Up in the Air
by MarkQuietly affecting story about a middle aged confirmed bachelor who makes a living by flying around the country firing people. Romantic comedy takes its time to develop, but as it does, the humor gradually draws the viewer into its easy-going rhythm. Director and screenwriter Jason Reitman's follow up to Juno is a similarly quirky and talky examination of a life. What makes the film so impressive is the witty repartee, particularly between stars George Cooney and Vera Farmiga who plays a sexual liaison he meets while traveling. Together they exhibit a playful sexiness that is surprisingly poignant. Cast also features relative newcomer Anna Kendrick in a breakout performance as a fast-rising recently hired co-worker. Occasionally the dialogue can be a bit pedantic, but it's also that concern for detail that makes these characters so humorous and moving.

In the Electric Mist
by LYNNTommy Lee Jones, John Goodman, Peter Sarsgaard, Mary Steenburgen,
A detective in the deep South is led into a series of surreal encounters with a troop of Confederate soldiers.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Good movie. Tommy Lee Jones once again gives an amazing performance. Good suspense/thriller. Loved the Southern Louisiana bayou atmosphere. The music and all of it. John Goodman was good. Like him playing the bad guy. I also enjoyed them playing off of each other. This movie is based on the book The Electric Mist With Confederate Dead by James Lee Burke. Definitely wanna read it now after seeing the movie. Great watch.posted 22 days ago -
Law Abiding Citizen
by LYNNJamie Foxx, Gerard Butler, Bruce McGill
An everyday guy decides to take justice into his own hands after a plea bargain sets his family's killers free. His target: The district attorney who orchestrated the deal.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This movie is my favorite movie from all the one's Gerard Butler has came out with this year. Sad story with a lot of action and twists and some surprises. Thought Gerard was great in this movie. It keeps you guessing on who's next or just what will happen next. Great movie, but the only part I didn't care for was the ending. Thought it could have been better. Or maybe I, personally was just wanting a different ending. But it is a good action thriller that is worth the watch.posted 23 days ago -

Blackboard Jungle
by ArianetaBlackboard Jungle is a 1955 social commentary film about teachers in an inner-city school. It is based on the novel of the same name by Evan Hunter.
The movie is hard hitting and probably a better representation of juvenile delinquency in the nineteen fifties than Rebel Without A Cause or The Wild One. The story revolves around an idealistic teacher on his first job in a tough urban all male high school.
Richard Dadier (Glenn Ford) is the teacher at North Manual High School, an inner-city school where many of the pupils, led by an African American student, Gregory Miller (Sidney Poitier), frequently engage in anti-social behaviour. Dadier makes various attempts to engage the students' interest in education, challenging both the school staff and the pupils. He is subjected to violence as well as duplicitous schemes; he first suspects Miller, but later realizes that Artie West (Vic Morrow) is the perpetrator, and challenges him in a showdown-type scenario in the classroom.
The film has also been credited with sparking the rock and roll revolution by featuring Bill Haley & His Comets' "Rock Around the Clock", over the film's opening credits, as well as in the first scene, in an instrumental version in the middle of the film, and at the close of the movie, establishing that song as an instant classic. Popularized by its use in the film, "Rock Around the Clock" reached number one on the Billboard charts, and remained there for eight weeks. The music also led to a huge teenage audience for the film, and their exuberant response to it sometimes overflowed into violence and vandalism at screenings. In this sense, the film has been seen as marking the start of a period of visible teenage rebellion in the late 20th century.
The film marked a watershed in the United Kingdom. When shown at a South London Cinema in 1956 the teenage teddy boy audience began to riot, tearing up seats and dancing in the aisles. After that riots took place around the country wherever the film was shown.
Blackboard Jungle was the first of what would become a popular genre: the film in which an idealistic teacher is confronted with a class of cynical teenagers, who have disengaged from conventional schooling. As so often in later films, issues of race and class lie at the heart of the dynamics. Subsequent films that exploited the theme include:
Blackboard Jungle was a shocking film for its time and several cities banned the movie which only served to contribute to its success. Some cities banned it because of its multi-racial content while others did it because of fear that it would spark violence. Even today it is a disturbing film.posted 23 days ago -

The Blind Side
by LYNNSandra Bullock, Tim McGraw, Quinton Aaron, Kathy Bates, Lily Collins, Jae Head
The Blind Side depicts the remarkable true story of Michael Oher, a homeless African-American youngster from a broken home, taken in by the Touhys, a well-to-do white family who help him fulfill his potential. At the same time, Oher?s presence in the Touhys? lives leads them to some insightful self-discoveries of their own. Living in his new environment, the teen faces a completely different set of challenges to overcome. As a football player and student, Oher works hard and, with the help of his coaches and adopted family, becomes an All-American offensive left tackle.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I am a sucker for a football movie and even more so when it is based on a true story. This movie is definitely one of my favorite movies of 09. Sandra Bullock, gives probably the best performance of her career yet. This has to be Tim McGraw's best performance as well. They genuinely felt like a real couple. This movie even had it's funny moments that seemed natural and not forced. Loved the relationship between Michael and S.J. so cute. This movie shows you that there are still good people in this world who do great things for other people. The events that Michael went through could have so easily steered him another way, and its always refreshing when there is a true happy ending in a movie about true events. An inspiring movie. Sandra Bullock is one of my favorite actor's and I think she is extremely talented and this movie proves that fact. Kathy Bates was very funny in this movie. She was awesome. Just thought the whole movie had great chemistry, and I will definitely be seeing it again.posted 24 days ago -
The King and I
by MarkSimply put, a perfect adaptation of the Rodgers and Hammerstein Broadway musical about Anna and the King of Siam. The sets are stunning, the costumes are superb, Deborah Kerr is glorious and Yul Brynner is iconic. What can you say about a film that presents the transcendent ballet, "Small House of Uncle Thomas" within the story, and actually tops itself. The entire film was shot in an extreme widescreen CinemaScope format. The actors practically leap off the screen in one memorable dance sequence. Bold, colorful, breathtaking and unforgettable. A cinematic achievement that deserves to take it's place among the greatest musicals ever produced.
Away We Go
by LYNNAWAY WE GO is a tender, sweet, and surprisingly funny addition to the genre. Verona De Tessant (Maya Rudolph, SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE) is six months pregnant, but she and her boyfriend, Burt Farlander (John Krasinski, THE OFFICE), are not tied down to their current house in Colorado. A sense of adventure and the desire to find a place to call home propels the couple across North America, stopping in Arizona, Wisconsin, Montreal, and Miami, where they learn the how-to's (and how-not-to's) of parenting from friends and family.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I really liked this movie. Different take on a "road trip" movie. Liked all the different character's you meet along the way. Thought Maya Rudolph was great in this movie along with John Krasnski. Never seen Maya do anything other then SNL, so it was great to see her in a different setting. Just really has to deal with learning on what kind of parents they want to be and the do's and dont's that they learn from their friends and family along the way on their trip. Some of the stories along the way will make you laugh and others will make you cry. Very good film. Liked the humor and enjoyed the music this film had. Good watch.posted 26 days ago -

by LYNNVera Farmiga, Peter Sarsgaard, Isabelle Fuhrman

Struggling to regain some semblance of normalcy in their lives, the couple decides to adopt another child. At the local orphanage, both John and Kate find themselves strangely drawn to a young girl named Esther. Almost as soon as they welcome Esther into their home, however, an alarming series of events begins to unfold, leading Kate to believe that there?s something wrong with Esther?this seemingly angelic little girl is not what she appears to be.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Really didn't know if I wanted to see this movie and have had it for awhile. But my sister told me if I was to watch it I wouldn't be disappointed as she had already seen it and loved it. So I watched it and to my surprise it wasn't bad at all. I thought all the hype it was getting was a little over the top, and those movies always end up being a flop. But it was good, wouldn't call it horror flick. A thriller yes, but not horror. The young actress playing Esther was really good. Very believable. The back ground story of Esther was really interesting and I liked that it actually showed the young girl doing the horrific things, then just having the camera turning away like they do in most films with kids. Good evil kid flick that won't disappoint. The only down point in this movie for me is the length. It's a little over the 2hr mark, and it was just a bit long for me.posted 26 days ago -
Home Room
by LYNNErika Christensen, Busy Philipps, James Pickens Jr., Victor Garber, Ken Jenkins
A small town is rocked by a shooting at its high school that results in nine deaths and serious injury to one popular female student, Deanna (Erika Christensen). As a detective (Victor Garber) looks for those responsible, his concentration turns to a defiant outcast named Alicia (Busy Phillips). With her involvement still in question, Alicia visits Deanna in the hospital, and the two forge a rare bond over what they saw that fateful day.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Very raw movie about two young girls picking up the pieces after the killings at their high school. I thought it was a powerful movie with great performances by Erika Christensen and Busy Philipps. Never does the movie ever lighten up. Which I don't think a movie about a high school shooting should. It shows the aftermath of how those who remain alive are forever traumatized by this horrendous act. Alicia's issues run deeper then just the school shootings, and by the end of the film it touches on them. The movie runs long, a little over the 2hr mark, but the performances by the two main characters where good enough that I didn't mind. It's basically about these two girls who come from very different lives finding comfort in each other in coping with what life's troubles have left them with.posted 27 days ago -

Spoorloos (The Vanishing)
by ArianetaThe Vanishing (Dutch: Spoorloos) is a French/Netherlands film adaptation of the novella The Golden Egg by Tim Krabbé, Directed by George Sluizer, the film is about a young Dutch woman named Saskia Wagter (Johanna ter Steege) who disappears from a rest stop along a highway in rural France; her lover, Rex Hofmann (Gene Bervoets), cannot accept her disappearance and embarks on an obsessive search for her spanning years.
George Sluizer directed this brilliant, unforgettable Dutch/French suspense film in which a young man goes through hell after his girlfriend suddenly disappears during a vacation. Director here breaks all the rules of the thriller by following the bad guy and showing the method to his madness in great detail. As I said film is adapted from Tim Krabbé's novel The Golden Egg, this is a beautifully understated study of obsession that investigates the edges of rationality and the destructive capacity of idealistic devotion. At the heart of its icy spell is Donnadieu's utterly plausible evocation of everyday madness, a resolutely banal picture of evil. Sluizer's direction is seamless throughout, effortlessly juggling domesticity and damnation.
Central to the conceit of the film and original novel is the intriguing premise of just how far anyone would be prepared to go to find out the truth - and the terrible price that must sometimes be paid for doing so. Bervoet's performance details very well the frustration, despair and obsession of wanting to know the answer, but it is Donnadieu's utterly impassive, amoral Lemorne that truly chills the blood. Ter Steege won the first EFA Best Supporting Actress Award for her turn as the charming, whimsical Saskia - a delightful characterization that makes the revelation, when it comes, of what happened to her all the more harrowing.
An unforgettably chilling psychodrama which twists the slenderest of plots into a hellish exploration of human potential. Here the mystery is not whodunit, but how it happened and what happens next.posted 28 days ago -

The Girl on the Bridge (La Fille sur le pont)
by ArianetaThe Girl on the Bridge, directed by Patrice Leconte, is a amusing, touching moving, visually stunning meditative work on solitude, fortune, and salvation. The film blazes a trail through Paris, Italy, Monaco, and Istanbul, adding contortionists, other circus performers on the way and a little bit taste of Greece.
Vanessa Paradis (simple perfect) and Daniel Auteuil (what a great performance) star in this film which is greater example of European cinema. It is a French black and white road movie with adventure through Europe. Paradis plays Adele, a lost soul for whom brief affairs (and when we say brief meaning a few minutes to a few days) that serve only to lead her on to the next guy who will, hopefully, offer something more than his penis. She is an unlucky, visceral girl who does not beg for pity. Seeking an end to her misfortune, she decides one night in Paris to jump into the Seine. Along comes Gabor (Daniel Auteuil), who stops and offers her a proposition: since she has nothing to lose at this point, why not join him. He is a knife-thrower and she is to be his target. He tells her luck is his especially in a try to save her but she jumps anyway, and he goes in after her. Their relationship has just begun. This is not a sexual relationship?though the intensity and trust involved during the knife throwing create a fiery atmosphere. Their seduction of each other is not sexual, though it is physical even if they don't touch, and above all heartfelt. Neither Adele nor Gabor is seeking sexual pleasure, though Adele's persistent liaisons are almost funny in their lack of passion. The knife throwing scenes are most intense. The public has tired of mere knife throwing, so Gabor must up the ante. Adele is covered with a white sheet-he aims for her silhouette. Adele is placed on a spinning wheel-again his aim is perfect. The trust shared between them is immeasurable and makes most modern day love stories about as compelling ?as telephone commercials?. The scene where Gabor's eyes are blazed out in a line of white light is rendered well, but shots more subtle in their gradation suffer in the translation. Camera loves Vanessa. It is clear that is one of the most beautiful a woman can look in the movies and I think that she's the idealized waif of every lonely boy's fantasy.....The Girl On the Bridge follows some standards guidelines of romantic comedy with some interesting variations and rhythms. There are those who will immediately assume that because the film is French, it must contain deep philosophical musings, but that's not really the case. Yes! The film tickles the underbelly of things like fate and chance, but he never does much with these weighty issues. This is not a deep exploration of the existential aspect of humanity's nature. Instead, it's a quirky love story that appeals more to the emotions than to the intellect. It is an exploration of love, luck, telepathy, and is a charm film from start to finish.posted 28 days ago -

Boot Camp
by LYNNMila Kunis, Gregory Smith, Peter Stormare, Christopher Jacot
A group of troubled teens are sent to a rehabilitation program housed in a remote camp on the island of Fiji. What their parents believe is a state-of-the-art deluxe institution in a beautiful natural environment turns out to be a prison-like boot camp where they are abused and brainwashed.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I really wasn't expecting much from this movie, thought it was going to be a waste of my time. But it was actually good. Mila Kunis is the lead in this movie along with Gregory Smith, and I thought they were good together. It's said to be based on true events that happened in boot camps of the 70's told in today's time. The whole movie was a surprise, and was something I have never seen before. The abuse that goes on in this movie is alarming considering it is based on true happenings. It's definitely frightening to think that some of these camps still exist. Parents sending away there children because they are out of control without having any contact with them the entire time just blows my mind. What kind of parent is that?
There's also a bit of a love story in the mix of all this, and in a sick way it's kind of sweet what Sophie's boyfriend Ben does for her. It's a good movie with good acting. I don't think anyone would have this on their list of movie's to see, but I think it should be. Great watch.posted 28 days ago
