Pirate Radio (The Boat That Rocked) - R Bit silly in patches, but good fun overall. Great soundtrack, as you'd expect, and some nice touches with the post-production. If you like some/all of the main actors, well worth watching.

Note though that Emma Thompson and Gemma Arterton are barely in the film, so shouldn't really be on the billing.

Entre les Murs (The Class) - PG-13 Interesting academic year in the life of a Year/Grade 10 suburban Parisian class. I think its biggest achievement was showing you how complicated the job of being a teacher can be, and all of the non-educational aspects of the role that you have to deal with. April 20, 2009

Duplicity - PG-13 Good fun, though the ending was a little predictable and underwhelming, which was a shame after the film threw up a few fun surprises at first. Tom Wilkinson sadly under-used, but Clive Owen is as likable on screen as always. April 15, 2009

Music and Lyrics - PG-13 Assuming you don't have a problem with the stars, a perfectly watchable romcom, that is right on the money in terms of what makes a song. April 5, 2009

A Mighty Heart - R A story worth telling, told well. Though in all honesty I won't be watching it again due to the tone. March 15, 2009

Watchmen - R Not sure the IMAX DMR presentation that I went to really added anything, but the film itself was the perfect mix of the darkness of Sin City mixed with the variety of X-Men, with some of the themes of sister novel V For Vendetta, albeit very American flavoured this time. The sci-fi elements did make me think of the Fantastic Four movies actually, except with more characters, more depth and crucially, more substance. Oh, and the sex scene in the middle certainly helped define to viewers what makes a 'graphic' novel... The film was different, innovative, took a cue from Donnie Darko with it's 80s soundtrack, and was most certainly very 'watch'able. March 12, 2009

The International - R Entertaining thriller, but, flawed in a number of ways. Watts' character (can't even remember her name) was a waste of space, the script was weak in various parts ('I want some f--king justice' and loads of ambiguous metaphors), and the ending while interesting didn't really satisfy. That said, the Googleheim shoot-out (think of a gun fight on the circular ramps of a multi-storey car park, but with a much bigger budget) was a great set-piece, Owen pulled off another leading role with ease, and the 'international' locations kept things interesting. Shame that the plot didn't stray for from Quantum Of Solace. March 10, 2009

Vicky Cristina Barcelona - PG-13 Good fun, but unfulfilling plot/ending. Woody Allen is great as always at documenting and debating love, but there was no conclusion.

I'm also not sure why Penélope was Oscar nominated/awarded for her performance in this film - there was little depth to her role and she didn't even appear until halfway through. She's done far better work (that I've seen).

Push - PG-13 Heroes: the movie, kind of. Visual style was probably the most interesting thing about it. Story was messy though still quite predictable. Acting sufficient. March 2, 2009

Gran Torino - R Entertaining and engrossing, with lots of humour. March 2, 2009

Echelon Conspiracy - PG-13 February 10, 2009

The Wrestler - R Good, but not great. A simple story that I'm sure has been told before in different guises, perhaps not with as good performances - I can see why Rourke and Tomei were nominated for awards, even if I wouldn't have made them winners myself. February 10, 2009

The Heartbreak Kid - R Silly tale that's only occasionally funny. The addition of large plastic breasts in once scene didn't help either. February 9, 2009

Valkyrie - PG-13 Another fascinating WWII tale (see Joyeux Noel, The Counterfeiters, Downfall, The Lives Of Others and many more), told using an all-star cast (some members barely on screen for more than a minute), where you quickly forget that they're speaking English instead of German as they should be. Lead Tom Cruise manages to not overdo it, and the script/direction really master the art of building up tension, despite most viewers knowing the outcome. I personally really enjoyed the soundtrack, written by the film's editor, John Ottman. If you like this kind of film, it is a must-see. February 4, 2009

Frost/Nixon - R Following in the footsteps of The Insider and Good Night And Good Luck, amongst others, a fascinating slice of history, both in the content and the performances given. Zimmer's soundtrack does what the best soundtracks should do, and before you know it you're immersed in this compelling story of real American past. Ron Howard back on form. January 26, 2009

Slumdog Millionaire - R Moving tale that reveals a side to India yet seen in mainstream cinema, that was nearly an unintentional straight-to-DVD. Cleverly written, with Celador's blessing (and money) of course, lots of great child performances, cracking photography and soundtrack. Danny Boyle delivers yet again. January 25, 2009

Seven Pounds - PG-13 Once you know what's going on, pretty simple stuff, but the way that this story unfolds slowly is what makes it interesting. Will Smith's best performance so far, with a great set of supporting actors. Moving music match a moving tale. January 19, 2009
