Princess Mononoke (Mononoke-hime) - PG-13 A wonderful tale from another time and place, told with great talent and amazing imagination. And even if the tale is set in the Medieval Japan, its message is timely, maybe more than timely, perhaps timeless. There's an enchanted forest, populated with fantastic creatures, some cute and harmless, some beautiful beyond words, others fierce and frightening, giant beasts like wild boars and white wolves, nature gods, spirits and demons. This magic place is about to disappear in the name of progress, because man's greed, selfishness and desire to expand. But this is more than a fable about man vs. nature, the story is extremely complex and unpredictable until the very end, conflicts are generated by the interaction of different intriguing characters with different agendas. In the end, there are no villains, just protagonists and antagonists, the characters have nuances and contradictions, they are not plain black and white, everyone is doing what he/she thinks is the best thing.Scenes of chilling violence are followed by scenes of breathtaking beauty, the animation is great and nicely detailed, the music is beautiful...what can you ask more?Princess Mononoke is one of the best animations ever created! A Clockwork Orange - R Watching this movie was like riding an insane roller coaster with breathtaking ups and downs, short funny sequences followed by shocking and disturbing images, humorous absurd Monty Python-esque scenes followed by strange paranoid visions of a Kafkian/Orwellian-type future, all wrapped up in the chords of Beethoven's fine music and accompanied by Shakespearean-like dialogue mixed with common expressions and slang.I think the movie resembles its main character.Alex is a good looking, charming, bold young man, with a passion for Beethoven but he's also a despicable being, ruthless, aggressive and vicious,a psychopath who enjoys violence in all its forms...until the Ludovico treatment. Brainwashed, mentally castrated, conditioned to feel nausea and pain whenever he has a violent or sexual impulse but unable to make moral choices,he becomes a vulnerable, helpless man,a big bad wolf turned into an innocent naive lamb.Malcolm McDowell was perfect for the role,he had the right look,a perverted mix of childish ingenuity and chilling cruelty,he played it great! It's a story about crime and punishment, redemption and free will (there is no redemption without free will),good and evil (right and wrong),moral and immoral behavior,a story about the vicious circle of violence-the aggressor becomes victim, the victims becomes aggressors and so on,an intriguing blend of satire, social commentary, allegory, drama,sci-fi and absurd black comedy. It was highly controversial when released, its impact has been diminished over the years, there are far more disturbing movies out there today but it's still a great movie,I can't say I enjoyed it or disliked it...it made me think about human nature and society and it surely was an experience to remember... The Animatrix - Unrated A compelling collection of short stories,9 little gems of 3D (Final Flight of the Osiris) and 2D animation featuring the history of the machines, their transition from oppressed to oppressors, the escalation of the conflict between man and machine until the forced symbiosis, the life inside the Matrix and outside of it. They are not connected to each other (except for two of them),they all have their own unique visual style, interesting plots and twists, appealing characters that you want to know more about. My favourite are the black and white Detective Story (a 50's-like private detective is hired to track down a hacker named Trinity),Beyond (an error occurred in the Matrix is causing paranormal-type effects in a so called 'haunted house') and Final Flight of the Osiris. Beautiful, fascinating, thrilling, powerful, sad, disturbing windows/doors to an alternative reality,a gift and a must see for every Matrix fan. September 12, 2008

Domino - R Frankly,I was expecting something different,an explosive blend of action and some comedy, violent but fun, dynamic and entertaining...I was expecting to fully enjoy this movie about a tough rebel girl who becomes a successful bounty hunter, with lots of guns and explosions,a stellar cast and fairly good performances...What went wrong then? Why didn't I liked it?A confuse & confusing story that leaps around in time and logic like a hyperactive "ferret on crystal meth",a mixed bag of subplots,an overused ending,a hotchpotch of genres, flashbacks, wacky camera angles, unexpected cuts, slow motion, fast motion, stop motion, dizzying zooming in & out, different colours and exposures, annoying repetitive lines...make this ride an overwhelming nauseating and tiring experience.I really struggled to watch it to the end. The Dark Crystal - PG There's a whole world there, created with full attention paid to the tiniest detail,an amazing world full of stunning landscapes, fantastic creatures and wonderful characters, some cute and appealing, some fierce and repulsive. The story it's a standard quest tale ( an ancient prophecy,a hero, a cracked crystal that must be healed or darkness will reign forever) but one can discover multiple layers of meanings underneath its surface. It's thrilling and heart-warming,at times I almost forgot the characters were puppets.Time has not diminished its magic. Surf's Up - PG Stunning animation(the water effects, the waves, wow!),an interesting story(not new and predictable but told in an original & unusual way-a mockumentary about the life of a wannabe surfer penguin),a bit stereotypical but still amusing characters, good voice acting. However,it didn't make me roll on the floor laughing as I was expecting,it wasn't boring but it wasn't very fun either, mildly funny...
