  Donegal's Rating My Rating
1
Dune (1984,  PG-13)
Dune
I love this version! I love the Fremen's eyes, I wish my eyes glowed electric blue! I thought version was more true to the books and the characters were more like they ought to be.
2
Baraka (1993,  Unrated)
Baraka
I love movies like this, where it's just the film and the sounds and the music. I love it when there isn't just a story, but a million little untold stories.
3
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968,  G)
2001: A Space Odyssey
The audio is intense and amazing, and the visuals are stunning. A very thought-inspiring yet disquieting triumph of film.
4
Dreams (Akira Kurosawa's Dreams) (Yume) (1990,  PG)
Dreams (Akira Kurosawa's Dreams) (Yume)
This is my favorite movie of all time.

I love the setup of the film with several small stories. Everything has that unreal yet vivid feeling of a dream.

Not only do these stories represent dreams, but some of them show some things that might happen or have happened in such a way as the mind might create them in a dream.
5
Speed Racer (2008,  PG)
Speed Racer
Cheesy, but I think we all expected that. Still, it had a fun story and visually, it's simply stunning. The digitized world just blew my mind. So many colors, so much movement! All in all, a delightfully dorky movie that's awesome to watch. Definitely worth owning, too, I would say. It's next on my list.
6
Run Lola Run (Lola rennt) (1999,  R)
7
MirrorMask (2005,  PG)
MirrorMask
AWESOME!! I love the sphinxi, and Valentine is cool too.
8
Watchmen (2009,  R)
Watchmen
Let me get my complaints out of the way first: Rorschach's voice wasn't at all what I imagined (but it still worked) and he had a bit too much emotion; Silk Spectre II's costume: umm, "SILK" Spectre, not Latex Spectre, ok? it's like they think women never watch these movies or something; Nite Owl II's snow suit was not undignified enough (if you've read the comic, you know what I mean); they capitalized on the sex scenes too much for my taste or enjoyment; Dr. Manhattan's voice was also way off from what I'd imagined (but it still worked); and my BIGGEST COMPLAINT: that weak-ass "evil plot" they came up with to replace what Ozymandias really does in the comics. LAME! The comic's ending is so great, why would you kick it under the rug for that relatively boring ending?

So, up until the point where they explain Veidt's plan, I really liked the movie. Dammit, Snyder! You killed it right at the end!

My compliments to the movie: loved the casting for The Comedian, Rorschach, Nite Owl II, and Dr. Manhattan; OH GOD I LOVED THE SOUNDTRACK (did they put Prophecies from Koyaanisqatsi on there just for me?); loved the level of violence; liked most of the costuming (ahemnotsilkspectrethatsbullshit); they kept with the story very well (until that fucking ending, GOD!! DX); did I already say that the guy playing Rorschach was awesome? yeah, he was; Dr. Manhattan's monologue was pretty damn sweet.

So I really love the movie (UNTIL THE END GODDAMIT), and I hear that they're planning to integrate The Tales of the Black Freighter animation with the movie, which I hope will happen and I imagine would be sweet. So yeah, good movie good acters good action...SHIT ending.

Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001,  R)
Hedwig and the Angry Inch
Really tragic story. The movie itself was great, but I LOVE the soundtrack. I get mad at the character Hedwig a LOT throughout the movie, but I feel sympathy for the shitty life she had. Plus she knows how to ROCK.
10
Harold and Maude (1971,  PG)
11
Death Note (Desu nôto) (2006,  Unrated)
Death Note (Desu nôto)
Sweet.

Bam Bam and Celeste (2007,  Unrated)
Bam Bam and Celeste
Loved it! I laughed so much! Of course I loved Cho and Daniels (especially Cho, she's one of my idols), but I was NOT expecting Alan Cumming and that just made my day. He's probably the one who made me laugh most.
13
Koyaanisqatsi - Life Out of Balance (1983,  Unrated)
Koyaanisqatsi - Life Out of Balance
Another top 5 for me. Beautiful footage and amazing musical score. It tells a story better than anything with dialogue.
14
Battle Royale (Batoru Rowaiaru) (2001,  Unrated)
Battle Royale (Batoru Rowaiaru)
Best action film EVER! The book is awesome, the manga is awesome, the sequel is awesome, and I hear there's even an anime.
15
Final Fantasy VII - Advent Children (2006,  PG-13)
Final Fantasy VII - Advent Children
I really love this movie. The animation is absolutely gorgeous, the music is beautiful and some of the best I've heard, and the story is really quite moving. I really love the characters, "good" and "bad," and such interesting characters within such a great story makes an excellent film.

Beauty and the Beast (1991,  G)

23
Hotaru no haka (Grave of the Fireflies) (1988,  Unrated)
Hotaru no haka (Grave of the Fireflies)
A VERY sad anime, the story of a brother and sister whose family is killed in WWII. It is the story of their struggle for survival and their eventual demise.
24
The Lord of the Rings - The Two Towers (2002,  PG-13)
25
Silent Hill (2006,  R)
Silent Hill
I freaking love this movie. The monstrous deformations created by the demon and the girl are just amazing! Especially Pyramid Head, you gotta love him. Apparenty it's not very true to the game, but I've never played the game, so I am conviniently able to enjoy the movie without being annoyed by such things.
26
AVP - Alien Vs. Predator (2004,  PG-13)
AVP - Alien Vs. Predator

Everything is Illuminated (2005,  PG-13)
Everything is Illuminated
I really loved this movie. Since I watched it, I've been thinking about the presented ideas a lot and I've found them very interesting. Besides that, this movie has great acting, great cinematography and editing, and it has some wonderful comedic moments.

Tonari no Totoro (My Neighbor Totoro)
One of my favorite movies when I was little! I still love it.
33
North & South (,  Unrated)
North & South
Not to be repetitive, but this miniseries really is quite comparable with Pride & Prejudice (with Colin Firth). They share some qualities, but this one is distinct enough that it doesn't feel too similar to be enjoyable. I really loved it, it was great fun to watch. I'm really a sucker for these period films! XD
34
Night of the Living Dead (1968,  Unrated)
Night of the Living Dead
Best zombie movie, EVER. "They're coming to get you, Barbara!"

39
Hellboy II: The Golden Army (Hellboy 2) (2008,  PG-13)
Hellboy II: The Golden Army (Hellboy 2)
Although I liked the first one, this one was a hell of a lot better. I think it had better graphics, for one. Also, there were a lot more interesting creatures and beasts, which is always fun. Plus, come one, Seth Macfarlane as Krauss is just awesome (not to mention the character himself is quite interesting and amusing). Voice of Krauss = voice of Klaus on American Dad :P
40
Kôkaku kidôtai (Ghost in the Shell) (Shell Mobile Force) (1996,  R)
41
The Bucket List (2007,  PG-13)

I WANNA BE LIKE TANK GIRL!
47
Naqoyqatsi (Naqoyqatsi: Life as War) (2002,  PG)
Naqoyqatsi (Naqoyqatsi: Life as War)
This movie is a stunning mixture of brilliant video footage and musical score. Though not the best of the trilogy, still a very fine film.
48
Snakes on a Plane (2006,  R)
Snakes on a Plane
I am sick of these MOTHERFUCKING snakes on this MOTHERFUCKING plane!
49
Margaret Cho: Revolution (2004,  Unrated)
50
The Mist (2007,  R)
The Mist
Wow, I really loved this. King's horror stories have something that most horror movies don't, and this is a very good example of that. Instead of completely focusing on the gore and horror, the film also shows a lot about how people will manipulate the fear of others and use religion to justify horrible things.
51
Millennium Actress (Sennen joyû) (2001,  PG)
52
A Clockwork Orange (1971,  R)
53
Elizabeth (1998,  R)
Elizabeth
Cate Blanchett is such a wonderful actress!

The movie was very interesting and informative (though I shall have to do some reading to verify the information). It showed the barbaric brutality with which catholicism murdered anyone who didn't follow the catholic religion, for one thing. It shows how religion was basically the ruling factor in the government of the time, and how it almost kept Elizabeth from becoming queen.
54
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004,  R)
55
Tremors (1990,  R)
56
Moon Child (2004,  Unrated)
57
Land of the Blind (2006,  R)
Land of the Blind
Excellent film, an interesting and dark (yet at some points still humorous) story of the corruptibility of humanity and evils of power. Can the world ever change?
58
The Hours (2002,  PG-13)
The Hours
It would be hard to say exactly why, but I really loved this movie.
59
The Dark Knight (2008,  PG-13)
The Dark Knight
What an absolutely amazing film. I haven't been blown away by a movie in theatres for a long time. Ledger's performance was way beyond what I'd expected, which is a feat in and of itself since I had pretty high expectations. Ledger's Joker was a simply fascinating character, full of quirks and insanities which grip your imagination and keep you wondering what he will do next. He totally stole the show. Besides Ledger, though, there were plenty of other great characters, particularly Bale's Batman & Eckhart's Harvey 'Two-Face,' and I quite liked Oldman's Gordon character as well. (I have to say, though, that although it was nice to see a woman character who didn't have the cliche, typical Hollywood girl look, I didn't care for Gyllenhaal's character; good acting, but the character herself didn't draw much attention from me :/) All in all, stunning, amazing, fabulous movie and a real INSTANT FAVORITE! /end nerd rave
60
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005,  PG-13)
61
Big Fish (2003,  PG-13)
Big Fish
I love this movie! It's so fantastical, how can you not like it?
62
Amelie (Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain) (2001,  R)
63
Hauru no ugoku shiro (Howl's Moving Castle) (2005,  PG)
Hauru no ugoku shiro (Howl's Moving Castle)
Although quite different from the book as far as the story, the characters are portrayed very well and the movie is as fun as the book, though perhaps in different ways.
