| Movie: | Check out the lists on my page or my ratings. Love my action and comedy films but also up for a bit of intellectual art house, korean, french cinema too. |
|---|---|
| Actor: | I try not to have them but there are obvious eye candy choices like Angelina Jolie or Molly Ringwald(80's) but on the whole just like GOOD actors. |
| Director: | Takashi Miike. Still trying to watch every one of his films im up to about 25 at the moment. |
| Quote: | Any line from Anchorman - you can drop that in anywhere! |

On flixster mainly to review films or to find out about new ones or those that are still in production! If you'd like to recommend films, then go ahead! Not on here to be social, got my facebook and myspace for that! Will try and crack the top 100 reviews at some point because as a kid i used to watch 3 or 4 movies a day, so i have a lot to catch up on. I want to watch a lot more asian cinema as i've been into it since the mid 90's when i started with Jackie Chan films and then moved onto the more sensible stuff! Would like to watch a lot more British stuff too, but i never see it coming out so always miss it.
I'm a firm believer that the 5 star rating should only be given out sparingly, too many people give them out to films for stupid reasons like 'oh my god johnny depp is hot'. i know he's hot, doesnt mean i give the film 5 stars. go to johnnydepp.com and tell him you love him! Only 2 of my ratings are 5 stars, my favourite movie of all time and my favourite wrestling dvd of all time(yep, someone classes it as a film, but i had to rate it!!) And would i be stupid enough to see LOTS of films that id not like, hence why i dont use the half rating so much. Im a geek, but then again using the internet to talk to people you dont know about movies means you're one too. :) |

Quantum Quest: A Cassini Space Odyssey (2009)
Unrated
Another excellent cast, could be a good movie!
Is this the 4th movie or is it the second movie! (or even more confusing is this just a fake page?) I heard rumours that the cast of the first one would come back to do a direct sequel to the first movie, and if it's based in London should be fun.
The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor
PG-13
Oh dear! 3rd time is not the charm! Jet Li is so mis used its depressing, John Hannah plays the female role perfectly, but was overly annoying. The CGI had it's moments but i think i'd rather watch Scorpion King 2 than this again.

To Gillian on Her 37th Birthday
by BrianDVR'd this.
The film is only 12 years old and still it's like from a different, simpler world.
Total chick that is a little uneven, but the acting maks up for it.
Plus hilarious to see Freddie Prinze, Jr in what had to have been one of his first roles,
Cute -- leaves you with a good feeling. If you like chick flicks.

One Missed Call
by BrianTo tell the truth, this film is not majorly scary by any means, but I was still emgrossed in it --- it's fun to watch.
First of all, I love Shannyn Sossamon and will watch anything she's in, but also Sossamon and Burns had good chemistry on screen, I thought.
Yes, it's formulaic and very derivative, aside from the fact that it's a remake of J horror, but there's a popcorn flick element to it that makes it fun. It's fun and fans of Shannyn Sossamon will like this one.

The Honeymoon Killers
by BrianThis is the original film that is based on the Lonely Hearts Killers, Raymond Fernandez and Martha Beck, who would exploit women through the Lonely Hearts Club in the 1940s, take their money, and kill them.
The 2006 film Lonely Hearts is an updated version with Salma Hayek and Jared Leto in the roles, which I want to see now, but I wanted to see the original first.
The Honeymoon Killers is solid, but the truth of the lifes of the real people and the circumstances of the their upbringing and crimes is much more interesting than the movie lets on. I guess it had to be watered down for a 1969/1970 audience.
The acting iswell done tho and the film interesting enough, especially for the time.Hey, you should really see this!

Anatomy (Anatomie)
by BrianThis is a strange one, because it came out in 2000, yet it has the feel of a movie from ten years earlier. Plus, I saw it with dupped English voices and would have rather have seen it in German with subtitles.
It's a decent poremise and has potential, but it's handled so lamely and ameturishly.
See it if you love the genre, or if you love Franka Potente (which I do). Otherwisae, nothing special.Nothing special. See only if you like the genre or Franka Potente.

by BrianThe life of Marilyn Monroe, with Poppy Montgomery as the adult Marilyn.
Learned some things I didn't know before -- need to check how accurate it is.
Not sure if it's a Lifetime Movie or not, but it's a bit like one, but better than the average one, what with the cast.
One complaint: TOO LONG!If you lie Marilyn Monroe...

In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale
by BrianIt was a lot better than I expected, given the genre (not my favorite) and just reservations in general.
If you effectively leave your brain at the door it's a good enough story and the action is decent.
Another slightly different role for Jason Statham and nice to see Leelee Sobieski.
But there was some effed up casting! Lay Liotta (whenever I see him I pretty much assume the movie [or at least his part] will suck) and Burt Reynolds (who despite face lifts and botox and toupes galore is just this side of the retirement home to me). What was Boll thinking?
All in all tho, an ok film. It's ok if you leave your brain at the door.

Diary of the Dead
by DanielIt's not perfect - the film has many faults, and as, always, my review is pretty subjective, but I *loved* Diary of the Dead. It's the horror underdog of 2008 in my opinion.
"The film was shot with a Panasonic HDX900 and an HVX200. I did the final cut on Jason's laptop. I've added music occasionally for effect, hoping to scare you. You see, in addition to trying to tell you the truth, I am hoping to scare you, so that maybe you'll wake up."
Comprised of edited footage shot by film students, along with voice-over narration and assembled CCTV, web-cam and cell phone clips, Diary of the Dead depicts the outbreak of the dead 'waking up', and the ensuing plague that encompasses everything around it. Instead of a continuation from Day of the Dead or even Land of the Dead, Diary starts afresh, whilst still bearing the hallmarks of vintage George A. Romero. And appearances can be deceptive; this is no standard zombie horror film, or even that sub-genre of horror - the 'found footage' horror (a la Blair Witch Project, Cloverfield, [Rec] etc). This is first and foremost a social satire.
"The President continues to monitor the situation from his ranch"
There are parallels here, believe it or not, to the Bush Administration; the 'handling' of the outcome of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, human rights violations and torture. There's also witty comment and critique on the role of the media and the way in which a campaign of panic can affect people's responses, and how things can be edited in order to shape mood or personal gain. The manner in which Diary is filmed means there is also a lot of self-reflection and irony, strengthened by the narration and a bleak epilogue.
"I thought long and hard about whether to leave this footage in the film. I decided, in the end, to show you exactly what happened."
Executed with style and invention, Diary is also, of course, filled with some excellent zombie despatches. It's remarkable that after so many zombie films in a crowded market dangerously close to saturation, there's still plenty of ways in which to kill the undead. Here, two of the highlights are an I.V. stand and a bow and arrow, and for a low-budget independent film, there's plenty of satisfying blood and gore. Coming to Diary and expecting a gorefest though is likely to leave you disappointed - it's the political commentary that stands out the most and what has always made Romero a cut above the rest. So ignore some dodgy performances, some technical inaccuracies (which, thinking about it, could arguably have been added in by the narrator to add 'authenticity') and turn the lights out.
"Are we worth saving? You tell me."
Loads of people really hate this film, though I don't really understand why myself. Dodgy acting and a couple of techincal guffs aside, I loved it.

Head On
by DanielOne of the most depressing but gripping 'struggle in the closet' films I have ever seen, with a fantastic, charismatic and emotive performance from anti-hero Alex Dimitriades (who, judging from his IMDB page, needs to get a better agent). It's a niche subject perhaps, which is then squeezed into another minority - a traditional Greek family - but it's expertly written and played and actually has broad appeal. Ari's downward spiral (he starts close to the gutter and disappears into it by the time of the slightly rushed, bleaker than bleak ending) is gripping and entirely believable, the Aussie streets have a grimy/murky, hellish feel and some of the lines cross the boundaries of sexy/disturbing/distressing ("don't spill it"). Kinetic direction and a brilliant (and now nostalgic) soundtrack both ground and enhance a very good film. Pity about the off-putting poster art.
Worth a watch.

by BrianI had shied away from this film, mostly because I thought it looked boring, and I don't much care for Kevin Spacey, but I persuaded by Derek's review (thanks man)
Althought it's not without faults, it's more interesting than I anticipated because it's about more than just Vegas and counting cards and gambling. It's moreso about what having this ability (counting cards) can do to a person,
It does drag some in the middle and the male lead is flat to me, asd well as most of the cast really, but the movie itself is interesting. And the ending is satisfying.Hey, you should really see this!

Killer Diller
by BrianI'd been wanting to see this film for a while, mostly because I like Lucas Black and Fred Willard both, and the premise seemed ok for a non-thinking movie.
For those of you who have seen Camp (I know there are several on my list), I believe you will like this because the movies share similar themes (loveable misfits band together for support and for a creative outlet).
It's not groundbreaking or uber original, but it's fun and satisfying. A movie to see with friends.Hey, you should really see this!

My Bloody Valentine
by BrianI'm really starting to appreciate the campyness of this horror of this time period. Every movie is a certain mixture of intentional/unintentional comedy, but is also scary if you get into it.
And My Bloody Valentine is pretty good. While I'm sure that the remake will be something more like I'm used to seeing (coming out in 2009, starring Jensen Ackles, among others), there's something about the tone of this one that pulled me in and was addictive.
Alsom, for anyone who has seen it and remembers it, did anyone else think that the two male leads at times sounded like leprochauns with their accents? haha I don't know where this was meant to be set, but it was obviously America somewhere, right?
Worth a look for any horror fan :)Hey, you should really see this!

The Hills Have Eyes
by BrianContinuing in my quest to watch older, noteable horror films I hadn't seen yet...
This is Craven's second film, and it's a vast improvement over Last House on the Left. And the remake doesn't stray too far from the original, which is surprising.
While I do have a few complaints that I have with all horror films from the 70s (a lack of showing of blood, and the idea that screaming and over reacting is scary [NOT] to name a faw), this is pretty solid.
One thing I did notice is in one scene one man gets stabbed in the leg and "blood" spurts out that is clearly seen to be paint, Also, the son in the movie is a HORRIBLE actor, even for 70s horror.
But I mostly liked it and was pleased, and do reccomend it.Hey, you should really see this!
