| The Princess Blade - R | Underwhelming from the day for night opening. The fight scenes were OK, but the middle section really sucked, but any film with an unhappy ending gets an extra point from me! | December 4, 2006 | N/A | |||
| An Evening with Kevin Smith - Unrated |
Well I was looking for Evening Harder (part 2) on here as I just watched that, but as ever flixster doesnt have it yet..
I could watch Kevin Smith for hours - and indeed if you get these 2 two part dvd sets you can! Each runs for over 4 hours - and a fuckin hi-larious. Part1 highlight being the Superman story - and Part2 has ninjas rescuing Jesus from the cross! |

| The Man Who Cried - R |
Beautifully shot, woodenly acted, underwritten story of a Russian refugee in pre-war England and then WW2 Paris.
Ricci is as ever frowny, miserable and particularly lovely. |

| The Aristocrats - Unrated | If you're idea of a fun movie is hearing some of america's most well known standy up comedians tell the filthiest, most appallingly bad taste versions of the joke known as The Aristocrats - then you're just like me! Not one to watch with the in-laws present! | November 25, 2006 | N/A | |||
| 21 Grams - R | Three lives become intertwined following a tragic accident. Riveting and heartbreaking and finally uplifting - this is a superb film. | November 24, 2006 | N/A | |||
| Ladies in Lavender - PG-13 |
Charles Dance directing Dames Judi Dench and Maggie Smith - it doesn't get much more English than this.
A mysterious Polish castaway drifts onto the shores of the isolated Cornish home of a pair of spinsters sisters. The pair nurse him to health, Dench's crush on the young man fuelling her fervour for the task and embarrassing her uptight sibling. This hopeless devotion drives the film's plot and poignancy, especially when her jealousy of a holidaying artist (Natasha McElhone) looks set to interfere with Andrea's future happiness |

| Casino Royale - PG-13 |
Think of it as Bond - Year One. His character is built up throughout the film, before tearing him to shreds and leaving you in no doubt about why he becomes the Bond we all know from all the other films - ruthless, tough and treating women so badly.
Daniel Craig was excellent, portraying an incredible physically menacing presence, Fleming's 'thug in a dinner jacket' we're never more true, before showing his more sensitive side. Every hit, punch and roll makes you wince for him - and those piercing blue eyes can convey so much without a word being spoken, the mark of a truly great actor. On the downside, it had more endings than Return of the King and as such over stayed its welcome by about 15 minutes, the card playing scenes didnt quite have me on the edge of my seat, and there is a total rip off from Stagecoach/Raiders of the Lost Ark - that had me rolling my eyes. Daniel Craig is a great Bond - way better than Moore, Dalton, Brosnan and Lazonby. I would seriously rate him against Connery - here's hoping the best is yet to come in future films. |

| The Cable Guy - PG-13 |
Under appreciated darker than dark comedy with Jim Carrey on top form, Mathew Broderick underplaying as ever, cameos from a skinny Jack Black, George Segal and serving wench Janeane Garofalo - "There were no utensils in medieval times, hence there are no utensils AT Medieval Times. Would you like a refill on that Pepsi?... There were no utensils but there was Pepsi? "
The karoake scene with the Jefferson Airplane song is just too funny |

| Versus - Unrated |
There are 666 portals to the other side, and somewhere in Japan lies the home of the 444th. It is here that Prisoner KSC2-303 escapes from his fellow inmates to rendezvous with a group of men who will lead him to safety. After he realises that the price of his freedom is the death of a female hostage, he refuses to comply with his rescuers' plans and blood is spilled.
But when, in the aptly named Forest of Resurrection, long dead yakuza fighters come back to life to avenge their own deaths, a battle against these living dead assassins ensues. Soon his quest for freedom becomes a desperate fight to simply stay alive. Plenty of action, gore and zombies - but strangely flat and boring. |

| El Laberinto del Fauno (Pan's Labyrinth) - R | Dark, twisted and beautiful. A real contender for film of 2006, and only loses 1 point for having a one dimensional bad guy and not enough labyrinth scenes. | November 19, 2006 | N/A | |||
| The Italian Job - G | Well now. Fulham. Bit dodgy at the moment. | November 18, 2006 | N/A | |||
| Azumi - Unrated |
Kicked arse big time, with beautiful camera work, amazing choreographed action scenes, moving characterisation and a drop dead gorgeous leading lady.
I know that the film is based on a comic, but I havent heard if its any good - does anyone know? The final 40 minutes of the film - after Azumi's lesbian dalliance - are simply superb. The androgynous bad guy is impressive too. |

| Come and See (Idi i smotri) - Unrated |
Elem Klimov's powerful, mesmerising and dynamic award winning feature has been deservedly hailed as one of the greatest war films ever produced. Set in Soviet Belarus during WWII, the story follows Florya, a newly enlisted innocent partisan, as he staggers dazed and petrified through the merciless horror of the struggle against a cruel German aggressor.
Essentially, the film is a rite of passage and Florya's face physically ages during the progression of the film as he is subjected to ever increasing brutal warfare and maniacal ethnic cleansing, routinely committed by the German forces. The film's title is derived from the Book of Revelation and its call for witnesses to 'come and see' the carnage and devastation wrought by the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. The imagery created by Klimov is stunning and the battle scenes frighteningly realistic: the director actually uses real ammunition during filming for maximum authenticity. Such brutality shocks to the core and the director's careful attention to style and detail make it all too believeable whilst leaving the audience stunned and bewildered to the very last. Highly recommended! |

| Casshern - Unrated | If I was marking the film on its visual merits alone, then it'd be a 5/5. But it was overlong, boring and now a few hours after watching it, I have forgotten what it was about. It did remind me a lot of a comic called ' The Red Star' though... | November 12, 2006 | N/A | |||
| The Prestige - PG-13 | Finest film of my 2006. Black Cats and Top Hats! This was marvellous from beginning to end, with nuanced performances, intrigue, emotion, drama and originality. Plus the best cinematography (by Wally Pfister) in a long time. Praise the cinema gods for Chris Nolan! Totally gripping from start to finish, with the films subject matter, i found myself concentrating on the tiniest details, waiting for 'the prestige' - and when it comes.... its worth it. | November 11, 2006 | N/A | |||
