About Me

My name is Mike and I'm from the Winter Wonderland known as Sweden. I'm a down-to-earth, open-minded and easy-going guy who loves to have fun and just enjoy life in any way I can. I'm also a huge movie-buff and love everything that concerns films and film-making, which is why I'd call Flixter my second home. Besides movies I'm also into writing and drawing, as I'm an artistic person and have been for as long as I can remember. Writing, however, is my one true passion and I aim to work as a screenwriter or novelist someday in the future. But whatever unfolds, I'm sure my love for the movie world will always remain constant and strong :-)

Say Anything... Say Anything... PG-13 3.5 Stars
A well-written, yet pretty typical 80's dramedy, starring a very young and spirited John Cusack. Altough there wasn't really much of a plot, I still found myself thoroughly enjoying it, thanks to the wonderful authenticity in the acting and dialogue, which has always been the signature for any work by director and writer Cameron Crowe. It may not be as brilliant as some of his other films, like Almost Famous and Fast Times at Ridgemont High, but it's still a solid and watchworthy movie, that reminded me once again of why I love the 80's so much. Because altough they didn't have things like Youtube, cell phones or TiVo back then, it surely made up for it with the consistently high quality of its music and films. Of course, I was only five when this movie came out...but the fact remains the same ;-)
El Orfanato (The Orphanage) El Orfanato (The Orphanage) R 4.0 Stars
Due to the fact that I'm pretty jaded nowadays, horror flicks (and particularily newer ones) seldom have any big or lasting effect on me. This movie, however, was a definite exception. Because not only was it well-acted, beautifully scored and skillfully directed, but it actually managed to scare the living daylight out of me. Not once, but several times. Having said that, I'm both happy and regretful that I saw it. Happy because it was so much better than I had expected, yet regretful because I'm now gonna have trouble sleeping for the next few nights. Then again, I suppose that just means that the movie served its purpose. It also taught me that Spanish film-making is not to be underestimated, nor looked upon with the slightest ounce of prejudice. Because where its Hollywood counterparts have a tendency to fail, this one certainly suceeded with its brilliant combination of psychological horror, engaging melodrama, a believable plot and last but not least, a great ending that actually makes a lot of sense. In other words, a must-see!
Step Brothers Step Brothers R 3.0 Stars
Silly, random and childish, yet pretty funny overall. As compared to other Will Ferell flicks, it's definitely somewhat better than Talladega Nights and Anchorman, while being in league with movies like Blades of Glory and Old School. In other words, a pretty average comedy, that neither lets you down, nor serves to "wow" you. Not a bad choice though, if you're in the mood to leave your brain at the door for a while, and let loose your inner child :-)
A Christmas Story A Christmas Story PG 3.0 Stars
Maybe it's a bad idea to watch this type of movie before the winter season has even begun, but I just couldn't help myself, as I had been wanting to see this for quite some time. Now that I have, I was neither disappointed nor very enchanted by it. It may not be as good as other movies of its sub-genre, like Christmas Vacation or the first two Home Alone flicks, but it's definitely a decent family movie, that is harmless enough to be viewed by anyone. It could have done without the slightly annoying voice-over though, because I think it ruined more than it helped the story.
Tropic Thunder Tropic Thunder R 3.5 Stars
This movie left me with very mixed impressions. On one hand, the first half was pretty much your average Ben Stiller comedy, as in mediocre and annoyingly uneven. But on the other hand, the second half (as well as the film's hilarious intro) was so fun and action-packed, that it completely compensated for all the previous misses. Granted that the jokes ranged from everything between hilarious to downright lame, but overall, I still found myself laughing out loud more often than I thought I would, and so did my buddy that I saw it with.

Another thing I loved was the wonderful cast, because Stiller surely rounded up a lot of A-list names for this one, all of whom got their fair share of screen time to shine. And thank god for that, because for a while there I feared he would go greedy and take up most of the space, which wasn't the case at all here. At any rate, when it comes down to it, this ended up being my favourite comedy of the year so far, despite its mediocre first half.

Oh, and one last thing...see if you can spot Tom Cruise, because he does a role here that is pretty much as far away as you can get from his usual repertoire. So far in fact, that he's now earned back my respect for him as an actor. You'll know what I mean when you see it ;-)
Batman Gotham Knight Batman Gotham Knight Unrated 3.5 Stars
As if The Dark Knight wasn't enough to put me in a Batman craze, along came this film as the icing on the cake. For those who are familiar to or have seen The Animatrix, I can inform that this one is built on the same exact concept, meaning it's not a full-length movie per definition, but a series of short animated films made by various artists and directors. Most of them were good both story- and animation-wise, while others (altough thankfully in a minority here) didn't really interest me at all. In that sense, this is in many ways a mixed bag, altough one that, as a whole, can only be described as very cool and visually impressive.

The Lord of the Rings - The Return of the King 1. The Lord of the Rings - The Return of the King PG-13 5.0 Stars
My favourite movie of all time (so far in my life that is). Even if it isn't perfect, I still feel it's a 4.9 out of 5. I'm a real sucker for the Lord of the Rings and fantasy in general, but this one is very special to me. Kudos to Peter Jackson for making such a great adaptation to screen. It really deserves its 12 oscars. Love every second of it, from start to finish. One of the few full pointers I've ever given a movie, which is saying a lot.
Braveheart 2. Braveheart R 5.0 Stars
Epic movies don't get much better than this. Mel Gibson may be a nut to some, but he sure knows how to make quality that counts :-)
Gladiator 3. Gladiator R 5.0 Stars
One of the best movies ever made in my opinion, second only to Braveheart and The Return of The King. It's got everything you could want in a movie like this: great music, wonderful acting, superb directing, action and story. If you haven't seen it yet you have certainly missed something :-)
Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back 4. Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back PG 5.0 Stars
Definitely the best one in the old trilogy, even though A New Hope and Return of the Jedi follows very close behind.
