Ninja Assassin (2009,  R)
Ninja Assassin
This flick was a typical martial arts film with an easy-to-follow story, a few key characters, and lots of fighting.

What I liked: Produced by the Wachowski Brothers (The Matrix) and written in part by J. Michael Straczynski (Babylon 5). The weapons display and fight choreography were excellent. I was thrilled to see Sho Kosugi on the big screen again. He still rocks, after all these years.

What I didn't like: There's a sequence where Raizo is being chased by the ninja clan out into a busy Berlin rotary with lots of traffic. We've been learning that ninjas don't like being seen, so what the hell were they doing playing out in traffic? There's another sequence where the Ozunu training camp is attacked by the forces of good. We've already seen a few ninjas take out an entire SWAT team. But when the forces of good attack the camp and are facing a small army of ninjas, the ninjas turn and scatter like roaches and are killed easily. That didn't fit right in my mind.

Lots of blood, severed limbs, and brain matter mixed in with great fight sequences and a decent story.

Avatar (2009,  PG-13)
Avatar
I knew this film was going to be visually astounding, but WOW! I was lucky enough to see it in IMAX 3D. Go spend the extra cash and see it in IMAX! I was also worried about the storyline because of it being a too-familiar theme. The story worked extremely well. I thought the Na'vi were fascinating, and their bond with their environment was incredibly unique. I thought the good humans were a tad one-dimensional, but the bad humans were expectedly shallow. All in all, a fantastic production!
