| Frankenstein - Unrated | Some may prefer James Whales equally excellent sequel - Bride of Frankenstein, but for me it's this 1931 original. Pathos, madness and the monster who didn't ask for any of it! | January 31, 2007 | N/A | |||
| Das Boot (The Boat) - R | I own 3 versions of this on DVD - every time I put it on, 3 hrs never flies by so quickly. Alarm!!! | January 31, 2007 | N/A | |||
| Vertigo - PG | Hitchcock had more masterpieces than Da Vinci. I could have picked one or two from a list of more than a dozen. I love the way that this is a very personal film for him and his controlling nature saturates James Stewarts character. Obsessive, compulsive and in 70mm - most definitely ordered. | January 31, 2007 | N/A | |||
| Cliffhanger - R | The funniest comedy of the last 10000 years. Flying Stallone just cracks me up, with the amount of liberties this film takes with suspension of belief, I'm surprised that everyone involved didn't develop Pinnochio-esque schnozzers. Entertaining like nothing else if you leave your brain turned off, oh and the trailer for it is outstanding - probably one of the best ever. Seriously. | January 28, 2007 | N/A | |||
| The Usual Suspects - R | Show me the keys you fucking cocksucker..! Does anyone else reckon that Keyser Soze is the burnt bloke in the bed with the bandages? He is prime suspect if you ask me ~ Verbal Kint is just too obvious. | January 20, 2007 | N/A | |||
| The People Vs. Larry Flynt - R | Lacklustre performance from Woody "meh" Harrelson as porn master Larry Flynt. Courtney Love has that weird aura about her where you know it's not good for you, but you just can't seem to stop watching. Ed Norton really is crap in this too, which is the way of things with a lot of his output. | January 20, 2007 | N/A | |||
| Girl, Interrupted - R | Buddy movie crossed with One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest - all girl cast, with the always delicious and watchable Winona Ryder. It doesn't seem to work though - cliched, montage ridden and overly mawkish and sentimental steering the viewer too forcefully rather than gently taking you by the hand. Whoppi Goldberg is great though. | January 4, 2007 | N/A | |||
| Der Himmel über Berlin (Wings of Desire) (The Sky Above Berlin) - PG-13 | Visual poetry. Left me a bit speechless really - in a good way! | January 3, 2007 | N/A | |||
| Female Prisoner #701 - Scorpion - Unrated | 1972 exploitation flick cum rape revenge drama/women behind bars flick. It has gallons of squirting blood, naked women galore and plenty of mean prison guard offering their idea of fair treatment. It may be the same age as me but it looks pretty fresh today if you ignore some long zoom close ups etc. The dvd transfer I watched was great too. | December 31, 2006 | N/A | |||
| The Old Dark House - Unrated | James Whale directs with an emphasis heavy on the atmosphere and with kick arse witty dialogue despite it's age, this film is awesome! Karloff is cast as a dumb but agressive butler to one of the strangest households in cinema history. Recommended! | December 31, 2006 | N/A | |||
| Freaked - PG-13 | Silly rubber make up and gooey effects heavy tale of an air-head gen x actor who takes the large amount of money to promote a dirty no good large chemical companies products. Hilarity ensues when he is held captive along witha few mates and subjected to a freaky transformation when he is deliberately doused with chemicals (from the company he's working for) by a mad 'freak show' creator. | December 31, 2006 | N/A | |||
| Gallipoli - PG | Lyrical tale from Peter Weir of a naive sprinter and his slightly more worldly wise mate, signing up to go and fight for their country during WWI. Leisurely paced and as the opening says it's more about the journey to the destination than the destination itself. One scene with shells and bullets raining down on swimmers is quite superb. Mel Gibson is one handsome devil too. | December 29, 2006 | N/A | |||
| Escape from L.A. - R | Listen to the audio commentary www.coolshite.net and this film is not nearly as bad.. | December 26, 2006 | N/A | |||
| The Red Shoes - R | Powell and Pressburger hit yet another buls-eye with this beautifully shot and acted tale of the stage and ballet. Jack Cardiff's cinematography is simply superb. | December 26, 2006 | N/A | |||
| Murderball - R | Again, another Cinemaslave Joe suggestion and with the DVD being slapped with Jackass stickers - not one I would have checked out otherwise. Wow! I am so glad I did - a moving, funny and inspirational tale of paraplegics giving it their all in wheelchair rugby - sounds shit right? - Check it out for one of the best docco's out there! | December 26, 2006 | N/A | |||
| Grizzly Man - R | Cinemaslave Joe persuaded me to give this a go and I am so pleased that I did. The irony is that the more the 'star' interracts with the wildlife, the less wild they become - trustin man too much perhaps and thus becoming easier prey for poachers. The film was deeply moving, especially the scenes with Herzog listening to the final horrific moments at the camp. Did anyone else think that the pathologist was a creepy guy, seemingly enjoying talking about his grisly duties? | December 26, 2006 | N/A | |||
| La Double Vie de Véronique (The Double Life of Veronique) - R |
Two physically identical girls, one living in Poland and the other in France are mysteriously linked in more than one respect. Each have musical talents, a weak heart and doubts over their lovers. Although they have never met, when Veronika collapses while performing onstage, Veronique immediately feels her life has changed profoundly...
Kieslowski makes Ridley Scott look like he's directing blindfolded and David Lynch noodling inanely. Effortless control of mood from the sadly missed master. |

| Azumi 2: Death or Love - Unrated | It does go from set piece fight scene to the next but with action like this - I'm certainly not complaining! | December 26, 2006 | N/A | |||
| Lawrence of Arabia - PG | The Epic to die for - you know the story and will not need me to tell you why you should all have this in your top tens. If ever have the chance to see the 70mm print in a theatre, then I promise you that you will never be the same again. | December 23, 2006 | N/A | |||
| The Wizard of Oz - G | Watched this at the cinema on the 17th December, with a brand new remastered print. Wow - simply breathtaking, the colours jumping off the screen with vibrancy, the songs having new vigour and the story just as good as ever. | December 18, 2006 | N/A | |||
| King Kong - Unrated |
I can't recall a time without Kong in my life. I must have seen this while I was still in nappies but can remember every detail from it. It's funny to think that a metal model skeleton and fur can emote more than most of Hollywoods finest, that the SFX still beat most CGI into a cocked hat and the score has yet to be beaten.

| Thumb Wars - Unrated |
Hi-larious pastiche of Star Wars with talking thumbs. Incredible facial expressions, comic and timing and way better acting than Jake Lloyd from all involved - with a surprisingly high standard of special effects. It reminded me of the good old days of The Adam and Joe Show.
Oooby Dooby Scooby Dooby Benooby indeed... |

| The Last King of Scotland - R |
A young recently qualified Dr. decides to do some work in Uganda. Through a series of events he soon remarkably becomes President Amin's personal physician - and confidante. His morals are put to task as the amiable and generous nature of Amin soon crumbles to reveal his true nature...
Well acted and entertaining - especially Forest Whittaker as Amin - but it had some bad cliched moments and an inappropriate 'action' score that took me out of the suspense. Recommended though. |

| Pump up the Volume - R |
Teen angst high school dramas don't come much better than this. Lonely quiet Christian Slater barely says a word at school through the day - but alone at night hosts a pirate radio show as Happy Harry Hard-On, spreading the dirt on what really goes on in school by the corrupt teachers and principal. Samantha Mathis stars as the love interest - with subversive themes and funny one liners you really can't go wrong.
So Be It. |

| Tombs Of The Blind Dead (Noche del terror ciego) - PG | Daft from the outset - with the crappest most unscary undead ever. Big on atmosphere though. | December 5, 2006 | N/A |
