All I need is a sheet of paper
and something to write with, and then I can turn the world upside down. - Nietzche Got a movie you think is THE SHIT? Recommend it! **Regarding my movie recommendations: As I am hesitant to start with even recommending anything to anyone on account of my being bias or you lot not wanting to read longass stories about how awesome/not I thought something was...then I generally send it to the whole lot of you. Either disregard it or use it as an excuse to drop a line. Whatever, it's up to you! I usually like replying and seeing what others think and then discussing it, further. Ja, I ramble a lot. So be it. :] =D |

It was actually QUITE funny, ludicrous at times...it just made you question what [the FUCK] was going on...and laugh regardless..

DeNiro and Pacino haven't been in a movie together since Michael Mann's Heat....who wouldn't be intrigued?!

I'm not exactly certain, but is it just me or is there just an increase of these types of movies? Could you think these directors are making a statement upon society today? It seems the more corrupt our world becomes, or the more we recognize what is happening to it...do we get these stories of people taking justice into their own hands. It's an interesting scenario though, because it also brings us back to our philosophy lectures on ethics...where do we draw the line? This film is a fine example of this question being addressed...or insinuated at the very least.
Well, let' s see...this is the story of Erica Bain who when walking their dog one night with her fiancee have a bit of a run in with some thugs. This run in costs her fiancee's life, and 3 weeks of hers as well. She is just a voice on the radio, and always had lived and breathed the city...even loved it. And has used a bit of time on the radio to show everyone exactly the beauty that hides within the streets. Yet, after this very incident she finds the ugliness that is masqueraded by the beauty.
As she tries to mind her own business, for some reason Erica is a magnet for all kinds of criminals. Unable to sleep, or rest because of the abruptness of this attack on her life...she haunts the streets at night recording ideas to share with her audience...yet every night prowl turns out to be a run in with some kind of trouble or conflict.
Slowly slipping from the person she once was, into someone else she purchases an illegal gun and ends up having to take matters into her hands more times than she can count. Eventually, her exploits are noticed by the media and the rest of the city as they voice their opinions on the work of some unknown 'vigilante'. Meanwhile, the police are looking for the cause of such effects and one detective actually interacts with her and becomes somebody she can talk to.
When things start to weigh heavily upon her conscience and things looks like they are moving forward in her case, she must face a decision...to go through with it and avenge her fiance or do the 'right' thing and walk away.
The movie shows how apathetic it seems that police departments are to the victims of cases such as this, when she asks to speak to the detectives assigned to her case..she's told 'I know how hard this is for you, but if you sit down there an officer will come and help you with your case.' In turn, this fuels Erica's need to take control of what she lost control of 3 weeks or so ago.
I think that Jodie Foster does a phenomenal job in here, becoming that hard and stoic character that which she wasn't before getting attacked in the city she loves. Terrence Howard is a good addition as the detective who seems to find her intriguing and wants to genuinely help her.
I -might- be a bit biased however, as there is a lot of prose on here when she's on the air. And, if you ask me it's freakin' brilliant poetry and that might be the only case you might want to watch this film...but sit down because you'll find yourself glued to it. At least, I was.
Recommend to anyone who's ever thought about the thin line between right and wrong.

Party Monster

Seth Green and Macauly Culkin do so well in here! With Marilyn Manson and Dylan McDermott, Natasha Lyon and Chloe Sevingny as well, interesting to see this plot be played out on the silver screen after happening in real life. The life of Michael Alig and the New York Club Kids is certainly not boring.

I fucken love this movie. Brad Pitt, Edward Norton, Helena Bonham Carter, Jared Leto, Meat Loaf...such an amazing cast to bring Chuck Palahniuk's world to life. Very well done.

American History X

I finally watched this film and I swear that it hit me square in the solar plexus. It was such a powerful, gripping story that deals with a subject that has been addressed countless times...except this one shows that hate can be decreased, or maybe even obliterated, or replaced with something else. It amazing to see conscience sneak up upon such a character, and although it's a hard road...he basically learns that maybe it's not the way one should be thinking in the first place. The two siblings do a fantastic job learning from each other and whatever it is that they and their family face in result of the incidents that occur. Wow, I'm actually still shaken up over how potent the effect of this film was. The cinematography in here was also used to an advantage, drawing certains scenes into perspective by playing with the colour schemes of the screens. The music also added effect with the various pictures portrayed throughout the film; memories for one. I would recommend this to anyone, and perhaps if you're interested The Believer may also be a good film to check out. Definitely one of my faves.

August Rush
PG
This was a really magical film that takes music and literally personifies it and gives it a very optimistic way of looking at it when things in life aren't as they exactly plan them to be. A story about a little boy, who in unfortunate circumstances finds himself in a boarding house. And always has this inner hope that wherever his parents are, he'll find them. It shows us that if you really want something, you can make it happen. It's an interesting turn of events that the little boy eventually ventures into New York City and is misled by 'Wizard' who takes him in, but with a price. At the same time, his mother learns about his existence and desperately goes looking for him where she runs into the social worker who's in charge of Evan [August's] case. A really magical film that is quite endearing, I'd recommend it to anyone who has a fondness for music.

Coffee and Cigarettes
by SerdarJim Jarmush puts his favoritte actors in front of the camera, with a table and some coffee and cigarettes (tea on occasions) and shoots short movies where actors mostly improvised. Now, there is nothing wrong with that!
You get Roberto Benigni blathering away like he did in Down by Law. Tom Waits explaining Iggy Pop why he was late. Steve Coogan wanting to escape from Alfred Molina. Steve Buscemi talking to twins about the King. RZA and GZA running into Bill "fucking" Murray. And my favoritte, Cate Blanchett meeting with her cousin Cate Blanchett, yes two Caties!!
To enjoy this film, you need to like some of these actors, get excited by the cameos,
you need to like the director's style and you need to like cinema. Otherwise, you'll find it boring..Hey, you should really see this!

Come see this movie with me...I believe this would be a good movie, it would be nice to see Angelina Jolie actually acting if you know what I mean. Is a change because shes only acted out characters that involve more of the seducing-violent-active kind of role and not a full on acting role. I haven't seen her really acting since her movie Gia, I believe this kind of looks like it because it involves a mental institution. Don't get me wrong when I say she does not act because she is a very good actress, I am just saying she should be given roles in which that is precisely what she is showing off, not her flexibility and athleticism.

Rock The Boat
by BrianInspiring documentary that shows that an HIV diagnosis doesn;t mean you have to take to bed and wait to die.
Being that I've worked in the past with HIV and AIDS-effected kids, and I've seen the effects of the disease up close and personal, it was nice to see a documentary that deals with disease in an uplifting way.
Most people would probably like this, if you can catch it on LOGO.Hey, you should really see this!
