9 - PG-13 Beautifully made, a kind of LittleBigPlanet: The Movie, crossed with WALL-E, The Matrix and Terminator 4. While the plot is pretty linear and a little action-heavy, it quickly pulls you in and the film doesn't overstay its welcome. A few more laughs and it would have been near-perfect. October 29, 2009

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus - PG-13 Messy, like you'd expect from a Gilliam film, but bubbling with ideas and fun performances - worth watching just to be dazzled. October 28, 2009

Zombieland - R It definitely had the 'zom' and it just about had the rom', but not quite as much 'com' as Shaun Of The Dead, unfortunately, and it was always going to be hard not to compare it to that. However, still definitely worth seeing if you like anything zombie-related and/or want to see the inside of Bill Murray's house! Great soundtrack, some nice visual effects, and one of Woody Harrelson's best performances in a while. October 12, 2009

District 9 - R Take the best things about Starship Troopers, Robocop/Alien/Ironman, Independence Day, Tsotsi, Cloverfield, The Fly, E.T. and many others, and you end up with this. It quickly pulls you in and doesn't let you go, seamlessly blending documentary style footage with cutting edge CGI, and a great mainly improvised performance from the lead (Sharlto Copley). Intelligently raising issues of immigration and race (whether the 'people' are of a different colour or of completely different DNA), multi-national corporations and media maniulation, and with great action scenes too - one of the best films of the year. (500) Days of Summer - PG-13 A true-to-life account of the rollercoaster highs and lows of love, that completely hit a nerve with me. Great acting, great music, great laughs, great realism... great film. September 17, 2009

The Break-Up - PG-13 Starts off well with a good premise and lots of fun in the middle, but peters out at the end and doesn't really amount to very much. September 17, 2009

Los Abrazos Rotos (Broken Embraces) (Broken Hugs) - R Solid stuff, though not really anything new from Almodóvar - typical kind of plot about a buried secret or two from the past, and typical mix of tone for a non-English film that's big on the 'world cinema' scene. Generally good though, and if you have a thing for Ms Cruz, you will not want to miss it... September 9, 2009

Once - R Enjoyed the music more than the plot, but I think the rawness gives it its obvious charm. Bit short though. September 6, 2009

The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 - R Slick and easy to watch 21st century version of Speed (kind of). Travolta's character wasn't really played with, though Washington as the protagonist was much more and that's what hooks you in. Typical stylism of Tony Scott, though never exactly the same as other movies he's done. Some nice nuances in the soundtrack, making the film well worth the (one-time) ride. August 19, 2009
