Nan bei Shao Lin (Shaolin Temple 3: Martial Arts of Shaolin) (North and South Shaolin) (Arahan)
by Gee StevenMartial Arts of Shoalin is the first and only collaboration between Jet Li and Lau Kar-Leung. There is some slightly unconventional weapon use as well. This is also one of the few times that Jet Li has used this particular combination of weapons on screen, and it turns out to be one of his best fight sequences. This is Yue Sing-Wai's best action performance, and he delivers it with his signature style. It's some of the best fighting Lau Kar-Leung ever choreographed. It is a combination of the best that Hong Kong and mainland China had to offer at the time.

Midnight Run
by Gee StevenHilarious odd-couple / road movie / cop movie / action comedy packaged together very well. This was made back when director Martin Brest made good movies, not notorious box office duds like Gigli. He only makes a movie once every couple of years so he shouldn't have disappointed everybody like that. Anyway, Midnight Run is upbeat, action-packed, and pretty funny, as the swaggering Robert De Niro and the very dry Charles Grodin display perfect odd-couple chemistry. Good supporting cast, too, and lively music score by Danny Elfman. This here is the kind of action comedy that is actually fun to watch, without getting lame or stupid or annoying.

The Jungle Book
by Gee StevenThe Jungle Book is one of Disney's most memorable animated movies. It's based on the Mowgli stories by Rudyard Kipling. The movie probably has the best songs of any Disney movie, it's full of wonderful animals such as Baloo and King Louie the ape and it has a great little character in Mowgli who was raised in the jungle. This is a great story throughout and the songs were just wonderful. There's plenty of creatures for fans of animals from snakes to elephants to a big bad tiger called Shere Khan, one of the best Disney villains ever.

Tremors
by Gee StevenGo figure, but this movie was not exactly successful at the box office. Kevin Bacon is good as the lead and Fred Ward is also very good. This movie is rather bloody considering it is a PG-13 movie. The town meets and we are introduced to more colorful characters like the survivalist couple, the stingy grocery owner, and the annoying kid who loves to play a prank or two. There is also a student there studying seismology or something and everyone turns to her for the answers. This movie has a lot of comedy and some great scenes and is an all around enjoyable movie.

Meitantei Conan: Tokei-jikake no matenrou, (Case Closed the Movie: The Time Bombed Skyscraper)
by Gee StevenThis movie is a great introduction to the entire series. It is the first of the Case Closed movies and it does a terrific job of offering a movie experience to fans of the TV program as well as standing up as a independent movie experience. The plot device essentially allows Case Closed to explore one of the central issues of being young, of being a teenager with much higher than average intelligence. This movie explores these dyanmics and surrounds them with unique mysteries involving esoteric motives and plots. Case Closed is a serious mystery drama that just happens to be a surpirsingly funny. The filmmakers stick very close to the TV program and anyone who enjoys the series will enjoy this feature, and vice versa.

Peter Pan
by Gee StevenBased on J.M. Barrie's immortal play and novel about the little boy who doesn't want to grow up, Peter Pan had been a project stewing in Disney's mind for years. The Disney version is light and breezy and moves at a clip. The London sequence which opens the picture is spectacular in both the backdrops and the animation itself. Later sections of the movie are equally enchanting, and the personage of the villainous Captain Hook is brought to great comic life by Disney animators and the marvelous vocal talent of Hans Conried. As with past Disney efforts, the song score is superb.

Meitantei Conan: 14 banme no target, (Case Closed: The Fourteenth Target)
by Gee StevenThe cleverest thing about this movie is also the most difficult to translate: a series of number tricks and wordplay based on the characters' Japanese names. Behind the wordplay and arithmetic, however, is another solid Conan case: plenty of suspense, a wondrously elaborate solution, and a flash-bang finale loaded with explosions. Although it makes a good action-suspense movie with a clever mystery setup, its strict adherence to the world of Conan Edogawa ends up being its own undoing.

Hellboy II: The Golden Army (Hellboy 2)
by Gee StevenHellboy II: The Golden Army is better than the first movie. Seth MacFarlane does a fine job voicing Johann Krauss. The design work is superior to the first movie and the humor is ratcheted up a notch. The fights are better and more thrilling and the monsters are way cool. Great use of costumes and CGI working together to make everything feel real. There is also a tad too much time spent with the many love stories, but they all play out well. And an awesome flashback that had me grinning from ear to ear.

Inuyasha - Guren no houraijima (Fire on the Mystic Island)
by Gee StevenThis movie is action-packed with a superb music score and wonderful animation. There's humor here and there, the usual jokes such as Kagome's famous "Sit!" commands and Miroku's usual lechery. Plus we have six new half-demons who are introduced, each with their own unique personalities that we can hate/love. All in all this was a good movie that's sure to please any Inuyasha fan, so be sure to watch it if you ever get the chance.

Inuyasha - Tenka hadou no ken (Swords of an Honorable Ruler)
by Gee StevenAlthough Tenka hadou no ken is the third Inuyasha feature movie, it's the first of them to actually have the scope of a full-length feature. The movie contains all the ingredients that make the series what it is: the semi-mythological setting and most of the regular cast of characters, whose interaction is as layered and satisfying as ever. Although the somewhat grim storyline mostly precludes humor once it gets going, there are a few comedic moments. Fans of the series should definitely not miss this installment.
