wow, i had no expectations watching this since i'd never heard of it but was floored by the end. the cinematography is simple and beautiful in black in white and definitely throwback style but the story and acting are what make this a 5-star for me.

an epileptic taxidermist decides to rob a bank while on a hunting trip. excellent premise to build on. really loved the sound effects that built up to the seizures.

the natural landscape works perfectly with the story. the monk is played by kim ki duk when he returns to the temple for the third time. he's a damn good actor too!

Stay
(2005, R)
definitely on the avant tip here with a surprisingly mainstream cast [aside from gosling]. while the story is very nonconventional the concept has definitely been done before. the ambiguity of reality crossed with dying moments and strong deja vu elements reminded me a lot of jacob's ladder and american psycho.
the focus on visual design is what really held my interest. i thought the transitions from scene to scene were really unique and some of them quite beautiful. the cinematography had a strong angular theme going on, tons of perpendicular and parallel lines in almost every shot and with the motion of the camera there's lots of geometric vectorized imagery. the colors in some scenes almost looked cel-shaded which added even more to the overall surreal theme. you'll prolly like this movie if you're into more bugged out cinema, don't expect a straight ahead story with obvious climax or conclusion.

low budget rude bwoy masterpiece. some scenes weren't fleshed out but this is brilliant modern jamaican cinema. excellent acting all around except for wyclef.. mad max is top shotta #1.

very nice, not your run of the mill delinquent tale but hey it's Gallo so you know it's gonna be nefarious. sometimes i think he's pure idiot-savant.
i'm a big fan of gallo's soundtrack work. it's hard to believe that he can compose such sentimental beautiful music in light of his outrageous real-life character.

kim ki duk has the minimalist style locked down tight and 3-iron is another great example of how a low budget movie with barely any dialogue and an oddball story can express more than 5 blockbusters combined. loved it.

loved the grainy presentation, perfect for the story. the only thing that bothered me from time to time was that gosling's goofiness reminded me of david arquette.
