who taunts hotel guests and asks them to do stuff like sniff ashtrays and slip on banana peels. Fejos is actually one of the strong points of this movie and plenty of the stand out funny moments here have revolved around him. Another strong point that helps make the movie so funny are the reactions and facial expressions of Jack(played by Jeff Goldblum) and Gil(played by Ed Begley Jr.). It's funny to see how they reacted while they were in a town fully surrounded by complete idiots. And then we get the mad scientist, a Sicilian doctor named Victorio Malavacqua, who somehow goes completely mad every time he just steps out of his laboratory for a split second. Plus we get all of our favorite horror movie monsters in one setting...the wolfman, vampire, mummy, Frankenstein monster. It's just all a very silly good time.
It's a wacky movie, with many wacky characters, and a lot of wacky fun! I recommend it.
Almost as good as the original. It's not better in terms of style, but Creepshow 2 is way funnier than the first one. This movie is more of a laugh riot than anything else, and I mean that in the best way. It's not cheesy to the point where it becomes amateurish filmmaking, this director knew exactly what he was doing, using the cheese correctly making this into a hilarious little romp. He stays true to the idea of the original, and for the most part, he directs it with the same morbid texture, although not fully using the E.C. comic style as it's predecessor he still manages to pull off yet another fun and entertaining wild ride.
Every horror fan should really see this movie. If you watch this expecting anything logical, in terms of being a smart and mature horror film, then you're in for the biggest disappointment. Like the first one, or better yet like most horror films(especially from the 80's), it's not meant to be taken seriously. Especially the second time around, cause the scares here are much more minimum, but not to worry. What it lacks in fright, it makes up for in hilarious morbid insanity. You'll have a damn fun time with this movie. I certainly did, and I liked it just as much as the first one, and for slightly different reasons too. The first Creepshow had more scares than it did laughs, where as this one has more laughs than scares. Both worked fine for what they did and severed us a delicious dish of maniacally macabre gruesomeness.
I highly recommend this movie!
Funny ass memorable quotes:

"Over here lady."
Story 2: The Raft -
"Ooooh, mucho ecological, Poncho! Mucho ecological!"
"I don't believe in Oil-slicks."

Story 3: The Hitch-Hiker -

"...Some guy got creamed, that's what happened. Happens all the time."
Ben likes to strangle women and repeatedly batter a man's head wide open on a sink. Ben likes to rape a woman while the husband is forced to watch. He likes to scare old women to death, in result of an instant heart attack. He also likes to suffocate little children with pillowcases. Ben even likes to party hard.
So hard till he vomits on himself, and he even shoots down his own friend's at birthday parties!
Ben is an insanely SADISTIC serial killer...and also a celebrity!(Well, there's a first time for everything, right?)
Man Bites Dog tells the story of a small film crew who follows around a demented, but an intelligent madman named Ben, in attempt to make a true "Snuff" documentary. It turns out the crew take a likening to Ben, and they strangely connect, hitting it off on their revoltingly shameless and gory adventures, and even share laughs together. At times, Ben even seems like a civil person, the polite man in the street who stops to cheer you up. He's even a caring family member most of the times. He's humorous, and he's also loyal and loves his girlfriend...
...We know this cause we witness it all on actual footage(but keep in mind of course, this is just a mockumentary).
But of course Ben has his charm, as most serial killers do. A side that we don't see when our backs are turned, and while the unlucky one's roam the street late at night. But the difference here though, is Ben doesn't have a reason to hide his viscous side. He knows he's being filmed 24/7, and half of his friends already know he's a damn psychopathic killer. Right there you know that this movie isn't meant to be taken seriously. Actually it's part of what makes this movie so dementedly funny. Yes, Man Bites Dog is a comedy as well! A sick, and disgusting, dark and vile comedy...but a comedy that's insanely outrageous.
Ben even finds it humorous! He jokes with the film crew in the middle of his slayings, and teaches them the right techniques in murdering. Like I said before, Ben's a humorous kind of guy.(only his humor is tasteless and despicably evil)...But hell! At least he puts the "fun" in killing!
Here's where it gets even funnier...
As the film progresses, the documentary film crew start fearing for their own lives. Ben doesn't seem so friendly anymore(well I really don't think he ever gave a sh*t), but accidents start happening, and the film crew are being offed one by one as well. Still, they continue to finish the documentary! Come on now? How are you suppose to take this film seriously after that being said? But that's what's great!(keep this in mind when watching the brutal killings. I don't know, it might help you stomach it better)...lol, I doubt it though! This is still a sick and fu*king down right disturbing movie. The violence is raw. There's no shying away either. The violence is in-your-face raw, with no remorse for the viewers. This is some sick sh*t!
The acting here is solid all around, which helps make things alot...well I guess...worse(I mean that in the best way possible of course). I'm just saying it adds too much realism to the slayings, which would be hard for most people to watch. But look on the bright side...Man Bites Dog is funny as well(again with the "acting" part, in helping to make the humor more convincing and funny). Just be very OPEN MINDED when watching this...grab a vomit bag, and (try to)enjoy this sick insanity.
You've been warned!
""Man Bites Dog" is probably one of the most disturbing, horrific, disgusting and ruthless films in the history of cinema."
- moviesmademe.com
"A black comedy that's as dark as night, Man Bites Dog is a worthy successor to A Clockwork Orange as this generation's most telling and unflinching look at our views on violence."
- Filmcritic.com
"Personally, I think the film has it's moments where I was thinking to myself "Why am I enjoying this?!", but all of it is underscored with a huge exclamation point and subtle yet effective humor that softens the blow. There are times when this combination will have you rolling on the floor laughing, and other times when you'll recoil in an attempt to pander to your better judgment."
- HorrorView
"This grainy black-and-white shoestring- budget "mockumentary," about a film crew following around a professional killer, is one of the most bizarre, hilarious, and disturbing things I've ever seen."
- eFilmCritic.com
""Man Bites Dog" is realistic, almost too realistic. The film is in truth more surreal than real, but the primitive styling and shaky "amateur" camera work persuade you to believe this is a documentary. You believe the harshness seen to be reality, with nothing surreal about it. This "mocumentary" wants you to feel horrified and disgusted. If you become too agitated to watch it, the film succeeds in its goal,(if you simply laugh at it you are sick), but if you sit through the entire movie (and I would recommend you do) the film will give you closure. But remember, even if it appears real, it's done for the sake of art, and what a masterpiece it is!"
- Movie Vault
A fun and freshly original horror film. No real scares, no real gore, but this movie highly relies on heavy suspense, cool characters(one being Trickster for sure), and great atmosphere. The effects in Brainscan were cool as well, well at least for it's time and better than most horror films of the early 90's. The ending is quite mind blowing as well, and I'm pretty sure most of you will never see it coming. The biggest highlight in Brainscan is without a doubt Trickster, the wise cracking loveable villain who comes straight out of a scary video game. In some strange way, given that Trickster is the evil one, we find ourselves depending on him to come and save the day. It seems Trickster has all the right answers, and pretty much knows how to get our main character Michael(played by Edward Furlong), out of any tough opstical that crosses his path.
The acting here isn't the best, but good enough for a horror film of it's type, and never becomes too cheesy. Given the outline from the plot alone this isn't a film that should be taken too seriously...
"A lonely teenage horror-movie fan discovers a mysterious computer game that uses hypnosis to custom-tailor the game into the most terrifying experience imaginable. When he emerges from the hypnotic trance he is horrified to find evidence that the brutal murder depicted in the game actually happened - and he's the killer."
It's never dull and it's always entertaining, and that's why it succeeds on it's own intentions. The main point here was just to be fun and simply entertain, and that it certainly does. As far as the script goes, again, not the best but also not that bad. The story itself is what's freshly original and the ending just adds onto that(the originality).
Brainscan is an underrated hidden horror gem that I highly recommend to any horror fan out there.
Slither is one of the best horror movies to come out in 2006. It's quite gory, but mainly it's down right gross, and most importantly it's hilarious. This movie will have you squirming in the same way a bunch of slimy worms and roaches give you the chills, making you very itchy, and forming goosebumps all over. This movie really isn't all that scary, but it sure is hell of a lot of fun!
The best way to describe Slither would be saying "Night of the Living Dead" meets "Night of the Creeps". It has all the elements of a chilling 50's creature feature and a late night B fright flick. It's a mixture of campy sci-fi shenanigans and zombie horror. Slither pays homage to every respectably "bad" and cheesy, but always fun, underrated horror film out there. If you were to combine director William Castle with Ed Wood, and have them direct a horror film present day with a higher budget, you'd probably have something along the lines of Slither.
The performances here are solid and every character is likable, even the villain(played superbly by Michael Rooker(Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer)...boy does he sure get nasty to look at! The picture quality is tight, and the atmosphere and lighting couldn't have been better. It never becomes grainy, nor too over or underexposed. Slither is definitely not the works of some hack. James Gunn(the director) sure knows his stuff, and kind of like John Carpenter, he doesn't care about the stereotypical mainstream crap. It seems James Gunn is more in it for the passion of horror than he is for the money. It looks like we have a new upcoming horror director on our hands who might rise to the top, and I can't wait for his next movie!
James Gunn also wrote this movie himself. The script is sharp, and the dialogue is witty and very funny. I was either laughing during the film, or cringing in disgust(slimy, creepy crawly disgust). Like I said before, it's more gross than gory, but hell...when the gore comes it scores high on the graphic scale. What a gooey, fast paced, rollercoaster ride Slither is! Tons of fun!
Don't take this movie seriously when watching it cause it'll be a let down. It's pure frightful entertainment, with demented silliness, and outrageously icky moments. Slither is a ghoulishly fun popcorn flick. A horror movie that gets it right! I highly recommend it.
"The most sensationally scary-funny creep-out movie since Gremlins."
- L.A. Weekly
"Slither delivers one hell of a slime-filled good time. We need more films like this in Hollywood, sometimes you just want to throw all logic out the door, sit back and just go with the flow."
- Bloody Disgusting
"Slither is old-school gooey, slimy, silly B-movie fun."
- USA Today
"Slither might be a horror comedy but it will have you choking on your popcorn at many times throughout the movie."
- Slasherpool
"Slither is a gross, disgusting, but undeniably amusing treat laden with homages and in-jokes. "
- Los Angeles Times
"Slither was fun times in a horror retro bottle, shoveling up laughs, zany gore, outrageous concepts and enough wink-winks to horror of old to stroke the hardcore fear flick fanboy the right way."
- Arrow in the Head
"Gross-out horror comedy is my least favorite genre, but this movie's so skillful I have to take my hat off to it."
- Chicago Reader
"Slither isn't trying to be an instant classic; it isn't a serious or scary horror film. It's just trying to be a really fun popcorn movie, the kind of film that you take a date to and hold on tight as you laugh, jump, scream...and hopefully get laid after."
- Dread Central
A truly chilling creep fest of a movie. This one sends chills down my spine. Way more frightening then the original Amityville! Watch this one alone in the dark.
A good little atmospheric horror flick from horror master John Carpenter. Pretty slow, but always interesting and fun. No gore or anything, but it didn't need any. It's more just about the mood, scaring us with it's creepy overtone and some truly unusual creepy as hell characters(the bums especially). Alice Cooper plays one great ass freaky bum. Great acting, good script and great dark cinematography. Some spooky moments thrown into the mix as well(especially the dream sequences). Don't expect anything outstanding from this movie, it doesn't try to prove to be any better then it is. John Carpenter, as always, stays true to the genre, and most of all true to himself. He makes what he wants to make and he never tries to follow a newer trend, or anything that's become more popular at the time. He knows and completely understands exactly how horror works, and you should already kind of know what to expect when watching one of his films. Prince of Darkness is a horror film done right. It has the atmosphere. It has the story. Has it's characters, and has the horror! All finessed by a man who completely knows how the horror genre works. John Carpenter has created yet another great horror film. And all though it may not scare you as much, for it's not too realistically done, Prince of Darkness is still a fun and very enjoyable watch. Get the popcorn ready, hit the lights, and sit back and just enjoy. I highly recommend this movie!
Dark. Disturbing. Scary. Beautifully shot and brilliant.
As many of you probably already know, the whole movie is shot backwards. A few people that I talked to had shut this movie off in very beginning. They said that it gave them a headache, or that nothing was happening and that it made no sense. The few people who I know that actually sat through the whole thing said things like "it was too boring", or that "it wasn't shocking at all." I only know about three other people who personally love this movie like I do. Then again, I haven't sat down with too many people to watch this movie with. A lot of my friends don't even care much about the "art form" of films, let alone seriously appreciate films overall. That's another reason why I joined Flixster too, so I can finally talk to some people who are actually on the same level of film appreciation as I am. Now that I'm on this site I have found even more people who are actually into Irreversible and who understand it's brilliance. On the other hand I have read some negative reviews, and it seems that they're the same exact reasons why my friends hated it. I guess this is just a love it or hate it kind of movie. I for one loved it!
Plot -
"Events over the course of one traumatic night in Paris unfold in reverse-chronological order as the beautiful Alex is brutally raped and beaten by a stranger in the underpass. Her boyfriend and ex-lover take matters into their own hands by hiring two criminals to help them find the rapist so that they can exact revenge. A simultaneously beautiful and terrible examination of the destructive nature of cause and effect, and how time destroys everything."
I can't understand why some people didn't find this movie to be shocking. I watch a lot of hardcore, sickly difficult films all the time and this is indeed one of them. What more shock value did people want from this film?...A nine minute rape scene in 3D? This is one brutal movie. Maybe it's because some people just view this for the shock value alone and become disappointed by the overall quantity of disturbing imagery. It does seem to slow down a bit and almost come to a stop as the movie progresses. But this movie isn't just all about the violence and the gore, there's more to it here. This movie has a very strong message and it also tells a very emotional and complex story(carried along with some great cinematography). The acting in this is outstanding. Vincent Cassel's performance is truly fierce and ferocious. There's some truly powerful stuff here.
Sick and violent. This is in fact a very disturbing movie, as well as a high quality film. Highly Recommended...if you can stomach this.
A non-stop suspenseful tour de force. Once Wait Until Dark starts with the thrills it never lets up. I hope you're not a nail bitter, cause if so, after watching this one you won't have any nails left! It's hair-raising and it's sensational. Audrey Hepburn is truly nothing short of amazing. This is an outstanding, flawless, and chilling classic film.
"Audrey Hepburn is Susy Hendrix, a young blind woman living in a New York brownstone with her photographer husband, Sam. Pushed by Sam and herself to be "the world's champion blind lady," Susy is thrown a challenge when a trio of criminals discovers a child's doll filled with heroin has mysteriously found itself inside her apartment. Through multiple disguises and characters, the three baddies move in for the kill...until Susy, with the aid of young neighbor Gloria, discover their plot and are left on their own to fend for themselves."
"Where is it? Where is it? OH GOD!"
"WAIT UNTIL DARK is one of the most memorable film thrillers you could ever see. The story's complexity, the subtle direction and superlative acting all combine to put nearly every suspense film to come after it to shame. It's truly a film experience, but you'd better put your lights on."

In "The Book of Lists: Horror", the climactic heart-stopping confrontation between Audrey Hepburn and Alan Arkin is #1 on Stephen King's list.
A lot of people have found this movie boring because it relies mostly on mood and atmosphere alone to scare you. I for one was not bored by this. It sent chills down my spine. Watch this movie alone at night and judge for yourself. The score in this movie is truly haunting, and the audio sessions were ultimately frightening. There is no gore in this movie and hardly a drop of blood but it didd't need any. This movie worked even better without all of that stuff. You don't even see much in this movie. It suggests mostly everything and leaves it up to your mind to create your own fears. Everything in here worked perfectly. Great acting making it even more believable. Spooky ass cinematography with the darkest of shadows in every corner, and a chilling story carried along well by some truly creepy moments of eerie dialogue. This movie does something most horror movies don't do nowadays. It let's you put your mind to work and makes you create your own darkest illusions. Again, watch this movie alone at night...with the lights off!
Plot:
"An asbestos abatement crew wins the bid for an abandoned insane asylum. What should be a straightforward, if rather rushed, job, is complicated by the personal histories of the crew. In particular, Hank is dating Phil's old girlfriend, and Gordon's new baby seems to be unnerving him more than should be expected. Things get more complicated as would-be lawyer Mike plays the tapes from a former patient with multiple personalities, including the mysterious Simon who does not appear until Session 9, and as Hank disappears after finding some old coins."
I highly recommend this movie.

Try to see this movie if you can, it is so hard to find. It's not released on DVD yet but there are some copies floating around on the internet. I actually got a great copy of this movie that I bought at a convention a few years back. It's based on the true story of teenage Ricky Kasso aka The Acid King. He got that nick name because he use to drop several hits of acid everyday.
Here's the true story. I'll sum it up for you...
What happened was Ricky Kasso and a few of his friends, who were brainwashed by him, use to worship Satan and held seances at their friends houses. They also made animal sacrifices and they practiced the Satanic Bible. Actually, what's interesting also is that they use to hold seances in the back of the infamous "haunted" Amityville house. No shit.
Next comes the murder of one of Ricky Kasso's own friends. One night at a party when Ricky was passed out sleeping, his friend Gary Lauwers stole 10 bags of angel dust from Ricky's pocket. When Ricky found out what the kid had did, him and his other friends lured Gary into the woods with promises to give him drugs and have a party. After taking several hits of mescaline around the campfire things suddenly spun out of control. Ricky Kasso had threatened to kill Gary if he didn't say "I love Satan" and after Gary was being stabbed repeatedly all he could say was, "No, I love my mother". Ricky had stabbed Gary somewhere around 36 times, burned him on parts of his body and gouged out his eyeballs. After the murder Ricky Kasso and his other friends had bragged about it to people around the town. Eventually Ricky was caught by the police, and while waiting in his jail cell Ricky committed suicide by hanging himself.
One of his other friends also killed himself when he found out how much trouble he was actually in, and Ricky's other close friend was acquitted of second degree murder because of his mental state after doing so many drugs that night.
This movie was awesome. It's very creepy in the real life sense, being that this was all an actual true story. The acting was believable, especially Ricky Kasso played by Vincent Kartheiser, although in this movie the character's name was Ricky Cowen. There's really not that much violence here, but this movie really didn't need it. The subject matter alone was gruesome enough, especially at the end when the young kid gets murdered. I also liked how they showed a bit of a build up as to why Ricky Kasso turned out the way he did. It's like in the beginning you actually feel a little bad for Ricky, knowing that he could have gotten the help that he needed, but no one was really there for him. All that quickly changes a little later on in the film when you find yourself wanting to strangle the hell out of Vincent Kartheiser's character. Anyway, this movie is a must see! Try to find it, perhaps maybe on EBay or something.
Also, look up the real picture of Ricky Kasso. Talk about a creepy looking kid!
A beautiful, deeply eerie, and disgusting film. This controversial NC-17 movie is a small masterpiece.
Story 1:
"Hero"
Tells the story of seven-year old Richie Beacon, who kills his brutally abusive father, and disappears in a mysterious way, according to his mother.
Hero is shot in a documentary style, with interviews from people's accounts on the story and re-enactments. This story was the creepiest to me, especially the shocking and most bizarre ending. Everything in this story felt very real, and it was always convincing.
What really happened to Richie Beacon? And most of all...who was he REALLY?
Chilling stuff!
Story 2:
"Horror"
Shot in black and white, and plays off like a 50's sc-fi movie. Horror tells the story of a scientist who isolates the elixir of human sexuality, drinks it, and becomes a festering, contagious murderer. This story was fu*king gross. Disgusting and nauseating. But it was great too! It's a love story entangled with sheer terror. Very fascinating...and icky at the same time!
Story 3:
"The Homo"
Revolves around lifelong prisoner John Broom's obsession with fellow inmate Jack Bolten. Told through Broom's thoughts, much of this story within a story is communicated through flashbacks and vignettes that develop the characters of the two men.
The Homo is a depressing and revolting story. Amazing character development and storytelling, but very difficult to stomach, especially the "spitting" scene. It's sad, bleak, and uncompromising. This one will leave a bad taste in your mouth.
All these stories are told throughout and are in no specific order, although each are linked thematically to make a whole. It's a shocking, and bizarre movie, but yet has lot's of meaning. Great performances and solid storytelling, and great script. A very disturbing movie, but I highly recommend it to people who are looking for something quite different.
"Todd Haynes's "Poison" is a vision of unrelenting, febrile darkness. It presents three disparate stories in three greatly varied styles, all inspired by the work of Jean Genet, and its effect, as a whole, is like that of an especially vile infection; it moves diabolically through your system, spreading fever and nausea as it goes."
- Washington Post
"Poison weaves a trio of disparate stories into a fragmentary, postmodern triptych, one held together (however vaguely)by lurid themes of sexuality, violence, and personal revolt. The movie wants to shock, and it does."
- EW
"Poison is a very tough, queasy film, but extremely powerful and a strong feature debut for Haynes."
- Celebrity Wonder
"Many films try to be subversive, try to undermine the status quo in ways large and small (and Haynes is still up to that, to a lesser extent), but few succeed, too often ending in broad strokes or empty campiness (John Waters' films). Poison works because it is unafraid of being shocking, but still has a point to get across, and handles the balance well."
- HDFest
"Poison is a disturbing film. It will make you uncomfortable, but it also will make you think."
- Filmreference
"Part horror film, part drama, part expose, Poison is 1991's most controversial film."
- Café DVD
"Poison is a wholly original, provocative, unsettling and intelligent film that is a must-see for adventurous videophiles."
- TLA Video
Azumi and Versus is why I'm so excited to see The Midnight Meat Train. This director, Ryuhei Kitamura, has a niche for creating some kick ass style in all his movies. Azumi is loaded with tons of cool, well choreographed action. Lots of interesting(and funny) characters. Plenty of drama, lots of humor, and much stylized violence with blood spraying all over the place. This movie is great. And the final battle scene, I must say, is unbelievably breathtaking. It literally sent chills down my spine. This girl kicked some major fu**ing ass!
Azumi was originally given an NC-17 rating, and although it is pretty violent, I believe the NC-17 rating was given for a rape scene that was later cut out. The blood here does flow, but it's not like it's in your face every 5 seconds. I also believe that The Midnight Meat Train is Ryuhei Kitamura's first American made movie. I just hope it's as good as some other pervious horror reviewers make it out to be. I hear The Midnight Meat Train is suppose to be insanely crazy and twisted. Can't wait to see it!
Anyways, I highly recommend Azumi! Get your hands on this movie as soon as you could.
There are some truly creepy moments in Nightwatch. This was a well made, nail biting thriller.
Plot -
"Martin Bells is a last year law student who takes a job as the night watchman in a medical examiner's building. Although most of the time he can catch up with his studying, every hour he has to make the rounds through the complex, including entering the morgue. There, recent murder victims are occasionally brought in by Inspector Cray, a gruff detective who's investigating a serial murder spree along with his partner, Bill Davis.
Martin's girlfriend, Katherine, isn't crazy about his new job, while his pal and fellow law student, James Coleman, doesn't think that the job or either of their lives is that exciting anymore. Believing that they should live life on the edge, James gets Martin to agree to a "game" of challenges where either of the two will test the other's nerves and bravado. One of them involves soliciting a prostitute, Joyce, for various sexual and nonsexual activities. Soon, however, some strange events begin occurring in the morgue and Martin wonders if his friend is behind them, especially when the events make Martin look like the prime suspect for the serial murder spree. As things get progressively worse, Martin doesn't know whom to trust or whether the recent occurrences are just part of a game or are indeed real and potentially quite dangerous."
The acting in this is good, but it's quite awkward. The dialogue is also a little strange, but all of this does not point to a bad movie. As a matter of fact it's what makes the movie so unique and stand out in a very good way. The scenes in the beginning when Martin is working at the medical building alone at night are extremely chilling and very eerie. This is the kind of "guess who done it" thriller that will have you guessing till the very end.
Some bloody moments as well, and the killer plays a good ass psychopath. Great movie, I highly recommend it!
This is the best Larry Clark film ever. I just love this movie. It's a sick, disturbing and depressing story of blind and troubled youth down in a suburb west of Fort Lauderdale, Florida and it's all true. This film is based on the harrowing true story of the murder of teenager Bobby Kent.
The True Story -
"Kent and Puccio had known each other since third grade, had lived on the same block in Broward County since that time, and were good friends as adults. Bad blood, however, existed between the two. Puccio felt "ill-will and hatred" towards Kent because Kent would bully and pummel him. Both sets of parents were wary of the friendship as well. Marty's parents, Martin Sr. and Veronica Puccio, were cautious because Marty often returned from being with Bobby with bruises or bleeding. Fred Kent thought of Marty as a wayward slacker who had no future (Marty was a high school dropout) and felt the friendship with his son would destroy the future he was helping Bobby build. Both boys were avid steroid users which, according to testimonial accounts, significantly contributed to Kent's erratic aggressive behavior.
Kent and Puccio had also delved into making homosexual porn movies in the hopes they could sell them to local shops to earn extra money. Neither Kent nor Puccio actually participated in these movies, but rather allegedly directed them and either coaxed or forced Lawrence Shafer, a Florida man in his early 40's to commit lewd acts on camera. Kent tried to peddle the movie, entitled Rough Boys, to porn shops across south Florida. However, none took him up on the offer due to the poor audio and video quality as well as the lack of any sellable sexual activities in the film beyond Shafer dancing nude and playing with a dildo.
For a few weeks prior to his death, Kent dated Ali Willis, best friend of Puccio's girlfriend, Lisa Connelly. Willis moved back with her parents in Palm Bay, Florida, and broke up with him after Kent allegedly forced Willis to watch a graphic homosexual porn movie while he had rough sexual intercourse with her. Kent reportedly said he was going to murder her and smother her baby unless she returned to Broward County to date him. Willis returned and she and Connelly concocted a plan to kill Kent. The girls obtained a gun (Connelly's mother's gun which Lisa stole from her for that night) and lured Kent to a rock pit in west Broward but backed out at the last minute.
The plan was for Willis to seduce Kent and begin having sex with him. While this was happening, Connelly would sneak up behind Kent and shoot him. Connelly allegedly later said that she did not shoot Kent because the police can trace bullet fragments to the gun they originally came from.
The next day a wider circle of friends conspired to kill Kent, including the newly recruited Derek Kaufman who the group heard through friends was a gang leader and mafia hitman. Prior to meeting the group, Kaufman had no association with Kent, Puccio or any other member. The group again lured Kent to the rock pit in an undeveloped area in Western Broward County, Florida. Puccio had told Kent that they were going to race cars and that Willis wanted to have sex with him again. That night, despite blistering Florida summer heat and humidity, Puccio was dressed in black jeans and a black trench coat with a red bandana tied around his head. According to Willis, "Marty came out of his house looking like Rambo."
Sometime around midnight, Willis led Kent away from the group down by a canal that ran up against the area. Heather Swallers then was instructed by Derek Kaufman to join them and figure out if Kent suspected anything. If she felt he didn't, Kaufman told her to ask Kent if there were any alligators in the canal. Once she did that, the murder would commence. Swallers asked Kent if the canal had any alligators and Kent sarcastically told her she should go skinny dipping and find out for herself. Almost immediately after, Donny Semenec charged Kent and stabbed him from behind in his neck. Kent whirled around and called out to Puccio for help. Puccio then stabbed him in the abdomen, and when Kent tried to flee, Semenec, Kaufman, and Puccio tackled him and stabbed and beat him. Several times during the murder, Kent pleaded and begged Puccio for mercy, telling his friend "I'm sorry! Marty, whatever I did, I'm sorry!" but Puccio continued. While Kent was down, Puccio cut his throat and hit his head against the ground so hard he fractured a vertebra in Kent's neck.
Kaufman delivered the final blow with a weighted baseball bat to the head. Kent's body was then dumped into a canal."
Sick, sick, sick movie. Well acted and powerful. Do not watch this film if you are easily offended. But if you do decide to see this movie make sure that you get the UNRATED version, it's a big difference. Before seeing this you should already know what you're getting yourself into. This is a Larry Clark film for Christ sakes, the director of "KIDS", it's not going to be a fun watch at all. Bobby Kent did not deserve to die, even though what he did was unbelievable wrong, these kids should have not taken justice into their own hands. It also goes to show you how little involved some parents are with their kids. Such a shame. Go and see this movie as soon as you can, highly recommended!
What a great family film...LOL, are you kidding me? Don't let the cover fool you, this is one fucked up movie! Murder, rape, suicide, depravity, child molestation. This movie is like "American Beauty" but on crack. Sick thing too is that this movie is actually funny as well, but it's the kind of laughter that you feel guilty making. This is one of the darkest comedies I have ever seen. This film was directed by Todd Solondz, the same man who brought you "Welcome to the Dollhouse" and judging on his films, sort of like Larry Clark, I wonder what kind of sick life Todd had lived and if any of this is from his past experiences.
"The story mostly revolves around a family and it's three daughters. Helen, the eldest sister, a successful author who is adored and envied by everyone she knows, but also has the sick fascination with getting raped. Trish, the middle sister, an upper middle class housewife happily married to psychiatrist Bill Maplewood and has three children. There's one problem. Bill likes little boys and he masturbates to teeny bopper magazines. Bill also has crush on his son's 11-year-old friend and he will do anything that it takes to get the pleasure that he needs from him. Joy, the youngest sister, is seen by her family as overly sensitive and lacking direction. Because of her loneliness Joy will sleep with anyone who will give her the time of day, including men who will use her and steal money from her.
Then there's their parents, Mona and Lenny, who are separating after 40 years of marriage. Lenny is bored with his marriage, but does not want to start another relationship; he simply "wants to be alone." As Mona copes with being single during her twilight years, Lenny tries to rekindle his enthusiasm for life by having an affair with a neighbor. There's also Allen, played by Philip Seymour Hoffman, a pervert who makes obscene phone calls to women while he masturbates, and likes sticking post cards on the wall with his own semen."
Expecting that the MPAA would brand this movie with an NC-17 rating, which would make distribution difficult, the filmmakers opted not to submit the film for rating, hence sealing limited distribution and difficulty in advertising.
Toward the end of this film there is a conversation between Bill Maplewood, the child molester, and his 11-year-old son Billy. Let me tell you, this conversation was so sickly intense that it send chills down my spine. I don't know how the hell they got such a little kid to go along with such a disgusting and vile conversation, but he did play it off extremely well. It was scary and shocking. You have to listen to what the father say's to his son, watch it and you'll know exactly what I'm talking about.
This movie is great. Dark and twisted, but great. Highly recommended if you can stomach this kind of thing(but don't worry, most of the stuff is just suggested).
Filmed where I live. And not far from the truth...at all(at least for some people anyway). I remember at the time this was first released, and I remember me and all my friends not being shocked by this movie. Not the least bit. We just found KIDS to be...well...very truthful. I know it may sound despicable, and yes I now agree, but what part of "youth" is a fairy tale anyway?
In fact though, "KIDS" is a SCARY movie. There's nothing scarier than the truth. And yes, now that I'm older, I watch KIDS and I find it to be...disturbing, raw, ugly, but always, and most of all, powerful!
I'm also tired of people complaining about the "pornographic" part of KIDS. These are the same people who knew it was rated "NC-17", or who have heard of it's controversy, or knew of the film's subtext. If a film is "NC-17" or "UNRATED" or is known for being controversial, AND if "pornography" makes you squirm, than stay away from these kind of films in the first place. Because chances are it's going to really exploit something, whether it be sexuality or not, given the MPAA rating or such a reputation. So why even bother watching if you're going to overly judge something of that nature, and let that sort of material "alone" ruin the movie's overall significant theme? These are also the same people in which pornography, but won't admit it of course, is a part of their lives, in one way or another. So get over it! KIDS uses "sex" to tell a story, yes we see that. That alone is going to make you hate this movie? Listen, if the movie sucks than it sucks, but judge the movie by it's whole, not cause it has an element of being overly exploitive. A movie can exploit and still be a fantastic movie. If you can't see KIDS for what it is, than "sex" obviously bothers you that much, where you can't distinguish art from true, full blown, pornography. This is a movie right?...Or is it a porno?...Or am I mistaken?? Come on now, give me a break.
Every artist has his or her own methods, and ways, of expression. Larry Clark uses sex. But this only makes his movies stand out and differ from others. That doesn't mean all of his movies all of a sudden suck. I mean, yes, it could suck. But just because he uses "sex"?? Sex aside, what about the story? Judge it for that. Judge it for it's technical standpoint, character development, it's own message and theme. Larry Clark is just telling the truth here, and because he tells his stories in such a horrifyingly honest way, than "sex" might just have to be a part of it.
Here, let me make it easier on you...
KIDS is NC-17...sex might be involved!(BUT THIS IS NOT A PORNO FILM) lol
Now you know what you're getting into.
I highly recommend this movie. Excellent film. Like I said before...it's "disturbing, raw, ugly, but always, and most of all, powerful!"

This is such a great emotional and powerful film. This was a made for TV movie that I first caught when they premiered it on Showtime. It's about a shooting that might possibly take place at a troubled teenagers local high school, and unlike the movie "Elephant" this one gives us more insight as to why the troubled teens want to go along with it and focuses a lot more on their emotions. Do not watch this movie if you get depressed easily, because trust me this one is a downer. On the other hand it might actually help you better understand that there are always two sides of the story, and even though these teen offenders wanted to commit such a horrible act, they too were victims as well. Two wrongs do not make a right, and shooting up a school is totally immoral and unjustifiable, but this movie did show that the troubled teens still indeed had much innocence hidden somewhere inside them.
Ben Foster is amazing in this movie. His character in the film goes by the name of Trevor Adams, who was recently suspended from his school after he had made a bomb threat. The other teenagers would constantly pick on Trevor, making his life a living hell, but not so much after he returned to his school again. Because of his previous threat, Trevor had put a lot of fear into many of the students, which led them to kind of stay away from Trevor. The only person in the school who seems to understand Trevor is a film teacher named Val Duncan, who asks Trevor to star in a school play about school violence, something that Trevor seems to know a little about. There is also a new girl in school who seems to take a likening in Trevor, and even tries reaching out to him. But there are still things in Trevor's life that he can't escape and when another group of troubled teens, who also get picked on and call themselves "Trogs", start battling it out with the jocks they ask Trevor that he join them. Trevor's now torn from his decision between joining the Trogs or listening to his film teacher's helpful advice. The big problem for Trevor now is that the Trogs actually plan on shooting up their high school and killing all the trouble making jocks.
Watching Ben Foster's character in this movie I swear it's like you can almost feel his pain. He plays it so damn well and I never knew when the hell his character was just going to snap with fucking rage. You can tell that his character in the movie was really a good kid at heart, but sadly the people around him just made his life a living hell (which he records on his video camera by the way). The other troubled teens also play a very good part, and believe it or not, you might actually find yourself looking up to these kids at certain points. Everything that these kids go through is just so sad. Again, this movie is very depressing but you should all check it out if you can.
By the way, this movie is actually based on a school play and they show it to students in many, many high schools. There is a great message that's told through the play, as well as in the movie.
Sick ass film to the extreme. I am not kidding. This is a another hard film to get a hold of, but if you can try to find it. This is another Larry Clark film, the director of "Kids", and it's also his most deranged film yet. Vile and depressing. I feel guilty even owning this movie(you can find a few of copies of this online), but I bought mine at a horror convention. I don't even know if I should really recommend this one, but for those of you who can stomach it, go and see this now! No matter how sick it is this is still a very good movie. A very realistic and very honest film. The only reason why I didn't give this a higher rating is because this movie makes me feel too depressed and it ruins my day whenever I watch it.
"Ken Park focuses on several teenagers and their tormented home lives. Shawn seems to be the most conventional. Tate is brimming with psychotic rage; Claude is habitually harassed by his brutish father and coddled, rather uncomfortably, by his enormously pregnant mother. Peaches looks after her devoutly religious father, but yearns for freedom. They're all rather tight, or so they claim. But they spend precious little time together and none of them seems to know much about one another's family lives. This bizarre dichotomy underscores their alienation # the result of suburban ennui, a teenager's inherent sense of melodrama, and the disturbing nature of their home environments."

lol...Good stuff! See this movie and judge for yourself. Let me know what you think.
Josh Hartnett is an evil fu*k in this, and he plays it well. This is a fascinating, and quite disturbing "teen" look at William Shakespeare's 'Othello'. It's deep, dark, and wicked...and also cruel at times. The performances are solid, and convincing. The script is unique and well thought out(the dialogue is not in typical Shakespearean style). The movie also flows at a great pace, and never falls flat. It always keeps you interested.
Josh Hartnett almost comes off like the anti-Christ. His plans are malicious, down right evil, and destructive. He never shows signs of remorse or any feelings of gratification, even after he succeeds in destroying one's hopes and dreams. It makes you think if Josh Hartnett's character ever had a soul. Was he always this way? Or did something happen, some sort of horrible turning point in his life? But, we don't get any explanation. His jealousy and rage is the only thing that's on display here. And because of that, his character becomes even creepier. Simply not knowing the beginning of his cause leaves it to our imagination, which can be the scariest thing, and also seeing how fu*ked up he is, only the darkest of things can be the result.
"All my life I always wanted to fly. I always wanted to live like a hawk. I know you're not supposed to be jealous of anything, but...to take flight, to soar above everything and everyone, now that's living."
- Hugo(Josh Hartnett)
.....Again...where did this jealousy, emptiness, and animosity really come from? Creepy, cause there are some others out there who really feel this way.
Lives do get crushed in this movie...destroyed...and things do go to the point of no return. This is not a happy, feel good movie. It's a depressing and bitter film. And like I said before...it's quite disturbing. But I highly recommend it.
"***1/2 So now here is ''O,'' a good film for most of the way, and then a powerful film at the end, when, in the traditional Shakespearean manner, all of the plot threads come together, the victims are killed, the survivors mourn, and life goes on. It is clearly established that Hugo is a psychopath, and that his allies are victims of that high school disease that encourages the unpopular to do anything in order to be accepted. Those who think this film will inspire events like Columbine should ask themselves how often audiences want to be like the despised villain."
- Roger Ebert
"**** Sensitive and vivid response to the tangled issues of teen violence, race and self-esteem."
- Seattle Post-Intelligencer
"***1/2 Exceptionally intelligent and powerful contemporary adaptation."
- New York Post
"*** Artful and emotionally compelling."
- USA Today
"***1/2 A sign of O's effectiveness is that it works regardless of whether you know Shakespeare's play."
- Chicago Tribune
"*** This is a serious and well-acted drama, not a jokey ripoff, whose relevance (however distant) to Columbine is a plus."
- New York Daily News
"*** To an astonishing degree, O gets the tragic Shakespeare mood, that somber stentorian passion born of hidden slivers of ambition and betrayal."
- Entertainment Weekly
"*** O has one advantage over "Othello" -- since it's a new movie, not a classic, it has the power to surprise."
- San Francisco Chronicle
"*** Essential to the success it manages is Hartnett's low-key, charismatic performance -- cool, withholding, compelling. The triumph of his insinuating Hugo/Iago is how plausible he is, how he manages to convincingly inject poison in so many minds without seeming to be trying."
- Los Angeles Times
Meet the lieutenant. A gambling addicted, perverted, and angry junkie. He likes to smoke crack, steals cocaine from crime scenes, screws over connected bookies, dances with prostitutes completely naked, and masturbates in front of young innocent teenage girls. He's also investigating the rape and torture of a seventeen year old nun, who's perpetrators inserted a crucifix eleven centimeters into her vaginal aperture, breaking the hymen membrane. They also used a sharp object to carve a cross between her shoulder blades and after they were done with her they took a crap on the church altar.
Does this sound sick to you? Well it's because this movie is sick.
Harvey Keitel plays the lieutenant, making a powerhouse performance and giving it his all. He even bares it all...literally. An interesting thing about this movie too is that, in one particular scene, we actually sympathize with the lieutenant. I shit you not. There's this one scene in the church when Harvey Keitel is crying, praying to Jesus, and we can see how much pain he's in and how much he regrets everything that he's doing. He was dealt a harsh hand in life and those drugs he did didn't make it any easier, but all in all he was still just a dirty scumbag. My sympathy for him couldn't last that long anyway for I kept remembering that one shocking and disgusting scene, when he pulls two teenage girls over for a broken taillight, and sexual humiliates them to the max.
Religion and faith also play a big part in this movie. Since the lieutenant is investigating the rape of a nun his own personal demons come into question and he begins to learn the true meaning of forgiveness within himself and for the perpetrators of this ghastly crime. It's like a "what would Jesus do?" kind of thing, but of course sometimes, we all can't forgive as Jesus would. Suddenly we find ourselves counting on the lieutenant to do the right thing, to cause punishment on the lowlifes who raped the nun, and to save the day. It's the power within the true concept of forgiveness that makes the ending here a total shocker, and it will quite possibly leave you pissed off to the extreme. But what does that say about ourselves? Should we be more forgiving to people no matter what they do? I for one lean toward NO. I'm sorry but I could never be forgiving to a person who had raped and tortured someone. Watch this movie and judge for yourself.
Premiere voted this movie as one of "The 25 Most Dangerous Movies", and it's rated NC-17 as well. If you rent this movie make sure you get the NC-17 version. It's a big difference and there's 5 full minutes more of disturbing shit. Highly recommended(if you can stomach this).
Amazingly structured, beautifully shot, and brilliant, straightforward and honest dialogue. Storytelling is dark humored, luridly amusing and entertaining, and funny as hell in the demented sense. It's sharp, perversely genuine, witty and brutally forthright. Avoid the "R" rating at all cost and watch this in it's true form, RENT THE UNRATED VERSION!
"Fiction"
Vi is a hip college teenager who allows herself to be exploited and abused by any guy, including her writing professor, in order to get inspiration for her creative writing class.
- In my eyes, this story seems to me it would be more on the "Non-fiction" side. But you can be the judge.
"Non-fiction"
Toby Oxman is a hapless loser/shoe salesman who wants to be a famous documentary filmmaker. For his first project, Toby explores the dysfunctional Livingston family, focusing mostly on the oldest son Scooby, an alienated, hates-the-world, ticking-time-bomb, bisexual, high school student with dreams of being famous.
- Strange how this story is "Non-fiction", but hell, I love it's eccentricity. Just makes the movie more intriguing.
Storytelling is disturbing, but it's always fun! Coming from the guy who directed "Welcome to the Dollhouse" you should already know what kind of material to expect. Todd Solondz is a great director, always with a strange and twisted, but interesting outlook on life. He's an amazing artist.
I highly recommend Storytelling.
"A masterful comedy that will divide audiences, but it left me laughing hysterically. I hope that doesn't make you think I'm a sick bastard, but if so, piss off."
- Film Threat
"I saw it a third time. By then I had moved beyond the immediate shock of the material and was able to focus on what a well-made film it was; how concisely Solondz gets the effects he's after."
- Roger Ebert
"Solondz has finally made a movie that isn't just offensive -- it also happens to be good. He's still shouting, still violating our politically correct sensibilities, but the shocks now have thematic purpose. They don't just titillate, they resonate."
- The Globe and Mail
"The leanest and meanest of Solondz's misanthropic comedies, feasts on the anguish of adolescence and confusion of college -- white suburban-style."
- Village Voice
"Almost as uncompromising, and sometimes as funny, as "Dollhouse" or "Happiness.""
- Chicago Tribune
"It's extremely well played and often very funny. But beware: Solondz uses humor as a booby trap, so be careful what you laugh at."
- TV Guide
"A movie that advances the career of a demonstrably gifted filmmaker, a fearlessly funny movie whose laughs draw blood, a bracingly provocative movie that won't apologize for its bad temper."
- Rolling Stone
Depressing, unsettling, and chilling to the bone. This is the true story of Pauline Parker and Juliet Hulme, who's friendship became an obsession and an escape into a fantasy beyond any imagination, which led them to murder Pauline's mother, by bludgeoning her to death after she became an interference in ruining their perfect relationship.
This movie is haunting...and deeply, deeply disturbing! Heavenly Creatures will bring you down. It not only portrays the events which took place, but it also takes you deep in depth through the minds of these sick, obsessed, and delusional, lost little girls.
The performances here are simply unforgettable and the cinematography is flawless.

The trial was a sensational affair, with speculation about their possible lesbianism and insanity. The girls were convicted on August 30, 1954, and each of them spent five years in prison. They were released with the condition that they never contact each other again. To this day, they have not contacted each other.
This is top notch, Grade "A" filmmaking. Heavenly Creatures is a dark, and nightmarish masterpiece.
"One of the most genuinely disturbing films I have ever seen."

"What makes Jackson's film enthralling and frightening is the way it shows these two unhappy girls, creating an alternative world so safe and attractive they thought it was worth killing for."

"A dark, astounding film from Peter Jackson, showing his mastery of blending fact and fantasy. A deserved winner of Venice Festival's Silver Lion and Toronto Fest's Critics Award. Along with Tarantino's Pulp Fiction, this is 1994's most audacious film."

"Revealed in unforgettable fashion by a capable director, the events that unfold in this film are not easily forgotten."

Have you ever been so mad at one point where you just felt like hurting someone? I'm sure at one point in your life you have, I think it's quite normal for human beings to feel this way from time to time. This movie is about Lyle Jensen(played by one of my favorite actors, Joseph Gordon-Levitt), who gets committed to a juvenile wing of a mental institution after he beats a kid with a baseball bat during a game. Apparently the victim would always pick on Lyle and would never leave him alone, of course not so much anymore after Lyle had beat him up with a baseball bat. Inside the juvenile center we meet another group of troubled and angry teens with similar problems as Lyle, and It just so happens that Lyle even meets a girl that he might actually be interested in.
Kind of like "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" the troubled teens have round table discussions with a doctor named David Monroe. This doctor really connects with the kids, and it seems like he's the only person that they can talk to. There is unfortunately this one kid in the juvenile center that Lyle does not get along with. A kid named Michael, who loves hip-hop and lives to only respect his "homeboys", is giving Lyle a hard time. Lyle does make a few new friends though, one being Chad, a boy who likes smoking marijuana and listening to heavy rock music, and another boy named Kenny who's been sexually abused by a family member. Through the round table discussions we get a chance to understand these kids better and we can see that, although they caused pain on others, they too were victims as well.
Manic is a very well made and emotional film. Great acting and great script. There were actually some parts in this movie that made me want to bring out a little rage within myself, especially the part when the doctor flips out on the kids or when the kids are head banging their angry out to heavy metal music. I really felt these characters to the bone and I could even relate to some. Everything in this film is shot documentary style and it's all hand held, which gives this movie an even more realistic feel to it. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is absolutely amazing in this and his character actually becomes the hero figure of the movie, and we find ourselves strangely looking up to him. Great movie, I highly recommend this!
Fu*king hilarious. Deep and emotional. Other than "Scream", this is Matthew Lillard's best performance.
"Two punks live in Salt Lake City. The film covers their all-day routine. The realism of the character-narrated movie may be discussed. One of the punks gets ill, stays in hospital for three weeks, comes out again. Three parties are covered and one concert including a fight between punks, rednecks and others."
Matthew Lillard plays the punk Stevo. It's a character I'm sure in many ways we might relate to. He's filled with anger and rage, and has quite the story to tell here(one in which he narrates). His best friend Bob has a drug problem, and loves to drink. Bob, as well, is angry with society. Hell, all of Stevo's friends are angry. But all these characters are likeable, they're funny, and they shine. Every performance here is solid. The direction and editing are well executed, and this movie even has a great soundtrack.
The ending is where it gets most emotional. What a powerful and moving ending! It's depressing, but it has a message, one that helps Stevo open his eyes. Maybe without such a tragic event he would have never changed(although we do see some signs of regret throughout the movie). Everything Stevo has to say absorbs in us, it lingers, and it always makes us think. His performance is ferocious, it's like a speeding train that's about to collide, it's forceful, fast and vigorous. He's full of rage, but never becomes a hateful character. It's one that we study, take in and learn from, and grow to love.
All the characters are also downright hilarious. This movie had me cracking up. It's good to have a movie with such a deep outlook, and a great sense of humor at the same time. SLC Punk sure knows how to have fun with all of it's characters. The biggest highlight for me, in terms of comedy, would be when Sean(played by Devon Sawa) goes in for a brief, but outrageous, job interview. I remember first seeing this, and after watching that specific scene, I couldn't breath from laughter. He has "FU" scribbled on his jacket and he's screaming at the poor lady who's in retail. Fu*king priceless moment! Another funny character would be Mark, the crazy, psychopathic(so it seems), gun swinging, and always misunderstood foreign guy. What a laugh riot!
Funniest scene with Mark is when he's talking to Stevo about his new water bed...
Mark: This one is a water bed. But it's not a normal water bed, because a normal one goes like this. Lots of waves. Funny thing is, this one doesn't have any waves.
Stevo: Well, why didn't you just buy a normal mattress...that doesn't have waves?
Mark: (thinks for a moment)...This one doesn't have waves.
That was another scene that had me cracking up, even days after I've seen this movie. I'd just be sitting there with someone, and I'd remember that scene, and just start laughing. No one of course at the time knew what the hell I was laughing at, and all I could tell them was, "Just go see that movie!" That specific scene reminded me much of the same scene that was in "This is Spinal Tap". And for those who have seen it know exactly what I'm talking about. The part in This is Spinal Tap when Nigel says "These go to eleven." It's just so stupid to see people when their not actually paying attention, and give you the dumbest, but most subtle response to your question. It's hilarious to me.
All the characters are great and there's just so many funny moments. But it's always true and honest, with the conception and form, of each character's passion to rebel. At least there's something to be said with SLC Punk, something that's worth taking into consideration. It hardly falls flat, and it's always smart and entertaining. A fast, fun, and furious ride down the path of some young mischievous punkers. I highly recommend SLC Punk!
"*** When people adopt a fearful and aggressive personal style, we forget that somewhere inside, hidden by the punk look, the haircuts, the body piercing, the chains, the tattoos or the gang regalia, is a person who basically just wants to be loved and understood. Telling the world to go to hell is often the response of people who believe the world has told them to go to hell. James Merendino's ``SLC Punk!'' knows that, and the essential sweetness of its hero is what makes the movie more than just an attempt to shock."
- Roger Ebert
An outrageous gorefest with tons of silly hilarious humor. This movie only got a limited release, and let me tell you, it's way better than most of the shitty horror films that are getting a wide theatrical release these days. This movie is the bomb! Adam Green(the director), knows his horror and really knows how to deliver in this movie. He's no hack. He knows and understands exactly what he's doing. We need a lot more horror films from Adam Green, he just might actually be able to put the genre back on track.
Lets talk about some of the little ingredients that make the horror genre work. What makes horror fun?
Atmosphere? Check! Hatchet has plenty of great atmosphere.
Nudity?(Come on now! It's a horror movie for Christ sakes!) Hatchet has plenty of obligatory tit shots, lol.
Overdramatic acting? Check! Hatchet has plenty. But not in a bad way. The acting here is actually very good for what it is. It was suppose to be silly, making us laugh even more and everyone here did a great job with the material.
A sense of humor? Check! Hatchet does not take itself seriously(thank God). It's a laugh riot.
Violence and Gore? Check! Check! Check! Hatchet is a bloodbath.
In closing statement, Hatchet might just be one of the best horror movies to come out in 2006. I highly recommend this movie for any true horror fan!
Don't Go To Sleep (1982) is a very hard movie to get a hold of. There is no DVD release yet for this movie, but there are copies floating around the internet. This was a made for TV movie and let me tell you, this scared the crap out of me back in the day. What a creepy ass movie this was.
The movie is about a family of four, the parents and their two children, who move into a new home and try to start their life over after the death of their oldest daughter Jennifer, which resulted from a freak car explosion. The two other young kids, who happened to survive the car explosion, are Mary and her brother Kevin. The house that the family moved into belongs to Bernice, which is Mary and Kevin's grandmother. Everything seems fine at first but the terror begins when Mary starts hearing her deceased sister Jennifer calling for her from underneath the bed. Of course it turns out that Mary's parents don't believe her and they even blame her younger brother Kevin for scaring Mary. Little did they know that Kevin was indeed an innocent bystander and the voices that Mary was hearing might actually really be coming from her dead sister Jennifer.
Things get even worse from here and the ghost of Jennifer now actually becomes visible to Mary. Jennifer's ghost becomes Mary's new playmate, and there's nothing or nobody that will stand in their way because Mary will make sure of that. After a few days of hanging out with her deceased sister, Jennifer tells Mary of a new plan that she has. She tells Mary that she must kill her family off one by one, or else they can no longer be together. Mary, scared to loose her older sister again, decides that this plan might just be a good idea and from here on is where things start becoming very deadly. Mary's family start slowly dropping like flies, but in the beginning it's not really visible to who is really killing them. And here's where the question lies...is Mary the one actually killing her family off one by one, or is it really the ghost of her dead sister Jennifer?
This movie was very eerie. There is no violence or anything like that, being that it was a made for TV movie, but the things that they suggested I'm surprised that they got away with that much. The acting isn't the greatest, but what do you expect from a made for TV horror movie? It was good enough for what it was and it never gets too unbearably cheesy. The voices that came from underneath Mary's bed were scary as hell, and Jennifer's ghost was truly spine tingling. The story was also very well told, and what's even creepiest out of the whole thing was the ending that left me sleeping with the lights on (of course I was younger at the time), but it still packs a punch.
This movie is very hard to find and as I said it isn't officially released on DVD yet. If you really want to see this movie just look around for a copy on the internet, but good luck finding it. The only reason why I have it is because I bought a copy from a horror convention, and luckily it was very good quality. Anyways, you should really try to see this movie.
