| Avatar - PG-13 |
After hearing all the hype I was nervous about finally seeing Avatar - the foremost question in my mind being: "Will the effects be that good?" The answer to which is yes, the effects are spectacular and utterly gorgeous. Visually the film was spectacular. Avatar is beautiful, aesthetically speaking. It is also offensively patronising and bears typically lacking dialogue. James Cameron tactlessly and ineloquently tackles a sensitive issue with all the maturity of an idealistic 15 yr old in this film. I imagine Anthropologists are groaning and shaking their heads should they be brave enough to see it. The way in which the over-pumped score and cheesy dialogue is used to drag emotion out of the audience is utterly revolting. The "borrowed" sections of the plot are stitched together with entire scenes from other films and books played out with these pretty new effects. In one portion of the film you could be excused for thinking that you had suddenly been duped into watching Braveheart. See Avatar for the special effects but be very wary of it's bullshit. 4 1/2 stars for aesthetics alone, but minus 2 stars for all that it is lacking. |

| Pandorum - R | If you liked Aliens/Event Horizon/Sunshine/Serenity/Farscape then you will probably enjoy this film. Great cast, acting and a good quality film overall. Only down side - not a lot of (or any that I could spot) originality in plot. | Astro Boy (AstroBoy) - PG | Finally a remake of a beloved childhood show that doesn't make me want to stab myself. Animation is childlike (and not as good as one would expect) and the voices are, at times ill-fitting with the characters. Otherwise, the storyline is good, the characters are fairly true to form and it makes a lovely reboot of the characters. | Where the Wild Things Are - PG | It was interesting but possibly a little too clever for it's own good. Every film, intentionally or otherwise, has a target market and unfortunately this one has a fairly obscure one. | The Twilight Saga: New Moon - PG-13 | Not as bad as critics are claiming. There's some fun action sequences and though the CGI is on a shoestring budget it's not too shabby. The story was (wisely) seriously condensed from the book but is still longer than you'd expect.
