Proof that us Brits can make a better film than "Halloween" and do it many years before! Well, alright so it's not really better but it is certainly more believable! There's no way that John Carpenter didn't have knowledge of this either. Susan George looks amazing in it and acts her heart out... almost literally! She goes from just scared to full blown hysteria in about an hour! And then things start getting really sadistic... It's also interesting to see George Cole and Dennis Waterman in a film together ages before they were partnered as Arthur and Terry in ITV's "Minder". Don't expect any humour here though. I think the PG rating severely underestimates the scare factor of this movie. You'll be on the edge of your seat with suspense nearly all the way through. The housebound action is all very claustophobic and atmospheric with a really good Amicus quality too even though it isn't actually by them. The director, Peter Collinson, also made "The Italian Job". If you can find it anywhere this really is the perfect thing for Hallowe'en. |

If I had watched this in the cinema, I would have walked out within 10 minutes nursing a migraine and vowing never to watch another movie by Stephen Hopkins again. As it was, I watched it at home and so had nowhere else to go. I tried hard to fall asleep to escape the shaky handheld camera which refused to stay still for a moment but, alas, I failed and ended up watching the whole disgraceful, motion-sickness inducing, mess. It was an hour and 10 minutes in before things picked up from being dull as ditchwater to mildly entertaining and then everything just started rushing by with all sorts of cliché-ridden twists. The scene with the CGI locusts was quite exciting but the ending just made me angry. This turned out to be just another "Wicker Man" and "The Omen" ripoff with more than a few similarities to "Signs" as well. I wanted to like it, I really did, but it was honestly one of the worst things I've seen this year. It wasn't horror. There was nothing scary, no gore, and no real sexiness. I am not a fan of David Morrissey, the poor man's Liam Neeson, at all. Who the hell is Hilary Swank anyway? I've never seen her in anything else and I don't think I ever want to see her again either. This movie sucked. |

| Suspiria - R |
Boring '70s crapfest with hardly any plot, poor acting, terrible dialogue and a monotonous soundtrack. If you watch a dubbed version, it is even more ridiculous and cheesy. I have no idea why people like this film other than having some weird need to be pretentious about pseudo-arty nonsense made in Italy. Dario Argento is simply one of the worst directors ever and every "giallo" he made was a meaningless mess. This is slightly more watchable than "Tenebrae" or "Inferno" but not by much. Apart from a few pretty girls and some innovative gore scenes for the time, there really is nothing outstanding about "Suspiria" at all. In fact, it will seem very slow and tedious to most people and, of course, isn't scary in any way. There are attempts at suspense but there is never any real payoff to any of them. Things just run out of steam or end up looking badly edited. The best description of this movie is the often used phrase, "sty le over substance". I've yet to find any real horror fan who still likes this even though it was hyped beyond belief in the early days by people who simply didn't know any better. It's something you'll probably watch once just out of curiousity and then wish you had your life back. |
