| Io non ho paura (I'm Not Scared) - R |
I discovered this after discussing with someone who found it accidentally on one day...then flipping through onto TLN..what should I find but this. The story itself is quite intriguing...and rather endearing. While playing outside one day with his friends, Michele loses his sister's glasses...and when going back to find them...he discovers something quite extraordinary. A shief of metal covers the ground, and when lifted up reveals a hole that conveys a body of a young boy hidden by blankets. Putting his fears in the backseat, he goes home to discover his father home and can't stop thinking about his astonishing discovery. Getting in trouble for running away for hours on end and making his parents worry Michele edges on towards the hole in the ground. Time and time again, he discovers the body of the young boy is not dead...but very much alive. He helps him by handing down fresh water, and spending 500 lira on some bread. After time, he becomes friends with this young boy and when getting home one time realizes that things aren't exactly as they seem. This becomes apparent, when his father's friend Sergio comes to visit...and his curiousity gets the better of him, when he hears things he shouldn't. His fears are confirmed when he learns that the local badboy in town Felice is sniffing around the hole as well. When his best friend, Salvatore, shows him a collection of toy cars his uncle sends him Michele asks him if he can have the one van Salvatore isn't fond of. After much deliberation, he tells the secret in exchange for the car. Thinking he could trust Salvatore with such a secret, Michele goes back to see the little boy and eventually carries him out of the hole to spend a day in the sun. Yet, once placing him back in the ground Michele gets caught by Felice. And Felice gets mad at him, throwing him to the ground and eventually leading him to his car where Salvatore sits. In exchange for that information, it seems Felice allows Salvatore to drive his car. When they get back, Michele gets his whole family in trouble. His mother tries to proteact him but ends up getting beat on by Felice...and when Michele tries to tear the man off his mother his father and Sergio come in to set things straight. The adults are not happy with his discovery, and send him to get sleep...telling him to forget the whole thing ..but he can't. As Michele can't stop thinking about Filipo, why's he's in that hole and why he can't come out of there. Again, his bond with the young boy gets him into trouble again and again once he tries to figure out what is the right thing to do in such a situation. This was a lovely interesting story about a young boy who learns what right and wrong is and what he chooses to do in such a situation. The acting was incredible, and I didn't mind the fact that it was subtitled at all. The music really set the theme for each scene as well, adding drama and a sense of intrigue at various times. |

| December Boys - PG-13 |
Okay, I know what you're thinking 'What the hell is Harry Potter doing in the outback??" But seriously, you guys should give this a chance...I know not everyone would prefer such a film...but I really really really liked it. Yip, JBitBop...another aussie film that gets a shining gold start from moi. ;] Some background, perhaps? This is the story of Maps, Spit, Spark and Misty...four orphans who all happen to have been born in December. Because of this very fact is the basis of their friendship, all of them living in a catholic convent in the outback in about the 60s. They watch as other little boys get happily adopted into families, and silent seethe with jealousy...knowing deep within themselves that it'll never be them smiling with two new parents. Since it is their birthday, and the convent seemed to have set aside some money to take the boys on a holiday to LadyStar Cove. After a long road across the arid scenery, they finally get to the sea where they are welcomed by an older couple named Bandy and Skipper. While there, they swim, splash about, climb over the rocks and simply have a good time. When passing by towards the cove they come across a fair where the 'Fearless Forte' jumps his motorcycle through hoops of fire and death-defying stunts. Being in total awe of this, he discovers that this fearless biker lives just next door to the place they're staying. And meet the couple who are unable to have children, learning that they are looking into adopting one of the four as their own when their holiday draws to a close. Maps, being the oldest, doesn't seem to worry much about being adopted and instead sets his eyes upon a girl named Lucy. While the other three compete to show who would be the most likely candidate for adoption. Things happen that test their friendships and then the feelings of rejection seem to drive a bit of a rift between them. Eventually, these ties become stronger what with the various events that happen in the cove...where they learn what being a December Boy is really about. The scenery in this simply stunned me, it was vibrant and lively...drawing one further into this endearing story of a bamd of orphans. The acting in here was quite decent, as each Boy portrayed what their names meant behind their titles. To be honest, the story sort of reminded me of Les Choristes...so therefore anyone who enjoyed that type of story...would enjoy this as well. Good news avid bookfiends! It's a novel by Michael Noonan...which I have already added to my list as well. :] |

To be completely honest...the only thing that really drew me towards this movie is the premise that Christian Bale would be starring in it. And, when it started...it was unlike any character I've ever seen him play. The story is about Jim Davis {Bale] who used to be an Army Ranger and was recently discharged. He's looking for work, gets turned down by the one occupation that he requires in order to marry his Mexican girlfriend and bring her into America. However, he still has these recurring nightmares from his job as a Ranger...and these seem to keep him up at night at times. And, the only person who can understand him is his best friend Mike [Freddy Rodriguez]. To kill the time before he finds out about the LAPD position, they chill by getting drunk, smoking weed, seeing their buddies and just hanging out. Yet, Mike is finally thinking he may actually need to get a job as his girlfriend, Sylvia [Eva Longoria] keeps pushing him to. She finally gives him an ultimatum...and he does something really stupid just in order to hang out with his best friend. Finally, Jim finds out that the LAPD reject his application...and becomes furious and from that is just a barrel into some reactions that most people usually wouldn't have. As Mike ignores his girlfriend's pleas, the both end up cruising along the streets of South Central Los Angeles...getting involved in petty crime, theft, drugs and eventually violence...as they did when they were young. At first, I was surprised when I heard Spanish in the beginning of this movie...having no idea what it was about...and then seeing Jim go back to America and talk like some gangsta...and then again, when addressing authorties...putting on this completely different demeanour. It seemed a little slow at first, just two guys having fun...ignoring their responsibilities...and being totally reckless until there's a key point in the film that has Jim acting out in ways he can't even control and it comes down to Mike to pacify things a little bit...however your best friend can't always help you out. It's certainly different, the immense development of Jim's character is amazing to see and Rodriguez does a pretty fine job playing Mike. It's interesting to see the two of them get along and interact...see what they're going to do next. |

| Disco Pigs - Unrated |
There was just something about this story that was brought to my attention. Darren aka Pig [Murphy] and Sinead aka Runt [Cassidy] are two of a kind, born on the same day in the same hospital...just several minutes apart. Since birth they become friends, first by reaching their tiny baby hands through the cradle bars to comfort each other and then 16 years old they do the same. They almost seem to know what they other is thinking, just because of that very reason and because of this are nearly almost always together...in some way. Completely disregarding what society says, they rebel in various mischievous sometimes even malicious ways. 'Pig and Runt - against the world.' Their idealistic world seems to shift when 17 days before their 17th birthday when Pig develops feelings for his other half and becomes jealous of anyone invading their private little world. Their parents agree that their relationship is unhealthy and learn that although Pig can't be helped, Runt has a chance to be 'fixed'. They cart her off to some kind of special school while Pig slowly travels further into himself and their world not knowing what to do with the loss of her. Finally, his mother informs him of where to find her and he sets off desperately in need of finding her for their 17th birthday to find that palace where they can be King and Queen. As he travels various roads to reach her, he becomes steadily more violent spreading his anxiousness through destruction and pain wherever he goes. Then, when he finds her and they run off together to celebrate their birthday...Pig has a plan and Runt follows if not with a bit if apprehension. The events of their joint-birthday steadily grow more and more out of hand and that connection begins to waiver. Cillian Murphy once again puts on a brilliant performance as Pig who grows wild with each passing moment without his Runt. Elaine Cassidy also puts on a rather convincing performance of his other half. Seeing that the film is centred on solely these two...they definitely capture your attention with the strang ways they spend their time together and the things which they do for fun and enjoyment. It seems to be this dark, almost morbid version of a childhood that progresses slowly into adult-hood in a twist of emotions and events that show us what kind of people these two are. |

| 28 Days Later - R |
..should probably try watching this not at 3 am..in drunken stupour... ******* Being that finally I've gotten around to watching this in its entirety...I've come to realize that Cillian Murphy is quite a wonderful actor and that I'm glad I saw this. I bet the lot of you have ALREADY seen it, so my review will probably be a regurgitation of yours...but here we go. A virus that infects people through the blood gets lose by accident when some do-gooder animal rights activists try to do the right thing...however what happens is a massive outbreak that quickly becomes an epidemic. The virus is contained in a research facility as they try and find a cure for it, until one activist doesn't believe the scientist and releases the infected animal anyways...then it spreads in a small amount of time affecting millions. 28 days later, a man named Jim awakens in an abandoned hospital completely confused with what's going on. Finding some scrubs and some abandoned candy and pop he sets out into London looking for any signs of life. Desperately, he calls out still trying to grasp the severity of the situation until he comes across a wall dedicated to missing people and eventually a newspaper proclaiming immediate evacuation. Incidentally he comes across some infected and a small group of survivors who save him and explain to him that what his conclusions are...are right. Still confused and in total disbelief he decides to set out and find his parents [in tow of Selena and Mark] who are desensitized to this whole mess and are just depending on themselves for survival. Once the trio find Jim's house, he discovers his parents have done themselves in to save themselves and they take cover in his old house. Struck with sorrow, in the middle of the night he lights a candle and seems to be reminscing with photos on the fridge's door. The candle, might have triggered it...but soon enough they're joined by quite a few uninvited guests...which becomes a battle for survival...and that's when things really get interesting. Eventually they find other survivors and decide to follow a recorded broadcast that boasts of soldiers who will have 'an answer for the infection'. Knowing that there is nowhere else to go they set off with various obstacles in the way...however other things occur that changes their plans drastically. Especially, when they find out that the haven is a corrupt and greedy band of soldiers who are only interested in one thing...the entire story is about survival. Not just against the infected...but against other humans, in general. Danny Boyle puts a different take on zombie movies, modern-izing them almost. Making this 'rage' virus the cause for people becoming 'undead' and feeding on the lively for survival. The camera pans were just incredible and added to the dramatic effects of this movie. I found that the music was also wonderful in here to add to the emphasis of the scenes...as they go through a variety of atmospheres. This one was definitely entertaining, if not chilling...but it does make one think about such things...would you really be able to only depend on yourself when your survival was at stake? |

| First Snow - R |
This was a movie...that you either like or don't..as with any other, however it also might appeal to those who delve a little deeper into the subject at hand. I almost skipped rie over this flick, but somehow I'm glad that I didn't at all. First of all, with having a fine of William Fichnter and Guy Pearce it already caught my attention...but this is a little bit about what you might come to expect. This is a story about Jimmy Starks, some smooth-talking saleman who is convinced he's gonna make it big soon. His car comes to stall in the middle of some little desert town, he doesn't seem all that fazed. To kill time while the local mechanic fixes the car he goes into the bar and grabs some food and a drink...the whole time trying to convince the bar-tender to buy some kind of jukebox. Losing interest in the place, he wanders a bit aways from various venders when he comes to a small trailer where a man, J.K. Simmons, has a sign stating 'fortunes told'. Jimmy, slightly interested about what would happen naturally goes in fro a reading. What happens next is something very strange after telling him that betting on the winning basketball team isn't in his favour and that he'll make it big from Dallas, Texas...the foretune teller all of a sudden has a spasm. And then sends the salesman on his way, naturally trying to figure out what it was he hands him more money...but the teller will have nothing more to say. He finally gets home and everything seems to be going quite normal and in his favour...until some strange things occur. Coincidences, even! Finally, curious after something a little worry-some occurs he heads back and learns that the teller sees 'no more roads, no more'. Agitated to be hearing this, he presses the man to tell him when and for how long? The teller finally assures him that he won't make it till the first snow. As he gets back home, the feeling eats at him as simultaneously those 'dead calls' from telemarketers turn out to be something a little more foreboding...and when he gets a nice little package in the mail...Jimmy slowly travels into a downward spiral. He becomes increasingly more paranoid, separating himself from his friends, work and even his girlfriend. He's shackled wondering if his past is coming back to haunt him and for good reason too. Then, as the weather progressively gets colder and colder Jimmy becomes more and more worried...and takes measures into his own hands to ensure the first snow won't have anything to do with 'no more roads to travel'. For the most part, I found this movie alright...and being that I absolutely adore Guy Pearce's acting...it wasn't hard to keep watching. There was just something about this film that really caught me off guard. One of those movies that slide under the radar..and take a long time to unravel the plot at hand. Once again, subjective...but it might make you wonder yourself...not about fortune tellers or first snows...but about 'fate' and what it has to do with humanity, itself. |

| Iron Man - PG-13 |
Now, I'm just going to save that rie off the bat I honestly thought that this is one of the best modern-day comicbook superhero movies made recently. Although, forgive my ignorance and total lack of knowledge of this Iron Man character...I just mean in the sense of portraying a comic book character. I shan't make comparisons...for I'll let you lot come to your own conclusions. Now, I suppose it's hard for someone who doesn't like Robert Downey, Jr to enjot this movie...and it's interesting because this is the normal kind of movie he'd pick to do. However, I was quite impressed with his job as the Iron Man. He had that sarcastic, witty...almost snarky attittude to match with the badass persona that made him just the star of such a film. What's it about? Let's see, Tony Stark is this billionaire super genius who invents things that are quite useful to the military aspect of the States. Due to his complete genius, a trip to Afghanistan to give a speech of weaponry goes horribly awry. Instead of being transported safely by a number of soldiers, our protagonist is kidnapped by terrorists! And the thing is, that these very terrorists are using his own inventions for doing evil. As he is unwell after an explosion, another captive of the terrorists devises a devide to prevent shrapnel from entering his heart. Functioning already as part of a machine, the terrorists keep him captive and expect him to make missiles for them. Unwillingly, he 'agree's and instead invents something useful for his escape. Once, safely back to the western world Tony re-evaluates his company and decides that perhaps he's not doing the right thing anymore. Of course, society and his company heavily disagree with this and advise the public that's it simply Post Traumatic Stress and that they want him to lay low. Well, Tony Stark...lays low indeed...but instead of keeping to himself doing nothing and keeping out of trouble he devises one of the most impressive inventions of all. A benefit for keeping people safe in the form of a well-armoured suit that contains various details for 'justice'. Once building such a suit, Tony then unlocks a scheme that part of his company was trying to keep him out of and puts himself in danger in order to try and save the world as this Iron Man character he created donning the suit. When this came out I wasn't really all that interested in another superhero movie, but since it was a holiday and we'd seen all the others we finally decided on this one...and boy were we happy with that decision! I don't think there was even a tiny dull part in this entire movie, as we see Tony going from genius-turned-apathetic billionaire into gaining a 'heart' and becoming responsible. It was interesting to see how they worked in his struggle with alcohol in here as well, alluding to it and letting the audience come to their own conclusions. It shows a drastic change, but the difference is that he doesn't 'gain' powers...he creates their existence. The special effects were really exciting in here, with all the explosions happening in various environments and so forth really kept you on your toes. The acting was pretty decent as well, as I'm being biased and saying right off the bat that I like how Mr Downey acts..well, asides from there we see none other than Jeff Bridges as one of the bad guys! And boy, is he ever convicing. Totally heartless, sporting a bald head and a heavy beard...proving Obidaih really means business. Gwyneth Paltrow and Terrance Howard were also seemingly cast exactly for the type of characters they played. Altogether this was a great choice to be a hit for the 'summer'. It was entertaining, sometimes even able to get some laughs in there to make the mood much lighter for the audience...if one forgot and saw too much propaganda in this. Now, I'm curious how the books compare to this. |

| The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian - PG |
As with the first Narnia movie I made it my goal to read it prior to the movie and then go in neutral. As I've been trying to do, however with this one I only read a bit into it before going to see the movie...so it was as much of a surprise for me as it was for any of those not well-rehearsed on the Chronicles. So, in this chapter the royal four return to their land and find it -literally- in ruins. As they've been gone a long time - just a millenium or so in Narnia years. While they were away the land that once grew and fluorished became pretty much extinct. The only ones about were the Telmarines who conquered the land and lo and behold! A tyranical king named Miraz. However, Miraz seizes the throne by well trickery and betrayal...so of course the protoganist of this story has to run away and then revive the golden age that Narnia has lost. The old Kings and Queens of Narnia end up meeting the new character - Prince Caspian as if by destiny and with his help they fight against the Telmarines for freedom for all. I thought the acting was better in this one, as the kids have grown older and seemed to have matured some. Prince Caspian as a newcomer seemed to fall into his role quite gracefully and only complimented the cast. Seeing as the scenery is the same as where Lord of the Rings took place it was hard to not compare the two. The battle scenes were quite interesting and exciting, paced evenly enough to keep one's attention throughout the long duration of the film. Not terribly certain - as I have to re-read the book - as to whether it happened like this as C.S. wrote it...or because nowadays it's hard to not be similar to the cinematography in Lord of the Rings. With some battle scenes, they were even reminscent of Gladiator and Troy. Although the scenes were similar to previous films with such scenes...it seemed to work quite well here tying into the story. Maybe we read much into it, but it was quite enjoyable to watch the story unfold. The dialogue was witty and even quite funny at parts...such as when the animals tend to share their battle tactics. And, there seemed to be a hell of a lot more violence in this one or suspenseful scenes...which isn't a bad thing as it kind of paces the characters into situations as they grow older...which definitely holds your attention quite well! I could not help but notice the ties to what Aslan is supposed to be relative to...because the tone was all about believing without seeing kind of deal. When put aside, it was less bothersome...yet perhaps others will enjoy that aspect of the movie. All in all, I liked it muchly. As the first was quite faithful to the book...I'm going to go ahead and hope, yes HOPE that this one was too. |
