Max Payne - PG-13 Hard to believe really how much money they can spent and end up with something so stupid as this. Still it's better than TDK as it has less of irritating dialogs, but rest of it is just as bad. November 17, 2008

Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day - PG-13 It's a pleasant flick to pass the time, but nothing more than that. At least, it has nothing irritating about it, as it seams to be necessary with most of this "pass the time" movies. I did however expect a bit more. What can you do. November 17, 2008

Burn After Reading - R For starters, I'd like to talk to you about Keanu Reeves. Why Keanu when he's nowhere to be found in this movie? Because Keanu is often regarded as the worse actor ever. Even worse than Victor Mature. And yeah, sure, he often looks like he can hardly remember his lines, like he's not aware he's in the film at all, overall like he has no idea what the heck is he doing there, or where "there" might be. Yet, he is such a fine, subtle actor when compared to his highness Brad Pitt. They are even of the similar age, although looks much younger, while Pitt, every time I see him, looks more and more like shar pei. Not that it matters, I just had to mention it :). What matters is that he would be brilliant in this role that was so butchered by Mr. Pitt. Forgetful as he seams, it would still be a bliss compared to dreadful awareness of camera that Brad just can't get rid of. Brad couldn't stop overacting if his life depended on it.
Rest of the cast does fairly well, of course. Sure, they don't exactly give mind blowing performances, who would expect that, but at least they do not annoy. They are all a bit silly, and painfully aware that they are, which feels so worn out, as such cases you can only see in movies. Real people are never consciousness of how exactly ridiculous they appear. But, what can you do, it's Coen brothers film. They can't outgrow these type of characters. One performance that does stand out, is Clooney's. He is on the very verge of overacting, but manages to cut it down to size, and even to look insecure at moments, which is magnificent, considering.
The story it self is typical Coen brothers story. To fast, to "smart", flooded with number of characters, and oh, so, cool. Grand in every sense. So smooth to watch, it turns stale. It had potential to achieve something more, but submitting to conformity and popular demand for shallowness, fail to use, or abuse these elements (except for laughs) and remains in the realms of averageness. All in the name of high ratings. God forbid they have a message. Messengers tend to get shot. Who wants that.

Journey to the Center of the Earth (Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D) - PG Oh, this was so dumb, but dumbness was a virtue in this case. There is no way to do Journey to the Center of the Earth in a serious fashion, so the fact that they made it as ridiculous as possible was the best choice ever. Some may complain about it, but should be reminded that this is Brendan Fraser movie after all, and keeping that in mind, it's perfect. October 31, 2008

Misery - R Seen this way back ago and could only remember basics. Guy with both legs broken in a accident treated by a crazy woman who would do anything and everything to keep him there in her remote and desolate home. Now I finally decided to revisit Misery.
So powerful and gripping. Knowing what is about to happen in a sledgehammer scene doesn't take anything away from it. I cried louder than he did.
As for the story, I guess it's only natural. Ideas such as this always come racing trough my head whenever I meet someone for the first time, and he seams to know more about me than I would want him.
And then, there is Kathy/Norman Bates who manages to be frightening even when being playful. No wonder she got Oscar for this. She deserved at least three for this one role. Not the girl you want to mess with.

Jarhead - R Not sure what they were trying to do here. If they wanted to show how marines are all idiots, which would be expected considering the title, they succeeded admirable. Complaining how they didn't even kill anyone?!? Referring to the war as their "job"?!? Fighting with each other over petty insults. Complete idiots. You can't connect with them, you can't feel for them, you can't understand them, you can just watch them like monkeys in the zoo. For this to be bottom line of the movie you would at least need one characters who has a mind, and there is no such in here. There is no great catharsis in there, there is nothing. Sure cinematography is fine but nothing spectacular, as for acting, there was no real challenge for actors except to get naked on several occasions if that constitutes as acting? At moments it would be fluent, at others it would slip into pure boredom. Disappointed. October 21, 2008

Stranger Than Fiction - PG-13 There is certain type of movies that I tend to call misanthropic, or Gibsonian movies, since those are typical in opus of Mel Gibson. In fact, directors who make this kind of movies, usually make no other kind (von Trier, Iñárritu) but Gibson is just most famous among them all.
These directors, I can't escape the feel, have the characters in their movies just so that they could play god in somebody's, anybodies, life. Characters often get killed, or simply wish to be dead.
For some reason, these are considered to be art. Or "difficult" movies, and whenever I state my dislike for them, I'm being told "it's not for everyone" or "that's life!". I beg to differ. I personally love difficult movies. One of my favorite would be "Magdalene Sisters". But these, these are just plain dumb. People are not all ugly on the inside, stupid, arrogant and conceited, there is bound to be someone, every now and then that shines, and who ever is not able to see this, not only isn't an artist, but is the disgusting character of his own lame work.
This movie seams to share my view on the subject, as it forces one of those miserable authors to face their own heroes, and their personal insignificance. Nothing we hear of the novel is really all that good, but is nevertheless regarded as such. Characters are often so enchanted by this novel, that a lot tend to think it's all right for a real person to die in order that this (obviously lame) book could be finished.
As for movie it self, it works perfectly. The visual style is there to entertain you while plot starts kicking in, and as you get more involved, there is less and less of the GUI to distract you. Actors are mostly good, especially Thompson who just sitting in empty white room by typewriter shaking, trembling, going insane, makes you feel more for dying man, then dying man himself. Characters are all well developed, and all seam very much at ease (i.e. mostly if you see their feet, they are not wearing shoes nor socks) making it more apparent how main character is stiff and in need of change.
The real story however is the one ironical, cause all of the sudden, all the details which seamed excessive at start (most notably an Apple and the watch) find their place in universe and give true ironic twist to the story.

Pride and Prejudice - PG I even prefer this version to the one from 1995. Sure, it's less faithful to the book, but is also three times shorter, and simply can't include everything. Changes made to the remaining parts were all in right place and managed to intensify emotions. Honestly, the way I see it, the only plus BBC version had over this is that it was so much like a book. There were only few scenes added, and those are regarded as best ones, so obviously, not sticking to the book while filming, seams like a good idea. Here however, there are some wonderful camera tricks, not just merely showing of sites. Sisters are way more beautiful, as they are supposed to be, as are Mr. Bingley and Mr. Darsy (as much as I love Firth, he just isn't strikingly handsome as described by Austen). Insignificant characters were kicked out entirely, and some characters are changed from their description in book, most notably Mary Bennet who is more likable here, Miss Darcy, and of course Mr. Darsy, who seams more confused than arrogant, but then again, he does appear that way in the book as well on second reading. The Longbourn estate, and Bennet sisters do indeed seam poor, and I loved presence of animals and often rains, which were nowhere to be seen in older version. Of all the changes, I enjoyed "first proposal" most of all, as now they were both standing, soaked in wet and looked much more aggravated. Big plus also goes for casting of Mr. Bennet and Lady Catherine. The only mis is in that some lines are raved to quickly leaving the feel they are rehearsed (as they in fact are) instead of making them sound naturally. October 20, 2008

RKO 281: The Battle Over Citizen Kane - R Really interesting, telling story about greatest story ever told. Liev Schreiber doesn't look one bit like Welles, but what can you do. Cromwell, Malkovich and Griffith are wonderful in their roles, and there are some truly beautiful lines in there. But other then that, this is more like educational movie and therefore has nothing of the greatness it revolves around. October 19, 2008

The Deaths of Ian Stone - R Disappointing. Predictable. Stupid. October 14, 2008

Mulberry Street - R Interestingly enough, having no money invested in this movie was at the same time a blessing and a curse. Sure special effects look ridiculous so they resort to building up atmosphere. Characters are mostly very engaging, that you will feel they are wasted in a horror flick. They could've done so much better in a drama. There are some cheesy scenes, they sure could do without, like the green robe at the end of the movie. But then again it's mostly every man for him self, so at least in that regard you could say there was no BS in this movie. Better then most horror flicks I've seen recently. October 11, 2008

Iron Man - PG-13 Trailer really did no favors to this movie. From it I assumed this would be a total crap, and was in real shock that it was so praised. I decided to see it as there was a bunch of actors that I really like in it, including Paltrow who looks gorgeous with Irish hair. Also seeing that Favreau directed it had some significance as well. And it turned out to be truly fun experience. Not nearly as dumb as trailer would have you believe. October 11, 2008

Malena - R One thing I just can't figure out. Why does Monica has to be brutally beaten in every movie she is in? Is that what she believes to be art?
Anyway, a movie is just to boring.

Dancer in the Dark - R Whenever I try to explain why I hate this movie everyone tells me how it is difficult movie, and that it is not for everybody. But it's not. I have nothing against difficult movies. What I can't stand are misanthropic movies, "the Gibson movies" such as this one. "Magdalene Sisters" is difficult movie. A good movie. This? This is crap. Like "Amores Peros". Like "Apocalypto". Whenever I watch Lars von Treir movie, I got a felling that he is just trying to have a revenge on somebody who made fun of him, and now, since he couldn't stand up to them in reality, he'll do it trough the fiction. But why would i want to watch a movie that walks such far distances just to humiliate, destroy, neglect it's main character. And don't tell me these kind of thing are "life". No one is such a dumb, petty person as Selma. No one will kill just cause someone said "pretty please".
Recently I have totally gave up on Treir. If a movie starts and I see word "Zentropa" I just turn it off. That's as much as I can take from von Treir, sure a skillful director, but worst storyteller and second most hateful person among directors. If you love to feel miserable, if you like being spat at, if you think that life is nothing but cruel, sure, this may just turn out to be perfect film for you.

Psycho - R First time I saw this was on a big screen at cinema museum where seats are uncomfortable, air stinks of sweat and projector makes funny noises typical of, say, J! Horror genre. I didn't care, as I was so cited to finally see a movie I heard so much about. Didn't enjoy it all that much. Famous "Shower scene" was just to fake to be scary, the staircase scene was even worse, and acting seemed strange. Thats what you get when you bring high expectations to cinema.
Some years went by, and I've seen it again. Man, oh man. Every little peace of this film was perfect. Sure, those scenes look fake, but who cares. The music, the camera, the script, even the acting, everything seems to be perfect on second watching. Staircase scene can make you jump even though you know what's it about. Every word from Normans lips makes your skin crawl, and the fake shower scene is all the more gruesome for that very same reason.

I'm Not There - R I was so cited when I heard about this. Six different actors, one of which is little black kid, the other a woman, and third Richard Gere all to play Bob Dylan?!!? I had to see it. When I did, I fell in love with it. Many say it's pretentious. So what? What's so bad about pretentiousness? Do those people ever say for a book that it's pretentious? For a painting? How come every good movie has to be called that? Perhaps those people are just so used to bad movies, that they got convinced that all movies are lame, and whenever they encounter something with higher standards, in order for it to fit their idea of "all movies = bad" they just have to label it something?
I don't know how much there is truth in portrayal of Dylan's mind works, as movie intentionally sticks to all fallacy surrounding him. I just know that if Dylan is like this, then he is very much like me. :)
Most actors are really good at this, it's disturbing when you realize that Cate never knew much about Dylan before this. Perhaps. Bale was the weakest link here. He is overacting it most of the time, and looks completely inadequate. Everything else, the camera, the script, the way every "other side of Dylan" is approached, and eventually merged together, the use of his lyrics either visually or just uttered here and there by actors. The movie is a spider web, that you'll get tangled up in (blues).
Sure you can call it pretentious. But only if you have never created anything, and never felt that rush. This movie is masterpiece.

Seven (Se7en) - R This one is fine film, yet there is something that I can't overlook. As you watch it, everything is done in a way that won't fright away those with flair for more commercial movies. And since this is supposed to be disturbing movie, it falls short, at least for those with more extravagant taste. Anyway, it's still skillful movie, with good light, good screenplay. Most of the actors are at their usual mode, nothing to special there. What really does elevate this movie from the averageness is Spacey. He is the sole reason to return to this again, occasionally. Pitt on the other hand, came really close to ruining it completely. October 4, 2008

You Don't Mess with the Zohan - PG-13 This is one of those stupid movies you just can't stop watching. Who cares if it's dumb if it makes you laugh? Though I wish they left poor cat alone :\ October 4, 2008

Catch-22 - R It may seem surreal and dreamlike, yet who ever saw a war from the inside knows this is exactly the logic followed. And although you will laugh most of the time, it will still leave you feeling as hit by a truck. I loved it. I think everyone who thinks army is a good way to earn a pay check should see this.
The madness is ever present in this movie. Dark humor simply goes with war time. Either that or you'll join the mad and start killing. The list of amazing actors here is endless. There are scenes that simply take your breath away, and the best part is, you know those are not CGI, so you have to respect them. I just wish movies like this were still made in Hollywood.

The Incredible Hulk - PG-13 It wasn't boring. What more can you ask from this type of movie? It's a rare chance to see Norton in a movie, who could complain? October 3, 2008

The Sound of Music - G This movie is so sweet, it makes you sick. Every part of it is so pink and fluffy and the only thing missing are singing animals. Kids are very good, grass is very green, sky oh so blue. Singing nuns are just to much. There are two movies in there, one being the love musical about confused girl who wants to become a nun, but ends up marrying very rich and handsome guy. The other is one about family who fled their beloved country so they would not be the part of Nazi regime. Despite the odds, this combination works rather well, and presence of this gloomy part is what saves entire movie from drowning in sugar. September 25, 2008

The Recruit - PG-13 Well. This was rather boring. I would drift so easily while watching this, I even caught my self thinking would I eat a burrito if Pacino would hand it to me and tell me it was "heaven".
No.
For the parts I was paying attention, it was very predictable, or just dumb, like, for security reasons they have no floppy's, but they do have usb in CIA. Come on.
It's good to pass the time, but DO NOT TAKE SERIOUSLY. Very plain, average movie.

Fifty Pills - Unrated This had some really great moments. It reminds you of those movies, such a "lock, stock and..." where a clumsy guy has to do a "job", except that it's not trying to be cool (movie that is), and instead goes for funny. Thank god for that, I just can't stand those "cool" movies with slow motion and witty thugs. Unfortunately, it was stuffed with bunch of pointless things, like comedy of awkward situations, (each more predictable then the last one), stupid, stupid love story with a girl that couldn't possibly be any more flat and boring, which has a very fine roommate, who apart from making lead lady seem even more bleak, hardly has any purpose in the movie. And oh, some disturbingly bad acting. So, this was a combination of predictable and very unpredictable moments. Although you will be annoyed, there still are some good reasons to see it.
