Wow! My favourite movie of 2009 so far. Take the lead actress from Audition, add lots of Braindead/Machine Girl gore, add the humour from Bad Taste and the result is the beautifully shocking and inventive Tokyo Gore Police.

When Beckham Met Owen (2004,  Unrated)
When Beckham Met Owen
This is the debut film directed by Hong Kong's Anthony Wong.

If you're not familiar with football, David Beckham and Michael Owen are two very famous English footballers. Set in Mongkok, Hong Kong, 'When Beckham Met Owen' is a 'coming of age' film for two thirteen-year-old football fanatics. David (Kelvin Lau) and Michael (Eric Leung) are best friends, they are classmates, they play football together and they spend most of their time together. Their youthful world is captured in football outtakes, split-screen conversations and clever stop-start video editing. Forever competitive on the field, they start to find themselves being competitve for the attention of a young girl, Winnie (Jojo Yau). As puberty brings about changes, David becomes more interested in talking about sex whereas Michael doesn't feel comfortable about the subject. Michael's feelings for his best friend start to become complex and he begins to feel detached from his friends. Eventually, Michael must face the feelings he has for David.

Anthony Wong has created an interesting, charming, quirky and sincere portrayal of two best friends which deals with everyday problems such as poverty, relationships, school and growing up. At no point was it implied that Michael is gay or labelled queer and I found the ambiguity of Michael's feelings very refreshing. I hope to see more of Wong's work in the future.

Happy Accidents (2001,  R)
Happy Accidents
One of my all-time favourite movies. Although it does include moments of comedy I wouldn't feel comfortably calling Happy Accidents a 'romantic comedy'. To me, a 'romantic comedy' is a light-hearted story, a couple get together, then split up, then get back together again and it ends happily. The audience is entertained but unaffected. See Kate & Leopold.

I group Happy Accidents in the same category as Lost & Delirious, Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind, Untamed Heart, My Life Without Me.

I love this movie, the acting is terrific, Vincent D'Onofrio is outstanding, and of course, Marisa Tomei is ever dependable. Vincent's character (Sam) reminds me a little of Prot from K-Pax. The question being asked all the way through the movie is whether or not Sam is who he says he is or is he just another screwball from the local mental asylum.

Dead Snow (Død snø)
Easily the best Zombie Flick of 2009. It's funny, it is imaginative (death sequences!), it has lots of gore and it has great-looking Nazi zombies! I enjoyed the references to other movies (especially Evil Dead) and there was a genuinely creepy scene about the history of the Nazi living dead. If you are planning to go skiing this winter, Dead Snow contains excellent survival advice if you are buried by an avalanche, amongst other things.

All About Lily Chou-Chou (Riri Shushu no subete) (2002,  Unrated)
All About Lily Chou-Chou (Riri Shushu no subete)
I really wasn't sure how I felt about this movie until a day after I watched it. The story focuses on various characters who are essentially lost souls. They find comfort in the fictional singer Lily Chou-Chou and her music which is described as coming from the 'ether'. Ethereal. The story can be quite slow at times and is ultimately tragic. What I found beautiful about this movie is how it is presented. The dreamy scenic cinematography interspersed with documentary-style filming. The documentary style represents the characters' experiences, whether good or bad, and helps to portray a sense of realism. The slow dreamy sequences represent the 'ether' when the characters are free of their worries and in a place where nothing can harm them.

You'll either love or hate this movie, I don't think you can feel indifferent about it. It's taken me a day to fall in love. By the way, the soundtrack is absolutely stunning.

I Spit on Your Grave (Day of the Woman)
Whatever this movie is, it has to be one of the best revenge movies ever made. If you can make it through the highly uncomfortable middle act, the finale is very satisfying. I Spit On Your Grave.

9 Souls (2003,  Unrated)
9 Souls
9 inmates break out of jail together and travel across the country in a battered old van in search of a secret which they they were told about by a 10th prisoner. It is essentially a road movie. A road movie which encompasses tragedy, humour, fantasy, sadness and breathtaking photography. It has violence, it has sex, it has some laugh-out-loud moments too. It is also charming, sweet and romantic.

After watching this movie I was in complete awe of the director. If you haven't seen this movie then you are missing out on an absolute classic.

Dave Gorman's Googlewhack Adventure (2004,  R)
Dave Gorman's Googlewhack Adventure
Dave Gorman is very well known to UK TV viewers after his excellent shows, 'Dave Gorman's Important Astrology Experiment' and 'Are You Dave Gorman?' The latter being undertaken following a bet with a friend. Dave was tasked with finding 54 people (1 for each card in a deck including jokers) with the same name as himself - and meeting them. A journey which took him all around the world.

'Googlewhack Adventure' is his true story of his next journey around the world, covering over 90,000 miles in the pursuit of new Googlewhacks. It is a multi-award winning stand-up show recorded in front of a live audience in Swansea, Wales, UK. It won the award for Best One Person Show at the 2004 HBO US Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, Colorado - an award he won in 2001 for Are You Dave Gorman? It also won the 2004 Nightlife Award for Most Unique Comedy Performance while being performed in New York.

One day, sitting at his computer, attempting to write his novel but void of his muse, Dave received an email announcing that he was a googlewhack. Unaware of the term 'Googlewhack' Dave proceeded to investigate. He learned that his website was actually a Googlewhack (Francophile Namesakes) , not himself. Mild curiosity manifested itself into an obsession and Dave decided that Googlewhack-ing was more fun than writing a novel and he challenged himself to find more Googlewhacks. He found two, he contacted the originators of the Googlewhacks, and using his financial advance from his publisher, Dave set off to meet them and his journey began.

With the aid of a projector for showing slides and bar charts, Dave Gorman's comedic story is unmissable from start to finish. Apparently to this day he still has the alcohol-induced Texan driving licence tattoo on his arm which he regrettably received one night during his mammoth journey. This is one of the funniest and most entertaining stories ever told.
