Lars and the Real Girl
PG-13
Ryan Gosling continues with his great work in Half Nelson in this drama/comedy about a young man (Lars) who falls in love with an anatomically correct sex doll.
He is obviously dealing with some psychological problems having grown up with an absent mother and a distant father he has been unable to communicate emotionally with other people so finds some form of company in this doll, 'Bianca'.
Instead of laughing at him though the people in the town embrace his new 'relationship', taking her to 'work' and to get her hair done etc and refusing to let this delusion damage Lars.
There is a nice little romantic subplot between Lars and one of his fellow churchgoers and workmates who reminds me of Amy Adams in her ohmygodhowcuteisshe looks.
It's not jaw droppingly amazing but it's a solid dramedy.
Semi-Pro
R
After taking a shot at the Nascar circuit and ice skating Ferrell returns to the 70's of Anchorman to parody basketball. This time around he plays Jackie Moon, player-owner-coach of the Flint Michigan Tropics, one of the worst teams in the ABA but don't anyone tell Jackie that.
When it's decided the ABA is going to merge with the NBA but only the top 4 teams will get in Moon must find a way to get his team up from bottom place and into the holy grail of Basketball that is the NBA.
The movie is really not that funny. There is only so much of Ferrell one can take and his shtick is starting to get a little tired. There are moments when is manicness is still capable of producing belly laughs but they are becoming less and less frequent.
There is a decent soundtrack to this one with tracks from Curtis Mayfield and other 70's soul/funk greats.
I'd rank this below Anchorman which is his high watermark and Blades of Glory and Talladega Nights. This one is definitely for his fans only and even then only worth a rental.
Starter for Ten
PG-13
James McAvoy plays a working class student trying to prove himself at University by winning the University Challenge TV show. Along the way he meets two girls who will vie for his affections, one of them on his challenge team and the other a liberal activist.
It's basically a coming of age story set in the 80's to a fucking awesome soundtrack. The soundtrack itself is probably better than the movie but it was still enjoyable in it's own right. It won't go down as one of McAvoy's best (doesn't hold a candle to Atonement or Last King of Scotland) but is well worth a rental.
Once
R
A truly beautiful film with one of the greatest soundtracks of last year. Once was shot in 17days on a microbudget and the movie gives off that home video aesthetic which comes with that sort of production schedule. The two main characters are played by musicians rather than actors and so the piece has a lot greater realism. The director said something like he would rather have really really good singers who could act quite well rather than have really good actors who could sing ok.
And when you have a movie like Once were 80% of the film is about the music you can see he made the right choice. All that we need to know about their relationship is told through the songs - the way they sing them, the way they react to them and the meaning behind them.
It's such a beautiful movie that every time the two of them are on the screen together you feel like bursting into tears. The ending was so so beautiful but I don't want to spoil it. It's a tad bittersweet but awesome nonetheless. And it has music from The Frames in it! awesome.
So glad 'Falling Slowly' won at the Oscars over the multiple nominations for Enchanted.
Tell No One (Ne le dis à personne)
Unrated
A very solid French thriller from actor/director Guillaume Canet. We witness the murder of a mans wife out by a lake in the countryside outside of Paris and then revisit him 8 years later where he has just gotten an email from someone claiming to be his wife. From here the movie picks up the pace as the man tries to find his wife he realises he is being monitored by some less than pleasant eyes. Enlisting the help from one of his more seedy aquaintances the movie turns into a desperate cat and mouse game with the man trying to outrun the authorities and prove his innocence AND find his wife all at the same time.
The chase scene midway through the film is seriously awesome, especially with the crossing of the motorway and the entry into the banlieu areas of Paris. It's possibly a bit too long with an overwrought denouement but the earlier preceedings will outweigh any concerns over the ending.
Gone Baby Gone
R
An amazing directorial debut from Ben Affleck who is having an unlikely career resurrection at the moment thanks to this and a great turn in Hollywoodland.
Gone Baby Gone is set in Boston and deals with the dreaded topic of child kidnapping. Casey Affleck plays a detective who doesn't work with the police and can get information out of people who don't go to the police. He grew up in the area and understands it's rhythms and the people. No surprises then when he gets a knock on his door from the sister in law of the kidnapped child. As he gets involved in the case it ends up affecting him in ways he couldn't have thought possible.
This is a brilliant thriller which goes in places that you wouldn't expect. There are three parts to the film with one of them only loosely related to the other two. The first involves the search for the kidnapped child, the second another kidnapping case and the third is a riveting twist that turns the film on it's head almost.
The best thing about the movie apart from Affleck is that this film takes the audience seriously and forces them to question what they are watching. There is a huge moral question that comes up at the end of the film and the film doesn't seek to be didactic, leaving it to the audience to decide whether the decision was the right one or not. I don't want to give anything away about the ending but suffice to say the last few scenes are amazing.
Supporting Affleck in a great bunch of supporting roles are Morgan Freeman, Michelle Monaghan, Ed Harris and Amy Ryan. There are some great example of acting between Harris and Affleck especially in the hospital scene, damn that was good.

Harsh Times
by JasonLike everyone else who saw this I was expexting a horrible version of Training Day, and in a matter of speaking... It kind of is. They both do the whole "A day in the life of a gangster pretending to live the straight and narrow." The only thing that I truly do like more about Harsh Times then Training Day, is Christian Bale, who (once again) proves why he is one of the best actors out of there. I mean most of the roles I've seen him he does an amazing job how ever this is a huge show of his acting ability. He does an amazing job. The whole time I was in complete and utter awe that it was actually him. I almost want to go back and watch it again just to make sure, but I have better things to do. Like watch Fight Cclub again or something... Anyway Freddy Rodriguez also does a good job. Too bad it goes unnoticed when put next to Christian Bale. The story isn't the greatest. Bale and Rodriguez fall back into old habits while trying to change their lives for the better. Predictable pretty much the whole way through. In all honesty you'd do better just to watch Training Day and pretend that Denzel Washington was Christian Bale. Not that I ever do that or anything.... But yeah if your a fan of Bale like me or you want to see what Training Day would have been like if it hadn't been very good check it!!
Christian Bale plays a wanna be mexican WHAT?!?!

Menace II Society
by JohnI have to admit watching the excellent Menace 2 Society that I kind of feel like a loser. The Hughes Brothers were 20 when they made this powerful directorial debut. (What the hell happened to them?)
I just want to say right now though please don't call this a "hood" classic. It's a term that came from rich suburbanites who use the term to belittle the work of talented black filmmakers. Plan and simple Menace 2 Society is a great film with strong performances from Jada Pickett Smith, Larenz Tate and Tyrin Turner. The powerful and forceful but never preachy story of the dangers of the gangster lifestyle is one that you won't forget anytime soon.Know a lot of people have it under not interested but give it a chance.

I Am Legend
by Jason(CONTAINS SPOILERS!!!) I was with everyone in think that it looked dumb. But a lot of people said it's not that bad and that it's worth checking out. It's not. The story for this movie doesn't take long to set up. Virus kills everyone but Will Smith. DONE!!! Instead they drag it out with flash backs, which are acceptable but not with out more explanation. It almost feels as if he know that there are more people out there and is just in denial about it. The film also felt like it was caught in between a horror flick and a type of psychological last man on the planet thing. Where 28 Days Later pulled off the perfect combination of these two elements I Am Legend stumbles. The creatures were also disapointing in that they all look exactly the same. I mean give them some different clothes or scars or something, ANYTHING!! And while they looked realish from far away, once they got closer.... you could tell. Will Snith gives a decent performance. Nothing more then what I expected. The ending fel like it was a build up to something big and unexpected but there was no pay off. Everything I expected to happen, did. Bad as I thought it would be.

My Blueberry Nights
by JohnLets make this clear My Blueberry Nights is sadly isn't the cinematic masterpiece anyone who loves Wong Kar Wai wanted but My Blueberry Nights is still a very good film.
Well first off the idea of Wong Kai Wai directing Meet The Spartans would have gotten me excited. He does a wonderful job directing the film turning it into visual poetry despite replacing Christopher Doyle. The acting is strong throughout the entire cast including my future soulmate Natalie Portman proving everything I love about her talent in this film and the always terrific David Stratharin in his heartbreaking role (The Dude needs more leading roles).
Now it's that fact that's one of the problems with this film. I'm a big Norah Jones fan and she does a good job with her debut but I felt that she was better suited for a more of a supporting role and someone like Portman or Rachel Weisz should have taken over the lead because they could have brought so much more with it. As well the thing that caused the biggest problem was the script. No it isn't Leatherheads bad but considering how brilliant Chucking Express, Happy Together, In The Mood For Love and 2046 are you would have hoped for Wai Wong to have started his international film career with a bang.
Although as a movie itself it's very difficult to complain too much about (The ending is all types of perfect in my opinion.) but overall it's a very minor look for American audiences at the great things that should come from Wong Kai Wai in the future.Pretty minor Kai Wai Wong but still higher then anything I've ever given Michael Bay.

Gates of Heaven
by JohnIt's difficult to give a proper review to Gates of Heaven because there's so much that's great about the film that you can't really explain it. So I'll say 2 things.
1. If you don't get the subject matter of the film and why it's affective you have a heart of stone.
2. This is the film so great that Werner Herzog ate his shoe because of it's greatness.
So just see this wonderful film and hopefully you'll understand.Hey, you should really see this!

Stop Loss
by JohnAfter a year of crappy movies about Iraq lecturing us how bad war is, Stop-Loss ends up becoming the best of the Iraq films because it simply doesn't give a f*ck about the politics and instead focuses on the soldiers who are fighting this war.
It's been 9 long years since Kimberly Peirce has made Boys Don't Cry but Stop-Loss is proof that she hasn't lost her edge, heart or focus she had since her first masterpiece.
It's really an accomplishment and a tribute to how talented a filmmaker Pierce is. Without her this wouldn't have worked at all. It's her and her cast's passion and care for the subject that gives the film it's grieving heart. Ryan Phillippe finally escapes his pretty boy image and gives a performance of surprising power. Channing Tatum proves to be more then a pretty boy actor and shows that if he makes the right choices he can have a really great career. Though the best performance comes from Abbie Cornish and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Cornish delivers a breakout performance that doesn't provide a single bit of hollywood glitter and gives a complex performance that's rare in war movies for women. As for Gordon-Levitt? Wake the f*ck up, this guy is clearly one of the greatest actors of our generation and is perfectly cast here. His last scene in the film will stay with you for days.
So is the film perfect? Not really. The film slips into melodrama a bit too much for my liking and there really isn't much of an ending to this film. (Though that kind of works cause it doesn't bother to provide a end to a war that doesn't seem to end soon.)
Stop-Loss may not quite be the war masterpiece our generation need yet (Something tells me the film will age pretty well.) But with Stop-Loss and Boys Don't Cry Peirce has proven herself to be one of the bravest filmmakers right now. (Ironic how one of the few working female filmmakers in Hollywood is also one of the ballsiest huh?)Here's something rare, a film about Iraq that doesn't suck.

The War Zone
by JohnRecently I've talked to friend discussing who is the best example of a evil on screen. Daniel Plainview, Anton Churigah, Hannibal and Darth Vader were all mentioned. However after seeing Tim Roth's beautiful and underrated The War Zone I'd like to suggest that Ray Winstone's Dad is hands down the best example. This is easily the most overlooked performance of the last 10 years. (I only watched it because we and me friends were looking for a movie to watch at his house.) It's amazing how Winstone can be seem so kind one minute and the next we seem his doing unbelievably cruel things to his daughter and the weird thing is both sides are perfectly believable. Also the actress who played his daughter is nothing short of heartbreaking and Tilda Swinton even with little screen time proves that she's a fantastic actress.
The War Zone left me wondering why Roth hasn't bothered to make another film as a director? He's a extremely gifted filmmaker that doesn't hide anything for a happy ending. Even when the film almost becomes too unbearable to sit through (Some scenes just made me want to turn The War Zone off and just watch Enchanted with my little sister again.) It's a honest, gritty and depressing look at the issues of abuse and a near perfect film.A lot of friends have not rated it or rated it as not interest. Please give it a chance.

Overnight
by JohnIsn't ironic that the filmmaker of one of my least favorite films (Boondock Saints) has become the subject of one of my favorite documentaries in years. Overnight is a important lesson for any inspiring filmmaker how self worshipping can kill your career. Seriously this is probably the most unlikeable and mean person I've ever seen on screen. (Hell you have to be a egomaniac asshole to agree to doing this)
Is it a enjoyable film? Not really, Well the guy is Michael Scott if he really was a jackass and the see his rants are hilarious I can't say I enjoyed watching his downward spiral. I would say it's important for everyone who wants to break into the film industry to see just how important it is to keep your self grounded.Must see for you film nerds.

EdTV
by JasonOk why people complain that this is compared to "The Truman Show" when it shouldnt't are soooo wrong. Since "The Truman Show" was obviously inspiration, if not the entire basis for the movie, I feel it is VERY neccessary to compare the 2. Lets start with the basics, the stories differ in the fact that Truman is unaware while Ed volunteers. HOW CAN YOU BE THAT STUPID!? Who is dumb enough to sign an unbreakable contract with a ceo to film EVERY aspect of his life. On to the next item on my list. The acting, The Truamn Show has several great actors the most notable being Jim Carrey. EdTV contains several actors that make me think there is no hope left mankind, the most notable being Rob Reiner. Truman was a very good drama. EdTV was an unfunny comedy. Truamn himself was interesting, funny at times, and quite intelligent. Ed I don't think graduated from highschool. I could go on for hours but I'll end here...
It's stupid!

Funny Games (2008)
by JohnTo be fair I should be giving this film 2 stars but just because Michael Haneke tries so bloody hard to get you to despise Funny Games it seems only fair to grant Haneke his wish.
This is easily the most painful remake since Gus Van Sant thought remaking Psycho was a good idea. Now I also wasn't a fan of the first Funny Games and only saw it because of the cast and the hope Haneke saw why the first film didn't work. I was very wrong in fact I had a more difficult time sitting to watch this film because 15 minutes in the film I figured out that I just payed to see the art house Michael Bay pull his dirty tricks on the audience.
Now as I said this is actually a 2 star film because of the performances from the always superb Naomi Watts and Tim Roth. Plus some decent performances from Michael Pitt and Brady Corbert considering how poorly written their roles are. Also I have to admit Haneke created a well made film.
Then again the problem with this film is Michael Haneke and his thinking that he's taking a high moral route by trying to show us how America looks at violence as a form of entertainment and how does he do this? By forcing his audience to sit through 2 hours of Hostel like violence and torture. Yep he's really sticking it to us and Rambo 4 is really a anti-war film right? What I'm trying to say is that by doing this without any real story and have 2 guys who look like they got kicked out of Alex's group, all Haneke is doing is sinking to the very low levels of the Saw films and at least the saw films know what there doing.
So is Funny Games the worst film of the year? No (Still 10,000 B.C) Is it the most hypocritical film of the year? F*ck Yes. Art house crowd for God's sake please don't give this film the attention it wants. All your doing is suggesting to Haneke that were as ignorant and stupid as he thinks we are. Please don't see this movie.
