Dune 1. Dune PG-13 5.0 Stars
Based on the best Science Fiction novel of all time of the same name. It does well in rendering a story closer to the heart of the book than most adaptions. The result is a direction that lends depth and delivers a very strong performance.
Heat 2. Heat R 5.0 Stars
I rate this movie the best of the best of action gangster movies. Perfectly cast characters, top acting, and it takes the genre to a higher level. This is definitely my most favourite role that De Niro has played, he has a very strong believable presence in his character. The fact that I was living in L.A. at the time this was shot and released, it had a very distinct reality to it, and I have been in many of the places where the film was shot.. making it really come ALIVE!! (Beware the green tow-truck...)
The Outlaw Josey Wales 3. The Outlaw Josey Wales PG 5.0 Stars
Spectacular period action/drama western!! At the end of the Civil War, not all the southern boys feel like bending over and taking it up the rear end by their conquerors... and Josey Wales is out for a reckoning - justice to avenge his family lost by the violence. A classic role and one of Clint's best films.
Tombstone 4. Tombstone R 5.0 Stars
My all-time favourite western. An immaculate script with some of the most memorable one-liners. There is an excellent cast, with very methodically acted roles played to the full. Overall a very colourful and involving period piece, lending a accurate feel for life in the Arizona silver-rush.
American Psycho 5. American Psycho R 5.0 Stars
How dark must my sense of humour be to laugh at this movie? Chilling, yet with clever verbal wit (particularly in the narrative) Set in the 80's, it includes a very good snapshot of the music of the era, a running commentary of which is twisted into this psychotic tale.
The Postman 6. The Postman R 5.0 Stars
More post-apocalyptic excellence by Kostner! Full storyline, for which they could have easily added a lot more... in fact, this could have been done as two movies to really fill it out... But its very enjoyable as is..!

    Oh, yeah...
    And yet another one...
Most people say it's a bad movie, but I do not agree with 'em.
I thought it was gripping all the way through. Uterly emotional, nerve breaking stuff. I'm pretty sure I would have left the theater room without any nails (either fingers' or toes') if only I had the habit of biting them.
And let's cut the crap. Cruise does deliver a rather good performance on this one. Him and everyone else on the cast. Especially Fanning. The best of them all for sure.
I'm not gonna say it's a terribly brilliant movie, but I honestly don't think it deserves all the bashing against it either. The way people were criticizing this film back when it was released, I was expecting it to be just another stupid, dull Hollywood production. And, well... It really wasn't that way at all.
Still, I guess the ending could have been a lot more incisive than it actually was. I mean, I liked the ending. I just didn't like the way it came out. Too little impact considering all the tension throughout most of the film.
But, in this case, the ending itself doesn't make it a bad movie. Only a not so great one.
Something I was able to cope with rather well, since the rest of the film was good enough to pay off for the time I've spent watching it.
    Well... I don't know.

Most people say it's shitty, so maybe you should think carefully before you decide to give it a chance.

    Pretty watchable movie.
And quite easy to review also.

    Wanna bet?

    - Sudden zombie boom;
    - film students catching zombies on camera;
    - zombies roaming around all over the place;
    - film students running away from zombies while catching them on camera;
    - normal people turning into zombies;
    - film students witnessing normal people turn into zombies while catching them on camera;
    - ...

... And so on and so forth.

It's not a great film, as you may suspect already, but it isn't all that bad either.
The amateur camera work adds a nice touch to it. Makes it feel a little different from other zombie movies and a bit more realistic.
As far as realism can go in this genre, that is.
But, yeah, the directing style helped the rating a great deal. And considering that I only gave it 3 stars... You can imagine how it isn't such a must-see movie.
Watch it only if you have a tendency for enjoying movies with an amateur filming style.

If you don't, then there's a pretty good chance you'll hate it.

And if, on top of that, you don't usually tend to care for regular zombie movies all that much either... Then there's a pretty good chance you'll end up slitting your wrists halfway through it.

Pretty interesting to follow the life story of an emerging sociopath such as Myers.
This is exactly what captivated me the most in this film: the chance to follow the evolution of one of the most mind-blowing psychopathologies in the history of mankind. (Well, at least in my book it is a very mind-blowing one.) Here we get the chance to take a peek at its implications while it is still in a sort of incubation stage. While the child is still discovering his abnormal anti-social tendencies as well as his compelling urge to slice open every breathing being.
And although I wouldn't have minded witnessing the whole thing right from the very start (right since the moment that little psycho brat was born), Myers' already a young man when the movie begins. Pitty! But the way this story is portrayed, I guess watching him in his earlier years wouldn't be much of a help when it comes to shed some light on his condition.
And it is in fact the whole story behind the main character that makes this movie worthwhile. Not the chills (which are very few), not the bloody scenes, not the suspense,... Nothing like that. It's really not all that scary to watch. But it is rather unsettling, though. At least until Myers grows up, that is. Then it's just like all the other horror movies portraying serial killers. Nothing new in that department.
Still, the first half makes up perfectly for the 'been there, done that' rest of the film.
Can you imagine what would be like to have a child like that?

Well, take a look and decide for yourself.

I say it would be a bitch to find enough room for all the pets in the backyard.
And I don't mean above the ground.

Meh... Too sweet for my taste.
But I'm not gonna say it's a bad movie. I'm sure you'll love it, if by any chance you're into this sort of films.
And Carell is quite funny as this 'How the hell am I supposed to deal with these teenage girls who happen to be my daughters' kind of father. I personally liked him better on the Daily Show, but I must admit he doesn't do bad here either.
This was a first for me, you know? I mean, watching him perform in a movie. And I was quite pleased to find his talent for comedy is still in shape.
But as it turns out, it wasn't enough to win me over. The romance factor is too much of a presence and spoils just about any laughs Carell's silliness may provide.
And besides, Binoche's being part of the cast didn't help all that much either. I don't know why, but that woman really gets on my nerves sometimes. I think maybe it's because of her annoying naive look and persistent silly-cute smile. A real pãozinho sem sal as they say in my country.
Roughly translating it, a real tiny bread without salt.

    What?

    Wanted Wanted

    Crazy, crazy action flick!
Quite different from all the rest, I can tell you.
First of all, and unlike most action movies out there, it's not supposed to portray reality while at the same time using some ridiculous, annoying far-fetched scenes as a way of dealing with the infamous plot holes. This happens all the time in this genre. You know like, for instance, when a plot is flowing in a somewhat tidy fashion and then out of the blue comes a car flying over a burning bridge, only to fall on the road later again and keep on moving as if it never happened.
No, Wanted's not like that at all. It was never meant to portray reality as we know it. It's way too insane for that.
Let's just say they put the far in the far-fetched and manage to go beyond it. And what usually looks ridiculous in other movies becomes acceptable and even enjoyable in this one. Because they're not breaking any reality-bound rules. And how could they? The whole movie makes us feel that there are absolutely no rules to be broken. It's like they've created a whole new reality where anything goes. A quite clever move in my opinion, as it completely obliterates the far-fetchedness problem. Truth is, you can't have a far-fetched scene in a movie where all the scenes are meant to look unreal.
And that's really the beauty of Wanted.
That and also the dark humour in it. Sharp and unconventional, just the way I like it.
Also, the directing is just amazing. Definitely not ordinary in any sense of the word. Sometimes it's sheer madness, with very specific scenes rushing after each other to provide you with a sense of being in the characters' shoes and seeing things from their perpective, not only in terms of what they're capturing with their eyes, but also in terms of how those images and situations affect their state of mind.
Yeah, some shots are really that good.
But I guess I won't be mentioning any more about the directing. Better watch for yourself. As it turns out, reviews are no match for the real deal. Which in this case is well worthy of your time and attention.

    Although...
And you know what they say...
All good comes to an end, right?...
    Right.

(Except for Fight Club, that is. And very few other movies... But that's really not the point here.)

Well, despite all the good things I've been mentioning until now... I gotta be honest. The movie theme is not all that exciting or even original. And it's my belief they didn't make all that much effort while working on the plot either. Which means the storyline could have been a lot more breathtaking and also a whole lot more awe-inducing.
Very entertaining, but by no means brain candy.
Still, it beats the crap out of most movies lacking a top-noch plot. And considering the amount of films which fit in that category, I'd say Wanted is a pretty goddamn good movie in the overall.
    And that's that.
It's a bit hard to explain the way this movie works.
Better watch the thing and find out for yourself.

After a bit of a slow start, this film really comes to life about half way through, the animation of course was great, Jack Black's voice completely matched the main character and the ideas and choreography that went into this film was quite something.

This feature length cartoon really has captured something from the Martial Arts movies and with clever little morals for the young ones to catch on to. Kung Fu Panda was a really enjoyable film.

Some really impressive effects in this film throughout. Well done to James McAvoy for landing this role, of which he played the main character well. The storyline was more impressive than some other graphic novels, despite a lot of it being pretty predictable.

Angelina jolie didn't really put any kind of stamp on it, other than pretty action chick.

Overall a very enjoyable action flick and again, impreesive effects, not sure how much of that came across better as it was on the big screen.

I don't quite know what to think of this movie. And I still don't know whether it was supposed to be a comedy or a serious film. I mean, the first half is full of humorous scenes and funny lines, but then they somehow turn the story around and start to get a bit on the weird romantic side (and I don't mean weird in a good way). And the explanation for the main character's condition would be fine by me if only they hadn't embellished it so much.
As the movie was developing I was going like: 'HA HA HA HA HA... That was funny!... HA HA HA.. Funny as hell!... HA HA... HA... ah... Hu?!... Really?!... Ooohh, right... So that's why he... But what about... Oh, man! WTF?!... Is it just me or are they turning the plot into a cheesy romantic one?... Wait, wait... There's still hope... Ehr... Nope. There it is. They really are doing it... Thank you so much for the mainstream outcome, you guys. I really appreciate it.'
Basically, this movie was pretty entertaining until they started with the metaphysical, romantic mumbo jumbo.
But that was about it. I don't think it's a great film whether with or without the romantic BS.
A whole lot funny, though. Especially the first half or so.
Only fun the fun of it. It's not a great film.

    No way.
    How can it be?
I mean... Kutcher and Diaz in the leading roles... A plot about two people getting married in Vegas while under the influence of alcohol...
    Not a masterpiece?!... Really?
    Who would have thought?

    Well...
As it turns out, there are certain movies I'm willing to give a chance to, even though I'm well aware they won't be all that great. And all for the sake of a few good laughs. So maybe you shouldn't take my word for granted when it comes to comedy movies. Not unless you enjoy them the way I do. Which means to say separating them from all the other movies when it comes to decide whether they're good or not, and having a completely distinct rating system. And that's why I've decided, right from the start, to make a separate movie list for this genre. Because the way I enjoy this sort of movies is somewhat different from the way I enjoy all the others. While watching a comedy film, I'm not really looking for plot accuracy. Nor am I hoping the direction will swept me off my feet. I'm really just looking for a bit of fun.
All this to say that the above rating (as well as all my other ratings to comedy movies) should be perceived as a comparison within the genre and nothing but. And 3 stars means something like 'fun, but not too funny'. It won't crack you up, that's for sure. But it'll still be able to pull a few sincere laughs out of you.

    Or not.

It will depend on how much you enjoy the genre.
Recommended only to those who enjoy the genre just for the sake of a few good laughs.

If you're only looking for masterpieces, don't bother watching it. Nor any other comedy movie, for that matter.

I guess I'm a little fed up with Indiana. It used to be a lot of fun when I was little, but now I just don't know...
The thrill isn't there anymore, it seems. At least for me it isn't. Maybe they should have left it alone instead of making yet another sequel.
I mean, don't get me wrong. It's not a terrible movie. It's still pretty decent to watch (if you don't count the far-fetched scenes, that is). And Indianas' sense of humour is still as sharp as ever. But I guess we could have done without all the forced romantic explanations sorrounding this character's life. The way I see it, he was supposed to remain in our memory as some sort of mysterious icon forever in pursuit of new adventures. And that's why I think they shouldn't have bothered making this film. The magic is forever gone. Now he's just an ordinary man for all I care.

    GODDAMN IT!!!
I want the old Indiana concept back.

Funny Games (2008) Funny Games (2008)
    4.0 Stars by Tania
This movie is (I'm glad to say) a true anti-Hollywood anthem in all its essence. Its main guiding question seems to be: 'What would Hollywood NOT do?'. Because almost every single thing in it breaks (or at least defies) the rules that usually guide major movie productions. And it felt as if though it was meant to be a declared war against the traditional blockbuster pattern.
No wonder the theater room was almost empty. This is by no means a movie for the masses. And if you like your motion pictures with extra Hollywood dressing, then I would advise you to stay away from Funny Games. I'm sure you won't find it to be all that funny after all.
I, on the other hand, felt quite refreshed after having watch it. It was like the first breath of fresh air after having been locked inside a closet reeking of mothballs and old socks. It was undoubtedly a very pleasant way of breaking the blockbuster routine and somehow taking a rest from all the commercial movies that linger in the international film sector. It's like an epidemic tendency, nowadays. Every movie seems to follow the same steps as the previews ones. And maybe it has been like this all the time. But that doesn't mean I have to enjoy it. I actually don't. And that's why I'm thankful for the fact that at least a few movies still manage to avoid the dominant, tiring commercial cycle.
The thing I most liked about Funny Games is that it has the ability to pull the strongest feelings out of the viewers. Well, at least in my case it worked like a real button pusher. Tension was the word of the day. From a particular moment on, few were the scenes that didn't make me anxious to at least a certain degree. The story is gripping, the plot is great and the supposedly funny games are just outrageous (in a very good way, I mean). Plus, the performances are as fantastic and realistic as can be. I was already expecting it to be that way when it comes to Watts and Roth, but... HELL! Even Pitt managed to fall on my good side. He couldn't have done a better job. And his character... Absolutely out of this world!

    'WHERE'S THE REMOTE?'

    Priceless!
I'm sure not everyone will enjoy this particular scene, but I, for one, tend to think it was a clever move.

And, finally, the only reason why the above rating isn't higher is because of a few anti-climactic scenes that somehow broke the pace of the movie. Those particular scenes should have been shorter, in my opinion, because at some point they started to get a bit boring.
And I don't know... Maybe it was supposed to be that way....
Let's just say it didn't work for me.
And who knows?... Maybe it'll work for you.
NOTE TO ALL THE HOLLYWOOD WORSHIPERS OUT THERE: Stay away - I repeat - STAY AWAY from this movie. Whatever you do, DO NOT watch it.

The rest of you can go right ahead.

Oh, right... Now I remember why I didn't think too highly of this movie when I first saw it... I'd forgotten how terribly frustrating it was.
There's really nothing to it, is there?... Yeah, ok, an angels falls madly in love with a mortal, and I must admit that's not the kind of thing we see happening everyday, but... Besides that, what have we got here?... Ehr... Not much,right?... I mean, they talk, and talk, and hang around the library, and talk, and talk, and go fruit shopping, and talk, and talk, and stare at each other, and talk a little more, and cry, and argue, and... finally comes an interesting scene to break the dullness, and then... What was it, really?... Oh, that's right... They kiss, and cuddle, and talk, and talk, and... Yep, a love story pretty much like all the rest, except that he's an angel instead of a human being. And that's really the only original thing about this movie. And also what saved it from an even lower rating.

I can't say this is a perfect spook movie, but I think it's still pretty good all the same. The plot is interesting enough to keep your attention throughout, and is also quite clever and original for its genre. The thing is, the atmosphere in it could have been a lot eerier than it was. Not only the heart racing scenes are almost non existent, but they're also a bit soft for my taste... Ok, cutting the crap, they're not heart racing at all in their majority. Which in turn makes this movie a lot less scarier than it actually could have been.
So, I guess what seems to make this film worthy of your time is really the story that is being told. That alone makes it all worthwhile. And the performances are quite good also. It is my belief the Spanish actors and actresses of the world are finally succeeding on not acting as if though movies were soap operas... Oh... If only the actors and actresses in my country were capable of that achievement... One can only hope.
Not all that spooky, but worth a shot.

Sex and the City: The Movie Sex and the City: The Movie
    3.5 Stars by Tania
Some say it's a bad thing when a movie based on a tv show has too much resemblance to the series itself. Well, I kinda think otherwise. If I enjoy a tv series, I expect the motion picture to be faithful to it. Only longer than an ordinary episode.
When it comes to Sex And The City: The Movie, it's obvious that all the key elements that constitute the series are there from the beginning till the end. The most important thing here, in my opinion, is that they had the decency to keep the same cast in the film. It would have been pretty shitty if they hadn't. At least for us followers of the series. And most of the time, the movie is in fact faithful to the tv show. It begins where the series ended and uses the characters' past events as a foundation for the plot, which in turn makes it work like a long episode designed to bring some closure to the story.
And I must say I really did enjoy it. Only not as much as I enjoy the series. And althoug the movie resembles the tv show a great deal, there's something about it that doesn't quite add up. I can't say for sure, but I have a feeling it's about the main characters. I guess there were times when they just didn't feel like the old Carrie and the gang. And the characters themselves are really what makes the Sex And The City such an enjoyable show.
But I did like it, nonetheless. The rating could have been a bit higher, but I can't say I regret having watch it.
Only if you follow the series. If you don't, there's a pretty good chance you won't enjoy it.

First of all, it is in fact a good film. I can't deny it, even though it doesn't fit in my fav movie genre. The performances are just superb and the script is quite good also. The thing here is, it's too slow paced for my taste. And, plus, the ending could have been a whole lot better. Unfortunately, this movie goes from gripping to exhausting. And I don't mean it psychologically. I mean exhausting like going round in circles and showing us pretty much the same thing scene after scene after scene.
Still, I don't think it deserves less than the above rating. Dullness aside, it has quality alright.
