| S. Darko (S Darko: A Donnie Darko Tale) - R |
It's no Donnie Darko...but it's really not a bad addition to the story at all in my opinion. You either love it or hate it, exactly how it was with the first. It's not really a sequel, it's just a so what happens next kind of story. It definitely had the feel and essence of the first one, granted the acting wasn't always top notch...but these characters were built quite well...not enough Iraq Jack, but we'll get to that later. Review...TBC. |

Heck yes again, 'most perfect slasher film ever made'? We shall seee. **** The Spiel: Okay, to be honest I've been searching for this flick for a while now and all I've found is the original - language barrier, oh noes! Or, the original with subtitles...that just happen to be english. So, in my fruitless search I finally find a copy that I just may understand...dubbed - qu'elle horreur! Regardless, seeing as this was my first look of the film...the story itself was enough to keep me enticed and forget about the terrible voice overs. I will definitely have to watch this again with subs, it would probably make it better perhaps? The Who/What/When/et al: Funny that flix just doesn't seem to have a synopsis for this flick, let's fix this shall we? So, the story starts off how you would expect a normal Norwegian horror flick to begin. We learn of waaay back in the day, a family who owned a hotel in the mountains lost their child and no one knows what's happened to him. There are various segments of news being reported of people going missing in the mountains, and statistics on how many Norwegians tend to vaca it up skiing/snowboarding for the Easter weekend. Then we meet a troup of young people respectively named; Ingunn, Mikal, Eirik, Jannicke and Marten Tobias. They're not heading for where everyone else is because Eirik has this HUGE mountain they just HAVE to see. So, once they reach this place they use their snowshoes and have a great time riding the slope -which is pretty gargantuan and which reveals a gorgeous view. All of a sudden, Marten does something and lands on his face. The group, fairly concerned go to see why he's screaming. Jannicke lifts his snowpants and we see a pretty bad break. Damn! What will our poor characters do now? They debate on going back to the car or skiing to the village nearby but realize that this will not get them back in time for nightfall...they're at a loss until Jannicke notices some buildings not too far down the mountain. The trek down the slop and find themselves facing a pretty intimidating and creepy old hotel that seems to be abandoned. The lock is stuck, so Eirik reaches the upper floor and breaks a window. They all pile inside, and it looks like no one has touched the place in ages. After they all settle down, and Marten is resting comfortably with some painkillers and alcohol Jannicke tries to put the break into place and they splint him up. She stays with him, while the other three go to explore the rest of the spooky old hotel. After finding the generator and kicking it into gear, Eirik restores power to the place and they hear this cheesy - but kinda likeable 70s norweigan music blasting through the speakers. After some exploring, Jannicke finds a guest registry dating back from the seventies and learn of the couple who owned the hotel had lost their son and no entries have been made since. They all begin to settle down for the night, and Mikal and Ingunn who are 'really into each other' go to find a room. Something happens between them, Ingunn doesn't want to go through with it so Mikal storms off leaving Ingunn by herself in the room. Nobody seems to notice anything, although poor Ingunn meets a very interesting individual who determines her fate. The next morning, they decide Eirik will go to the village and flag down a taxi while meanwhile the gang worries about Ingunn and then some grisly discoveries are made...when they realize that they're not the only ones who happen to inhabiting the old hotel. Ending Thoughts & Junk: I found this to be your run-of-the-mill slasher flick, though it didn't really seem to be one at first..the suspense was built up quite nicely as all the terrible things were befalling the friends in secret...until they found out what was really going on. Sure, it boasts the clichee 'dead teenager scenario' except I found that the characters in her were actually -quite- likeable and you could see how hard they were trying to survive in such severe conditions. They also didn't take the normal precautions that characters would in such scenarios and seemed to be quite level-headed and intelligent about the reality of the situation in what they were in. It wasn't really about the killer in here, it seemed to be about the victims and how they would use whatever meagre sources they could in order to best themselves against well - this faceless, masked killer who seemed to operate more like a robot than anything else. There were some pretty great 'fake outs' in here, I actually found myself jumping at how idiotic it was. They were definitely making fun of their surroundings in a pretty comedic manner. The atmosphere of the whole time they were in the spooky hotel was just so creepy, it was dark and really gritty at times that made it so much more enjoyable. So, it may not be a 'perfect slasher film' but it's a definitely brilliant attempt from the Norsk. I'd recommend it to any horror buff that likes those chilling flicks that get under your skin...but then disperse after a while. There isn't too much gore, which is strange that the killer happens to yield a pick-axe but you forget that as you see these five running through uncomfortably narrow corridors and all the other lovely scenery to keep you enticed. You definitely should be totally open-minded and understand exactly what they were trying to do here to watch this movie. ![]() One the films most genuine and intriguing heroine that you'll definitely want to root for. |

| The Strangers - R | I was wondering as to how creepy it would be, but essentially it just bored the crap out of me. And the beginning was waaaay too slow to hold my attention, but I figured...come on it's gotta get better...and when the first little rapping came to the door and that random chick ws standing out there all stalker-like...I held on. It really had some potential, but it was waaaay too predictable for me, and it didn't even contain any campiness enough to make it at least fun. Oh well, perhaps you lot will like it. But, I'm definitely not going to make this a recc in any means. :P | May 16, 2009 | N/A | |||

| Blood Angels (Thralls) - R |
It's on the telly, might see what it's like... Well, I managed to see it...enough to vomit a little bit and walk away happily from such garbage. Firstly, see what it does...it refers to the Necrocomicon...and deceives us to think it's another of the Evil Dead trilogy...but alas. Instead, it starts with some jackoff [who was on Breaker High as a cruise director] dressed in a nineties-era white suit. This gentleman brings a paper bag dripping with blood into a white room with four or five chicks that seemed to be chained. Instantly, he looks for some bitch named 'Roxy' and then is killed. *yawn* Later, I clicked it on again to see if it gets any better...instead we have stereotypical teens waiting outside a club with a ghetto talking dude who sounds like he wasn't paid enough money to be in this movie. I don't think it's a parody...it's just utter shite. Please, do not waste your time...I didn't. |

| Global Metal - Unrated |
After watching Metal: A Headbanger's Journey I was quite impressed...knowing that metal was developed from various things...and thusly I had to check out this one 'cause as Dunn explains he had a lot of emails post Metal and realized that the outreaches of such a genre...is pretty far. Especially, with how the various countries needed it for their own liberation, expression and relief of oppression. I had no idea that it went that far. This was a very informative and interesting documentary. Dunn and McFayden do it again! Anthropology rocks. Lol. Review, TBC. |

| The Doors - R |
Wow, where do I begin...it was truly an incredible trip. Definitely contained the similarities of riding a roller coaster..but with a drop that was lethal. The Spiel: Seeing as I had a pretty chaotic day and was looking for a movie I could watch and have a smoke with...this seemed to be the ideal choice. There was just something about how it all came together, not to mention how fucking awesome the trip in the desert was... I'm not actually very familiar with Oliver Stone seeing as this probably one of the few movies I've seen of his, yes I know...terrible but I'm getting there. I really, really liked this...I don't know in a way it seemed to explain The Doors in a revering and almost respectful sort of way? The Who/What/When/et al: The story is, as you may already deduce is that of the legendary and influential band of the '60s..and how the world revolved around Jim, or vice versa. At the same time, it seems to be a biography of the beloved Lizard King and it shows his life...from beginning to tragic end. In a way, we see a small bit of how Jim became who he was and from being a film student in Los Angeles to somewhat stumbling into the life of a rockstar. This film displays him as an iconic creature of the '60s...but he has flaws and thusly it reminds us of his mortality, and more importantly of our own. Yet, besides being this extraordinary icon of that era...it also shows his downfalls of alcoholism and the growing fascination with a variety of drugs and eventually his obsession with death. This facet of life actually follows Jim around ever since the acid trip in the desert where he meets this mysterious shaman. He comes and goes, and it definitely shows us just how fascinated Jim really is with such a subject. After the Death Valley trip, the band members return to LA where they develop a devoted fanbase that follows them everywhere they go. Although, Machiavelli visits our Lizard King as he becomes self-infatuated and the drawbacks of extreme fame set in. As this trip continues...the band has to deal with their lead singer's absence and showing up for shows/recording when he likes as he falls deeper inside this downward spiral...thusly, deeply affecting the band and everyone else who relies on him in their lives. It is finally over all these disappointments and separation from reality that our hero finally meets the shaman, one last time. Ending Thoughts & Junk: I was completely and utterly blown away by Kilmer's phenomenal representation of Morrison...and he really was able to embody the essence of the Lizard King. It was amazing, because at times..you'd have to remember that that's who it was on the screen...and not really Morrison. I mean I really love Kilmer as an actor...but he really put on just an amazing performace...not to mention that he can sing. WOW. Although I'm not a fan of Meg Ryan...I guess she was kinda agreeable as for the role of Pam Courson. There is of course a menagerie of cameos and other such actors in here...too many to mention...but they all play pretty crucial roles in the movie as well. Although there is much controversy/animostiy about the end result of Stone's depiction...as a movie whether fact or fiction...was quite a feat within itself. Quotastic: "Close your eyes. We'll see the snake; see the serpent appear. His head is ten feet long and five feet wide. He has one red eye and one green eye. He's seven miles long. Deadly. I see all the history of the world on his scales, all people, all actions. We're all just little pictures on his scales. God, he's big, he's moving, devouring consciousness, digesting power. Monster of energy. It's a monster. We're going to kiss the snake on the tongue. Kiss the serpent. But if it senses fear, it'll eat us instantly. But if we kiss it without fear, it'll take us through the garden, through the gate, to the other side. Ride the snake... until the end of time." As if one movie isn't enough...check out this interesting doc of The Doors, called When You're Strange which premiered at the Sundance Festival earlier this year. I'm definitely gonna look for it...when it comes out! :] |
