arvo part comes off as a very mild mannered genius yet he's somehow reminiscent of popeye and charles manson. the breakdown of fur alina was masterful.

bruno is a very distinct, memorable character. the sadness is occasionally offset with badass accordion and piano scenes. classy herzog.
Cloverfield
PG-13
aside from the nausea i was really disappointed that there was no explanation for the origin of the monster. fans of the arcade game "rampage" will probably enjoy this.
Le Samouraï (The Godson)
PG
good stuff. hard to believe that a hitman movie with such a slow pace could be this enjoyable.

the tale of a hermaphrodite.. what a challenging story. the first 30-40 mins were very reminiscent of bielinsky [rip]. most memorable scene was when alex was petting the iguana with his/her feet. excellent acting by efron and darin.
There Will Be Blood

the demise of a stand-up miner.. i'm actually not much of a lewis fan ever since gangs of new york but this movie is fully about the evolution of his character and he pulls off a brilliant performance as the scarface of oil drilling.

wow, i had no expectations watching this since i'd never heard of it but was floored by the end. the cinematography is simple and beautiful in black in white and definitely throwback style but the story and acting are what make this a 5-star for me.

an epileptic taxidermist decides to rob a bank while on a hunting trip. excellent premise to build on. really loved the sound effects that built up to the seizures.

Persepolis
by SancarBased on her own graphic novel, Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud?s film is a masterly work. A film about growing up during the fundamentalist revolution in Iran sounds like a total downer but in fact the film is anything but. Of course it has tragic and horrifying moments but manages, like Marjane herself, to see the funny side. There is Majane?s eccentric grandmother (Rowlands), who keeps her breasts firm by dipping them in ice-cold water for ten minutes every day. There are the various moving and hilarious sequences where Marjane and her friends defy the fundamentalists, playing air guitar along to Iron Maiden, and Marjane?s first encounters with the opposite sex in Vienna. Above all, there?s the way in which Iranians tried to maintain a veneer of normality ? still holding house parties, with home made wine and decadent music.

Divine Intervention (Yadon Ilaheyya)
by SancarSanta Claus tries to outrun a gang of knife-wielding youth. It's one of several vignettes of Palestinian life in Israel - in a neighborhood in Nazareth and at Al-Ram checkpoint in East Jerusalem. Most of the stories are droll, some absurd, one is mythic and fanciful; few words are spoken. A man who goes through his mail methodically each morning has a heart attack. His son visits him in hospital. The son regularly meets a woman at Al-Ram; they sit in a car, hands caressing. Once, she defies Israeli guards at the checkpoint; later, Ninja-like, she takes on soldiers at a target range. A red balloon floats free overhead. Neighbors toss garbage over walls. Life goes on until it doesn't.

Hero
by JackThe first foreign film I've watched. And it certainly won't be the last.
Plot: In feudal China, the King of Qin is waging a bloody campaign to conquer the entire land. He has been made a target of three dangerous assassins: spear-wielding Sky, and the lovers Broken Sword and Flying Snow. One day word comes that he has nothing left to fear; a prefect known only as Nameless has killed all three assassins. Nameless is called to the palace and asked to recount the tale of how he accomplished this amazing feat. After he tells his story, however, the King notices some flaws in it.
Doesn't sound like a film I would enjoy, seeing the plot. But, the way it was performed was flawless.
A true masterpiece. Even if you do have to watch like a deaf person. Most of you on my friends list have seen this, and the review sucks. But whatever.

Panj é asr (At Five in the Afternoon)
by Sancar"At five in the afternoon comes death," claims a haunting snatch of poetry in this equally haunting picture from Iranian director Samira Makhmalbaf. One of the first feature films to emerge from post-Taliban Afghanistan (making it a worthy companion piece to Siddiq Barmak's excellent Osama), this follows Noqreh (Agheleh Rezaie) as she struggles to redefine her role as a woman despite the protestations of her cranky, conservative father (Abdolgani Yousefrazi). Yet with death and misery everywhere, freedom seems an unlikely luxury.

Yumurta (Avgo)(Egg)
by SancarPoet Yusuf returns to his childhood hometown, which he hadn't visited for years, upon his mother's death. A young girl, Ayla awaits him in a crumbling house. Yusuf has been unaware of the existence of this distant relation who had been living with his mother for five years.
Ayla has something to ask of Yusuf . Yusuf is obliged to perform the sacrifice his mother Zehra had been prevented by death from fulfilling. Yusuf agrees as he finds himself unable to withstand the passive rhythm of rural life, the spaces imbued with the ghosts and personages of old lovers and friends, nor against the overriding feeling of guilt.
Yusuf and Ayla set off for the saint's tomb, some three or four hours away, for the traditional sacrifice ceremony. Unable to locate the herd amongst which the sacrificial animal was to be selected, they have to spend the night in a hotel by the crater lake. Yusuf and Ayla are drawn closer together by the atmosphere of the wedding party at the hotel.
While the falling snow blankets guilt, the place to which they are returning will no longer be that old town.Hey, you should really see this!

Romulus, My Father
by SancarROMULUS, MY FATHER is based on Raimond Gaita's critically acclaimed memoir. It tells the story of Romulus, his beautiful wife, Christina, and their struggle in the face of great adversity to bring up their son, Raimond.
It is the tale of a boy trying to balance a universe described by his deeply moral father, against the experience of heartbreaking absence and neglect from a depressive mother. It is, ultimately, a story of impossible love that celebrates the unbreakable bond between father and son.Hey, you should really see this!

Le Deuxième Souffle (The Second Wind)
by SancarThe Last One.
France | 2007 | 156 mins | dir. Alain Corneau, with Daniel Auteuil, Monica Bellucci.
27th Int. Ist. Film Festival 5-20 April 2008 with ALAIN CORNEAU.
Alain Corneau has devised a thrilling white-knuckle adaptation of the José Giovanni story that spawned the classic 1966 film by director Jean-Pierre Melville. As the iconic gangster Gustave 'Gu' Minda, Daniel Auteuil more than fills the considerable shoes of his predecessor, the legendary Lino Ventura. Monica Bellucci, meanwhile, sets the screen on fire as the glamourous and Sphinx-like Manouche the woman who will do anything for the criminal she loves.Hey, you should really see this!

Shadows in the Palace
by LupusSure, palace politics was sexier and more fun in Curse Of The Golden Flower or The Banquet but where else can you watch Koreans usin fingernail torture? Heaps better and more serious than all the mainstream South Korean shyte that flood the market. Complementary supernatural twist included.
Deserves a watch, really. A representation of better Korean cinema.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall
by ChrisJudd Apatow does it again! or should I say Peter Segel does it; because, seeing as Peter Segel, an Apatow regular who stepped up to the plate for this one, not only stars in but wrote this film, it really is his success. Forgetting Sarah Marshall comes from the Judd Apatow stable which is storming Hollywood right now, having produced a number of great comedic gems in the last few years (40 Year-Old Virgin, Knocked Up, Superbad, etc). Segel is Peter Bretter, a successful composer who begins the film by being dumped by his long-time girlfriend Sarah Marshall, a popular television actress. Peter sets off to Hawaii to forget his troubles (at the urging of his step-brother, played by the awesome Bill Hader), only to find Sarah and her new obnoxious pop-star boyfriend are vacationing at the same resort. A hilarious and surprisingly honest and heartfelt comedy ensues. Kudos to Segel for writing a totally awesome script and for also handling his first lead role exceptionally well; one is able to completely empathize and latch onto the luck-less adventures of this born loser and feel the lift when he starts to win. You've also got to give the dude tons of credit for putting his junk and everything else of his body on full display several times throughout the film - he's one brave hombre. Russel Brand, who plays Sarah's almost unbelievable new boyfriend (and who is an English comedian), is also completely awesome - I look forward to seeing him in other things because he nearly steals every scene he is in (successfully in a couple cases). Anyway, this is a really good movie and very worthy addition to the continually fantastic Apatow line-up.
Ignore the unexplainable low Flixster rating of this (consider the 84% IMDB rating and just as high Rottentomatoes.com rating as more accurate) - and get out and see this flick!
