The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 - R Slick and easy to watch 21st century version of Speed (kind of). Travolta's character wasn't really played with, though Washington as the protagonist was much more and that's what hooks you in. Typical stylism of Tony Scott, though never exactly the same as other movies he's done. Some nice nuances in the soundtrack, making the film well worth the (one-time) ride. August 19, 2009

Factotum - R Nothing amazing but entertaining to a point. Fun and random, but alas no real point or message. August 19, 2009

Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story - R The Naked Gun of the musical biopic world? Could have been funnier, but if you're a fan of that genre then you'll enjoy this. August 15, 2009

Moon - R An impressive debut for Zowie Bowie, it achieves so much with so little (cast, sets). Intelligent and engaging, emotional and philosophical - stuff you don't get much in sci-fi these days, and so a real space oddity! August 15, 2009

Man on Wire - PG-13 Fascinating tale, but I found that way it was told was a bit muddled, leaving you dangling when you probably don't want to be. August 10, 2009

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - PG Good but not great. Had the comedy moments often missing from the earlier films, but the overall plot was weak, and typically (for the series) derivative of other classic fantasy. Acting generally good, especially the newcomers, though a lot of characters barely got any screen time. Effects were convincing, soundtrack a bit muddled. I saw it on IMAX, and the 3D at the start was mainly wasted - would have been better in other parts of the film. It's been billed as the 'darkest' HP yet, but personally I found all the dementors in the fourth film a lot more chilling than the Gollum-alikes and barely used Voldemort henchmen/women in this one. Also, the meaning of the 'half-blood' prince was not explained.

Certainly watchable and entertaining, but still no match for The Prisoner Of Azkaban.

Brüno (Bruno) - R Certainly entertaining, with plenty of memorable and generally funny scenes, and a deserved 18 certificate, though not quite as polished or with the simple genius of Borat (which you can't help but compare it to). July 20, 2009

Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging - PG-13 Occasionally OK but mainly lame. July 19, 2009

Public Enemies - R Entertaining, but despite loads of big and smaller names, all acting well, it wasn't quite the masterpiece it might have been. Shaky-cam annoyances at time, and you never really got to know the protagonist, John Dillinger, or those chasing him. July 7, 2009

Year One - PG-13 July 7, 2009

The Hangover - R July 7, 2009

Sex and the City - R Not really the best ever episode, and the problems with both Carrie and Miranda's relationships were frustrating as they only had themselves to blame by ignoring their partners. A little too clichéd in other respects - the fashion/clothes and Samantha's sexploits. Entertaining enough though I guess. June 8, 2009

Angels & Demons - PG-13 June 6, 2009

Terminator Salvation - PG-13 Didn't quite reach the darkness/deepness of T2, but certainly intriguing to finally see the future war that the other films referred to and to add a few more pieces to the puzzle. CGI virtually flawless, though most of the characters (Connor in particular) lacked depth. Action sequences predictably entertaining though. June 6, 2009

Gladiatress - Unrated Like a feature-length bad Smack The Pony sketch - nowhere near as funny as a Monty Python film. May 25, 2009

Dan in Real Life - PG-13 Decent cast manage to make this predictable falling-in-love tale watchable. May 25, 2009

X-Men Origins - Wolverine - PG-13 Plodded along fairly well, but was hard to feel anything for the characters when you already know their fate - fundamental problem with prequels. Quite a few underused actors too. Logan/Wolverine was always a bit dull in the main films compared to some of the other characters, and I wouldn't really say he had any more depth here either, despite being all about him. And the two extra scenes during the closing credits were a waste of time.

Entertaining as a popcorn flick, but lacked the depth of the other X-Men movies. Bring on the next one (Magneto apparently).

Star Trek - PG-13 Very very entertaining - kept the feel of the original TV show and movies despite being made in the 21st century. Plenty of in-jokes, thrilling CGI, a smidgeon of a love story and not one but two versions of a classic character, setting things up nicely while also creating a new timeline twist.

I barely recognised Eric Bana as the villain, and some other great smaller parts from Karl Urban (Lord Of The Rings), Winona Ryder, Simon Pegg, John Cho (Harold & Kumar), Anton Yelchin (Huff), as well as Zachary Quinto (Heroes).

My only criticism would be that all the academy stuff felt very similar to Starship Troopers, but that couldn't really be helped. J.J. Abrams can essentially do no wrong?

State of Play - PG-13 Intriguing political thriller with stellar cast, slickly edited and scored, highlighting the real-world dangerous mix of terrorism, blogging and spin, damaged ex-armymen combined with corporate collusion, though perhaps with one twist too many at the end. Very enjoyable watch. May 17, 2009
