Gran Torino - R I actually expected to love the film, because the trailer was pretty exciting - a crotchety old man dealing with some old demons exacts revenge on a local gang to help out a neighbor. This was the basic premise, but I got a little more than I bargained for.
First off, I have to say that Clint Eastwood did a great job of portraying his character, and for that I applaud him. However, I struggled with the heavy use of racist remarks used throughout the film. It was a good film, don?t get me wrong, but having dealt a lot with people who are willing and unapologetic in their ignorance and bigotry, it made it a little difficult to see it portrayed so forcefully on the screen. The audience didn?t really help my state of mind, either - every time a racial slur was uttered, the crowd seemed to eat it up gleefully. There were some good comedic parts and plenty of ?vintage Eastwood? to go around, so thumbs up for that. The first half of the film made me cringe about every 5 minutes, the last half was less cringe-worthy.
The end of the film was well done, showing redemption through action rather than words, but it wasn?t enough to make me want to rush back in and watch the film again.
This is certainly one of those films I can appreciate without actually enjoying it. It was grating, irritating, at times funny and thought provoking. I guess the mark of a good film is that it evokes an emotional response from the viewer, so perhaps it was actually brilliant. It certainly evoked a response from me, so I will leave you with this.
It was a good, maybe even great film, and I hated it. :)
